Editorial Review

If you want to understand the 1990s, you have to understand venture capitalists. These are the people who listen to business pitches by the score, the financial-world equivalent of miners turning over tons of earth in search of precious metal. They're looking for the next Amazon.com, the next Yahoo!, the next eBay. Randall E. Stross, who teaches business history at San José State University, just happened to be there when a firm called Benchmark Capital discovered eBay. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for anyone in the startup world
As someone in the startup industry, hearing the VC point of view was very interesting. Add to that a refresher course on several of the important industry-shaping deals and an entertaining down-to-earth delivery style, and you got a certain winner on your hands.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hubris meets Homoeroticism
I give this book 4 stars for its inadvertently hysterical comedy.Everything you need to know to understand how the tech bubble formed and why it burst so dramatically is here--not in the story the author tells, but in the pseudo-macho, we-are-the-masters-of-the-universe, lets-measure-each-other's-penises subtext that runs throughout.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good read with some good lessons
I doubt "eBoys" was intended to read as a period piece, but it certainly does in the post-technology bubble world. There are a couple things that come across loud and clear: first, these venture capitalists were not blind to the bubble that was forming; second, if they wanted to stay alive and relevant in their field, they needed to keep financing new companies and unwillingly participate in furthering the bubble.

4-0 out of 5 stars the best of the bunch
I have a few books on ebay and this one is the easiest most user friendly book i have encountered. Love the cartoons and the bit of tongue-in-cheek fun along the way. It is well organized and actually fun to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Beginner Guide to E Bay by Miller
This is an excellent reference guide if you intend to sell or4-0 out of 5 stars Best thing I've found about succeeding on eBay . . .
I've been a small-time bookseller on eBay since shortly after it started up, and it took awhile to figure out just what I was doing. I wish this book had been available then! Actually, it's become more difficult -- not easier -- ... ... Miller does a good job of explaining the best way to approach things, dealing with the eBay Establishment, handling deadbeats and frauds (buyers *and* sellers), playing the feedback game, and trying to decide if you can actually make a living from this thing. (Probably not for most booksellers, not without a real-world location to work from.) The chapter of shipping tips is especially worth reading. Of the half-dozen recent books about eBay I've read recently, this is probably the best. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars So many mistakes
If you want a general introduction to J2EE, this book is ok, I suppose. Definitely not for Advanced users, as it claims. The high amount of authers shows through with inconsistant writing and often hard to understand sections. It also appears the authors didn't do much more then rewrite the Sun J2EE documentation - which is free to download.
1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking in detail to an extreme
I've gotten as far as chapter 7 and there is next to no usable information. In less than 40 pages it attempts to cover servlets, filters, and event listeners.I regret spending the money on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste
I read every page of this book. It was a complete waste of my time and money. I'm asking for a refund. There was no detail that helped me. While I'm not a new testament kind of guy, I expected more from a "Bible". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good, broad coverage
Overall I found this book to cover the key concepts of PKI and its practical use fairly well. The case studies help me relate to how things are actually being done.My issue with other books is that they are too theoretical. Also the book gives me a strong case for expanding my PKI deployment as I can cite other successes (worldwide).

4-0 out of 5 stars More to do with compliance than with PKI
The author seems to have "bought" into Public Key Infrastructure completely. Many chapters have a simliar formula: 5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
Good stuff on PKI: technical and business angles. Compliance was the main reason I took at look at this book, since HIPAA affects us day to day. I did appreciate the introduction to the technology (with technical depth). One thing I did really like it was that (to large degree) the book was vendor neutral. Some of the books through the RSA label have some spin. Definitely worth adding this book to the security collection. ... Read more

This book provides a good historical perspective of different techniques and strategies that have made firms (large and small) succeed using the Internet. All the chapters are pertinent... each provide Tips or Know-How that any Corporate Manager should learn.5-0 out of 5 stars Clear-Cut Guide
This is a unique book -for real business people trying to navigate ecommerce. By real business people I mean those who are not technical, nor want to be.It troubleshoots the organizational pitfalls and short-sighted, online seductions to help executives think about what running their business online really means. The authors outline interesting, actionable and sound tactics. If you've ever had the sneaking (and perhaps depressing) suspicion that the Internet is radically changing the world as you know it, buck up. No wait, buckle up--it is. Nota profound book. Lots of story-telling to make a few good points. A fast and fun read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lewis has more noteable works
If you want to read Lewis at his best, get Moneyball or Liar's Poker.Next begins promisingly enough, with interesting vignettes on a teenage daytrader who manipulates markets with his cheerleading postings on internet financial sites and an interesting piece on a junior high kid who builds himself into a legal expert on an anonymous website, armed only with the insights he gleaned from television shows. These stories serve Lewis' premise of how technology will allow the decline of specialization and the democratization of opinion; we're moving towards a society where being properly lettered matters far less than being right.Credentials used to serve as their own validation of opinion and expertise, a self-fulfilling prophecy that begged challenge, but the internet allows anyone to opine, irrespective of their bona fides. As evidenced by the fact that you're reading my review :)
5-0 out of 5 stars Simultaneously hilarious and insightful
Michael Lewis has an almost unique talent for providing one with an intuitive feel for a subject while simultaneously making you laugh out loud.I think I learned more about Wall Street from "Liar's Poker" than all the great serious tomes I've read, while at the same time enjoying it as pure farce, and yet I was left with an increased respect for the people and institutions. How is that even possible?

4-0 out of 5 stars Still not outdated!
I just bought a second-hand copy of this book and although it has been published more than two years ago, it still contains a lot of valid information. Most of the concepts presented in here are still very important and many people have not adhered to these concepts. Just look at the section on CSS. This has been around since 1998, but not everyone is using CSS on his site. Same applies to many other technologies described here. While everyone knows about them, it does not mean that they use it or know how to use it. Great book for anyone interested in building up a good website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
