1-0 out of 5 stars shipping problems
Haven't got it yet. paid over 20$ for next day delivery as was offered, and when I checked the order it said estimated delivery date was 6 days later. Called cstmr srvc and Amanda argued with me about how I was wrong about the delivery date that was offerd. When I asked about the charge she just ignored me and kept talking about how I was wrong and the item wasnt available for next day delivery. So I asked for a supervisor and instead of her saying ok, tried to argue with me some more. I had to yell at her to get a super on the phone. Anyways the super tried to tell me the same thing, but after actually looking at my order he then changed his story and assured me it would arrive on time or the shipping charges would be dropped guess we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks for your great cstmr srvc AMAZON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent preparation
I purchased this book for study purposes after taking a class that was supposed to completely prepare you to pass the 70-290 exam.Thinking that this would be mostly review, I tore into the material last week when I got it and found that it is way more in depth than my class was.Excellent depth and the writing style is easy to follow.

2-0 out of 5 stars Miserable dictionary of doublespeak
Not recommended for native speakers of the English language.
5-0 out of 5 stars The overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more
Joe Richards, Robbie Allen and Alistair G. Lowe-Norris' Active Directory, 3rd Edition is also for Windows administrators who may know all to well about the problems it's brought to prior versions of windows. This edition considers the Directory for Windows 2000, 2003 and its updates, considering the overall pros and cons of Active Directory, common tips and traps, and more. Yes, you can use Microsoft's documentation for many similar answers; but here they are arranged in a more logical manner and provide more candid assessments to help users upgrade or understand options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bookbut get the new edition
This Cookbook is the best selling of the Active Directory books. But you should know that there is a new Second Edition simply called Active Directory Cookbook that was revised by Joe Richards, the MVP and it has a lot of good stuff on topics like ADAM and updates for SP2.So get that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is a great resource covering a wide variety of interactions with Active Directory.Whether you are new or experienced with AD, this book is an invaluable tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for Ubuntu users
As a new Ubuntu linux user (about 1 year experience) I found this book to be extremely useful.
3-0 out of 5 stars Where is the CD?
A good intro for Linux novices. Lot of hacks, but the idea of Ubuntu is that you really do not need hacking... Anyway, if one hack can save you a day of learning the wrong ways, it'd be worth it. As the book is written for beginners, one wonders why there is no CD with it...

5-0 out of 5 stars a useful reference to get up to speed on Ubuntu
I found this book a very useful howto to get up to speed in using Ubuntu and Linux in general. I loved the section on installing ATI and Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu as well as some of the multi-media hacks which has only helped to get more out of this os.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
It covers a lot of tools and solution to problems that I didn't know about, but it still can't replace Microsoft's knowledge base.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Windows XP Professional Resource Kit
This book is amazing for learning Windows xp Professional.Even though I have a different version of XP it helped with tweaking the computer's graphics and multimedia. It is good book if you are staying at home on a rainy day and want to tinker with your pc.The book is thorough and covers installation to troubleshooting.I haven't read all of it yet because it is like a encyclopedia but from what I have seen it has a lot to offer a newbie or someone who is more advanced.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is useful, but....
The book is a good reference, but I find it a bit more than needed for a beginer, while less than an admin would want. The tools are very helpful as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars beginners level
I'm not writing this to discredit the book. I think it is very well done. I just think it should be made clear that this is a beginners level book. There is a lot of emphasis placed on translating cat os into native. There are also numerous examples of how to configure various topologies. I think it is very well done. However, anybody who can read and use the univercd, will have a wealth of knowledge, far beyond what can be contained in this book, within a few mouse clicks.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good book at showing Cat configs
CiscoPress's "Cisco Field Manual: Catalyst Switch Configuration" by Hucaby and McQuerry is a very strong attempt at documenting the configuration implementations of Cisco switches.Any Cisco Switching book is going to need to make a decision as soon as the first page - and that is how best to document the two separate and totally different versions of Cisco Catalyst operating systems - COS and OS.This book takes a different tact - and one that I think works very well.Instead of splitting up the two OS domains and describing each in their own respective sections - the authors have decided to show how to implement both types of commands at the same time. This little difference is profound in the way it helps demonstrate the use of each command and eliminates redundancy found in other all-in-one switching books.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Everyday Switch Administrators
I am a network engineer and use the Catalyst 2900, 2950, 3500 and the 4000's on a daily basis. We do a lot of VLAN configurations, trunking using 801.q, static port access, along with other various switch configs. This book has been indispensable for my daily routines. There has not once been an instant where I couldn't find the answer to what I was trying to accomplish when configuring a Cisco Catalyst Switch. This also gives you the commands for COS and IOS and also tells you which switch supports what and which switch doesn't (example: the Catalyst 2950 supports 801.q by default, where others support ISL by default). I highly recommend this book for all your switching administrative needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Solaris System Admin Book
have used this book to upgrade my Solaris Admin certification to Solaris 10. I've had a few versions of Solaris certifications, and I can say it for sure that this is the best SCSA certification book I have read so far. The author does an excellent job in staying true to the exam objectives and yet presenting the material as a cohesive course in basic Solaris 10 system administration. There is a perfect logical flow. The author starts each topic from scratch and covers it to an adequate depth, while defining and explaining all terms and concepts on the way. That makes it a self contained book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not really impressed
I've taken and been a certified Sun Solaris administrator for many years.I decided to upgrade my certification to Solaris 10 and purchased this book as a reference. It's a good reference, but was not really a contributing factor in preparing for the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars Passed Both the Exams
Passed both the exams (310-200 and 310-202) by studying just from this book. Feels great! Along the way, this book cleared many doubts and confusions that I had. I'm very pleased with my score on the exam, and with this book. Great book! It's going to stay in my shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but impractical information
While covering a lot of infomration, this book still did not answer basic questions about how to use Sharepoint. It is geared more for the tech/programmer rather than the end-user.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best book on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Raising the Usability for (GNU) Linux(R) Performance Tools
[Review: long]
2-0 out of 5 stars Could have just used man iostat/sar/vmsat/ps
Let me start off by saying that this book is not really bad.It doesnt really give any wrong information, it is organized in fairly nice fashion, and for beginners its probably a great place to start. The title is a little misleading though. It doesnt really give a bit of advice on how to optimize Linux performance. It is merely a beginners language version of the man page for tools.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well done, but could have done more
I liked the attention to detail throughout this book, but felt it could have gone much farther. The case studies were excellent, but at the same time disappointing because they concentrated on code bugs/problems rather than optimization of the system itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
The more I dive into the MCSE path the more I relize there is not one book that covers everything you need to know for the exam. This book does an excellent job of explaining the topics that it covers. That said it covers about 85% of what you need to know.Nearly 50% of the test was on RRAS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful Book - Avoid
I haven't taken the exam yet, so I can't comment on the appropriatness of the book to the exam, but my biggest gripe is the ridiculous number of errors in this book. Even with the official list of errata at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830785, I've lost count of the number of additional errors. If you do the exercises and think "why isn't this working?", you've hit yet another error. My advice: demand a refund immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the "Concepts" Book
This book does a good job in keeping up with the Title, "OS Concepts". I won't go in detail justifying that, as it's already been done by several before me.
4-0 out of 5 stars Accessible treatment of complex topics
This book does a great job of presenting all details of operating system design and operation. When appropriate, the authors point out how Linux, Solaris or Windows implements a given topic. This is valuable for software developers who work on these platform and need to understand how the scheduler is going to react if you spawn new threads/processes.

Good book for learning OS principles for undergrad and lower grad students. I recommend this for hose wanting an introduction to OS Internals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on 80x86 Assembler
Great book to learn the basics of 16 bit and 32 bit Assembler coding using the 80x86 architecture.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject
It's a well organized and clearly written book. I am reading the 4th edition and it's not about DOS anymore. The previous reviews on earlier editions should be removed. Another very nice thing of this book is it has a lot of exercises. Each section has about 10 small quizes, and each chapter has several bigger projects for you to practice. These are essential to learn a computer language.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding coverage of a vital computer foundation...
Mr. Irvine's book is an outstanding introduction into the x86 microprocessor family and beyond. This is a great text for use in undergraduate CS classes or for any Joe who wants to learn to bust bits on bare metal. While some coverage may seem outdated (ala the days of DOS), only the initiated know that programming a computer on the lowest level possible is the ULTIMATE form of control.

4-0 out of 5 stars number one book I now use
After visiting Darren's website and exchanging emails, I bought the book. Sure I've got other GPO books on the shelf (and the table and the floor) but this book as quickly became "THE" number one book I use.Just in the first few days with this book, I was able to resolve 4 of those annoying non-critical items that mean nothing to end-users but annoyed me every time I saw it occur. And in the days after that, I was not only able to get many other backlogged GP items resolved, but even threw in some razzle as well. I especially found their discussion of the GPMC and RSOP modelingvery helpful - I've been struggling to master both (and with those other books) and with the short time with the book, I've picked up both quickly.I'm by no means a master on this (yet) but getting there quickly and this book has and will help.Writing style is short, crisp and to the point - the kind I like. The only negative is that my co-workers keep stealing it! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks
I made a great purchase in Amazon, the books are brilliant and delivery was very fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING you'd ever want to know about group policy
I got this because it was recommended to me. Plus I couldn't live without Stanek's Windows Server 2003 Inside Out and he's a coauthor of this so I was fairly certain it would be worthwhile. Initially, I spent most of my time in the first few chapters as will most admins. The first chapter covers how group policy works with solid depiction of default policy and what it should/shouldn't be used for. The next chapter drills into everything you need to know about GPO creation, linking, delegation, RSoP, and GPMC. Chapter 3 is where I finally learned how GP processing and refresh work from low to high - something even Moskowitz's book doesn't do a good job of detailing. There's also detailed discussion on copy, import, backup, and restore - again something not covered well in Moskowitz's book. Chapter 4 is about deploying Group Policy with design considerations, best practices, and migration details. Chapter 5 is about hardening clients and servers using policy. I would have paid the cover price for these 5 chapters (200+ pages) alone. The rest of the book drills chapter by chapter into nearly every area of policy, policy optimization, policy customization (550+ pages). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the computer-savvy Linux newbie...
It seems that Ubuntu Linux has made the leap from "just another distro" to "distro of choice" as opposed to Fedora.Since I haven't done anything with Ubuntu yet, I decided to get started with a review of the book Beginning Ubuntu Linux: From Novice to Professional by Keir Thomas. While I'm not sure it caters completely to the professional, I think it does a good job of getting a computer-savvy person up to speed on what they can expect from running a Linux distribution (in this case, Ubuntu).
4-0 out of 5 stars recommend
I have dabbled with Linux before. Mainly installing RedHat9 on my Thinkpad in a dual-boot with Windows98.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful book for all Ubuntu Linuxusers
Anybody who have heard about Linux would be aware of Ubuntu which is a very popular flavor of Linux created by the South African firm Canonical founded by the space tourist Mark Shuttleworth. In fact, they set the precedent of supplying free CDs of this very popular OS to any one interested in installing and trying out Linux on their machine. Recently, I got hold of this wonderful book named "Beginning Ubuntu Linux - From Novice to Professional" authored by Kier Thomas. Being a Ubuntu user myself, I was pleased to see a Linux book specifically concentrating on Ubuntu, finding its way to the book stores. This book is aimed at people who are new to Linux and who wish to start their Linux journey by installing Ubuntu on their machines.

5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering, Clear, and Consise
I have to say that this book is simply amazing.I have searched the longest to clearly understand not just about PKI, but actually how to implement it, and was always referred to tombs of mathematical theory and such. This book demystifies PKI infrastructure in clear and concise explanations (but not overkill though), and has a lot of material on how to practically implement a variety of PKI architectures that can fit small businesses to huge enterprise corporations.
4-0 out of 5 stars Bset book I've seen on PKI and certificate management
Brian Komar tackles, what I've seen countless other authors refer to as a difficult to understand subject matter. It appearantly took a whole team at Microsoft to explain it to him, but it looks like he got it right.Of the many books I've read that address certificates and PKI this is the only one I've seen that presents a complete picture, where I didn't walk away wondering... but how does this part of it work, or why did they do that this way.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best PKI implementation guide
This is by far the best reference out there for understanding PKI in general and implementing Microsoft Windows Server 2003 CA infrastructure. Komar's depth of knowledge and breadth of experience clearly shows. Found the description of CAPolicy.INF files and sample files and scripts in this book extremely useful - that alone saved me a lot of time. And it doesn't end there...

5-0 out of 5 stars One very useful reading
As my experience suggests this highly useful book does very well as a companion for "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD.While it is nicely written it is a pleasure to read and follow. As I followed someone's review, I have coupled it with the DVD and they supplement one another quite nicely! Concise format makes it easier to find topics as required.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool
Have you ever wondered how to create 12000 principle in kerberos from a list of username and passwords, maybe the data is stored in some mysql database? Yeah I had to do that and this book came to my aid.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction
I came across Expect while I was trying to find a programming language to automate certain tasks in my experiments. After seeing how practical it was with automating command line sessions and I decided to get this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reference to have
The good thing about this book is that it gives one a basic back ground of TCL before delving into Expect which, makes it an excellent "quick" reference book to have on the shelf. The only drawback I can really think of is that it is not extensive as it should be to make it an exhaustive reference guide. Read more
