Some clarification from the author
As the author of Symbian OS Explained, I'd like to clarify the purpose of the book and explain the rationale behind the example code.

This book can be used as a good reference but it does not serve the basic purpose.

Very Good
If you are a proficient C++ programmer, this book is perfect for you as a introduction to writing C++ on Symbian OS. It describes how Symbian OS works and show what differences exist between normal C++ and the one used while writing applications for Symbian OS.

Loaded with useful information and intermediate to expert advice
If you have a Nokia series 40 or series 60 phone, this book is indispensable. Every chapter has something even a old hand with Nokia phones will not know. Codes to find the phones version and address information, ways to customize the menus, and alternative programming and settings. In all, this book is "the manual that didn't come in the box."

A good base for UIQ
I ordered this book because I was new to Symbian/UIQ. I found it easier and more convenient to use than the SDK on-line doc. Good Starting Point
Having written software for 15 years for UNIX and Windows platforms, my move to the mobile space has been educational and humbling.Trying to learn to program for Symbian using the SDK and publicly available docs is daunting at best.The SDK docs are sparse, poorly written and provide a terrible search experience. Should've been titled - Programming the Symbian UIQ platform
If you were looking for a deeper discussion of Symbian for Mobile Phones than the "Programming the Series 60 platform and Symbian OS", you've come to the wrong place. "Different" would be a more accurate word. Part of the problem is that it was put together by agglomerating works from various ( 18 !) authors.The writing style shifts from first to third person and back a lot. Read more

Great book
Fives stars is a rating I've only given to Endless Summer.This book is an extensive volume on J2ME MIDP 2 and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in MIDP 2 development.Less than a fifth of the book focuses exclusively on Symbian but the detailed contextual API info adds significant value over some other books I've reviewed on J2ME that don't cover optional packages or simply 'mention' less-used packages without explaining how they are used.It would only be perfect if it were a bit more thorough covering more packages in greater detail- but that's what Sun's specs are for anyway.Enjoy.

Not for programmers
Haven't read the whole book since I already knew MIDP 1.0, and the only reason I bought this one was that at the time I bought it was the only book I could find on MIDP 2.0.This rating will only be based on the more advanced stuff (APIs in MIDP 2.0). The author spend a lot of time talking about you can do with MIDP 2.0 and how to code some different applications which I think is covered pretty well.However, the applications I have looked at does not work.There are even classes that are missing, as well as other errors in the examples.I don't think anyone learning java wants to deal with this."Teach yourself java with J2ME in 21 days" is a very good book if you know a little bit of programming, but are new to j2me.

Not for programmers, may be for standards' fans !
This book is more like a standards specification. The author goes on and on in circles without getting to the heart of the matter quickly. For example the first example, is discussed after 50 pages of boring presentation. And yet, the example is not a simple smooth starting point. No, it's a simple game !

Almost useless
Considering how features of a phone can vary from model to model or production run to production this book really doesn't address how manufacturers implement comms on a phone. Maybe Bluetooth basics is decent, but the rest? You're better off at forum.nokia.com or www.newlc.com forums to get things working. I really never found anything in this book that helped me. For instance, IrDA programming. The whole section is IrDA basics, I don't want the basics! I want to know the silly stuff Symbian does.......

Don't bother if Windows is a client
This book may be of value if you are trying to get two Symbian devices to communicate.But if you need to communidate with another OS, it is sorely lacking.Read more

High Level
If you want to know Symbian from a high level, buy this book.

No good for beginners
As a semi-experienced C++ programmer, I found this book utterly useless. The book contains no full working program examples. What code is offered is so out-of-context as to be indecypherable. It makes no effort to get you up and running quickly.

A bit dated but still pretty good
There are only a handful of Symbian books available yet, and this one is the best of them. It is not a tutorial but a fairly good reference. It does a good job of explaining concepts as well, for instance I really like the discussion of descriptors in chapter 5. PSP review
I recommend this book to anybody who's interested in Symbian development. It's a very thorough material, you can not only begin to deal with EPOC with the help of this book, but get useful help when you're a professional. Though some information is a little bit outdated, it's still the best book I've ever read about Symbian OS.

Rubbish - better documentation available for Palm + PocketPC
1000 pages of un-user friendly material. Programming for the symbian platform is difficult at the best of times and the supporting material on the website only hinders experienced developers (I have over 10 years C and C++) experience. Some of the material is now out of date and SDK documentation is more helpful for development.Poor documentation is hampering our development efforts. Wireless Java for Symbian Devices is interesting but the Java implementation on Symbian EPOC is terrible. ... Read more
