5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but missing import parts for Electronics/Com
This is an excellent book for studying advanced math. Important concepts clearly explained with good matlab examples. But I was surprised to find this book titled "Engineering Math" with the miss out of some thing like probability and random variables which are of the critical importance for Electronics/Communications students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves 6 stars
If you are not already a superuser of MATLAB or a mathematician and want to choose one single book on MATLAB that also brings a solid math base, this is the one.The authors have chosen the subjects very well, with emphasys on the use of mathematical principles coupled with the use of the computing power offered by MATLAB.5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for engineers

2-0 out of 5 stars Intelligentagents should steer clear from this book
Terrible and useless even for a book on AI for budding game developers. The theory and explanations in this book are sometimes decent but more often than not quite lacking. (es: in one of the first chapter the author uses Bresenham algorithm without taking the time to explain it). The use of tile based examples introduce unnecessary overhead, and the continuos attempts to introduce physics related code and references to the author's other book on game physics are just plain annoying. The range of subjects covered is very broad (chasing and evading, pathfinding, emergent behaviours, rule based reasoning, bayesian networks, neural networks, fuzzy logic, finite state machines, genetic algorithms), definitely too broad to treat each of these subject in decent depth and with clarity. Example code is of low quality and just superficially object-oriented. If you are looking for a decent introduction to game AI I recommend Matt Buckland "Programming Game AI by Example" and "AI Techniques for Game Programming".

3-0 out of 5 stars Conceptually OK, terrible code & implementation
AI for Game Developers is a book aimed at beginner game programmers that want to apply AI techniques in their games. The range of topics covered is vast, chasing, flocking, pathfinding, state machines, bayesian networks, neutal networks, genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic and more.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to start into AI
Is good book to initiate within world of AI, brings very good examples on fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, in my opinion would have to bring CD-ROM with more examples but even so I recommend them for people that is initiating within development of video games, have a simple way to explains concepts that in other books can that are abstract and until moments very confused, explain it of direct and very simple way, are a book not very extensive you will be able to read it in a pair of days, and thus to begin to apply it within any application or game, the code comes very simple manageable and easy to use,it comes in c++, I hope enjoy so much as I. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast entry to notation
I purchased this book to gain enough information to read a technical paper.Fuzzy logic is new to my industry (petroleum) and my 1970's education did not provide any background. The book took less than an evening to absorb and provided more than enough understanding of the notation and basic operations that I was able to read my paper and start building an interest in deploying Fuzzy logic in my daily work.Other books are needed to fully apply the methodology. However, sufficient demonstration of basic fuzzy arithmetic was provided to know that 2 times 3 divided by 2 is not necessarily 3.
4-0 out of 5 stars Breezy Intro to Fuzzy Logic
I was impressed by the fact that most symobology used in the book is defined during its first use. There are a few symbols like 'sup' on page 38 that I'm still unclear about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point
This book gives you an excellent introduction to Fuzzy Logic Concepts, Reasoning and Applications.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is the data ?
While i do not deny the contribution at providing a more or less complete treatment of neurofuzzy techniques for data modeling, i'm still wondering where the non-theoretical chapters dealing with how to cope with real data with these techniques are hidden. The few examples in the book are mostly artificial and very limited in their scope. i'm not sure people dealing with data have an interest at reading this book, it's more about neurofuzzy techniques than data modelling.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Care is needed
I would hesistate to give anything less than a 5 star review to anything on fuzzy set theory in the wide sense.Make no mistake reading this book is worth your time.Yet, some significant problems do exist with this text.
4-0 out of 5 stars First bible of fuzzy systems theory since Dubois and Prade.
A comprehensive and authoritative presentation of developments in themathematics of fuzzy systems theory over the past thiry years. While thebasic mathematics are presented, this book is not for the casual reader, but for those seriously interested in fuzzy systems theory. If the readerdoes not have a good mathematical background, he or she will find this booktough going. Coverage of theoretical fuzzy concepts is quite complete, including theory of fuzzy sets, fuzzy arithmetic, fuzzy relations, possiblity theory, fuzzy logic and uncertainty-based information. 5-0 out of 5 stars Robust treatment of fuzzy logic has interdisciplinary appeal
George and Bo have been as thorough and lucid in preparing this book aswell as George explicated systems thinking in the very first book of his Iread, "An Approach to General Systems Theory." Here, as there, without compromising mathematical rigor, the goal of this book is toelaborate its subject matter in such a robust manner that it hasmultidisciplinary appeal. As always, the reader is given a flexible, almostinteractive, access to the what, why and how of fuzzy thinking. Despite theexception taken by Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh, the "founder of fuzzylogic," the percipient reader will appreciate the authors' unusualassociation of "fuzzy measure," that is, the degree of beliefthat a particular element belongs to a crisp set, (not the degree ofmembership in the set), with Possibility Theory so as to clarify thedifferences between fuzzy set theory and probability theory. Theillustrative applications are not only case studies that one may pick andchoose from for examination and emulation but also constituteincontrovertible evidence of the successful and promising realization ofthe fuzzy paradigm. As a former professor of engineering at RutgersUniversity, I found the 79-page Instructor's manual helpful for self- orextended study and Iassume it would be valuable for teaching. I have readmany books on fuzzy logic and I judge this to be the most balanced to date,(early 1998), - not filled with C++ code or trying to sell a softwarepackage nor is it theoretically daunting - it is simply an invitingdemonstration of how fuzzy logic clears up foggy modeling and analysis. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A fine overview
The book is divided into four parts. The first part is about neural networks and is covered in much more depth than other parts. The author touches upon every major neural network paradigm and covers fundamental learning techniques. What bothers me about the first part is following:4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This book is suitable for undergraduates and first-year graduate students in computer science who are interested in getting an overview of what is and has been done in a field that used to be classified as "artificial intelligence". The new designation as "computational intelligence" was done so as to distance it from other activities in artificial intelligence that are deemed somewhat exotic, such as the efforts to build autonomous thinking machines. The book can be read very quickly, due to the sparse nature of the paragraph organization, and the author puts exercises at the end of each chapter to test the reader's insight and problem solving ability.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Advanced Neural networks Book
Bart's is legendary known for his contribution to Neural networks and Fuzzy logic. This book though very good, is an advanced level book preferably for a graduate student. Thorough knowledge of Signal analysis and probability would be needed for most part of the book. Advantages of the book is it is, if not the deepest book, on Neural networks and Fuzzy logic, it will surely count as one of the most finest book dealing in the subjects.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book - elementary and mainly electrical engg
This book develops both the theories from the basics. It wonderfully describes the various theories and architectures logically developing the ideas. It has a practical approach and a generalised view without any sortof bias on computer programming alone. Professor Kosko also mathematicallydescribes the underlying mechanism of both neural and fuzzy system. Theinterdisciplinary examples from various fields show how machineintelligence can be used as proper alternative approaches effectively.I recomend every Electrical and computer engg. to read the bookeventhough he/she does not work in the area of m/c intelligence. A must forpeople in M/C intelligence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Strong coverage of the relationship between fuzzy & neural
Kosko has two books, with similar titles published in 1991 and 1992(some copies) which together relate fuzzy and neural reasoning on both a mathematical/theoretical plane and the other on a practical plane. How to use neural networks to build fuzzy sets is one of many useful tools that can speed development of a fuzzy project. Also fuzzy rules can be derived using Kosko's methods with a neural net.If you can, acquire both.If neural practice or fuzzy practice is your goal this is the book to use. Strong on practical methods. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars better ways to classify data?
When you have data that is present in some n-dimensional space, you often want to make clusters. The problem is that most methods have a subjective component. What is a cluster is sometimes a matter of definition, within a given method. Clusters can also be used to try to draw up regions of that n-dimensional space. This constitutes a classification of future data. Well, how to do so?

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy and practical approach to fuzzy set theory
The book gives a clear and intuitive description of fuzzy math and its application. The discussions are done neatly and nicely. It doesn't get into hardcore math discussions very much; instead, it focuses on applications and practice. Therefore, it doesn't take much time to get the idea, and you are not bothered with very complex math proofs. The level of the theory is also limited to what needed in application. To my belief this is one of the best books for engineers and applied mathematicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource
This is a very nice reference book for fingerprint and face recognition. It consists of six chapters each in these two topics. The first chapters are reserved for introduction to the problems, discussion of the importantissues and an extensive survey of the literature. In the followingchapters, latest techniques are presented for solving problems such asenhancement, segmentation, feature extraction, representation andclassification. An invaluable resource for starters to get a quick view ofthe lietrature and learn about the latest developments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Research based book
For the novice reader in this field of expertise this book is well suited. It does not mean that this book is not extensively explained, but the book is easy to understand since it is going step by step through many research result examples conducted in clear way. The author intended the book to be finished within approximately few weeks of intensively reading, and some prior knowledges. The presentation is awesome and includes up-to-date notions, namely Neural Network approach, Fuzzy Logic perspective and Evolutionary Computing as well. The Evolutionary Computing contains Genetic Algorithm, Genetic Programming, Evolutionary Strategy, Evolutionary Programming and Differential Evolution. The four last notions are left in concise for some reasons. Furthermore, the Hybrid method,i.e. Neuro-Fuzzy, is explained completely by many research results exploiting the robustness of Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy inference system applied with Mackey-Glass Chaotic time series and Wang data nonlinear inputs. The most recent developments are presented in some pages including Wavelet Networks, Fractal Based Network and Fuzzy Clustering.
