5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!
This book is one of the best books written on Excel. I recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn or brush up on their excel skills. A must have in your collection if only to go back to every once in a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Resource for Beginner to Intermediate Users
I ordered Microsoft Excel 2000: Step by Step to aid myslef in becoming more acclimated in the Excel platform.I have made spreadsheets and charts before using Excel 95 & 97, but it had been some time since I last employed Excel. Also, I never claimed to be the Excel Master that others profess to be.That's why I purchased this book - to not only make me proficient with Excel, but to bolster my abilities so that I will pass the Microsoft User Specialist Excel Master exam and become a Certified Excel Master and receive my pretty little certificate in the mail.5-0 out of 5 stars You will learn Excel with this book
This book will get you up and running with using Excel in no time. From the sizes of other books out there, this book does not cover everything, but it is excellent for beginners of Excel. The book covers macros and explains VBA, which would be the next thing for you to learn if you want to unleash the power of Excel to a higher level. Some other notable topics covered are pivot tables and charts, and the book has many useful tips for getting things done quickly such as generating lists, picking from lists, and covers many other tips for reducing typing in data entry. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MICROSOFTEXCEL 2000 POWER PROGRAMMING /VBA
VERY EXCELLENT RESPONSE FROM SUPPLIER AND THE PROGRAM IS WHAT THE USER NEEDED.

3-0 out of 5 stars Might be ok for some users
Charts are not given much coverage. Chart data is not given much coverage. From a programmer's point of view, simple excel vba object graphs and explanations of properties would be more helpful. Some examples come straight from the MSDN Office developer sections. I really wish authors would refrain from the cut and paste of the MSDN. Consumers of this type of material are looking for more than MSDN help files. All that said....5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Resource
I have found this book to be absolutely fantastic.I am not sure it is for the beginner, but for someone who has a little knowledge of VB it is an excellant refresher. The book is well written and seems to flow in a logical sequence. It is very easy to understand and examples are plentiful.I have been tinkering with macros in Excel for about a year and the book is bringing VBA and Excel together for me.I have have already cut some of the coding in my modules in half by using the techniques found in the book. This book is definitely going to be come one of my major references when it comes to using VBA in Excel.I have certainly gotten my money's worth out of this book and will be looking for other books written by John Walkenbach. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginner's but good
Those with no programming experience should not buy this book. It is helpful in the very detailed examples of what Excel VBA can do for you.The last chapter on Pivot Tables seems a little out of step with the rest of the book. Also, the theory behind what you are doing is not explored so it is a bit superficial. But, as far as getting your feet wet, this is a great place to start.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
The book does not do a good job with the fundamentals of VBA. Very brief in its explanation of objects, properties, and methods. Gives plenty of examples but often refers you to Excel help to find out more info about a particular item. If I wanted to do that I would not have bought the book. Very disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars trs bon livre de dpart
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resourse
This is a comprehensive reference book that gives you all the information you need to master Excel. It is detailed and easy to follow.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many pages, not too much content...
If you are an absolute beginner 80% of this book is for you. If you bought it to explore the capabilities and more complex tools of Excel, you are at a loss. I've been using Excel for 10 years. Mostly for corporate needs in an office environment and as a calculation tool for some of my MBA classes. Bought this one to get more insight, but did not find it useful. Most of the pages are spent to describe the simplest of tasks, such as formatting, listing of built-in formulas etc...4-0 out of 5 stars Great Coverage!
I agree with the previous reviewer that the book is logically organized poorly for referencing certain operations.I think this is a very small drawback for the amount of information that this one source provides.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office @2000 -ShellyCashman Series Book
The book itself is very good. I would recommend it to those who are just starting to learn and for those who need to brush up on their skills or use as a desk reference. I did not like the "ring -binder" form as it seems flimsy and already was looking used when I got it due to shipping. I would suggest the other form for future reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book just skip the first chapters about computers!!!
The book is great but it is written for people who never had experience with computers. So I would advise anyone to skip those intial chapters. I highly recommend getting the spiral bound edition because the book is about the size of a major city's Yellow Pages and it is easier to handle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surpassed my Expectations!
I consider myself to be an average-skill-level Excel user, and hesitated ordering this book because I was afraid it would be too technical and difficult to understand. But I purchased it anyway, and am so glad I did. I've been getting involved with more and more complicated spreadsheets, and thus needed some help. And Escape from Excel Hell provided just the help I needed.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Don't have time to investigate Excel problems
I often don't have time to investigate solutions to certain problems I encounter in Excel.I, like most Excel users, end up building elaborate work-arounds that solve my problem ASAP.Well, I picked up this book yesterday and I have already found fixes that would have helped me save hours of work had I known about them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right
What a great book! I use Excel in my work, but I'm no expert, and I'm in constant 'Excel Hell'. Last week I had to get out a spreadsheet and the data wouldn't sort correctly (I bet this is familiar territory). When I saw the 'Escape from Exel Hell' book I grabbed it in desperation. Well I found out about the 'trigger happy' tendencies of the program when sorting, and how I can select data to avoid confusion and get results. Everything was laid out so simply, clearly, and with such a practical approach I was able to solve my sort problems in time to submit the darn spreadsheet.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment--information hard to find, incomplete
This book has been a real disappointment. It has two main problems. The first problem is that it's very difficult to locate relevant information--the index is very poorly constructed, and even obvious and common tasks can be hard to track down. For example, I needed to know how to make a data point on a dot plot be hollow. This isn't an unusual task, and it's quite easy, *once you know how.*Good luck finding out how from this book, though.1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
This book is a complete waste. Completely unorganized and hard to follow sequences. Examples are poorly structured and hard to understand. Don't buy this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and unhelpful
This is one of the most disorganized and unhelpful books I have ever read. Let's say you want to construct a formula. Ghapter 10 is called "Constructing Excel Formulas." Great! But wait: no where in chapter 10 is there a section on actually constructing the formulas. After telling us how to see a sum, it jumps into editing. We haven't even constructed anything to edit! Or let's say you want to hide a column. Look in the index under "hiding" and it tells you to go to page 583. On 583 it says "[y]ou can hide information by using the drilldown technique on PivotTables." How helpful can you be! Actually, on page 582 it gives some more hints: "You can hide [in italics] (page 470) rows or columns that you don't want to show...." And so the reader goes to page 470 to find out how to do this. On page 470 it says "You can maintain a chart's integrity [?] even if you hide [in italics] (page 521) the data.... Ok, the little bugger is on page 521 now, eh. And, indeed, on page 521, we are led full circle: "Of course, because Excel users learn quickly how to hide [in italics] (page 470 [also in italics!]) and unhide (page 583 [?]) cells, hiding provides very little real protection." Fortunately, if Excel users use this book, hiding cells will afford great protection. No one would ever be able to "unhide" them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for Just Basics
This book is fine if all you want to do is basic spreadsheets. If cutting, pasting, basic formatting, or creating VERY simple formulas is all you need to do then this book is fine. However, if you are trying to do anything more complicated forget using this book. For instance, the section on creating Macros wasn't very detailed. In addition, the book is completely missing any explanation of how to use the more complicated formula functions (there is no mention of how to do any of the statistical functions). Probably 80% of what an average user needs is in this book. But for anything beyond the basics, forget it; you'll need another reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
I foudn the book compleely useless and a waste of money. It explains nothing. After studying this book for two hours I was unable to do anything whatsoever in Excel. Look elsewhere.

This is a good book for a non stressfull introduction, but there are few good hands on examples. I've found that by doing complex detailed step by step examples you can learn more faster. The learnkey.com website has a good excel class ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs Improvement
This is NOT a book for beginners; if you're new to Microsoft Excel, avoid this book! Even though the back of the book says it's a reference for beginning to advanced users, this book will confuse you if you're a beginner. It's a book for people who already have some knowledge about Excel; I'm in the intermediate to advanced user category, and even I get confused by some of the explanations provided in the book.5-0 out of 5 stars BETTER DEAL
I would recommend buying the package (step-by-step interactive cd + this book = $30 cost) 4-0 out of 5 stars Very complete coverage of Excel
Running Excel 2000 provides a very complete look at using Excel in most day to day situations. The general usage information is well structured and each topic is covered in detail.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro To What Excel Can Do for people with basic Office Skills
A friend at work gave me this book. It's a great little intro to excel basics and gives you a taste of the more advanced functions as well. This is a great overview for anyone interested in exploring the basic functions of excel. I used what I learned to build some nifty spreadsheets for my department. Before I started with this book I had very limited experience with Excel and this got me proficient with the basic range of excel functions and more. Even used my knowledge in a job interview test and I got the job!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory tutorial.
I had tried reading through the entire list of Excel tutorials at the local library. All of them were disappointing to me, as they spent so much time extolling the glories of Excel that they never stopped to tell you what Excel was actually good for!And then they jumped right into complicated snippets of examples that were unrelated to anything in the real world, or even each other. These snippets were again designed to show off the glories of Excel, not to do anything practical, like build an actual real-life spreadsheet.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the user totally new to Excel / PCs
I am an Excel instructor. This is the book I reccommend if your student (or you) are clueless about what Excel is or how to use a spreadsheet program. Step-by-step and lots of screen shots. If you're not clueless, get a more advanced book.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the teach-yourself person
This book just beats the tar out of the comparable ". . . For Dummies" and ". . . For Complete Idiots" analogs. The exercises step you through all of the basics of Excel and the color images show you what will really be on the screen. Each step is clearly marked and there are no obvious leaps to another level. Various shades of black and white can show a great deal, but there are times when only color will do. This is especially true when color coding is used to differentiate different key aspects of the display, which is done in Excel. This is the book that I recommended be adopted for future classes in Excel and the one I would use if I were to teach the class again.

4-0 out of 5 stars from novice to advanced in under 3 hours
This is my first experience with this series, and what a positive experience it was! The layout is very easy to follow, the diagrams areaccurate and attractive, and the text clear.I barely knew how to useExcel at all when I started, but after under 3 hours with the book, I'mconfident that I could do any major project just using the information Ilearned while reading it.Kudos to whoever designed the order ofdifficulty and chapter headings, because the progression of ideas naturallyfollows. The chapters on using complex formulas and creating charts wereparticularly strong. In fact, even if you don't know how to use your mouse,if you read the book chronologically, you'd learn that too, followed by ofcourse more complex things.I knew Excel was a powerful program.Afterreading this book, I feel that I can put that knowledge to work inpractical ways.If you are a visual learner and have trouble following the"Idiot Guides," this series is a great alternative. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Review- Simplified
This book was too basic to be of any use. The book is not set up so one can look up a specific task and then see how to do it. The only book I have ever returned, and I buy two or three books a month.

3-0 out of 5 stars Price online
Whatever you do, do not buy this book at one of the store locations because they charge you full price, which seems funny since it is sold for much less online. The book was good, but paying full price for it like I did, is a big mistake.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressed
I'm quite impressed and satisfied with this book and with the entire Simplified series. This book presents an excellent introduction to and overview of Microsoft Excel 2000. It is very accessible to beginners and provides useful information for more experienced users. For visual learners (like myself), the illustrations are a great help.Read more
