4-0 out of 5 stars disappointed in Amazon....
I'm pretty disappointed in Amazon, actually, as the book I received was the same in title & author, but the cover of my photo was very different than the one pictured on Amazon. Note: I didn't buy the book from an individual seller, I bought it new directly from Amazon. Amazon really needs to make an effort to update their photo library whenever a book cover changes. Instead of a purple book, I received a book with a light brown front cover.... Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This book is clear and concise.Though the comparison between the Micro/Mini/Mainframes are a about 10 years out of date, the actual target material is right on.This book is organized in such a way as to be apowerful learning tool as well as a awesome reference.I couldn't havehoped for anything better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great beginner's source for TSO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter but a little thin
This VQS book gives a great high-level of a broad spectrum of functionality of Flash but does not go into much detail. Good starter book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
Adobe and Macromedia both write excellent software but both have two things in common - the lack of being user friendly and intuitive.

Editorial Review

The Domain Naming System (DNS) is a glorious thing. It takes familiar Internet network and machine names (like "amazon.com") and converts them to Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (like "208.35.218.15") that are meaningful to routers and therefore useful for identifying the machine you want to reach. What's amazing is that DNS enables someone in Germany to refer, by name, to a computer in Mongolia even if no one in Germany has ever accessed the distant machine before. It's pretty much self-configuring, too: No human effort in Germany is necessary to make the Mongolian machine reachable by name. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Presented Concepts and Implementations (5th ed.)
Foreword: I have been running my own DNS servers on OpenBSD and FreeBSD for about 4 years. All of my previous DNS knowledge was obtained from the man pages and online tutorials. 5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on DNS and Bind
First off, the most recent edition of this book was published in May 2006, so all reviews prior to that are discussing previous editions of this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, but not as clear as it could be
I found this book to be informative, but I sometimes had trouble understanding what they where saying.I found The Concise Guide to DNS and BIND by Nicolai Langfeldt to be more understandable in some places. If you have a good grasp of other parts of unix system administration, this book would most likely be fine. If you are more of a beginner and only want one book, get The Concise Guide. However, I recommend getting both, because they supplement each other very well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MCSE W2K Exam Cram Core Four
I am currently preparing for MCSE in Windows 2000.These books provide an excellent supplement to the material learned in class.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent prep
I'd have to say this is the best set of books to help you pass the core Microsoft exams you can get....but it is FAR from perfect. The Server book gave me to much of "you'll have to know" whatever to pass the exam, and then went on to NOT inform me of that subject. That's why I bought the book isn't it?4-0 out of 5 stars A very useful resource

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Book
I've spent over seven years creating metadata repositories and over this time I've definitely had to learn my craft the hard way. If I had this book from the start it would have made my life so much easier! This book is like two books in one, with the first part focusing on metadata fundamentals, ROI, architectural approaches, and how to evaluate metadata tools. The second part is like a consultant's handbook, with how to staff and scope the project, a project plan and an overview of the delivery mechanism. The metadata model in part two is very helpful; however, I do know that the author updated this model in his more recent metadata book. The "war" stories are particularly valuable as they made me feel like the author was watching the projects that I had worked on and correctly predicting all of the mistakes that I would make! If only I would have read the book sooner I could have avoided these pitfalls. Also this is the first book on metadata that is readable and addresses the subject from the business side. This is one of the most useful books that I've ever read!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good anecdotes, bad aproach to subject
Since the title sounds quite well, it's not a book to spend time. Although Metadata it's not a bad idea at all, today it's better spending our time on the Semantic Web aproach. For example, for a good introductionon that subject try "A Semantic Web Primer".
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Overview of Meta Data
Books and materials on Meta Data have a tendency to hyperbole on theoretical aspects. Recently I set out to find a book, on Meta Data, to accompany a presentation I was making to the Insurance Industry Association.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to operating systems
If you are a fan of the other Deitel books, you will probably like this one as well.I used this book in an undergraduate operating systems course and found it to be very useful.I later used the "dinosaurs" book (Silberschatz et al.) in a graduate course and was quite disappointed by the lack of detail.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good intention != good implementation!
As many other reviewers have mentioned, this book has good content and very well written. However, the plethora of ancilliary information and cliche side-notes, mini-case-studies make what could've been a bar-non primer into a dreadful book. Even though I particularly think that OS is one of the bastions of computer science and thus I think it's a very interesting field, the authors totally missed their target audience insofar as design and layout is concerned! Additionally, this book is peculiar in that it tries to teach some OS examples using (of all possible languages) Java! What gives? Even my teacher (who usually defends this book) was upset about that one. And little by little the author manage to get a book you liked at the beginning of the semester into this horrendous text you don't even want to glance into. I gave three stars, because I do think that the content in the first five six chapters is really well explained and supported...overall...buy it if you must!

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but overstuffed with unnecessary material
There are some good things to say about this book. It's written in clear, plain language, with helpful illustrations and code examples.Key terms are highlighted and defined concisely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book does the best job i've seen covering all the aspects needed to make the move from windows to linux administration. It also makes for an excellent reference for someone just starting out in linux that need a foothold to get going.I just wish I had found this book 3 years ago when i first started playing around with linux, it would have made my life so much easier.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows transition to Linux
I'm guilty; I've been a Windows user for the longest time. However, I've always wanted to experiment with Linux, but the difficulty of most installations and the configuration headaches were just too m uch for me.
5-0 out of 5 stars I give this book six stars out of five
I'd like to give this book more stars than just five. I'm an experienced Windows Systems Administrator, and I was advised it would be in my best interest to gain familiarity and experience with Linux.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all performance analysts/ engineer's ..
A solid book indeed. It has the right mixture of theory and practical cases well dealt with. The techinques must be tried for performance analysis and implemented in real time projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid book.
I'm a performance analyst. I couldn't do my job properly without this book. It really is that simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars a classic text..
This is an absolute gem. I really think that this book must be read by every CS/EE engineer. Performance analysis is always something that comes as an afterthought and engineers think that some some "mathematical" guy called a perf analyst will stop by after the product is completed and analyze the product. This is def wrong. PA should be done at every stage of production. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for script samples
This book does a pretty good job of starting you out in Windows scripting.I purchased it because I am a Windows server administrator and it looked like it would help - and it did.It has to be said that the entire text of the book is on Microsoft's web site in the Technet Scriptcenter, but sometimes you want the paper in your hands as well.Another recommendation is Advanced VBScript for Microsoft Windows Administrators (also MS Press, ISBN 0735622442) if you are looking for some goodies for Windows admin like me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Arrogant behemoth achieves new level of smug conceit
Now I remember (again) why I hate Microsoft.First, they come up with a terminology all their own, then they pretend that's the standard.Like a "scripting host".Because Microsoft has a product (an add on to fix the shortcomings of DOS, as I see it) called "Windows Scripting Host", suddenly scripting hosts are standard teminology.I don't know about you, but to me a host is a machine on a network, usually a server of some kind. No, to Microsoft the Unix Boune shell is a scripting host!
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent start on my scripting education
I'm now up to Chaper 17 (of 18) and have read, highlighted and annotated my through the book.I've learned a tremendous amount, and have impressed my boss and coworkers with the great scripts I've been able tp put together with the aid of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Windows XP
I have been teaching in our town's senior center since April '2000.This is an update to the book we have been using and find it to be an excellent source for beginners and those a little more experienced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself visually
this is a book on windows xp and everything you ever wanted to know and how to do things with xp windows

4-0 out of 5 stars I thought it did the job.
It reviewed some pretty elementary Windows procedures, and I didn't need some of that...but then it answered the questions I had concerning differences from Windows 98 nicely. I really like the "visually" concept very much and it is super in that regard, too. I used it in conjunction with the XP tutorial that came already loaded with the software. For me, the book was a big time saver with easy reference of different subjects. Particularly good if you're "spotty" on some of your basic skills. I did think it was a little oddly organized, but everything I needed was there, and that's what counted for me. I recommend this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars nice book to start c# and writing code for forms
I wanted to do some windows programming in C#, bougt a lot of books but found this the only one that really helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Introduction to C#, WinForms. and .net 2.0
This is hands down the most clearly-written explanation of programing windows forms using C# that I have read or seen on the market.Petzold has an easy and engaging writing style. He takes the time to explain the WHAT and the WHY of what you are doing. This is a great book for someone just sitting down to Visual Studio 2005 to begin learning C# programming. His examples and walkthroughs produce useful and functioning examples of the most common aspects of Win Form programming. My only complaint is that he can only dedicate a chapter to some pretty key concepts, like data-binding.My interest is piqued, and then the chapter ends and we move on to new concepts. This is a small complaint because what he does provide is complete and enlightening. It provides a solid foundation to build off of create your own experiments.
5-0 out of 5 stars Uses the New .NET 2.0 Enhancements for a Quick Start
The Microsoft .NET program continues to expand with each release of Windows. In the .NET Framework 2.0, introduced in the fall of 2005 significant enhancements were made. These enable the programmer to implement Windows applications that are both powerful and sharp looking with considerably less effort than before. This book is somewhat of a quick introduction to writing such applications taking advantage of the new features.

1-0 out of 5 stars A quick glaze over some good topics - but
I think a book costing this much money should provide in-depth coverage of the topics. This looks like a rush job to me and very sophomoric. How do books like this make it through production?
5-0 out of 5 stars Good "bible" for beginners and those who wish to solve most common problems easily
This book is definitly not intended for professionals, and definition of "bible" is questionable when book deals with big things such as Debian. Of course this book can't solve every possible problem or show you everything. In order to achieve that, it should have few thousands pages :) However, it will serve you well if you wish a complete guidance in installing debian on common pc platforms and configuring it. It will give you good practical understanding of all linux and debian specific things needed for fast start and will cover most of things you might want to do. Some things You can no expect from this book: this book won't teach you for instance how to build stealth internet server and cover detailed configuration of every aspect of it, it won't teach you how to become supreme administrator etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars For the beginners
I have been a Debian user for two years, and have used GNU/Linux for the past three/four years. I thought I would learn a great deal from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Edition Updated for SP1 and R2
The 2nd edition of the Windows Server 2003 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is excellent! It's nearly 600 pages focus on the core of Windows Server 2003 administration and provide immediate answers. Stanek's clear explanations helped me get my head round some of the advanced topics of system administration. In short, excellent writing style, good coverage of core system admin and highly recommended.
5-0 out of 5 stars What you need to know right now to fix the problem
The words 'Pocket Consultant' in the title are interesting. I don't have a pocket anywhere near big enought to hold this 600 page book. On the otherhand, you don't need the wheeled dolly to cart abound the whole library you needed when you were first learning how to be an administrator.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value
Good depth - covers multiple subjects and has plenty of expert advice. Does an excellent job of covering the most important aspects of Windows administration. I was surprised by how much information is packed into ~600 pages. Concise and portable just like it says. It's the one windows book I use the most. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic Advice from an Experienced Practitioner
It is refreshing to see a book (like mine, Enterprise Knowledge Integrity - The Data Qualtiy Approach) that not only discusses the value of formalizing business rules, but also describes how to make those rules actionable. The fundamental approach described in this book provides great detail for anyone who is interested in actually transitioning from an environment where business knowledge is deployed by programmers and managed within application code to one where business rules are incorporated as enterprise metadata to be managed as critical organizational knowledge.
2-0 out of 5 stars Warning: Read before buying!
As a C++ developer recently tasked to design a "rules-engine" for a real-time application, I purchased this book with the hope of discovering an alternative to a "true" rule-engine (i.e., one that utilizes rule chaining and a pattern matching algorithm).

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for developers and architects
For any developer or architect, this book is a great reference guide for strong object-oriented programming design. The solutions described in this book are applicable for numerous business problems today, as they should be leveraged in enterprise applications.
4-0 out of 5 stars describes a few key patterns for beginners
Design patterns are a key concept for much of programming design. Here, Shalloway focuses on when you want to implement object oriented code. Many useful design patterns are given. Including such well known ones as the Strategy Pattern and the Bridge Pattern. Typically, each explained pattern gets a chapter of its own. To provide a detailed walkthrough. Handy if you're still new to the overall concept of patterns. This does mean that there really aren't that many patterns covered in depth. Less than 20. But these are the main ones for beginners to appreciate and use.
2-0 out of 5 stars Why explain?
After going over this book I had this rhetoric question: `Why did the original need so much "explaining"?` Of course Design Patterns by Gamma, Helm, Johnson and Vlissides is not a light reading and I had to go a couple of times (and still do) over certain aspects in order to get a good understanding. And still the substance and depth of the "original" are incomparable with present material. I admit, the book under review presentation is clear, but the concepts are fairly basic while the examples did not give me the most "natural" feeling. ... Read more
