5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
A good book for who wanna learn about Real Time Operative Systems. Easy to read and full of interesting information

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good book, but ...
Actually I think that it's a great book only if you have a strong background about how a kernel or RTOS works. I've spent a lot of time reading a theoretical books that teach you what a kernel is about, so for me the reading was easy. The fact that the book includes the source code makes it awesome, 'cause you can see inside a truly real kernel, and eventually write your own (what is I want to do). But if you are an unexperienced user of kernels, or just want to learn something about it, you should start somewhere else. The one a recomend you is that of Andy Tanenbaum, the creator of MINIX (minix is a tiny unix running in an intel 8086 cpu), and this other one that I bought here: Real-Time Concepts for Embedded Systems by Qing Li, Caroline Yao. After you deeply understand what a pipe o scheduler is, among other things, then you should start thinking about coding, because the book has some lack of theory. Anyway I strongly recomend it for experienced users. Have a nice coding =)

3-0 out of 5 stars Writing style is often confusing
I have a general background in computer science and am trying to learn about embedded systems from this book.My main objection is that the writing needs to be edited to improve clarity. For example on page 61, the author states "Generally, the first message inserted in the queue is the first message extracted from the queue (FIFO).In addition, to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, uC/OS-II allows a task to get messages Last-In-First-Out (LIFO)."The second sentence is ambiguous.Does it mean "In addition to the ability to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, ..." or "In addition, in order to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, ..."?On the next page the author states "Interrupts allow a microprocessor to process events when they occur, which prevents the microprocessor from continuously polling (looking at) an event to see if it has occurred."In this sentence, "prevents the microprocessor from" should be changed to "removes the need for the microprocessor to be".The average reader already knows enough about LIFOs, FIFOs, and interrupts to interpret these sentences correctly, but in many other cases the lack of clarity is a serious impediment to understanding. The book also contains various errors. For example, the path name of a .xls file, given on pages 370 and 403, is incorrect. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Tons of information, but hit and miss.
The book covers a ton of information and is usually excellent for reference. However, every now and then there is a subject that is thin. Backups is a good example. Such an important part of the system and there are only a few pages on the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming knowledgeable in computers
Excellent book! It answers every possible question or doubt about Windows XP in clear, accurate, accessible language. The whole family here is very happy with the purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book for a Unix guy like me
For a Unix guy like me, command line tools (and scripting) is essential. This book is truly fantastic for that. It has stuff that I could not find even with google. Very well organized and well-presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT RESOURCE!
Stanek's Command-line Pocket Consultant is hands-down the best on the subject. It's clear, concise and packed with useful details. It covers just about everything I've ever wanted to do from the command-line, and has extremely detailed information on some areas (such as printers, performancing monitoring, and advance hard disk config) covered nowhere else. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice compact reference to the Windows command-line.
If you use the Windows command-line then this book should be very usefull. The most usefull section is the batch script reference. It can be a real time saver when you writing a batch script and you cant remember how to do something. This book also contains the most usefull commands you will use when you are maintaning computers and servers. One thing I dont like about this book is that it containsinformation about using the command-line for Windows Server 2003, I think this should be left out and put in a seperate pocket consultant. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars securing your system
Kuo and Beland help the sysadmin who might be new to SUSE Linux. Conceptually, you can think of the book as two interwoved parts. The first part is explaining generic linux, or even unix, operations. Applicable to a Red Hat or Solaris machine, perhaps.

Difficult Side
2-0 out of 5 stars not a good starting point
This is not a good book to start with. The book by Gray and Meyer and Hurst and Lewis is anyday much much better than this book. This book does not care to explain the meaning of small-signal operation and analysis and even such basic important aspects such as biasing and more subtler aspects in later chaters in feedback theory etc etc. It is not at all a good starting point. The excersises are good. Still not at all comparable to analysis and design of analog integrated circuits by gray and meyer... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference on Linux subsystems, not a book for starters
This book is not for Linux (kernel) newbies but for those who already know their way around the kernel and seek detailed info on certain parts of it. This book has some good overviews on different subsystems of the Linux kernel. Some sections, like USB, have been expanded since the second edition of this book. I would have liked to see a section on the new 2.6 scheduler.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful for a normal coder looking to learn Unix drivers.
If you are trying to learn how to write Linux Device drivers from scratch, this is probably not the book for you. I believe I am somewhat C/C++ savvy, and I expect sample code that is less than 10 lines of code to compile correctly.
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't even read the free online version
This book was so badly written that I just couldn't help writing my first review on Amazon. I NEVER bothered writting reviews.

Editorial Review

Optimizing compilers, which turn human-readable programming languages into the smallest, most efficient machine code possible, are among the most complex pieces of software ever written. Building a compiler is both science and black art and demands an intimate knowledge of data structures, algorithms, high-level programming languages, and processor architectures and their instruction sets. 2-0 out of 5 stars Confusing at best
I've seen chapter 14 of this book referenced (by a university professor giving suggestion to his students, not by a random guy) as:
1-0 out of 5 stars Good for seasoned compiler writers, bad for CS students
Ok, let's be fair. This book provides a broad coverage of useful optimizations and it will be useful in case you work writing compilers AND have some experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Advances in compiler design do not get much press these days. The reasons for this are unclear, but no doubt the perception that compilers need no further improvement has something to do with this. This book, written by one of the leading experts on compilers, certainly dispels this belief. Once readers get used to the idiosyncratic ICAN (Informal Compiler Algorithm Notation) invented by the author and used throughout the book, they get a comprehensive overview of compilers, especially that of optimization. Compilers for the SPARC, PowerPC, DEC, and Pentium architectures are treated in the book. The predominant emphasis of the book is in optimization, and so a few more recent and important topics in compiler construction, such as partial evaluation, are not discussed. Readers are expected to have a prior background in elementary compiler theory. My primary interest in reading the book was to gain insight into the compilation issues that arise in symbolic programming languages such as LISP and Prolog. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars too many junks in the book
I have to say it's a book full of junks and gaudy texts. The author wants to cover all the topics in this field but he ignores the readability as a scientific reader. Most of the time you may find all the texts are lack of focus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage on Distributed Systems
I just completed this book for a graduate course on Distributed Systems and was amazed at the volume of coverage on so many topics ranging from CORBA, RPCs, Fault Tolerance and Security to list just a few.Tanenbaum is reknown as being the best writer in Computer Science and this is an excellent book to read and use as a reference. My only complaint is that it is starting to show signs of being dated and this is why I gave it only 4 instead of 5 stars. Hopefully, in a new edition there will be coverage on the super network GRID and more enhanced and extensive coverage of Intelligent Agents.

2-0 out of 5 stars cyber kid
My Operating Systems course used this book and we were assigned chapters that did not coincide. Lack of editing, and no source code for process and child process creation, nor thread or how a thread can spawn another thread. This book is incredibly disappointing. This book does not read well at all.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid, but not Stallings' best book.
I've just finished using this book for a course and I wanted to write a review while the information was still fresh in my mind. However because mine looks to be the only positive review I will probably fall into the trap of rebutting some of the other reviews.

1-0 out of 5 stars Try getting useful information out of this thing
Organization? Perhaps in a Faulkner stream-of-consciousness sense. "Applications" is _chapter 14_. The topic emphasis has little to do w/ the needs of most developers. You get two entire chapters on "Design Time Integration", whereas you get a small (two page) subsection on "Keyboard Handling" and likewise "Scrolling". Gee, how about if I want to handle the _arrow keys_!? Maybe you could explain scrolling in more than a paragraph of English text? How about an example? To top it off, it's in a narrative & chummy style. Yuck.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Things You Need to Know to Write a Great Windows Forms Application
The basics of Windows forms programming are fairly obvious. You drag controls from the toolbox onto the design surface, set the properties as necessary, and wire code to the events. For simple apps this is all you need to know and you typically don't need to bother with the documentation.
2-0 out of 5 stars Try MSDN Instead...
What a disappointment. I went in to this book knowing almost nothing about Windows Forms. After reading it, I think I know less now than when I started.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi level book.
The book is keystone for those involved in FEA. It covers all the aspects of Finite Element formulation of physical problems, thought in a more coincise way with respect to , say, Zienkiewicz work and in a less prosaic way. As with many other FE books, the level of mathematics involved in the book is quite high, especially if one considers the non linear finite element formulation for continuum mechanics. Even though the book is mainly intended for structural engineers, it covers fluid dynamics and heat transfer topics. The section I mostly used was the one regarding solution methods for FEM problems: here, Dr Bathe makes a really nice job (about 150 pages). There's a code at the end of the book, it's a FORTRAN 77 one, but one can translate it into a more modern language (I guess we all should get the rid of FORTRAN 77....).
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent finite element text
This is an excellent text for students and practioners alike. The presentation is brief and to the point and focuses only on algorithms and techniques that have been proven to work. The problems are excellent and can only be solved if one understands the essence of the techniques presented. There are many textbooks on finite elements but none so thought provoking as this one. Definitely a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great coverage of complex material

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch your options!
It is good book, decent reference but if you like I'm just starting out get "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD course. Yes it is pricey but you're getting precisely what you have been paying for. I found this book to be great but in the same time I found the DVD course to be unmatched. The ability to sit down and listen and watch and follow is can not be substituted with a book. If you are more on economy side, I found that there's no economy as I'm now of the subjects that with book like that, or with any other book it would take me forever to come up.
5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' reference!
Arnold Robbins' UNIX IN A NUTSHELL, 4TH EDITION defines what UNIX means in a changing world where there is no standard-bearer, covering common parts of the leading Unix-like operating systems, how to understand and locate commands which work across versions, and how to use tools which have become a 'part' of Unix even though they don't ship with the operating system, from CVs and GNU Make to GDB, curl and wget. UNIX operating system users simply must have this reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars DE FACTO UNIX
Are you a Unix user, programmer or system administrator? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Arnold Robbins, has written an outstanding 4th edition of abook that presents the broader state of Unix in today's world.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks depth
I bought the book because the table of contents showed that the book covered the topics comprehensively. However, there is a serious lack of depth. I think the book is good for students who are just learning about linux and embedded systems, but not as useful for the more serious and experienced developer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and useful
I take this opportunity to congratulate authors on the job WELL DONE. This book emphasizes on "programming" aspect of embedded Linux which is missing from earlier books like one from karim yaghmour. The topics such as MTD, real time, embedded graphics, uclinux are presented very clearly and in detailed manner. Overall, it's GOOD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE VI reference
This book is the reference for those wanting to understand the mysteries of Vi. Almost all Unix based systems typically have a variant of the Vi editor installed, even when the system is in a limited use state, therefore an understanding of this no-nonsense editor is crucial if you want to administer or recover your system.
