5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Exchange 2003
I like this book because it is easy to read and it is clear. Of course, you will enjoy better this book with prior exchange experience or training. Microsoft has done a great job on their Exchange 2003 class. Combine the two and you will get a good start on Exchange installation, maintenance, and architecture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little Exchange 2003 Admin book
There have been several of these types of books published by MS Press.Several years ago I purchased the Exchange Pocket Consultant. These books, and the information provided by William Stanek, are great.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I spend most of my time working with SQL Server, but recently I had to take over and rebuild our Exchange. As I've had good success with Stanek's other books, I picked this one up the week before to help me get up to speed on Exchange, and it did an excellent job. I successfully upgraded, had all our servers up and running by Monday morning and we have an extensive multiple server configuraiton with OWA, wireless, and X.400 MTAs. Exchange Administrator Pocket Consultant is by far the one Exchange book I can't recommend highly enough. Get it, you'll be glad to have it on hand. I refer to this book constantly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very poor!!
I wouldn't waste your money. I am only on chapter 2 and the mistakes in here are stacking up. Spelling mistakes, incorrect information and questions that say to pick an answer from a to g with the correct answer being h make it far from the ideal book to build your confidence or knowledge.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I've just bought the book from amazon, and first of all what I can say about it is that it's very cheap comparing if I bought it here in portugal. the price here is around 83 dollars, so I could almost buy 3 books with that money. really, buying from abroad is much more pleasant than buying in portugal... As for the book... well, better wait for it! :D

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so bad
I got this book with a little over 1.5 years of exchange experience and I know quite a bit but thought i could learn alot more and certify in it.Well this book did help me the 2nd time through reading it.The biggest help really was the practice exams.I took the study exams and learned more that way then with reading.I would recommend this book only to those that actually understand Windows 2003, 2000 and NT both directory structure and network structure. There is alot of networking involved such as firewalls and opening ports.Overall it is a good book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Explanations but not Practical
This book has generally good easily digestible explanations for Exchange 2003.I really appreciate the informal down-to-Earth style and discussion of a lot of pieces. I was especially happy to see some good coverage of LDAP, IMAP, and POP configuration, which is seldom adequately covered in other Exchange books.
4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, not too bad
I would hardly consider this book "Mastering Exchange" but the author does take the time to step you through all the property pages and settings so you at least get a basic idea of what it all means. You will have a solid basic understanding when you are done but you certainly won't be a master by any stretch of the imagination. I found several errors throughout the book specifically related to Windows and networking. The author should stick to Exchange because when the topic shifts to something else, I had my doubts about what I was reading. For instance, I believe the author stated that in an NT 4.0 Domain, if a PDC goes down, the other DC's elect a new one. WHAT!!!! Maybe a browser, but not a PDC. Its been a while since I read the book but I am pretty sure I read that in a side bar. As I said, overall, not bad if you what a basic intro to Exchange 2003. The title should be changed to Exchange 2003 basics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poor writing style
Maybe the content of this book is ok, but the writer has constant urge to put useless text lines and useless personal opinions between the technical explenations. This shouldn't be a story book ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some useful info but must wade through chatty kathy style
I need to learn Exchange Fast. Too many paragraphs seem to open or be sprinkled with dialog that doesn't pass on substantive information. For instance, "If you are like me, you are saying to yourself...'self..."or "One of the most discouraging things is for a user to call up and say they can't reach domain xyz." Multiply this by 300 and 30% of the book is fluff.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Learning and Reference Book!
This is a great book for learning the guts of Exchange 2003.Too many of the books of today are designed to help you pass a test and learn items related to the test.Well, this is not that book, fortunately. However, the knowledge in the book will help significantly when it comes test time.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too general to be as helpful as could be possible
I agree with another reviewer that there is not enough of how to do the tasks in question. There is a great deal of 'skimming' subjects without explanation leaving the reader to find out from other sources. For example, in Chapter 1, there are numererous mentions of HTTP/DAV and DAVEx (referring to the davex (DLL that handles communications between the Exchange back-end server and IIS) but there is no explanation as to what it does or how it works.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Introduction to Exchange
As an MCSE, I gave this book 4 stars for two reasons: the CD contains a 120 day trial version of Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition, and the text provides a good overview of Exchange 2003 features suitable for MCSE test prep. I did not rate this book with 5 stars because it is presented as an "Administrator's Companion," which I felt was stretching it a bit. As a previous reviewer has stated, there are better alternatives for strictly "desk reference companions" to Exchange; however, I was pleasantly surprised by how readable the book was, given that it is a Microsoft Press publication.
1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time for an Exchange Administrator
If you are an Exchange Administrator who wants to upgrade his support skills to Exchange 2003 this book is too basic.Case in point, Chapter 10 Monitoring Exchange Server 2003."... Windows Server 2003 records many events in its own event logs."... "Windows maintains three distinct logs" (Application, Security, and System) "You will encounter five types of events in the three logs, and a unique icon identifies each event type so that you can easily disntiguish between the information entries and the error entries"
1-0 out of 5 stars This book has many faults
After reading this book to find some information with Active Directory Connectors, I found errors that the author should have known better. For example, the book states that the Exchange ADC can only be installed on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller.... this is completely false.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for both new and seasoned Exchange admins
Jim McBee has done it again by writing an amazing book on Exchange 2003 administration.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the professional on the field!

This book is a pretty good reference manual. It is better than most of the other books in explaining topics without a lot of extra techical jargon or fluff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Migration Guide for Exchange 2003 !!!
If you are about to tackle a Migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003 or from Exchange 2000 to Exchange Server 2003, this book is the guide you have been looking for. The author will tell you what you need to know in order to plan your migration and design the new Windows/Exchange 2003 environment. The book lists all the tools out there that can help you make your life a lot easier and it will take you through the process in a step-by-step fashion. On top of all the author does a wonderful work in aticipating most posible questions from the reader. This book is a must have tool for a smooth Migration to Exchange 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Resource!!!
We just completed our migration to Exchange 2003, and this book helped us plan the process, gave us a solid outline on how to test the migration process, and walked us through our live production migration. The book also helped us better understand the administration tools in Exchange 2003 along with tips on ongoing maintenance and management practices that we have put in place. 5-0 out of 5 stars Security Is The New Watchword
A few years ago (I'm told) Bill Gates called all of the developers together and told them that the big thing it was necessary for Microsoft to do was to implement strong security systems in their mainstream products. I don't know if this is true, but the biggest changes in their 2003 series of products is greatly increased security emphasis.
5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta have it.
In today's environment of spam, virus, and bad things in general, knowing how to protect yourself is a very valuable commodity. 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT book on Exchange 2003 Security!!
If you're going to pick up a book on Microsoft Exchange Server security, this is *the* book for you.Great and comprehensive coverage on everything to do with Microsoft Exchange Server from one of the foremost Exchange Security experts in the industry. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seriously interested in understanding what's entailed in Exchange-related security, including some ground-breaking content on compliance (Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPPA, SEC, etc.) and legislation pertaining to e-mail ... which alone is well worth the price of the book!Highly recommended!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast answers to common questions
I find this a great resource when you need to administer Exchange, especially for 5.5 to 2003 admins. Everything is well written, with examples given using the GUI, command prompt and scripting.
4-0 out of 5 stars SIMULTANEOUSCOVERAGEFORBOTH2000AND2003EDITIONS
It is not easy to judiciously cover successive editions of any given software in a single book, but I must say that the efforts of the authors of this book are commendable. Any system administrator who shares his time working with both Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 would find this book indispensable. Its contents prove that getting to understand new versions of mission-critical technologies do not always mean starting from scratch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Handy set of recipes for Exchange administrators
The cookbook style really works for a topic like Exchange server maintenance. The style defines a set of recipes where each recipe covers a single question; e.g. Rehoming Public Folders. Then it discusses the problem, gives a solution, and then discusses how the solution actually works. It gives you insight into the workings of Exchange within a practical framework.

5-0 out of 5 stars Want to learn all about Exchange and Outlook?
I have to disagree with the reviewer who says there is not a lot of depth in this book.Sure, the author does leave out some topics but he clearly states that they can either really mess up Outlook or that they are not supported by Microsoft which can get you into trouble down the road.Otherwise, this book is the bible for Exchang and Outlook development bar none.I origianlly got it to learn how to integrate our corporate CRM system with Outlook (our sales reps live in Outlook!).The book is well written, has lots of samples and gave me the kick start I needed to get my job done.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
This is a good example of a book written by an author who just wanted to "write" and finish a book. I doubt if the author really knows the subject.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
After purchasing this book and skimming through all of it while reading the sections I was interested in more thoroughly (VBScript and Custom Forms), and then going through everything a 2nd time, I was extremely disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
The book is very well written. The screen shots are also very helpful. It's very good compared to other Exchange 5.5 books.

1-0 out of 5 stars uninformative & inaccurate
useless if you need troubleshooting help.some info is actually inaccurate for Exchange 5.5!stay away.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is poorly written and uninformative.
Anxious to supplement the poor documentation that came with our new Windows Nt Small Business Server, I thought this introductory book would be helpful.I couln't have been more wrong. The author spent pages todescribe the obvious (things like what menus look like) and frustrate thereader (we'll explain that later)I found the style insulting and childishand the content lacking. To the author I would say, "Stop trying tobe cute, and just give us the nuts and bolts.Anyone who is interested inExchange Server starts with a level of computer sophistication that yourstyle only insults." ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Far Too Basic
Other Exam Cram books are pretty good, but this book is the exception. It is far too general and seems copied from help files. The index is limited, e.g. only one reference for global catalog, and the over author's knowledge seemed questionable when he documents requirements for a global catalog and a domain controller (page 17) and fails to realize a global catalog is a domain controller.
4-0 out of 5 stars not bad if you want to simply pass the exam
This was the only book I read before taking Exam 70-284 to become MCSA: Messaging 2003 certified, and I scored an 850.The book covers the essentials that you _need_ to know, and it was helpful to go through the scenarios and actually play with the server in a Virtual PC session.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice prep guide
ExamCram books have gotten a well-deserved reputation for being lightweight and insufficient as a primary study guide. This book is an exception to that rule, however; it is much thicker (almost 500 pages) than most in its series and more comprehensive. I attribute much of that to co-author Orin Thomas, who also co-authored the Microsoft 70-292/70-296 and 70-299 Training Kits, two of the best study guides I've used yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply an Excellent Exchange Book
This one of the best books I have had in my life. Not only provides information about the entire Exchange topic that a professional Exchange Administrator will need. It also provides a large amount of information that you must to know in order to ensure a healthy life of your Exchange organization.
1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
Unfortunately this book is not for those of us who need "how to" guidance. It is full of useless information and opinion, but very little substance. You are better off searching the web for information.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've finally found something that I can run with!
This book is a complete guide that shaped my perspective in dealing with exchange at work. This is all of the real world, day to day "what you need to know and do" information that so many books lack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Its all there
Great book. You made it simple to read complex information.
4-0 out of 5 stars Empowering Tidbits, Somewhat Incomplete
This book is stock full of potent tidbits that are darn hard to find anywhere; I know because I was scavenging the net, MS articles, several books, etc. for eons and I couldn't find any adequate material that can help me secure Exchange 2k3.Thus far, thanks to this book, I was able encrypt IMAP, POP, and OWA (Outlook Web Access) traffic.I am still working on the RPC over HTTP bit, but definitely a lot further along in the process thanks to this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very precise and informative
Well-written book which covers the important security aspects of the Exchange 2003 product. The book covers a wide area of security topics and is a "must have" if you're starting to look into Exchange & OWA security in general.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad...
I was disappointed that there seemed to be a lot of inaccuracies and incorrect information.Someone in a newsgroup explained to me that many of the statements in this book are incorrect because it was based on Exchange 2000 Beta 3 software and not the final version. The book should state that on the cover, rather than having the reader have to research a topic to verify that it is correct. That is why I bought the book in the first place. This is another disappointing release from Microsoft Press. Is it too much to ask for reasonable accuracy in a technical book?Is it too much to ask that a publisher let people know when a book was written using beta software?I don't think so. 4-0 out of 5 stars A great primer on Exchagne 2000 Administration
As a primer on Exchange 2000 administration, this book stands up remarkably well.Although some topics (such as disaster recovery) lack the necessary depth, the coverage is generally thourough and intelligent, striking the right balance between concepts, how-to's, and gotcha's.Subject exposition is extremely lucid and precise, permitting easy access to its rather broad range of topics while providing the proper foundation for further study.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very good
This book does not cover many topics. For example there is a whole section on co-existing with Exg 5.5 but no where in the book does it tell you how to remove your dependence on exchange 5.5. Also does not cover the installtion of EXG2000 in the Backoffice 2000 package. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cornucopia of Useless Information
I don't know how Scott Scholl did it but I've had this book on my reference shelf for about three months now and have looked in it when I needed to do something to administer Exchange Server 2003 probably 15 times.I am zero for a lifetime at ever finding anything of practical use.I am just amazed at how little useful information (for me, I admit) I can find in it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too little for too much
Disappointing book. A sort of technical gossip about Exchange. Here and there can find some useful hints, but it lacks the basic information about how Exchange 2003 works, how messages are flowing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a good read!
I typically don't post reviews, but I really felt I should post one for this book.I am in complete agreement with the folks who reviewed this before me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Showing its age, but some good stuff
I guess it is hard to produce a book at the start of a product's development cycle, so anything written in 2000 has to be looked at with some skeptism in 2003 as so much has changed between now and then. However, while the technology has moved on, the advice here is pretty solid. It just needs to be updated with everything that has happened since 2000 (like the Exchange service packs). I assume that the publisher will employ a new copy editor to pick up the typos, but there does seem to be a second edition around because I couldn't find some of the problems reported in other reviews in my copy. It'll be interesting to see what Redmond makes of Exchange 2003 when it hits the streets.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed with this poor offering
Tony Redmond seems to have written this book without using this product in anger. There is very little here that you wouldn't have figured out after an hour with a lab setup. I'm also dissapointed to see that he is still trotting out the same old generic advice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad But Falls Short
Hefty at over 1,000 pages and more text than graphics, it can be boring. Cisco texts have more graphics and useful ones at that. However, it does cover a number of topics, but can be found in other books as well. Worst of all, it doesn't include any CD-ROM with an electronic version or handy utilities that other books offer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little too long, but still good
I would prefer 250-300 pages, could have left out some stuff. I still liked it better than other titles I've gotten and give it 4-stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop advetising , we need real comments
Same day - 3 reviews, it looks suspicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am an MCSE in NT4 now and like this book...
I am an MCSE in NT4 now and am working on the 2000 upgrades. I was having problems with the test, so I got this book. I've beenworking with Exchange for a while, but the exam was so tricky. Thisbook really pointed out the details. I'm taking it again soon. ... Read more
