5-0 out of 5 stars Great Technical Book
This is a great book. It is very informative and very useful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage, well written
I found this book to be both comprehensive and well written. It was recommended to me by a very experienced AIX user. I am much less experienced, but I also found the book very helpful- it has a good mix of information, and is presented in a logical, well formatted way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Techno shock
I used AIX in the mid 90's. I got pretty good at installations, SNA services, peripherals and applications. Since them I switched to HP/UX and moves from version 9 to 10 to 11; so I am familiar with today's systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars very insightful UNIX introduction
Well, once I have started with this book and it had beenhelpful and well guiding book. In is not the "only" book you will need. I have followed someone review's advice and paired this book with a "UNIX Essentials" DVD and they made a very effective couple.
5-0 out of 5 stars nice first UNIX book
I like easy to read book and I also had assumed that learning UNIX is not necessarily has to be a struggle. This book stood up to my expectations almost perfectly: it is very well written and clearly expressed work. It does not overwhelm with technical details and does not press too much. I also followed an advise in someone review and purchased "UNIX Essentials" DVD that is complete unix course recorded. These two nicely complement one another. You watch it and you read it. If you didn't catch it from the first try you watch it again and read it again. In two months I found myself confident to that extend that gave advises to our system administrator and he accepted them because there were subjects that he wasn't completely sure. What I can say, in three month I passed my first interview and got a job! Sure it is a way to start there much of more advanced reading that will take over you with a time however these two provide you with the BASIS!
4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent handy reference for LEARNERS
I made a mistake buying this book. It may not be apparent from the cover graphics that the name of this book is 'Learning the (in smaller print) UNIX Operating System' and not just 'Unix operating System' - which I was looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent z/OS JCL reference resource
This book is a tremendous reference resource for anyone who works in the IBM mainframe environment, especially for those who don't work with JCL on a daily basis or for those seldom-used tasks for which you may not have any "canned" JCL readily available. I strongly recommend this book as an invaluable JCL reference document.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I Understand Mainframes
My job requires me to write scripts on Windows and Unix platforms.I have no problem writing Windows batch files or Unix shell scripts to copy or move files, change permissions, create and delete directories, write results to log files, etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I am a mainframe programmer for 8 years and never had a good book like this one. I wanted to have a good book that will give me all the information I need so I selected this book after reading the review comments of this book. When I received this book and checked the contents I was disappointed so I thought I should return this book. But after started reading this book I was so surprised to see a book that was so organized and well explained. It was like when we study we make important notes of the concept which will be useful to refresh for interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a sense of humor.
It's sad to see that so many computer users seem to have no sense of humor. I, for one, appreciate a book that approaches such a dry subject with a smirk and lightens the weighty technical jargon with an occasional witty aside.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great in Layman's terms
Highly recommended.I just bought a new iMAC and had zero experience with Tiger or Apple software.I like the way the author keeps your interest with sometimes dull materiel.Hard to put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Linux Kernel People
I recently started working on the Linux kernel and found myself3-0 out of 5 stars What's there is good, but...
In many ways this is a great book. The subject is one that is known to induce headaches, and the author covers it with truly admirable clarity. It's worth buying the book for the chapter on cache consistency alone; like many others, I had to spend years piecing the same information together from varied sources, and it would be hard to overstate the value of having it all in one place.5-0 out of 5 stars THE book if you are a kernel/threading developer.
I work on MP SVR4 kernels and this book is where I got most of my basics on MP from. I didn't understand the contents all at once - especially the initial intro to memory models in chapter 8, but after reading the SPARC specs (V8 & V9) and chapter 13, I can see how all this is relevant.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book was a disappointment. I had expected a reference of the caliber of David Pogue's Mac OS X Tiger manual.Among problem areas: a hard-to-navigate and incomplete index, fuzzy photo insets, and incorrect cross-references. The manual has the feel of something put together in a hurry without proper proof-reading, and borrowing heavily from canned sources. I learned some things but had to work harder to glean the information than I should have. I would not recommend this manual, unless it's the only game in town. I don't think it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware the mistakes
I am a big fan of the Missing Manual series. Previous books have given me lots of insights into my installed software and have made my computing time much more efficient. I therefore approached this book with much enthusiasm. Office is such a gargantuan program, with tons of bells and whistles, that Microsoft itself estimates that most userstake advantage of less than a third of its capabilities.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book crippled by inadequate index
I was impressed by the other 'Missing Manual' book which I have read, their guide to OSX, and had high hopes for this one.The book itself is quite decent, though not as well written as the OSX guide. However, it is crippled by a totally inadequate index.First, the way in which the index is organized makes little sense -- some Word topics are listed alphabetically on their own, while others are grouped together as sub-entries under 'Word', forcing you to look in several different places.Far worse, the index is simply incomplete, making it difficult if not impossible to look upthe answers to specific questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars A trully admirable accomplishment - must have type of book
Before you spend your time and money on purchasing any books on the subject, buy this one first. Depending on your background and your needs, it may also be the last one you will purchase.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book and covers the 2.6 kernel
This is an excellent book which explains everything related to the TCP/IP Linux implementation in the 2.6 kernel. There are other excellent Linux networking books, but this is the best one in terms of the details for the TCP/IP implementation.
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction for an Engineer
This is an in-depth guide to implementing and using the Linux TCP/IP stack. It begins with a general overview of TCP/IP networking, with background information on applicable networking standards. From there, it details the TCP/IP implementation in Linux by following a pack of data as it flows through the stack from the sending system, out the wire, and back through the input side of the stack in the receiving machine. This unique approach gives programmers an inside look at the entire process.

5-0 out of 5 stars The better book you can get about OO
There's no way someone can get to know about objects without reading meyer's book. It's huge but worth

5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommended as a first introduction to OOP
When writing a treatise on computer programming one has to strike a balance between providing a book that is both useful (which usually means writing within the context of a compilable programming language), but general enough so as not to oversimplify or truncate parts of the theory because it is not represented by the chosen language. In OOSC2 Meyer does just this, by providing a sound and general introduction to object-oriented programming, while using the Eiffel language for purposes of notation and practical programming examples.
4-0 out of 5 stars very good, but not the holy grail of software engineering
In this book Bertrand Meyer did an excelllent job in explaining object oriented software design in a rigourous way. Too often authors of OO books were not formal and rigorous enough, leading to a lot of confusion in the OO world. This book gives a very formal and exact treatment of Object orienteation. As a consequence this book is a must read for every OO expert. That the book focusses on eiffel should not be seen as a drawback : you can apply most of the explained techniques in other OO languages.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, informative, and a great read (oh, and practical!)
This is perhaps one of the most fun Linux books I've had the pleasure of reading. It's called Ubuntu Linux For Non-Geeks by Rickford Grant, and the focus is on getting Ubuntu up and running, and *getting things done*.Quirky, comical, and best of all...practical.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geek Human Beings
Ubuntu for Non-Geeks is the next installment of Rickford Grant's crusade to bring the penguin to those who don't have the geek gene (or at least, don't think they do.) Like Linux Made Easy and Linux for Non-Geeks, this book centers more on the "how to do x,y,z" rather than theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight forward guide to test management
"Managing the Testing Process" is the book that I used as a guide when I started as a tester years ago. I found that, while it focuses on the bigger picture of test management, many of the tidbits included help me to report what I do to non-testers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Rex Black explains clearly and deliberately
My take on this book is that it`s more about creating organization within your test schedule and documentation. He goes through each step of the QA process, from documenting requirements to double-checking the results, and explains how you can spend hours upon hours of documentation for your QA efforts.
3-0 out of 5 stars Testcase Tracking in Excel?
Black keeps on stating, that he has a lot of practical experience. The book is supposed to help me in my daily business as a (for me) testmanager. Well, it did not.

5-0 out of 5 stars magnificent discussion of internal architecture of UNIX
While there may be more detail to be found in "The Magic Garden," or more up-to-date coverage in the likes of Vahalia or Schimmel, Bach's opus is, in the view of this twenty-plus-year UNIX guru, unmatched. I say this because only while reading Bach's book do I experience the sense of philsophic structural perfection, of tool-orientation, of practicality-versus-theoretic-efficiency tradeoff, that characterizes the earliest UNIX monographs (Ritchie, Kernighan, Bourne, Lycklama, Ossana; that sort of thing) that busied me as a freshman. Bach imparts to the reader a glorious--and gloriously holistic--depiction of the structure of the UNIX kernel as a unit. Algorithmic details are provided where appropriate. Exceptionally well thought-out exercises stimulate the reader to extend the textual material where meet. The material is assuredly out of date, but I dare you to critize, say, Lions as being "out of date" (whether or not it describes a 25-year-old, 9K-LOC kernel, it is a scripture of paramount importance, a cornerstone of my computer engineering [n.b.: I didn't say "computer science"] library).
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book on UNIX Internals
It is one of the greatest books that I have ever read on UNIX. It is a comprhensive yet simple depiction of Unix Operating System. This book is a MUST READ for UNIX / UNIX LIKE Operating System Engineers. It is worth possesing a copy as it can come handy quite regularly. I give it a full go go!

5-0 out of 5 stars A model for how technical books should be written
Maurice Bach's The Design of the Unix Operating System still holds the place of honor on my technical reference bookshelf. After almost 20 years, it provides a clear overview of basic Unix organization and operations and is a model for how technical books should be written.Readers who complain that the text is dated evidently did not bother to notice the 1986 copyright date. Its age, however, has not diminished its clarity of content or usefulness in understanding the Unix operating system. Bach deserves an award for excellence in technical writing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Serves Its Purpose
I am prompted to write this review owing to the number of negative comments I have seen. I personally read the book and I found it very informative and easy to understand. Axapta is a huge application and it is not very easy to understand, just as how math is a huge and deep topic. However, learning math helps if you understand the fundamental topics. If you miss the fundamentals God help you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book - get a copy today.
This is an excellent book.It is comprehensive and well written. This book should be read by anyone who is either considering purchasing Dynamics AX or has recently purchased the product. All new users will learn a great deal of information from this book.In fact, all good resellers of Dynamics AX should include a copy of this book at no charge with a sales quote to a potential customer. If I had this book two years ago, I could have saved my company several thousands of dollars in consulting fees alone. This book is an excellent `jump start' to gain overall Axapta knowledge, and is a great value for the money. This book will become a `must read' for all Dynamics AX implementers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trying hard to cover everything... but....
At first glance the book looks very impressive and promising; however you don't have to read many pages before the cold truth of the authors' dilemma hits you. Covering a product as huge as Axapta in less than 500 pages is impossible, so choosing the right level of detail is vital. The authors chose the same approach as the online documentation shipping with the product. They describe in a clear and easy digestible language the most important forms in great detail. The online documentation has rightfully been accused of not providing procedural information (Step-by-step descriptions of how to accomplish tasks spanning multiple forms) or overview information (How everything ties together). Unfortunately this book does not provide that information either. Since the page count is limited one could have hoped non-trivial information was prioritized. That isn't the case. This book is however more than just a rewrite of the online documentation. It contains many valuable and interesting insights where appropriate. Don't expect this book to give you a lot of new information; but it gives you the opportunity to bring it all to the beach.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the money, but still pretty good
I've been in a fight w/ Apple and Peachpit over this 'new' version of DVDSP4.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not updated for DVD Studio Pro 4
While this book is probably the best DVD Studio Pro guide currently available, be aware that it doesn't contain any information about the new features in DVD Studio Pro 4 (e.g partitioning GPRMs and allocating menus to VTS folders). In fact, some of the statements made in this book, while true for DVD Studio Pro 3, are factually incorrect for DVD Studio Pro 4 (e.g. 1 GB limit for menus). Since I already have Martin Sitter's excellent Visual QuickPro Guide for DVD Studio Pro 3, this book was a waste of money for me. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, but weak editing
I read this book in preparation for an ESX deployment at my workplace. I must say that this book answered all of my questions, and I feel that I'm ready to take on the new challenge of virtualization. This book covers the concepts, software, best practices, and necessary changes in mindset quite thoroughly.
5-0 out of 5 stars An informative and practical resource source.
VMware's ESX is dissected and placed into a practical context.Ron includes many comments and observations taken from the field and even ex parte conversations with industry experts, adding value to an already informative ESX source. It is written in a very readable style.Though it may be true that part of the contents is available in ESX's product documentation, the organization and logical flow provided by the book allow such information to be readily available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I am halfway through the book and really like it.The technology is exciting and the book is very good at walking you through the considerations and instructions related to building a VMware ESX Server without using "Microsoft Speak".Cannot go wrong buying this book. ... Read more
