4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners and transfers
Despite some of the negative comments on this book, I bought it anyway. The remarks that this is not a reference manual is unjust. Chapman never claims that the book is supposed to be a reference manual, so don't expect one. The book is written for those who begin to learn Fortran 95 or want to upgrade their skills to make the transition from Fortran 77.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for modern programming
It is outrightly silly to rate this excellent book one star and insinuate that it is a terrible write-up. Is it the thin index that makes it so bad, or the explanation of do loops using sin(x) series expansion, according to the first reviewer? If you are a scientist or an engineer (the target audience of the book) you'll probably see the wisdom of such an example instead of counting from 1 to 10 as if we are inside a grocery store.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible as a reference.
This is probably one of the worst programming books I have ever used. The index is terrible, which turns finding any random info into a page by page scavenger hunt. There are very few tables which give nice breakdown of parameters and what not, as the author prefered to scatter information about a single function call through two or three chapters. The "scientific and engineering" aspect of programming is so spoon fed it really does nothing to enhance understanding of the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Proprietary source the Achilles' heel for non-students
I first bought this text in 1994 while doing scientific programming for graduate school work. A fellow graduate student had suggested I use an undocumented routine that (I later discovered) came from Numerical Recipes (NR). I was impressed enough with NR's presentation of ideas that I also bought the example book ISBN 0521437210 (which I've hardly cracked since) and a diskette of source code (which cost as much as the book but worth it). I was able to do a lot of basic research quickly with NR code, and I still occasionally use NR's routines.4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool for Programmers, Researchers, and Students
This book contains hundreds of "canned codes" in the FORTRAN language. The book provides several variations of many popular numerical techniques and provides the most stream line (comp. time) codes available. Most codes allow for optimization to be build in, such as an RK4 (4th Order Runge-Kutta) with variable steps sizes.Great if you don't want to write your own code for a subroutine, or it you just don't know the method well enough to write it yourself. The book also provides some basic explaination of the techniques and codes with is very helpful so that the code is less of a black box, although its not that detailed.5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensible, a classic in the field
This volume, and its companions for other programming languages, is an absolute classic. The authors strike the right balance between cookbook solutions and theory, so that most of us get just enough background to choose the right algorithm but not so much to get drowned in theory. This edition is the first devoted only to Fortran, but is the second edition published by the authors. It includes a number of additions and corrections, many of which appeared in Computers in Physics (now the journal Computing in Science and Engineering published jointly by the IEEE and the APS). My only criticism is, where were these books twenty years ago when I needed them? I would recommend these books to anyone involved in the application of numerical methods. They are tremendous time savers.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete language reference, but not for rookies
This book covers the complete FORTRAN 95 language definition. The author apparentely intended it as clarifification of the ISO/J3 standard. And that's just what it is. This book even reproduces the complete official F95 grammar in one of its appendices. It has a more-than-complete index, which helps you find what you're looking for most of the time. Don't expect examples in this book; there aren't any.3-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but needed information hard to find
I am an experienced user of Fortran 77, who is returning to Fortran after several years absence.I qualified as language lawyer for Fortran 77 and could quote chapter and verse of the standard.5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough reference to Fortran 95.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable printing.
I am returning this item because the printing is unacceptably poor. The book is softbound and yet the pages appear to be photocopies, and not good ones. The syntax definitions (the most important part, for me), are in gray-on-gray box text that, in this printing, is almost unreadable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to FORTRAN
This book does not assume any prior knowledge and provides a good intro to Fortran programming (also provides a short intro to programming in general). Goes over the essential elements needed to get started with Fortran and provides many examples. In fact, most of the concepts are demonstrated using actual coding examples. One drawback is that the index in this book is not extensive, so it does not serve quite as well as a reference. However, it still does a decent job in this department. After reading through this book I felt well-prepared to begin programming in Fortran. A nice complement to getting this book is to download one of the freely available Fortran documentation manuals (e.g. from Intel) to serve as a reference guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars slow moving field with lots of legacy code
No previous coding experience in Fortran is assumed by the authors. Actually, no previous programming in any language. Fortran is quite easy to learn, compared to others like C++ or Java or C#. The book explains the differences between the 4 major recent versions of Fortran. Though some of you might quibble as to why the book even talks about Fortran 77. That originated in 1977!

4-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT book for beginners!
This book is a fairly easy and simple introduction to Fortran 90. It is well directed towards the beginner and the beginner will most definitely profit from buying this book. The example codes are well chosen and theexercises provide ample practice in learning the basics of the language. The book covers much of the Fortran 90 syntax and the language reference inthe appendix is handy. Presentation wise it is well constructed with abi-colour approach which is good and makes the concepts easy to grasp, especially for a textbook, as compared to a one colour layout like a bookwith black print all over. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars WHAT A CRUMMY BOOK!!
You'll be confused by page 15.The author makes no attempt to teach windows programming for Fortran in a way anyone can understand. He seems to be highly impressed with his own sophisticated knowledge and wants all of us to know how smart he is.Unfortunately that doesn't do any good for us Fortran programmers who want to learn how to build Windows applications. The author will show us examples that combine dozens of different subject he (briefly) touched on in the text rather than an example that shows one or just a few concepts. It's confusing as hell.Unfortunately, this is probably the only book we'll ever get on building Fortran programs for Windows since so few people are interested in doing such a thing.Consequently the author will continue to make money of this miserable work.CAN ANY OF YOU OUT THERE WRITE A BETTER BOOK? PLEASE!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great investment
For those die-hard Fortran programmers with no prior Windows programming experience, such as myself, this book is the perfect accompaniment to the CVF on-line programmers' guide and answers many of the lingering questions you may have after working through the CVF sample code. The great thing about this book is that all the examples discussed have the code freely available from the publisher's website, so that you can work through the concepts step-by-step in the book and then examine the nitty-gritty from the downloaded resources. Along-side Metcalf and Reid's "Fortran 90/95 explained", Norman Lawrence's "Compaq Visual Fortran: A Guide to Creating Windows Applications" is definintely one of my most valuable reference texts. Get the most out of your Visual Fortran software and stick this book in a prominent position on your shelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, buy it.
Fortran is a very elegant mathematical developing language with periodical updates (Fortran 55, 66, 77, 88 but labeled 90/95, and now still waiting for ANSI 99 which will probably be labeled 2002). You don't need a whole library to grasp its possibilities and functions, while the mathematical and statistical libraries are incomparable. But in most manuals the use of Windows and graphics are underexposed, whereas many Fortran solutions for graphics and some for Windows exist to choose from.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction -- But Nothing More
"Introduction to FORTRAN 90" will get you on the road to programming in FORTRAN 90 post haste. The foundations of the langauge are covered thoroughly and clearly with plenty of good examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed
I needed a book to get up and running in my new job as a Fortran programmer. This was just the book to do that! My job is in the engineering field and the book not only covered code that pertained to engineering concepts, but it also covered the necessary code and syntax that I was likely to encounter in the custom-built program that I will be maintaining/enhancing. It was just the right amount of delivery without being too much--enough to get my skill set updated. I would buy it again. It was worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it advertises.
This book is quite appropriately named. It teaches the reader Fortran 90 in a clear, concise, and logical manner, exactly as an Engineer or Scientist would expect. This book goes a step beyond teaching Fortran bytrying to teach the reader good programming style, common algorithms, andlogic traps to avoid. Most all the examples relate in some way to problemscommonly solved by Engineers and Scientists, thus showing how using thelanguage can benifit and enhance the readers professional cababilities. However, this book does have its downfalls.A couple of the code exampleshave small errors in them, and certain topics are not covered as well asothers.Overall, I believe this is an excellent book that does a great jobof teaching the reader to program in Fortran 90. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars How to write and maintain large Fortran code
Fortran is still widely used in science and engineering, though if you look at new computer books, you can scarcely tell this. Since those usually discuss languages like C, C++ and Java. But when it comes to raw number crunching, and where a GUI might be nice, but is strictly secondary, there is a ton of legacy code in Fortran. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners
I have some 20 years experience in coding in Fortran 77, but finally needed to catch up with Fortran 95 and 2003. I have also bought "Fortran 90/95 for Scientists and Engineers" by Stephen Chapman and found that a much better book for beginners in Fortran 95. "Fortran 95/2003 Explained" reads, as other reviewers have noted, like a language reference. There is basically no build-up in this book and I also have the feeling that in earlier Chapters it is expected that you already know what comes in later Chapters. The examples in the book are rarely explanatory to me, they leave me often without a clear understanding of what purpose is served.
4-0 out of 5 stars Object Oriented Fortran!!
Amongst all the new computer books these days, it is rare to find one on Fortran. This text will have much familiar to programmers of earlier versions. The authors go on about Fortran 95 and its 2003 sibling. Yet it is still recognisably much like F77.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information, but Difficult to Read.
The review by V. Rau descibes the book very well. I am not sure that I can add much. There is a wealth of information. However, it reads like a specification for program language yet to be written. The information is all there but be prepared to figure out for yourself how to use the specifications that they list. Fortran is the language of choice for number crunching problems. I was at a loss most of the time to try to figure out how the newer specifications that they list could apply to the number crunching. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Program listings
Although the original FORTRAN77 version of Numerical Recipes is highly acclaimed (and rightfully so, it is really worth every buck) I do not recommend this FORTRAN90 book. I was very disappointed when I received it.A huge part of the book only contains F90 program listings for the sameroutines that are derived and discussed in detail in Volume I (F77). Thetwo new introductory chapters make it not worth buying the book. Instead, get the Numerical Recipes CD-ROM which includes the source code for C, F77,F90 and other languages and maybe a good introductory or reference book onF90.3-0 out of 5 stars Numerical recipes in f90 volume 2
This IS NOT a standalone book. It can be read ONLY with NR f77 (2. Ed. also titled Volume I). The discussions on the algorithms given there are not repeated here. The few new recipes (eg on random numbers using a lot off90) are explained in the excellent style one has come to expect of theauthors. However to make sense out of the book you must have both this andthe volume 1 open at the corresponding pages. This makes it inconvenient touse. For this reason it was something of a disappointment.5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but pages falling out, physically weak binding
This is one of the greatest advances in numerical analysis of the 20th Century, and a "can't do without" in the computer age. However, I bought a personal copy in 1991 and the quality of the binding was terrible as pages have kept falling out in the most frequently used sections. It's one of the books I'll take to my grave, if it doesn'tdie before I do. I think the publishers should be ashamed of themselves for not treating such a great classic with more respect. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A beginners guide to FORTRAN
I used a copy of a previous edition of this book when completing my undergraduate degree. When I had to do a fair bit of programming recently, and needed to brush up on FORTRAN, I purchased this book.4-0 out of 5 stars Good book if you still program in Forran
Inspite of OOPS and stuff, nothing beats Fortran in writing moderately complex programs without having to learn too many constructs. I routinelyhandle my data files in fortran rather than go all the way writing 'C'code. Reading/writing arrays with a single statement, good math functions, universal availability etc make fortran a very good scientific tool. (morelike an advanced calculator). I will rather write a small fortran programthan calculate something in my head. Some scientific packages use fortranas their base language, so a knowledge of fortran is not going to bewasted. And so math/science books use fortran, so you will definitelybenefit if you can understand the language. You could probably translateone of those into C/C++ and make some easy money.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best textbooks for Fortran 77
I have used this book in my programming class for many years and it has proven to be reliable and well written. It has a good number of exercises and even some numerical methods applications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lets crunch some numbers
A book that shows the whole field well. It goes beyond the tutorial books and has handy source code for some practical programs you should run. It also covers resources. I had my school library buy a copy after reading theauthors' post on Usenet about the book in comp.lang.fortran. But withcomputers at home who can access Fortran?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fortran is dead and this book can not revive it
On the verge of the 21st century, FORTRAN as a language is practically dead, since it does not offer modern programming facilities and features commonly found in newer languages. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Limited Usefulness
This book requires that the reader already knows about object-oriented programming. It gives little information on the subject.Instead, it gives details about how to use Fortran to implement those concepts. The details it gives will already be familiar to Fortran users, though not for that purpose.I was hoping for a book for the many scientists and engineers who have learned and used Fortran well, but who have not learned about object-oriented methods. This book isn't it.The only audience for which it is useful is the opposite: an experienced object-oriented programmer who wishes to switch from another language to Fortran.5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Breathes New Life Into Fortran
This is a great book for any Fortran programmer (new and old). The author does a fantastic job of introducing OOP for Fortran 90/95.I had no idea that all kinds of neat OO concepts could be implemented in Fortran.I almost want to go back and rewrite my big FEA code using these concepts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the beginning Fortran programmer
While this book doesn't include many of the newer additions to the Fortran language, it does cover all of the basics in enough detail that a beginning scientific or engineering programmer can easily write their own programs using it.However, the real value of this book is that it is written in a very simple and easy to follow (and sometimes even entertaining) style. It includes only the necessary details, but doesn't assume that the reader is familiar with any of the idiosyncracies of the Fortran language.Every topic includes a fundamental description of how the feature works, instructions and examples to demonstrate its use, as well as examples of how not to use it.The index is very thorough, making this a great reference book as well.
3-0 out of 5 stars how about newer versions of Fortran?
I am unsure how much new this book really offers over Fortran texts of the last decade. It goes over the standard syntax in an adequate fashion. But no better or worse than most such other texts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good explanations but too pedantic
This book explains very well the features of Fortran90 programming, but it is way too pedantic. I would have preferred a more concise, O'Reilly style of writing. Many examples of very simple code are provided to illustrate points - I found them to distract from the points being made. The book could also have benefited from a more Object Oriented focus as many of the new features of F90 over F77 are attempts to move Fortran in this direction.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent book for learning new features of fortran 90
Well written detailed coverage of Fotran 90. Clear explanations of obsolete F77 features and other features of the language to avoid using and why. I would recommend this text to anyone wishing to learn F90 from scratch or upgrading from F77. Good example programs, code fragment and many programming exercises with solutions. I am now enjoying the use of derived types and generic functions as well as extending the intrinsic functions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very carefully written textbook and reference.
This is one of the best books on Fortran 90 programming. Its major strength is that the information in the book is reliable and correct. It may especially be very useful for experienced FORTRAN 77 programmers. Ithink every Fortran programmer must have a copy of this text in his/herlibrary. ... Read more
