For both beginners and experts
I've taught HTML and e-commerce at the university level for about a decade now.This book is the best I have found.I use it as my personal reference.I require it for my classes.

This book is ok.I had to get it for a class.The writing is alittle hard to follow, but it is a good reference.

Great for beginners

The Bible of Metadata
I keep this book close to me at work and usually stick it in my laptop case when I leave for home. It is my bible for metadata. The first time I read it, I carefully underlined passages with a fine light pencil. Now I've tossed book decorum to the winds and use highligher pens! To mention just one general topic, Elaine Svenonius grapples with all of the key issues that trained librarians face when cataloguing digital materials. She also covers controlled vocabularies from several perspectives, and understands the challenges/difficulties of applying standard "book" classifications to rich media collections. That it took me a long time to get through this book has nothing to do with her style -- Elaine Svenonius writes clearly, often beautifully -- but rather with the amount of information and the mind-expanding concepts, which I still mull over as I wrestle at work with asset management.

Heavy going, but worth the effort
I think that a lot of people who work in information technology tend to think that the problems that we have with things like web-based search and retrieval are unique to Internet search engines and catalogue databases. Comprehensive, clear, and attractive
This is a colorful and attractive book that tells you everything you may ever need to know about creating multimedia presentations using SMIL 2.0, the second release of the World-Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language Recommendation. SMIL is an XML language for creating multimedia presentations, integrating media, temporal control and interactivity. A SMIL presentation can contain a combination of any types of media. SMIL itself is media "agnostic", and includes most media types by referencing their URL's rather than embedding them in the SMIL file itself.
An essential reference for authors and implementers
This is a remarkable book, and by far the most authoritative guide available for the SMIL languages. It serves a broad audience, and combines a readable style with complete expertise in the subject matter.

A good one to have on your shelf.
For the beginner to intermediate level blogger, there's a wealth of good stuff here. It provides a lot of good information on the subject of blogging in an easy to read style and format. I liked the author's writing/teaching style, the explanations, the graphics, all the helpful blog-related links, etc, etc.This book is a great resource which you'll probably find yourself referring to over and over again.

Obsolete.
With so many improvements in Blogger and Six Apart's Typepad, this book is by now obsolete. If you want tutorials go online and you'll find thousands that will help you start your blogging adventure.

Solid for beginners.

One of the most important books on information science

The lessons will last while the technology changes
I thought I knew a lot about building good web sites, until I started reading this book. The author, Philip Greenspun is a professor of Computer Science at MIT and has built over 100 large-scale sites. The purpose of the book is twofold: to share the author's mistakes and successful strategies so that hopefully you don't have to make the same mistakes, and secondly, to emphasize how best to leverage the collaborative power of the Internet to provide services that were impossible or impractical before. Now I know how to properly engineer an RDBMS-backed site, how to build a personalization system, how to build an online community-based system (correctly), and how to build a content management system--and tie it to the personalization system. I have already incorporated many of the core concepts of the book into my own projects. This is the best web publishing book I have read to date.

Beautiful Book
Philip Greenspun is the creator of photo.net and a very entertaining author as well. This a great book for beginners to get an overview of web publishing, online communities, and databases. Some of the specifics of the book are a little dated but the concepts are not. I often refer back to this book for ideas and inspiration. The online version of this book is free, but the print edition has great glossy pages and is packed with gratuitous, full-color pictures from Philip's image library.

Collected (but a bit jumbled) wisdom of a web pundit
This book covers such a wide range of subjects - HTML, web design, SQL, server configuration, e-commerce, accepting credit cards, scalability, futurology, search engines, choosing a database, the nature of buying software, system admin and loads more, all in great depth - that it's almost impossible to characterize the contents. It's also packed full of beautiful, but completely unrelated, photographs; all taken by the author!Read more

This Design Guide was the only reference I used to design my first website, with no prior knowledge of HTML and little understanding of the Internet on the whole.That first site, developed almost three years ago, was simple but successful and has changed little since that time despite changing designers and webmaster several times.The case studies and examples provided are informative and entertaining, and it is written in an easy-to-use format. 'Must Have' MCMS Guide
If you've ever been involved with MCMS 2002, you will know the authors of this title, and the great work they do for the Content Management Server community. They are either Microsoft employees or MVPs and are recognised experts in CMS development.
Very useful book
This book offers a hands-on approach to learning MCMS topics that mimic real world problems.Whilemost books and manuals focus on the ideal or typical scenario, this book explores how to deal with the tough scenarios where the product shortcomings need to be overcome by creative and innovative solutions. Definitive answers are provided to many of the tough questions that every developer asks when delving deep into MCMS.Working code samples make up a significant portion of the book and are extremely valuable in understanding the topics being explained.
Solid Book
This book starts out strong with 3 chapters fully devoted to creating a sample application using the Publishing API.While the code examples are copious they are (necessarily) somewhat redundant.The authors chose to create an administration tool as the most effective means of illustrating the Publishing API's capability.This was an effective technique in that it exposed the core of the API very quickly to the reader, as well as having the added benefit of communicating the purpose of the MCMS Server.If you are uncertain, as I was, on what problems Microsoft Content Management Server may or may not be the right solution for, this book will take you a long way towards understanding the product and its role in the platform.

A great book, but a misleading title.
Other reviewers have offered high praise for this book, and I strongly agree with them. However, I feel obliged to offer a few counterpoints, since most readers will purchase this book sight unseen. Great stuff for newbies!
Today, I received my copy of this amazingly simple but thorough treatment of web design and desktop publishing. I'm a freelance writer and need to ramp up my tech skills. This book is launching me ahead at incredible speed with its simple advice. Roger Parker writes like the mentor you've always wanted. I will order more of his books because he makes good sense and doesn't sound techno-crazy. Every freelancer needs this book just to keep up.

Better than the other 'Dummies'
I'm actually going to purchase the book now, having already read the book.I checked out 10books on desktop publishing at my local library and narrowed the field down to the three I thought were best in providingconcise, valuable information.Two of the three were written by RogerParker, and the Dummies book seemed written for a person who needs valuableinformation fast. Excellent Resource for Print & Electronic Designers
As a newbie to typography, I found "Type in Use" to be an excellent introduction to the field.It's written in a clear and concise manner; though it's straightforward and easy to understand, I didn't feel as though the information was watered down, either.
Great for web designers who want to improve their type skill
As a web designer, I always found adding typographical elements to my layout to be the hardest part. I would create a great looking page only to ruin it with a weak looking headline or inappropriately selected font settings. Where is the white space?
