3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!!
The idea of what the book is supposed to accomplish is great. I'm currently using the text in a class. It's not necessarily reader friendly and the instructor's resources are seriously lacking (errors in test bank - many, in textbook, no copies of textbook examples beyond image files - for instance, if the book shows a spreadsheet, the author doesn't provide you with the spreadsheet file, but an image of the spreadsheet - no kidding,). It could grow into my favorite series, if they tweak it and fix the errors, but it's so problematic at the moment, I might have to "can" it before next year. I would love to see the authors improve it. It's worth the effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this book led me out of the wilderness of R
After weeks struggling with poor and incomplete online documentation for the R language, this book was a breath of fresh air.The first four chapters alone, which give a broad and practical overview of the R / S / S-Plus environment, are worth the sticker price. In case it wasn't obvious at first (and it wasn't to me), R is the open-source implementation of the S language, and as the authors write in their introduction, "It is similar enough that almost all of the examples in this book can be run under R."
1-0 out of 5 stars just a large collection of examples -- no theory, no algorithm descriptions
I don't understand how this book received so many 5 star reviews. In my opinion, it is a complete waste of money, and totally unusable. It is simply a collection of example uses of S functions, with little or no background statistical theory, motivation, or justification for the methods used, and no descriptions of the specific algorithms underlying the S functions used. This promotes the horrible practice of using "canned" statistical routines without knowing exactly what's going on or how results should be interpreted. It was so frustrating to be forced to use this book for a class at UC Berkeley.Luckily I found a MUCH better book by Chambers and Hastie (from AT&T, where S was invented).I suppose if you're just looking for a large collection of "things you can do with S", this book might be okay for you.Personally, I was so appalled by this book that I sold it as soon as I found an excellent replacement (Chambers and Hastie, "Statistical Models in S".Chambers and Hastie is excellent!I love it!See my review).

5-0 out of 5 stars BEN FORTA IS AMAZING
This man is amazing. I can feel his passion for ColdFusion when I read the book. I also have his Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes and it's the same way. I have a library of technical books, mostly software and programming language books but I don't have any that are as easy to understand and as fun to follow as the Forta books. Lastly, I love reading classical literature as well. Some of my favorites are Dante's Inferno and Milton's Paradise Lost (Tom Sawyer, Edgar Allen Poe, Dostoevsky...). I rank this ColdFusion book as one of the best pieces of literature that I've ever read. That's how good it is to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT
This is the first book that I bought to start learning Cold Fusion(along with the Advanced Development), and it is by far one of the easiest books to read and make use of.Everything is written clearly, great explanations, great code samples each with tons of comments.Must read for any soon to be or already a CF developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first time I ever enjoyed writing a data-driven site.
I have been designing web sites for over ten years, but working with data-base driven sites has always been a major pain in the butt. Not until I stumbled onto this program and this book. WOW - Should cover my feelings on this topic. Talk about simple and POWERFUL. Imagine this - instead of writing over 200 lines of HTML, writing 40 lines of Coldfusion, operating an entire site from one page and from a 170 pages down to 9 (no joke). If you're using MS Access or MySQL, it makes no difference, instant and simple. In less then a week I had the site up and running - bug free. Finding a proper hosting company that runs Coldfusion is somewhat of a pain, but it is completely worth it. If you have never made a data-driven site before, this will make the experience extremely pleasant and if you have written many, this will make you wish you knew about this before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful info and perspective of running Oracle's database on Linux
This is a well written book for anyone who wants to learn lots of useful Linux specific details and perspective about set up, administration, monitoring, and tuning Oracle 10g on Linux.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied with the contents
If you read the editorial review: It is stated that the book is about installing and configuring Oracle Database 10g on Linux. Yes, the author did explain clearly the process of installing and configuring the Oracle 10g on Linux. He also covered a few more topics such as HA (High Availability), Tuning SQL, RAC, Replication, Index and Partitioning ... but not in depth. But the coverage is acceptable and useful. Do buy this book and you will find it useful if you love Oracle DBMS running on LINUX platform.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to Oracle 10g for Linux
As an experienced Oracle DBA, I wanted a nice text that covers Linux specifics to Oracle 10g. This book is okay not perfect but the only real Oracle 10g for Linux book on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Once - A Book That Delivers More Than What It Promises!
This book talks about everything imaginable in detail and with deep intent to enlighten the reader on every topic. They achieve it! In short - BUY IT!
4-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Functions separation
Ihave found the book to be excellent and very clear. It is very easy to learn and provides the necessary instructionto use Filemaker 8 powerfully. It is a great product and this is a great companion book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just as it claims: The Only FileMaker 8 Book You Need
While it is not the first book on the market on the new version of FileMaker Pro, Special Edition Using FileMaker 8 is definitely the best on the market for intermediate and advanced users. Written with great clarity, it shows not only the basics of FileMaker Pro, but it progresses to the more advanced topics such as XML/XSLT, FileMaker Server, ODBC/JDBC as well as web publishing. I specially enjoy the chapters on relational database design and data modeling, which many other books do a very poor job, if any at all. Two important areas of developing Filemaker Solution, Scripting and Function, are not only clearly explained, but extensive examples are used to show how they can be combined to make FileMaker Pro not only easy and fun to use, but also capable to tackle complex problems. All the example files are included in a cd, together will a pdf version of the book. I own FileMaker: The Missing Manual, which is great for beginner user to learn the basic; however, if you want to MASTER FileMaker Pro, this is the book to get. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Pocket Reference For SQL
This is a nice, quick guide for referencing SQL.This book is not a 900 page behemoth to teach you all the ins and outs of SQL setup and performance tweaking, nor is it a 30 page list of commands.Rather, it is a nice "tweener" guide (200+ pages) to get your feet wet and remind you of what commands are and how SQL can be used.'SQL In A Nutshell' covers SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL, going over the SQL standards that you can expect from these favorite flavors of SQL.Light on examples but heavy on syntax, I feel that this is a nice companion manual to have at your side when you need to remind yourself how a particular command should be written.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cross platform syntax reference
This is a solid desk reference for SQL syntax which provides invaluable material on the portability of each type of statement. The heart of the book is the four hundred pages of statement reference. Each statement is described with it's syntax and options. Then the support for each database (DB2, MySQL, Oracle, PostgresSQL, and SQL Server) is described in detail. There is a similar 120 page reference on SQL functions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book!
This is probably the worst book I have ever read. Granted the topic can be very vague and confusing at time, the author makes little attempt tp explain adequately the concepts.
3-0 out of 5 stars Purchased wrong edition
Shipping was fast. However, the edition of the book was never stated, and I assumed it was the 4th edition since the covers looked the same. However, the book I received was the 2nd edition.I can notice some very subtle differences in the covers of the 2nd & 4th editions, but at the time, it looked the same to me.*** My advice is to clearly state on the description what edition the book is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good theory, more advanced
In my opinion, 70% of this book is theory.I don't understand how anybody can use this book as a continuous guide. The first couple of chapters of the book are great, but it goes down hill from there. This book is good for those that want to gain a deep understanding of DBMS and how they optimize queries or things of that nature, but this book should not be used for an undergrad course. This book explains alot of concepts behind DBMS, concepts that might be nice to know, but will not benefit you in your database implementation. There are a couple of chapters dedicated to SQL, but that is it.And to be honest, it did not help me much at all.I agree with another person who made the comment if your course uses only this book, drop it because it will probably be a waste of time, unless you are interested in the inner workings of a DBMS. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book-Keep These Things Mind
This book is great, whether your a beginner or an expert just wanting to go back to your roots. Every part is described and you have websites that you can order them from. It's all very good. But there are just some things to keep in mind. First of all, there's a section on motors where he describes them and what they're used for. I assumed that we needed to buy them, so I bought the 5 pack that he mentions. Now on the next chapter afterwards, it turns out that we dont need those motors, but we need gearhead motors. So to me I was a little bummed because the motors he describes are basically for you to test and have fun with. It wasn't expensive but I was a little misguided and didnt like the shipping expense I made on motors I wasn't even going to apply to the robot. This brings me up to my next point: BUY ALL THE PARTS YOU NEED IN ONE ORDER. I had the idea of slowly ordering my parts as I read the book but the problem is that places like Digi-Key charge you a ridiculous amount for shipping, and when you need only 3 resistors and the shipping is about 10-20 times its cost, it gets a little annoying. So I would suggest just skimming the whole book to see what parts you will need and then getting them all together. This will also save you time as you go through the book since you will have all the parts that you need.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book is exactly as described in the title.
This book is perfect for a begginer or someone with a little experience. I ordered it because I had some knowldge about electronics but none related to robots. It fills in everybit of knowldge you could want, giving you the tools you need to actually accomplish something. After reading you have everything you need to build the robot in the book or something completely different and more to your liking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Find for Teaching Kids Electronics and Robotics
I have bought other robot building books in the past for my teenage son, yet I quickly got lost in each of them. Not sure how much he retained. Then I found this book. It's wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview Without Getting Bogged in Details
One of my long standing complaints about computer software books is that they so often eliminate the first forty pages or so that explain just what this software is and what is supposed to do. This book (at 606 pages it's a lot more than forty pages) is essentially the front end description that explains what SAP ERP is and what it si supposed to do.
1-0 out of 5 stars What happened in the new edition?
This edition appears to be about 1/3 the size of previous editions; and refers to a fairly old version of SAP... even though this was released in Dec 2005.
2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Book, barely skims the surface

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful book
This book is terrific. It has helped me go from a novice user of Access, to an advanced user. It has everything you need to know to build a solid database in an accessible format. The information is easy to find and incredibly easy to understand. I use it at work and I am continually having to track it down because it gets borrowed by my coworkers. Finally I asked the company to just buy a second copy, which they did.
4-0 out of 5 stars a nuts & bolts book for a database user
It is easy to follow, clear cut and useful. The reader should have a working knowledge of access. I found the work on queries best followed by reports then forms. It could use better proof reading but that's a minor thing compared to the books content. I definitely got the books price in useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very practical and useful
Great book.It is very practical and useful.I have managed to do several things following the book as a model.I understood relational databases, but needed some ideas and how-to's for making an application spiffy.I wasn't sure the queries would be useful, but low and behold had to do some queries in another database and they were very useful (most of my databases are not number based).I highly recommend it as a practical guide to doing some cool things! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best PL/SQL book I have ever read
I have attempted to learn pl/sql for a few years now and have been unable to find a book that pulls it all together. This book gently introduces you to a topic and then then shows you how to apply it. The comical nature of the author also makes the book interesting and fun. I believe its a must read for anyone attempting to learning pl/sql.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am using it in the context of a text book under one of the authors. My only complaint with the book is that some of the topics seems to be shallow in content (for example records in chapter 5). As a person just learning PL/SQL I rather like the fact that it covers many topics, and takes the time to show example after example with explanations. The organization seems to be fairly uniform. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn PL/SQL as it has helped me immensely. I have found the index to be rather lacking (hence the four stars).

4-0 out of 5 stars A couple of bad chapters, but good for 1Z0-147
I bought this book hoping it would help me pass the 1Z0-147 Oracle PL/SQL certification test, and it did.First the bad news: chapters five and six are horrible. The person that wrote these two chapters writes in the most pedantic way possible.Pages upon pages are filled with highly repetitive code, with each example followed by a detailed analysis of every statement!Compare this to the coding examples in other chapters, where statements of interest are highlighted and then followed by descriptions of their significance. If you want a laugh, check out page 225, where the author of chapter six says, "A problem with programming books is that concepts need to be illustrated with an economy of space."Wow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book to get you up to speed in no time!
At first, I was a little apprehensive about the book - I was thinking it was a repackaged 'Teach Yourself in 5 seconds a day' kind of thing where you end up flying throughout through the content without really learning anything. I needed to actually learn this topic and I needed to do it quickly - I bought this book on a Monday and had a MAJOR project for my Database Systems class due Friday night at midnight.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book delivers exactly what it promises
As a beginner in the PHP & MySQL world, this book provided everything I needed to go from nothing to a fully functioning dynamic site within days.Great examples, and most importantly he covers security concerns as well as best-practices for keeping everything running smooth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Learning PHP
As a whole, the Visual Quickstart and QuickPro guides are a great series, and this title - now in its second edition - is no exception.

4-0 out of 5 stars Big...but it reads like a novel!
Great book and easy to read! Author explain theory in basicterms and then, he give scripts or examples of how it should work or be written at TSQL level. Index's book it's almost perfect; for being a 1400 pages book it is not difficult to find any topic on it.You will find a lot of nice SQL 2000 tuning tips which add an extra value to the book itself. Could be used as a MCDBA prep. book and of course, in your job or if you're into Databases Admin. and Design business.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
I was suprised but the book is really good for both beginers as well as experts. I learned a lot from this book even thought I have been working with sql server for a long time.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is...ok so now i think Sams is better than Wrox...lol
Well I needed a crash course in SQL server management and some T-SQL.I attacked this book head-on. The book is very comprehensive and i am very amazed. It really is a complete guide to the GUI on SQL server. If you want some hard core T-SQL guidance then get another book...in addition. Sams teach yourself t-sql in 21 days is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best PeopleSoft book for Oracle DBA who needs to learn PeopleSoft support
I have been an Oracle DBA for ten years and needed to ramp up very quickly recently for a large client to support their PeopleSoft environment without time to get training on PeopleSoft. This book fits the void left empty as the other PeopleSoft books are geared toward PeopleSoft application developers and not for an Oracle DBA who needs to understand the new ways of working with Oracle databases and PeopleSoft applications. Definitely a gold mine of nuggets for those who need to understand Peoplesoft on Oracle!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic, focused, detailed
This book is a deep in-depth view of the function of Peoplesoft on an Oracle database. Not only does it cover the fundamentals of how Peoplesoft uses the database features, it also details almost every table in the system on a row by row basis. An in-depth resource which is sure to be invaluable to anyone using this software configuration. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Interaction Design
The majority of this book is from the thoughts and findings of other authors.Nothing orignal.Books is difficult to read and often does a poor job of explaining topics clearly.Currently using this book as a text book for a class and have to believe there is a better choice out there.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but not great
I have used this text for a year and half, for three instances of the same course (upper division undergrad).Good: 1. Each chapter is about a week's work, so it fits the schedule nicely; 2. Each chapter has "activities", "summary", and "assignments" which I find very useful when making assignments; 3. Lots of illustrations; 4. Interviews with professionals in the field are added at the end of each chapter -- this adds another dimension to the "textbook" aspects of the book; 5. Cartoons here and there. Could be improved: the quality of some of the illustrations -- some of them are photos that are dark and hard to make out. Some look like they came from the 1950s -- I am not sure how that is possible in a book published in 2002, but that's what it looks like to me.Still, the text is "nicely illustrated".The thing that stops this from being a "great" text is the quality of the writing and presentation of ideas. The writing is too simplistic.A "great" text finds ways to express things in a succinct manner, summarizing key ideas.Instead, this book tends to be wordy in many places, and lacks an effective organization of ideas. Finally, the text is starting to appear "dated", but few textbooks can withstand the breakneck speed of change in this area. That said, no student has complained (to me) about the text (but neither have they praised it). And, I have not been able to find a better text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Course Text for HCI students
The breath and depth of this text truly embodies the necessary content for beginning HCI students in an undergraduate and graduate program. I've successfully used this text every semester with my students since its inception. The author's perspective of the discipline accurately reflects an increasing trend in HCI education that places less emphasis on computing and more on designing products to enhance human communication based on the social sciences. It is organized to provide an instructor a way to pick and choose selected chapters or proceed sequentially. Each chapter is multi-dimensional in its approach to provide an array of content that includes both theory and practice. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars pretty poor book
very poorly laid out and confusing presaentation of both forms and reports.some fairly good detailed examples (if you can find them) but the overall presentation is chaotic.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great for forms, not so much for reports
This is a solid reference book for those doing primarily Forms development, but it lacks quite a little in the Reports department. If you're buying it for Reports development, as I did, you'll be disappointed.I have yet to find a very good Reports reference. That said, this is probably the best one out there. The book contains something like 70% - 30% Forms info to Reports info (and that may be a little generous). It does have a few good examples and is an easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is a great tool for creating Visual Basic Applications ... Read more
