Accept no substitutes -- THE book to read on file systems
I decided to read and review three digital forensics books in order to gauge their strengths and weaknesses: "File System Forensic Analysis" (FSFA) by Brian Carrier, "Windows Forensics" (WF) by Chad Steel, and "EnCase Computer Forensics" (ECF) by Steve Bunting and William Wei.All three books contain the word "forensics" in the title, but they are very different.If you want authoritative and deeply technical guidance on understanding file systems, read FSFA.If you want to focus on understanding Windows from an investigator's standpoint, read WA.If you want to know more about EnCase (and are willing to tolerate or ignore information about forensics itself), read ECF.
The best work on the topic
Carrier's book has prooven invaluable to this digital forensics trainee, and I expect many of the old hands in the field will be keeping it on hand as well.If you're serious about computer forensics, you need a copy.

Very deep
I'm pretty technical, so I enjoyed this book.The author has more on file systems than just about anywhere, and I found it helpful in non security work also just to understand how the different systems work.

Great Book!! Great for Fundamentals
Storage Networking Fundamentals: An Introduction to Storage Devices, Subsystems, Applications, Management, and File Systems
Misleading book title
This is a good storage book overall but... released under wrong title. If you erase "networking" part out of the title, it will be exactly what the book is about. Author himself emphasize the book is not really about "connecting function". He also introduces some new terms and even though these are quite acceptable for the discussion matter those terms barely might be seen somewhere else.

Excellent at the Fundamentals
This book was not what I expected...I pre-ordered it as soon as I saw that Cisco Press had a new storage book coming out, and I expected that at least some of its content would cover Cisco's storage products (the MDS line in particular).I got the book the week it came out, looked at the TOC and was immediately disappointed.That's the bad news.The good news is that I read the book anyway and was very pleasantly suprised.This is an awesome book about "storage networking fundamentals".Had my expectations been in line with the very clear title, I wouldn't have been disappointed.The title is not misleading, I just assumed that it would have MDS content.

Writing kernel-mode Windows NT programs--such as file-system drivers (FSDs), filter drivers, and antivirus programs--poses a challenge to even experienced Windows programmers. It's hard enough to get these programs to work, but getting them to live peacefully with other kernel programs and NT itself is an art. Nagar sorts through the mechanics of writing such programs in this book, which is no mean feat considering that Microsoft provides no documentation for its development kit. Very unique but has to be read with other recent materials.
This book is by far, one of my most favorite books. It has been the only complete text book that explains the details of the Windows NT File Systems Framework. If you are to buy the book these days you would not feel the value of the book as I felt it when I started reading it six years ago. Nowadays, there are some other literatures that provides deeper coverage for certain topics like the OSR materials and the first IFS conference (both are available as part of the IFS kit). But still, the book remains the only complete reference. To get most of the benefits of this book, it is better that you look at the FASTFAT source code that comes with the IFS kit. The main drawback of the book is the lack of deep coverage for network based file system drivers. OSR materials provided with the IFS kit are essential to have better knowledge about File System FILTER drivers. Read the book while watching the videos of the first IFS kit conference, this will help a lot. Finally, if you are new to file system drivers then, be more patient while reading the book. You would not get everything from the first reading.

Great info, but much repeating
This is certainy a must have for any Windows 32-bit file system developer. It reveals great secrets, make sense of the NT IFS chaos, and make Your IFS nightmares go away. Monopoly
The information is helpful and appears to be complete.The empirical knowledge implied by frequent contrasts between the specifications and what happens "on the wire" is impressive. Excellent technical reference
I really like this book. The internals of the CIFS protocol is not a subject for the faint hearted, but Chris has really tackled it well. This is just the right book for people like me who want to understand what is going on on their network at the bits and bytes level. In-depth discussion of CIFS implementation.
If want to know CIFS/SAMBA/NetBIOS internals, this is the book to read. It goes into detail of CIFS implementation. You will find discussion on structures, functions, and architecture of CIFS. This is a very good book for programmers who are working in this area. Although the book is useful for general users of CIFS but the real audience are the programmers and people who want to go into in-depth knowledge of CIFS implementation. Unix from the bottom up
I have completed reviewing this publication and the only regret is it will not fit in my back pocket. This book is a real nuts & bolts to Tru64 problems/solutions that are not contained in other material. I have always wished for a referance to solve a problem that removed the guessing or waiting for a support resource to call back. This provides REAL problems and REAL solutions. Steve has provided an excellent handbook for those who do everyday admin. The AdvFS and LSM chapters are the best I have seen. I recommend this book to every one who had a chance to work with Tru64.

A must for Tru64 Admins
This book not only covers the basics, but hits on some of the undocumented (until now) utilities of Compaq's Tru64 UNIX.Some of the information in the book is only obtainable by purchasing Compaq's superb, but expensive, support.I waited a year for this book, and it was well worth it!If you maintain systems that must be on-line 24 X 7 X 365, then you need this book. ... Great book
Not sure why its out of print. It's an excellent in-depth look at NTFS for us Administrators and Users. Just the right size and well written. Good technical summary of NTFS
This book is a good technical summary of Microsofts NTFS, but it lacks the technical depth necessary to really document NTFS. If you want to know how how NTFS works, this book is for you. If you want the detail necessary to write an implementation of NTFS, sorry, you're out of luck ... Read more

dissappointed
i bought this book hoping that it would delve in to the code of the different filesystems. instead it breifly goes over how to use the filesystems and some of they main features, little more than a generic write up. this book, might be useful to someone who has money to waste and doesn't really know that much about filesystems but to few others.

Good book for hackers
I bought this book expecting to get a step-by-step description of what is a file system and how Linux implements them. I ended up liking this book because it describes the most important file systems in Linux and how they are structured. After reading this book you sit down and modify an existing file system for your own particular needs or write your own file system from scratch. If you are a serious Linux hackers, this book is worth its money.

Only useful if writing one...
This book had a lot of interesting information about how the internals of Linux file systems, but was pretty useless in explaining how to actually use them for anything. It was also really hard to read and had a lot of stuff that you could find anywhere on the web. If you want to write a filesystem this book might be useful. If you just want information or actually want to use an advanced Linux file system, get William Von Hagen's "Linux Filesystems." ... Read more

Very thorough, excellent style
If you are an afs sysadmin you can't afford notto have this incredible book. I'm surprised there are no other rave reviews here.Richard Campbell has done a tremendous job showing the reader what is going on under thehood of an afs system. He also mentions various little titbits you won'tfind anywhere in Transarc's documentation or webstite. The chapter ondebuggin various problems will give you an procedural methodology on how totackle certain problems.There is an enormous amount of info in this book. It's also worth mentioning that the publisher has done a wonderfull job ondesign and typesetting; very clean like one would expect from a serioustechnical book.Anyway what r u waiting for ?; click and buy, this is yournew best friend ;) ... As other reviewers have pointed out, the author starts off byapologetically lamenting that he didn't have much time to go into verydetailed analysis on other file systems.The author seems veryknowledgeable in general, and it's a shame he didn't have more time to addsome more breadth to the book. Some of my all-time favorite books arePatterson and Hennessey's two computer architecture books, because they arevery dense with a wide range of well-explained ideas.This book is muchless dense.
