5-0 out of 5 stars Great For ASP.NET and its XML Features
This is an excellent book covering the XML features of ASP.NET. It is very professional but, not for any beginner. It has the first 2 chapters which pretty much cover the basics but, throughout the rest of the book you need to know what you are doing. It is very detailed but is not really "step-by-step" like 1-2-3...It will walk you through how to do something through reading; so if your not one of those people who don't like to read, I wouldnt fully recommend this book to you. It shows a many screenshots in there so it makes it fairly simple to follow along. The book has almost 500 pages that are completely dedicated to the XML features of ASP.NET. If you are willing to take out the reading glasses and read a little bit. Overall, its an outstanding book!
4-0 out of 5 stars ASP.NET 2.0 XML explained
This book was very useful. It covered a wide variety of topics and explained most topics very well.I would have liked the book to get into some more subjects a little more in depth, but when you are covering so many topics that is a little difficult to do.This book did cover a lot of the new XML classes in the 2.0 framework.I would have liked some more info on the sql server 2005 xml stuff, particulary xquery. The book talked about OPENXML and even made the statement that you should use .nodes for these types of queries now.But it made no mention of how to do so.Overall, this was a very useful text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to understand xml 2.0 features
I would recommend this book to anyone working on ASP.NET 2.0. XML is the integral part of .NET framework and used widely on all projects.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
As the suffix title suggests, this book _does_not_rush_ things; very obviously catered for novice developers, it slowly oozes out information a step at a time. The authors exhibit their virtuous patience by going into great lengths to introduce the technology concepts that support XML web services, complete with comprehensive diagrams. These base explanations facilitate a firmer foundational understanding that no developer of XML web services should do without.
5-0 out of 5 stars I give this book an A+
I found it to be a very good intro for beginners in XML Web Services like myself.Highly recomended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial for beginners.
I am half way through the book and I like it. It is a good tutorial that will hold your hand and help you taking your first steps on the planet WebServices. The authors selected an interesting and practical example subject, validating credit card numbers, so you will not need a lot of coffee to keep you awake.

5-0 out of 5 stars For both beginners and experts
I've taught HTML and e-commerce at the university level for about a decade now. This book is the best I have found.I use it as my personal reference.I require it for my classes.
3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
This book is ok.I had to get it for a class. The writing is alittle hard to follow, but it is a good reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I purchased this book to use in a class I was taking.I had no prior knowledge of HTML, but this book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to designing web pages.I found the chapters very easy to follow and the exercises were kind of fun as you got to practice what you just read about.I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn HTML. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Great
As programming books this one did actually have something I could use and gave an example of how to use it.It even gave the code.......what a thought. Most programming books offer little more than lots of pages of "stuff" you cannot use.The book took you through the process of how to code a "Message" box. This one actually did have a few things one could use.Not a good beginner book, intermediate to advanced. This book coded you through modules.....good idea. The one thing I didn't like about the book was it did not go deep enough into data base design or normalization.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool book

3-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly what I expected...
I was actually hoping that it would be the perfect companion to the 'PHP for Flash' & 'Advanced PHP for Flash' series but it's more on the intergration between XML/Flash/MSOffice which in the web-designing industry is kinda/sorta useless since seeing that most of the technology used is PHP/ASP and MySQL.
5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to use XML structured data in Flash projects
This clearly written and well-organized book provides an overview of XML and how to use XML structured data in a variety of Flash projects. Anyone who is interested in working with XML in Flash and would like to learn more about how to get started will benefit from the easy-to-follow examples and the range of topics that the author has chosen to cover. Beginning with an overview of XML the chapters quickly move on to show how Flash can use XML data. The content is addressed to both Flash designers and developers. While Flash developers may already be familiar with the uses and specifications for XML schemas, Xpath, and XSLT; many Flash designers will gain an appreciation for many of the complexities of XML, as well as insight into the Web Services model.Later chapters, for example, reveal how to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Access to create XML content.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really nice book
How to use the XML in the Flash? This is one of the doubts most recurrent in lists and forums of quarrels. Who already tried work in Flash with XML created in one of programs of the Office Package definitively already lost the patience, much calm is necessary to reach the accurate node of the correct skill.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for XML Editing
I have found "Developing XML Web Services and Server Components with Microsoft VB.NET" an invaluable tool in XML editor development. It is quite detailed about accessing and manipulating XML data.

1-0 out of 5 stars More confusing
I was reading it as first book for most of the topics, It was total waste of time to read it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written
Judging by the positive reviews, this book must have some merit but it is certainly not in the quality of its writing or its accuracy.Perhaps the editor was reassigned to Longhorn duties. Here are some examples of what you can expect in the first two chapters:

5-0 out of 5 stars A book worth owning
The author covers some background, but mainly sticks to the business end of dealing with XML using java. The book is set out so you can read the parts that are relevant to getting a particular piece of technology working quickly.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good but could be more.
Second editions are always great. However, I find that I dont like all of the API reference in the book. I would rather look at APIs electronically and talk concepts in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, a little diffuse
Compared with .NET and XML this book tends to wander and rat hole a little. The book covers the basics. The SAX and DOM approaches. It also covers XSLT and serving XML. It also covers advanced topics like Castor, JDOM, and web services. But most of the subjects are covered at a cursory level and do not serve as a complete introduction.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hardly a Java book!
A careful reader would have noticed the "using" keyword in the code sample, and realized that this is C#, not Java. I found this book a good supplement to the MSDN; its well-conceived examples got me off to a good start in this area.

1-0 out of 5 stars aaaarrrrggggg Who wants java examples in a .net book
i was looking for example on using the System.xml.serialize name space. This is the example copied from the book
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
Note that I decided to write this review because I could not believe that so many people wrote so nice reviews about this book.My assumption is that someone or some people are really trying to sell this book, because this book is definitely not that good whatsoever.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the apprentice, not the beginner
This books, in my opinion, is definitely not for the newcomer. If you've never done web design, this book is going to be overwhelming for you. It touches on a lot of topics.
5-0 out of 5 stars Want to, or already, build sites; buy this book
Reference book, not really. It has a short reference for most used items in the back, but the book is more for putting things together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for newbies and folks upgrading skills
This is a very well thought out book. The chapters and examples start very basic and build and build into some fairly impressive pieces.Javascript and PHP is used in limited fashion. Most examples are exclusively XHTML and CSS.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Web services book for a J2EE person
his book is primarily geared towards reader familiar withthe J2EE architecture. Code samples are few and far between, and the illustrations are primarily UML. That's cool. For a book from Sun J2EE team, I would like to see a little more code examples (thus the four stars instead of five.)
3-0 out of 5 stars Developers are also in a certain way architects, so read it
As the title of my review says this book is intended for all the people who want to architect and develop web services in a proper way. The technology around Web Services is very splitted. I mean from a lot of separate web associations. When you want to master web services technology you have to know in detail XML, XML Schema, SOAP, UDDI and its support in J2EE.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the right reader.
This book provides a very good, well ordered, high-level overview of architectural decisions in a Web Services application. If you have knowledge of J2EE technologies, and want an intro to the Web Services paradigm, this is a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written and well-presented
Beverly Voth has written the "bible" on FileMaker Pro/XML integration. She takes what can be a daunting subject, and leads you logically from topic to topic, with demo files and plenty of code examples to illustrate her points. From the eight-page table of contents (in outline form) to the detailed index, this book is exceptionally well laid out, and has plenty to offer both the novice and the veteran FileMaker developer. This book does not suffer from the "we didn't have time, budget or inclination to proofread adequately" syndrome that plagues so many computer books these days... it flows beautifully, and I have yet to find a single typo.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Last Word
The release of Beverly Voth's Guide is well worth our wait. While exhaustive, the writing is clear and not exhausting. She has given us the definitive textbook on this thorny, difficult subject, starting at the outside and working in. While breaking apart the various layers into edible morsels, Ms. Voth does not sugar-coat the complexities of her subject; she simply makes them disappear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filemaker Pro 6 Developer's Guide to Xml/Xsl
I've read many books regarding FileMaker Pro. In the few that mention XML, it is an afterthought. Beverly Voth's book is in depth, detailed and formatted in a manner that makes it readable, understandable and usable to both novice and professional developers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Effectively Use XML
Elliotte Rusty Harold states in the introduction of Effective XML that the book is neither an introductory book nor an XML tutorial. Rather, it is a distillation of the author's experience using and teaching XML and how to use it effectively. The book does a great job of explaining how to use XML and its related technologies.
5-0 out of 5 stars I wish the XML Schema working group had a copy per member
This is not a book explaining XML. This is not a book that goes into any depth on XML APIs. It is not a book explaining any one XML format like XSLT, RSS, or XSD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great gap between book knowledge and effective use...
The flexibility of XML can often mean that there's a gap between using XML and using XML effectively.Elliotte Rusty Harold's book Effective XML - 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your XML (Addison Wesley) is an excellent way to move towards the latter condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!
This book is not worth your money. It is poorly written, does not explain code, and is very incomplete.Bible in its title is very misleading...

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Textbook for Beginners
I have used this book as a textbook for an "Introduction to HTML" class I taught.I looked at several references prior to choosing on one, and this was by far the best formatted and most appropriate for those with little to no existing knowledge of HTML.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
The title is misguiding. It's everything but an HTML, XHTML & CSS Bible. Title should read "Become a webmaster in a month". I expected to have: - The full HTML Specification with an example for each definition - Same for XHTML (DTD, rules to respect, validation, etc...) - Same for CSS and *PLEASE*, at least the basics of tableless CSS layout If the book were to expose the aforementioned information, it would exceed the 800 pages, and the author wouldn't have had to put some more information that is useful, I agree, but it's off-topic, sorry. The author should stress a lot more on standards. Standards are important, and one can't call a book a "Bible" if it only covers 75% of HTML, 50% of XHTML and hardly covers basics of CSS. It lacks information on the PNG file format (open source). Mention of the Opera Browser is almost non-existent, even if it's the most standard-compliant browser. Using tables to create a layout is old-fashioned and many good books (by Dan Cederholm, Jeffrey Zeldman or Eric Meyer) proove that one should *NOT* use tables for layout so that structure and content are clearly seperated from presentation. Without this discipline, the web won't be able to evolve toward XML. The book talks about image retouching, which again is off-topic, pretty much like SMIL, multimedia, FTP, maintainance, databases, weblogs, PHP & MySQL. I noticed several errors, and then I stopped writing them down. These are some of them: - p.93 PNG, is stored without being compressed doesn't loose color or image quality, and does support transparency. At least this can be achieved in Photoshop CS. - p.108 I find it sad that the author doesn't show how image maps are done with circles and polygons - chap.9 "Special characters" should show a sample for every single entity - p.184 The author puts the e-mail address into the code. How is it possible?! With all the spam problems people keep complaining, how come the author doesn't display the e-mail address thanks to a javascript to hide it from spambots? - p.188 in Part III instead of in Part II - p.210 He forgot that the label tag can nest the radio button and the text without ID. - p.284 div.div1 table should read div.div1>table - All examples are shown in IE or Netscape 4. Why not show modern browsers (Opera 7.8, Mozilla 1.8, Firefox 1.0) - p.379 user agent is not Opera but Firebird This is not a bad book, it has a lot of useful information, but what drove me nuts is that I wanted a "Bible" for these 3 languages. I had to buy other books. I hope now people who buy this book know it's a general-purpose book on web design. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much verbage, takes forever to get to the point
If you need to learn XQuery or XPath fast, this is not the book, or you need to skip the first 8 chapters.XQuery and XPath are hardly even mentioned until Chapter 9.The first 8 chapters discuss everything except what is in the title.XML is a pretty boring topic, and excess verbage doesn't help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A balanced view of XQuery with several excellent use-cases
The authors are XQuery standardization committee members with long tenures at Oracle, thus possessing an unique grounding in that 'other' query language, SQL. As a result, the book is balanced with respect to what SQL/XML and XQuery can respectively do. A number of examples are provided, to illustrate where XQuery is useful and where other query mechanisms might work.

3-0 out of 5 stars DTD, but little Schema
My only complaint with this book is that it emphasizes DTD over Schema a bit too much. For this and other reasons, I felt the treatment of XML seemed a little dated, and also a bit shallow. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Used in a course
I have taught a course using this text for a number of semesters. It is by far the best XML text I have found. The tutorial examples Patrick Carey includes in all his books are well thought out and demonstrate the best use of the technology he presents. I personally do not use the copy of XML Spy included with the text - I prefer other editors - but it is handy to have this trial version for someone who doesn't want to find an editor on their own. ...
