Solid publication for DSS & IT Theory--Great research tool!
Not everyone will find this book as extremely useful as I did. The information contained within can be intimidating because of the sheer volume packed into its over 900 pages, but for someone wanting a foundation of Decision-support theory, this book should fulfill your need.
Rambling book
This book could get away with about 2/3 the volume of content still be interesting.There really does not seem to be any structure to the way a chapter flows.Its easy to skim, but difficult to read.
Purpose of the book: separate you from your money???
As far as I can tell the prupose of this book is to separate you from a great deal of your money!

Fresh perspective, creative explanations
I keep reading these sorts of books hoping that someday I'll actually arrive at some reasonable conception of relativity, the quantum world, and cosmology generally. I can't claim that I'm there just yet, but I'm confident I'm a step or two closer thanks to Seife.

how to reason about knowledge
Brachman and Levesque describe what may be considered the foundations of artificial intelligence. They look at how to represent knowledge. As far more than just a passive collection of facts. The "Reasoning" in the book's title is the important aspect of that representation. You can understand how to apply reasoning in a logical and systematic manner.
Don't have to be a math buff to understand
I came across this book looking for a text that would explain the context of First Order Logic, why it is used for so many knowledge representation problems, how it is used to solve them, and its limitations.I must say that this is far and away the best book I've found to answer these questions.If you search around a little at the competition, you will find much of the text quickly turning to mathematical proofs and deductions in their explanations.While this is of course necessary and helpful, it doesn't (for me) really give an idea of how and why these methods are used practically.You can tell that these authors spent some time on ensuring consistency and fluency of the writing, which I find so very helpful.
This book is an Eye-Opener!
I love this book- It is a comprehensive introduction into knowledge representation, with enough detail to create your own knowledge representation programs.

how to automatically extract an ontology?
The book shows progress in how ontologies are defined from various data sets. The subject is a natural field of artificial intelligence, in attempting to automated this filling of an ontology. Various example ontologies are presented, along with the markup languages like RDF and OWL in which these are expressed. The progress is visible, inasmuch as just a few years ago, these languages were devised. Now we see non-trivial ontology constructions using them. Good.
Excellent survey book on Ontology
The book is well organized in introducing the subject in a coherent manner and weaving in all important criteria of ontology together. I especially like to read the comparison of different languagees in light of knowlege represenation and knowlege reasoing.The book is great in terms of getting a broad view (survey) and is also great as a reference.In many pages, there is so much information packed in each sentences.Great book.

A good literature review of current developments
The word `ontology' is usually associated with philosophical speculation on the reality of things, and if one checks the literature on philosophy one will find a diverse number of opinions on this reality. Engineers and scientists typically view philosophical musings on any topic as being impractical, and indulging oneself in these musings will cause one to lose sight of the topic or problem at hand. Rather than simplify the problem and make it understandable, philosophy tends in most cases to complicate it by endless debate on definitions and the use of sophisticated rhetoric that seems to have no bearing on the problem at hand. The conceptual spaces generated by these debates can become gigantic and therefore unwieldy, thus making the problem appear more complex than it actually is.

Expert Systems: Principles and Programming, Fourth Edition
An excellent text for a first course in Expert systems.

Worth every penny
This book gives a reasonable, detailed and seriuous account on expert system. A detailed presentation of the CLIPS expert-system language, along with the interpreter, is provided. Great book! Gives an overview of CLIPS main features.
The authors give a good cursory background on knowledge representation within AI.Chapters 7 - 12, present CLIPS syntax and usage.The information in these chapters helped me to develop a simulation involvingfour intelligent agents, colloborating via a blackboard.The book providesno details with respect to CLIPS object-oriented capabilities (COOL), butthis is something that can be learned through CLIP's accompanyingdocumentation.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know moreabout expert systems or CLIPS. ... Superficial and unclear
Trying to gather the greatest audience possible, this book is superficial, completly unclear and boring. Why? Topics are quickly introduced, concepts are rarely analized deeply, it's more discorsive than formal. With so many subjects of AI in the same book not enough space can be given to all of them, so most of the chapters are lists of important algorithms or concepts, barely explained. Do you want to verify it? See the table of contents andthe number of pages, and try to see how much space can be given toevery point... not enough.

Fantastic Introduction to AI
This book really stands out among the AI texts (I've read 4 others). First, the language is clear and simple enough for undergrads to grasp. Second, there are consistent examples that pervade the text to help the reader apply each method to an established problem. Third, the explanations of algorithms/structures are crafted and phrased to TEACH, not merely to summarize a bunch of material for reference purposes. Finally, the programming chapters allow the student to realize the material, and really think about the problems by implementing them and hashing out the details.
this book not cover much
I bought this book for my introduction course in AI. I feel that this book has lack of somethings which are very important, neural networks, and Ai and robotics to name a few. I found that the text is very hard to understand. Again he didn't use enough example to explain some of the topics. I am lost reading this book. The book is not well structured and turned me bored after 30 minutes reading it. The reason are, AI term definations are not included as other book do, few visual diagrams, objective is not well defined. Once again, he didn't include introduction/review of what we acpect to learn of each of every chapters. Reading it is like reading a "white bible". Only plain text and unprofessional layout. This book discorage me reading it. I think i should buy other book that have a wider coverage topics in AI and yet easy to understand, consistent with my AI course syllibus and yet easy for my eyes. ... Read more

Great Resource For The Seriously Interested
This book is written, chapter by chapter, by many of the most important researchers in this field- Since it is an advanced text, the content is a bit uneven and varied in writing style- It is essentially a compendium of review articles by experienced researches covering the various facets of the DL community. The choppy design is a small tradeoff for being able to get some very up-to-date information on Description Logics.

Very exciting new approach to integration
This book was very solid technically, and a fascinating read. On the development side, it is filled with ideas and examples, some of which showed me completely different approaches to common problems. Conceptually, the book is even richer, not only explaining complex technologies in simple ways, but showing how some seemingly unrelated technological developments from the past few years can fit and work together. Overall, I think the book's most worthwhile aspect is the way it married its overall vision, which anticipates the future of integration and knowledge-driven computing, with very specific design and code examples that I could incorporate into my practice right away. Brooks Collection -- History and then?
This book is a collection of the "best" / most cited Brooks papers. Basically it covers what is considered the core of papers that got behaviour based robotics rolling. Almost all papers have appeared as journal papers earlier and this is merely a convenient collection of these. Good thought-provoking material
While the title is a bit misleading (this is not a history per se, so much as a collection of papers of historical interest), this book contains a wealth of good material for those researching behavior-based robotics. As the book is a collection of Brooks' papers on the subject, it gives good insights into his approach -- although it does include a significant amount of redundant text (as you'd expect, many of the papers share "boilerplate" treatments of some subject matter). Interesting Perspective

An Advanced Neural networks Book
Bart's is legendary known for his contribution to Neural networks and Fuzzy logic. This book though very good, is an advanced level book preferably for a graduate student. Thorough knowledge of Signal analysis and probability would be needed for most part of the book. Advantages of the book is it is, if not the deepest book, on Neural networks and Fuzzy logic, it will surely count as one of the most finest book dealing in the subjects.

This book develops both the theories from the basics. It wonderfully describes the various theories and architectures logically developing the ideas. It has a practical approach and a generalised view without any sortof bias on computer programming alone. Professor Kosko also mathematicallydescribes the underlying mechanism of both neural and fuzzy system. Theinterdisciplinary examples from various fields show how machineintelligence can be used as proper alternative approaches effectively.I recomend every Electrical and computer engg. to read the bookeventhough he/she does not work in the area of m/c intelligence. A must forpeople in M/C intelligence.

Strong coverage of the relationship between fuzzy & neural
Kosko has two books, with similar titles published in 1991 and 1992(some copies) which together relate fuzzy and neural reasoning on both a mathematical/theoretical plane and the other on a practical plane.How to use neural networks to build fuzzy sets is one of many useful tools that can speed development of a fuzzy project.Also fuzzy rules can be derived using Kosko's methods with a neural net.If you can, acquire both.If neural practice or fuzzy practice is your goal this is the book to use. A methodology good at the micro-level biz process reuse
The book provides a object-oriented methodology variation utilizing the project management concepts. The method per se is not new, but the application steps and implications involved provide framework and model to start a knowledge system development in organizations. But the terms in the book sometimes causes confusion.
