4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for PMP prep
I used this book along with the PMBOK. There are some topics in this books that weren't part of the PMBOK. Studying both these books helped me to pass the exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best option...
While this book has a number of useful questions, there are also a number of errors throughout the book both in the preparation materials and in the actual questions. I wouldn't start with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed on my first try
I used this book and the PMBOK and passed on my first try with a 167/200.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!
This book helped me to pass the 70-270 test.It had some information that I did not see anywhere else.I have used cram exam books before and I love the series.I would recommend this book and others for anybody studying to pass any tests.Awesome book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hit or Miss but Ultimately Useful
Overall, I find this particular book useful in combing through a lot of intricate details of the Windows XP operating system.Though given that, I don't think this resource alone will help you adequately prepare for the exam, which is something the authors themselves note. This book I feel tries to strike a middle ground, but fails in a few regards:
2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible for a Newbie...
I've been in the IT industry doing mostly web design, so I'm not too familiar with the server/networking side of things.. anyhow this book assumes you know what you're doing...example .. first thing I got stuck on was using the Remote Installation Services..spent three whole days and finally gave up..once you get stuck you're pretty much screwed if you don't have anyone there to help you.I'm going to have to go out and get another book... something more detailed. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for passing the exam
This was my primary resource in preparations for the exam, which I passed easily. Material is well presented, although I have found several mistakes and there are a lot of superfluous "lesson reviews" and "lesson summaries" at the end of each lesson.
4-0 out of 5 stars Technically very clear and to the point, but lacks all the info
This book is pretty good along the lines of technical manuals. It keeps the information clear and lays it out in a way that makes it easy to understand with no fillers added. The activities at the end of the book are a little much, so I mostly ignored them. Unfortunately one thing this book lacks is ALL the information you might be tested for on the exam. For example, the book does not go into detail on the Authorization Manager. The new revisions might but check the ones you buy for it. Mine did not have it, however the software that came with the book asked questions on these different utilities that weren't covered in the book at all. It was a little suprising to be honest. But overall it was a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Far too many technical inaccuracies
I'm sick of reading reviews about how a particular study guide is a good book for beginers. The title says exam 70-294, but this book falls a bit short. It gives basic coverage of active directory concepts and is technically inacurate in many areas. If your going to spend the time trying to learn this stuff, learn it right.A much better book on the subject matter is the active directory technical reference for windows server 2003, also by MS Press. In fact save some time and money...Just buy the technical reference. It will prepare you for both the 70-294 and 70-297 exams.Belive me, the only reason I read this book (70-294 self paced study guide)after reading the technical reference is because I was forced to teach a course from it.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is way too light for this exam
The methodology of the troubleshooting process is the easy part. This book would have been much better if it had broken down the troubleshooting sections for each layer and given you some concrete ideas about the most common things you might see.Definitely, an extensive treatment of debug output with explanations of what to look for would have been good.Bottom line, read the book so you know the methodology, but get another source because this one won't do it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost no relation to actual exam
Cisco should be embarassed to call this book 'official self-study test preparation'.Perhaps it should say 'Some basic thoughts'...The relation to the exam I just took was nowhere to be found.I think this book prep'd me for 1 or 2 questions out of 64.I'm totally disgusted.CiscoPress has lost all credibility in my mind. This book is a discrace.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for passing CIT exam
To summarize, this book is focused on troubleshooting methodology. It goes over procedures, guidelines, and methods. It is not intended as a specific blow by blow review of troubleshooting technology - you are assumed to already have this information through studying and job experience. The author is straightforward in his writing and does a good job of boiling down the information, and physically it is considerably thinner than the other study guides.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Book
Not for the light reader, the book has one thousand pages of guidelines, detailed information, hands on labs, review questions and quizzes. The final sections of the book contains a full review, an actual exam and a section on SQL basics. Found the book contained many excellent illustrations which delved into the details of Windows Services, Web Services, COM+, SOAP, Remoting and other distributed topics. Recommended over the 70-320 guide by MS Press, but if you have time. Read that one first followed by this one to "burn in" the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book
Amazing book - you start off scared of new topics, afraid you won't understand - but the book turns it around and just explains everything like it's super easy and natural stuff. Great authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will make you pass the exam
I just finished my last MCAD test this morning and swore I would come back and write reviews on all the books I used when I was done.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very thin
I bought this based on the previous reviews. The book is very thin in content with about 250 cards per exam in the boook itself. It does not nearly cover the needed information. The CD is better with more flash cards per exam, and a testing engine, but still thin in coverage and explanations. It has information you can use, but not enough. If it was structured toward the exam requrements it would have been better. If you used the other Cisco press books, you don't need this, not even at the discounted price. As a comparison, the CCNA flash cards book was much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
In preparing for the 642-801, I found that there was too much information in the Paquet/Teare book to remember it all. I have no working experience with this exam topic so needed a way to fine tune my understanding.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
Generally a pain to use and work with. The format of the book is bulky and difficult - you have to HOLD it open.As someone else mentioned, it crashed my Palm hard.It also wouldn't run on my desktop PC or my laptop, so the CD was worse than useless - it was a a big waste of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Routing TCP/IP Volume I Still Awesome and relevant!!!
I recently purchased this book based on the rave reviews even with an updated second edition off the press. I can honestly say that this book is Awesome in detail and explanation and is still extremely relevant to understanding the how too's and processes involved in routing tcp/ip. The most amazing feature about this book is how well explained and the book makes topics that would normally seem dificult or confusing easily understood, in other words grandma could learn how routing tcp/ip works from reading this book!
5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to understand the world of IGPs
If any book was ever considered as the MUST HAVE BIBLE for Interior Routing Protocols - then Jeff Doyle's first effort on IGPs is THE book (how many clich's do you want in one sentence)!!The book goes through at a very even pace - dissecting and describing the majority of both open-standard IGPs (OSPF, RIP and a little on ISIS) and Cisco-proprietary IGPs (IGRP and it's beefier brother - EIGRP).The book also includes some invaluable appendixes - including tutorials on working with Binary and hex.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good review of currently available software
Title:Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent kickstart
Excellent kickstart for the budding pentester (such as myself) Covers as far as i can see most areas, and creating an apetite for more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Four stars if you don't have any other security assessment books
I am not sure why Penetration Tester's Open Source Toolkit (PTOST) was published. If you have no other security assessment books, you may find PTOST helpful.Otherwise, I don't believe this book offers enough value to justify purchasing it.Other books -- some published by Syngress -- cover some of the same ideas, and 5 of PTOST's chapters are published in other books anyway.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great intro to VB.Net but poor certification prep
If you are new to Visual Basic.Net then this book is great for getting a basic understanding of the language. If you are using it to introduce yourself to the language then I would highly recommend it.However, this book miserably fails its' title in preparing for the 70-306 exam. 2-0 out of 5 stars Frustrating
This book is chalk full of errors.I am not at all convinced that anyone went back through and actually tried to reproduce the examples and assignments found in this book.If you like a challenge and enjoy debugging someone else's code, this is the book for you.If, however, you feel that your time is better spent actually studying for the exam I would skip this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
This book is alright, but it does not take into consideration all OS's on which the code might be running (xp users beware on the globalization chapter) and some of the end of chapter questions don't even seem to be based on data discussed in the chapter. That all being said, there aren't many other options exam prep books for 70-306 and this one is at least easy to follow along with although I don't think it is in depth enough for the exam. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Okay to use but not as your only book
This book does cover the material however, it is organized somewhat funny, a little difficult to follow and the IPv6 section is very weak. If you are new to these subjects this book is not for you. It is easier if you have years of hands on experience or have read other books first.I used it as a complement with the Doyle and new Cisco Press CCIE book plus my own lab to pass the BSCI in a couple of weeks. The CD test engine is too easy. One tip to pass the BCSI, practice, practice, practice.
3-0 out of 5 stars it doesnt cover everthing..
I did read this book entire, my practice tests score were average of 98 to 100%, but I did not pass the exam.
4-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
Studying this book finally enabled me to pass the BSCI.Make no mistake though; this is not a great book.It is poorly organized, it is full of errors (even ones not stated in the errata - I can rattle off quite a few) and basically hard to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent
This is an excellent book, and the only book that you can use to learn Java programming basics while preparing for the exam. I have always wondered why such a book did not exist. After all, who can determine better than Sun, a basic course in Java, and Sun does it by determining the SCJP exam objectives. This book is like a course in basic Java programming within the scope of the SCJP exam objectives. The author combines the two tasks (teaching basic Java programming and preparing you for the SCJP exam) very successfully without going beyond the scope of the exam objectives (Chapter 1 is the only extra addition). He does it by shuffling the exam objectives around and by using his classroom kind of presentation style. There is a perfect logical flow throughout the book:I love the way the material is presented and how all the concepts are clearly defined. It has removed many ambiguities, doubts, and confusions that I had about some concepts.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Java 5 Programming Book
I already have the SCJP certification for an older Java version. Now I would like to get certification for J2SE 5. So I bought this book. Like the SCBCD Exam Study Kit by the same author, this book explains all the concepts in a way that is easy to read and understand. I especially like the complete code examples that I'm experimenting with and the Exam's Eye View section that highlights the important concepts. The Exam Quick Prep Appendix is also cool. Will be helpful to skim through important points before the exam. Visuals, tables, notes, cautions are all in right amount and very helpful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book: He Did It Again
This is a great SCJP certification book which can also be used to learn basic Java programming. Previously, I used Dr. Sanghera's SCBCD Exam Study Kit (from Manning) to pass my SCBCD exam, and liked that book very much. Now, I have read this book from cover to cover to upgrade my SCJP certification, and I would say: He did it again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great one for SCJD
It is one of the best books on latest version of SCJD J2SE5. It gives you insight of project and way to complete your SCJD project with confidence. You should buy if you are preparing for SCJD like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for SCJD and standalone
Most of the time people who are preparing for SCJD will buy this book but it is good beyond that. Second edition give you practical example on actual project. It is kind of parallel to what you are doing in SCJD. Author is active member on javaranch and gives very useful tips to all post in SCJD forum. I think people who want to improve Java skills on application side should look into this book as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars SCJD Exam with J2SE 5
Let's face it.The Sun Certified Java Developers Exam is tough. If you are serious about passing, this is an excellent book for anyone wishing to avoid the common pitfalls associated with many of the projects. The authors reveal various approaches to many of the issues that need to be resolved, discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of each.I found the authors' information on Threading, Building the GUI, logging, configuration, RMI vs. Sockets and "putting it all together" all extremely helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good base
This is a good book, it will get you studying in the right direction. The contents do cover what you will expect in the 70-297 test however I strongly suggest that in addition to this book you use an online test preparation tool (I used Self Test). You will need the practice when facing the verbose (-vv) questions on the test.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide!
This book was excellent in preparing for the 70-297 exam. Each chapter introduces new concepts, and builds upon the previous chapters in a very logical and easy to understand method. There are many real world examples, and great practice questions for review after each chapter. The CD included with the book has excellent additional materials as well.I would purchase more books from Brad Price and Sybex for my future study needs!A+ all around. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!
Reading and understanding the content of this book, and the one written by 'Sierra and Bates', are the major contributing factors in getting me a 91% passing grade on the first attempt!

5-0 out of 5 stars Passed SCJP the first attempt.
This is an excellent study resource and I would recommend it to anyone pursuing their java programmer certification.Be sure to suppliment this book with plenty of practice tests and you should do fine on the exam.Good Luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST book on non-j2ee java.
I have read over a dozen books on the java and this by far the best one for learning the language in its entirety.Obviously, this book can't cover everything but it gives a very thorough and in-depth introduction. If you can only have one book on java 2, make this the one you pick. Many other books on the subject waste tons of space with simple examples that aren't very informative. This book cuts through the nonsense and gives you all it can in its 700 pages.Great explanations, Great Code Samples, all around top notch. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Renewed Faith
After attempting to read the MS study guide, I had come to the conclusion that the Microsoft Solutions Framework was just a bunch of UML rebranding, hastily cut and pasted together by lone wolf code hacks with no interest in organized software development. This book has led me to believe that I may be wrong. It IS a bunch of UML rebranding, but MSF still forms a lucid useful framework.
1-0 out of 5 stars Digital Rights Management - I am not a thief!
Careful about the eBook version of this book. I downloaded it at home, and unbeknownst to me activated it. When I took it to work via USB drive, it complained it was already activated. My workplace proxy firewall won't let me re-activate it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Good Info but not for Test
Just got back from the test.I failed it.Not because I didn't have the proper knowledge....I was passing every practice test in the book...but because, for whatever reason, this book did not prepare me for the questions actually asked on the test. Due to NDA, I can't get any more specific than that. Wonderful book for anyone wanting a quick overview (400+ pages) but not the tool for passing the test.I've been developing in .NET for 6 yrs now. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oblivion and Perdition
I purchased this book with the expectation that it would help me prepare for the exam. The CD provides practice exams and other resources to give one the impression they are on their way to certification. However, there are numerous errors in the book as well as on the CD, particularly with the "Edge Test" software, which incorrectly grades tests and does not allow users to select the right answers. This issue is actually moot, since the practice tests actually do not address problems presented in the certification exam. I recommend using the on-line resources affiliated with the testing organizations. They also provide discounted vouchers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful book despite all the errors!
Let me just get it out of the way by mentioning first that this book contains many errors - perhaps more than an average technical book. However, most are typographical and do not degrade the value of the book that much.
4-0 out of 5 stars The best book to start
This book was a good way to start studying for the exam. After finishing the book you are almost ready.
