Information age philosophy in a nontraditional format.
I liked this book. The text is presented in an alternative fashion that really makes you think. Marshall McLuhan portrays his philosophy that the written language and industrial technology lead to a non-tribal life style, and a less feeling society, andthat the new information age (television and computers) are leading society back to a tribal, verbal, more feeling society.In Counterblast, McLuhan uses anunorthodox style of text,text as an artform, versustext that is read left to right, to make his point.This book may have been written in the sixties, but a lot of what he has to say is still pertinent to today's information society.Ido not agree with all his views on Television.In that some of the things he saw as benefits,thirty years later I see them as blights.It does make me wonder though, if thirty years from now the things I currently veiw as benefits of the PC,will still be viewed as benefits. ... Insightful!
Authors Marvin Cetron and Owen Davies examine anticipated trends in technology over the next 15 to 20 years. They categorize their studies under digital systems, the Internet, high-tech materials, nanotechnology, transportation, space, energy, medicine and environmental remediation. They examine specific technological proposals and estimate their chances for success within the next two decades. An appendix lists specific predictions and the probability that each will come to pass. The book is necessarily superficial, since it covers such a broad range of topics. Unavoidably, some predictions are already somewhat dated, particularly those about industries that undergo constant, rapid change, such as medicine, computers and the Internet. However, the book provides a thorough survey of the range of technologies that are under study and development. This book is a rich source of ideas and makes interesting connections among disparate technologies. We [...] recommend the book to all corporate planners, trend-researchers and long-term thinkers.
Probable Tommorow
I've read this book only half so far, but I tell even Siskel and Ebert would give this book 2 thumbs up I think..My opinion. I'm probably the only person in the Netherlands Antilles who bought this book. i'm honored to had bought it. I highly recommend it !!!

Plug it in, turn it on
This book is about how electricity transformed America. Nye explores how electricity changed the home (it was now cleaner and safer than gas), the factory, and transportation (it made the subway and inter-urban trolley-car systems possible). Americans embraced this new source of energy quickly and convincingly. The mantra, however, that electric appliances would free the housewife was not true: men did not take to the appliances as readily and (surprise!) women suddenly were doing chores (vacuuming) that men used to do (beat the rugs). There is a lot of detail in the book, but not much that is new or not obvious. For that reason it was somewhat dull.

An intriguing way of predicting the Internet's future
The thesis of this fascinating book is that there is no longer any technological determinism left for the Internet because we have the ability to make the technology do whatever we want it to do.The only constraint upon its development lies in the limits of our imaginations, so what the Internet will become depends upon how we conceptualize or even `dream' about the Internet."These dreams tap into metaphors we all use to understand our life experiences and convey deep and important messages about where we are going and what we are becoming" (p.390).His name is not mentioned but it is obvious that the influence of McLuhan lies over this book. Stefik says there are four basic metaphors which have so far shaped our thinking about the Net: the digital library (publishing and the community memory); the electronic mail metaphor (as a communication medium); the electronic marketplace (selling goods and services), and the digital world (the I-way as a gateway to experience).The selected readings have a huge historical and cultural depth which makes the book useful as an anthology alone.Stefik introduces each piece to place it in context, then after the extract he gives his own reflections. This book has some similarities to `Information and communication technologies: vision and realities', edited by William H. Dutton (OUP, 1996) but Stefik puts more emphasis on the `dreaming' of the future than Dutton, and also he has done more to classify the themes.There are also echoes of Ken Auletta's new book "The highwaymen: warriors of the information superhighway" (Random House, 1997) which makes it plain that even the heads of major computer companies don't know where we're heading. Not a book for the keyboard junkies who want to know what can be done on the Internet right now, nor is it easy reading for armchair philosophers.In fact it's hard to say who will read it, despite its intriguing content.Faculty and grad students concerned with technology and social change really must read it, and it will be a very useful book for those whose thinking takes the longer view. ... Uneven but worth reading
Like all anthologies, this book suffers from uneven quality.One or two essays are mediocre at best, one or two are great, and the rest fall somewhere in between.I find Haraway unreadable, the ultimate in academic hype (write enough gibberish and people will think you're a genius), and the interview with her isn't much better, but fortunately she isn't the whole book.Hartouni's thoughts on reproductive discourse are worth reading, and Penley's piece is great -- it revealed a really nifty subculture I'd never realized existed in addition to clarifying just what it was about Mr. Spock that made him so desirable to men and women alike.Overall,I thought this was a fun book to read, although I don't think it'll ever achieve classic status.

A classic on technoculture!?
Collected under the theme of technoculture Constance Penley and Andrew Ross have collected various case studies circulating around the promises and threats, facts and fictions of contemporary technological culture. This book is, of course, a classic for fans of Donna Haraway since it contains an inteview with as well as an article ("The Actors Are Cyborg, Nature Is Coyote, and the Geography Is Elsewhere") by the famous author of "A Cyborg Manifesto"(1985/1991, see also Haraway 1997). Constance Penley has also throughout the 90s written extensivly in the heterogenous field of feminist cultural studies (of science and technology). Don??t miss out on these tips!

There is a mistranslation in the article about Japanese technoporn. The writer(translator) confused the word "angel" with "nurse". Some other misreadings about Japanese popular cultureare seen. The writer and editors had to ask the Japanese speaker to readthe proof.The part of teenage hackers also reqire the proof reading aboutcomputer history.
