2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I took the exam today....and....passed.Phew!This is one VERY tough exam to study for.I spent about 200 hours preparing for this exam. The exam is very broad and very deep.I bought this book and used the Transcender.
4-0 out of 5 stars Acceptable Study Resource
I read this book twice. And I used the MS Press Training Kit Exam Prep application. I studied all 304 questions. I passed the test. So the study guide works. And this was the hardest exam I've taken (I've taken six).
3-0 out of 5 stars I passed and that is the most important thing
Well I just took the exam today and passed (I didn't do exceptionally well but I have the certificate!). My only source was this book. By me passing I guess you can say it did the job for the task at hand. About 11 out of 16 of the chapters in the book are very easy to understand and very helpful and straightforward (minus the typos). However, some of the others, particularly those dealing with diagnostic and management configuration could use some work. My biggest issue with the book is not with how it is written, but the content. There were about 5 questions which I had no clue about and do not remember their content being directly mentioned (if at all) in the book. I am not pointing fingers at anyone, but there is a problem there with either the book's content or the access the authors had of what would be covered on the exam. All in all, I give it a 3 out 5 since I did pass. Although, I did study this book everyday, heavily, for three straight weeks. As for the practice questions, I thought they were ok as well. They helped me learn some things not covered in the book (oddly enough)and were useful to point out important points on specific topics. This isn't the greatest book in the world, but if you know it really well and do al of the examples and labs, you will probably pass. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are You Ready for .NET 3.0 Yet?
Just as I was beginning to get a bit of a handle on .NET Version 2.0, along comes .NET 3.0 as part of the new Windows Vista operating system. To be sure, you can run it on XP with SP2 installed after you have installed .NET Framework 3.0. The book presumes that you have experience with .NET 2.0 and with C#. If you do not, the author recommends you read some of his earlier books.
5-0 out of 5 stars The long awaited Programming Windows, 6th Edition!
This book is the destined to be not only a classic but also the standard for WPF development. It's look and feel is reminiscent of his previous classic: Programming Windows. So much so, in fact, that you could call this his long awaited 6th edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive WPF Book
I have had this book for about 2 weeks now, as Amazon delivered it to me early before the official release.I am a tech book junkie.I buy a lot of tech books. This is the best programming text I have purchased in the last couple of years.Petzold does a great job explaining WPF from both a nuts & bolts prespective and a big picture perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and understandable - really learn MFC
I purchased this book a number of years ago when I started a new job which required me to program using MFC.I had never done any programming for Win32, let alone using MFC (which wraps around the Win32 API).Coming from this state of ignorance, it only took a short time of working with Prosise's book for me to gain enough confidence to start writing MFC programs on my own.
4-0 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful work BUT........
no practical programs. Both "Windows programming" of my boss,Charles Petzold and the book taking draw, game programs to demonstrate.
5-0 out of 5 stars who says it takes longer?
I managed to muddle my way through simple dialog-box based applications with hardly any documentation -- just advice from colleagues. When I got assigned to write a real live multi-threaded, multi-document app, I tried the books lying around the office which had helped me considerably with the simpler apps, but which left me much confused about things like device contexts. Why all of a sudden CClientDC instead of CPaintDC? And what is a DC anyway exactly? They say, "See, if you do this and this, then you can draw an ellipse that wiggles around." So I do that, and then try changing parameters, and am left only able to draw that ellipse. I can't make it purple.

5-0 out of 5 stars a work still in progress, but quite intriguing
WCF is a very promising new technology being put out by Microsoft. You should take note that it is still actively a work in progress. Made clear both by the text in the book and by postings from other reviewers and the authors. There is indeed a potential drawback, inasmuch as specific coding details may get obsoleted by an eventual stable production release. But before you are tempted to turn away, keep in mind that the very title cover of the book says "Beta Edition". The advantage is an early, informal look at WCF.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Initial Perspective on WCF
Gives a good MSFT perspective on WCF and the HOWTO get up & running with WCF.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well written book
This a very well written step by step guide to WCF. Though the book does not reflect the changes in June CTP, it presents the concepts in a nice, easy to understand manner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for Windows/MFC programming professionals
Not suitable for MFC begginers, but very good and informative book for professionals. It is writen in very good manner - it is easy to read and understand even complex topics4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for MFC.
This book is the best book for MFC and what it does inside. This is not anintroductory book and if you are new to MFC you'd be better served byreading Kruglinki's Programming Visual C++.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best MFC companion

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
As someone stated, you'll find info in here that no other book has. Also - what's up with that retard who gave the book 1 star because it wasn's shipped on time? Some people should just get a clue, and stay as away from technology altogether.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book
I own 6 MFC books, and out of all of them, Professional MFC with Visual Studio 6 is by far the most complete. When I wanted to look up a subject I was having trouble with, I used to have to flip through a few of my books before I found a decent section covering the topic, if I even did.Since I bought this book however, I just look in it and the rest of the books have been gathering dust on my floor.I'd highly recommend it.2-0 out of 5 stars Expert Advice, Well Hidden
There's no doubt that Blaszczak knows MFC. Expertise nonwithstanding, however, the book suffers and ultimately fails for two reasons: poor writing infused with distracting try-too-hard humor, and an index that's so far off in the weeds as to be utterly useless. If you feel you must purchase this book, try reading a few pages first; if the author doesn't annoy you within two pages, you may get along with him just fine.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good seller, definitely recommend
Shipping is prompt, and the item is in good condition as described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro Book!!! Best Programming book ever read
This is the best programming book that I read from page 1 to the last page. I hope Jones can write more books on MFC or Visual C#. Not only did I learn MFC concepts and programming skills, but also I found Chapter 1 and 2 are very useful because they are basic and fundamental to C++ that I sometimes forgot. I love the pace and layout of this book. User-defined messaging and modeless are explained in a very nice way. The Appendice are very useful too.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but not too shabby
MFC programming is a bear, especially in VC++ 6.0 (not .NET). This book does a decent job of introducing key concepts, and comes with a mountain of sample code on CD. If MFC/VC++ were my first programming language, I would look for a book geared more towards total complete novices; otherwise, it does the trick. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Simplified MFC Solution Reference
There are two MFC books real-world MFC programmers should keep as future references.VC++ MFC Extensions by Example by John Swanke is one of them. This is an essential MFC extension.Swanke presents powerful, yet surprisingly really simple fully implemented solutions to questions MFC programmers most often ask.For example, the author provides a solution to a folder selection dialog box.Swanke presents elegant solutions that are so simple, yet effective, they make Visual C++ Wizard seem overly complicated!5-0 out of 5 stars Most useful examples of any MFC book
The great thing about this book is it addresses so many situations that MFC programmers find themselves in, and it seems like you're always trying to reinvent the wheel to deal with them.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

5-0 out of 5 stars Best MFC Starter book out there
I bought this around 1999, long after I started programming in MFC.The one regret I had was not buying this book sooner.Just the format alone of this book is priceless. The question-answer format makes it very easy to find things and makes a great quick reference with good examples.I am writing this review almost 6 years later because this book still helped me out a lot even after years of writing MFC stuff. The great thing about the book is it covers a lot of MFC material and hits on things you may not use day to day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
Worth every penny and more!

3-0 out of 5 stars Some pretty good tricks
If you are looking for details about MFC this is NOT the book to buy. If you are looking for some "tricks" well then maybe this will work for you. The book is well enough written but lacks some detail about how the code works. But I am not an expert on MFC. If I could I would add 1/2 star to the 3 I gave. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Printing, fonts, DIBs, DCs, and more.
Most Visual C++/MFC books tend to put quantity over quality.I've read countless books on the subject that cover dozens of subjects, with little depth. This book is on the opposite side of the spectrum, providing a much-needed resource, and covering the topics in depth, at the same time.5-0 out of 5 stars MFC Marvel Book
This MFC book states that is Intermediate MFC. The subject matter of the book revolves around font metrics and system programming which is an interesting platform to exercise your MFC muscle throughout this book.Unlike most MFC books there is no reliance on the MFC AppWizards that makethe UNIX world laugh at the point and click Windows world. The code isgenerously saturated with useful comments to make out what the writer islogistically trying to achieve with his code. The diagrams in the book arevery clear and easy to understand. This book in my opinion is probably thebest overall MFC book. It has subject matter explained that Prosise doesnot dare to explain, or material that is usually undocumented. The book isnot a War and Piece tome, but a little over 600 pages or so is not thatbad. The ideal book for a novice who wants to solidify his MFC skills andlevel his knowledge at expert level. I recommend reading the primitiveexample driven, but basic knowledge required MFC From the Ground Up byShildt and then progress to this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Examples without explanation
Hi,
1-0 out of 5 stars Great For Programmers Who Enjoy Wasting Time
Sometimes the author shows the code you need to create a certain result and where to put it.Sometimes he does not.You have to do a lot of second-guessing when you read this book.I even tried looking through the CD to see if I could get the source code in context with the example application--na da, zip! Some of the code is outdated. If you are using Visual Studio 6 or later, forget this book. You will have tons of error messages. This is not the author's fault. This is the fault of those pointy-headed pinheads at Microsoft. They actually think changing the names of classes and functions is some sort of upgrade(lol). The book would be a lot better if it started with a simple application and expanded on that application showing where all the little code snippets go in the source files and how they work.Wouldn't that be nice?

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful application oriented book
While learning something new, it's always a dilema whether to learn concepts first, of whether to learn the application first. It'sa lot easier, if you have a book like this, which maintains a proper balance for you.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for working VC++ programmers
I make a living writing C++ code.Like many other MFC developers, I have been reluctant to move into the .NET world. This book is the bridge I needed to make the change.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant stuff!!
When I read the various quotes from this book I was a bit skeptical - especially the quotes from the program manager of Visual C++. I'm not saying I didn't believe the quotes, but I figured that lots of these guys know each other and help each other out with quotes. However, I did buy the book and am definitely happy with it! Here are my specific Pros and Cons:4-0 out of 5 stars Use XML and cryptography under .NET
There is a vast group of Visual C++ coders out there, you perhaps amongst them. Successfully writing and maintaining what is perhaps now large source code bodies. In doing so, you've become quite experienced and you know the ins and outs of Visual C++. But about 2 years ago, Microsoft starting pushing a wonderful new .NET platform. Impressive claims about how one could develop code in several languages sitting atop this. Technically nice. But for you, much of this was moot. 1-0 out of 5 stars COM Programming by Example
Caveat Emptor;
1-0 out of 5 stars Yeah Swank does it again
This is the worst example of a programming book I have ever purchased. The worst insult was the fact that even though on the cover it says using ActiveX. A whopping four pages are dedicated to ActiveX which is justscreen shots of what the MS IDE looks like and an explanation blatantlyproclaiming that if the reader wants to learn ActiveX then he or she needsto buy another book.Used car salesman and con artist selling an inferiorproduct use this type of tactic (the Bait and switch). Please heed mywarning save your money. Yeah John Swank does it again hopefully he willnot do it to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Swanke does it Again!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book brings back memories LOL
Looking for Schildts recent books and saw this one pop up on the list and it was like I was in the late 90's all over again LOL!But this was an extremely good book.Anyone that could make me understand MFC and ATL falls into the "super author" category.I'm only limiting this review to 4 stars because I never finished the book. And by the way, if you're still using MFC then WAKE UP BUDDY!Its a new world out there now so get on the .Net gravy train and stop banging your head against a wall with MFC and ATL.But if you must bang your head then use this book as a cushion because it will definitely make the job easier.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to MFC one can read
I have been studying C/C++ programming and MFC/Win32 API programming for approximately one year now and during this time I have accrued over one hundred books on the subject. This said, in the Visual C++/MFC category this book is the best introduction that I have found. One clear reason is that the author teaches MFC programming in the absence of the Visual Studio App Wizard so that the reader gets a fundamental understanding of how MFC works, from the ground up, just like the title suggests. The final chapter then covers the App Wizard, and Class Wizard as well. He also covers the Document/View architecture in one of the final chapters. Moreover, the exposition, in terms of code generated (functionality), very closely parallels the code and topics the author treats using the Win32 API in his book Windows 98 Programming from the ground up,
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Intro to MFC out there.
I have a few books on MFC and windows programming in general, with one thing in common - they were collecting dust on my shelf, because none of them covered the fundamentals good, they would all go right into wizards, or spend forever on semantics, without really teaching you why.I'm an embedded engineer, with good c background, and some experience with c++, and this book IS THE BEST.After spending less than 1 hour on first few chapters, I felt like I was finally getting it, and right now, more advanced reading like Blaszczak's MFC finally makes sense.I am also surprised by negative reviews here - in my opinion this book is THE book to get started with windows programming, and really know what you are doing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good as a second MFC book
I give this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it was published in 1997 and is somewhat outdated now. I purchased it in mid 99 because I liked the other book in the series, Win32 Programming by Brent Rector.5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - Better than MS offerings
After making relatively successful forays into MFC armed only with MS reference materials or books written by MS employees and I have finally found a book which explains MFC without marketing it. Very lucid andwell-written. I think the Document/View model is a bit less generic anduseful than is presented, but at least now I understand most of itsunderpinnings. One error - Delphi has never been interpreted (p.5);

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent first MFC book!
As a 4th year CS BSc student I might claim to be the owner of the greatest number of MFC books. Most are like the curate's egg - good in parts. It is with regret that I came upon Feuer's book so late in the buying sequence.Had I discovered it earlier my bank account would now be better and that ofAmazon somewhat less! Read more
