Excellent
This book is just great. It has a lot of examples and every concept is well explained. Even for those who are not used to programming, this is a great book to start shell scripting.
Very Helpful Reference to KSH
I found this book very helpful in learning to write scripts for the Korn Shell.I keep it on my desk all the time now, even for other shells (Bash/etc).It's an invaluable reference to me.

A must if you use KSH
While not as popular (at least in Linux circles) as bash, ksh is a powerful language/tool.Put bluntly, this is one of the few O'Reilly books I have read cover to cover.That isn't to say that the others don't warrant a thorough perusal, but that this book was readily accessible and provided excellent information.I have used it as a reference countless times over the years and do not hesitate to recommend it to anyone using or considering using ksh.Moreover, if you are considering using ksh - or perhaps need a better background in Unix shell scripting - read this book. ... Fantastic book with excellent coverage of multithreaded programming
The best thing about this book, in my opinion, is numerous comparisons that Mr. Hart makes between UNIX and Windows.As a recent Computer Science graduate, all of my system programming experience was in a UNIX environment. (My university used that OS for programming assignment exclusively.)After graduating, however, I found myself in a job that uses Windows.From school, I was familiar with the things I needed to do - parallel programming, sockets, services, but I had no idea how to actually implement such things in Windows.Mr. Hart's direct comparisons to UNIX gave me a frame of reference that made it easier for me to learn the subject matter quicker.

Test Preparation, but also a lot of Basic Material
It has taken a while to get this book published. 1230 pages of material takes a lot of time to put together. Obviously the stated aim of this book is to prepare the student to take the exam. However, even if you are not planning on taking the exam, the material covered here is a complete book on Windows Server 2003 Networking. It covers everything from defining TCP/IP to troubleshooting nearly any kind of trouble.

Great book, good companion to UNIX DVD!
This book makes a great companion for "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD course! It is nicely written, pleasure to read and easy to follow. It is one of these books that were carefully edited and the examples work correctly. As I mentioned I have coupled it with the DVD and these two make very efficient couple!
Excellent, even while out of date.
While the Linux world develops by the day, and new advances and Kernels are constantly being updated, this book remains a helpful and near essential tool for a beginning Linux user. From the absolute basics to a moderately advanced approach, this book offers a huge amount of tips as to which direction to approach Linux. I would suggest that anyone reading this book actually download and install the most recent distributions rather than installing the outdated ones on the disks.
everything a noob will need to get up and running linux in no time
i've been thinking what to avail first, the RHFL3 Bible or this one. i just thought this one would be the right one to start learning linux and administering it. well, my decision was right and this Linux Bible really is a bible, learned a lot from it and even a dummy will not have a hard time following what the author wants to say in this book. only problem i have with this one is it didn't discuss configuring a DNS server. nways, still a great book to start with... ... Compehensive and More
Lisa wirtes one of the most (if not the best) comprehensive books about Final Cut Pro enabling almost anyone to "get it" when even the Apple Manuals and on line help do not. I had her version 4 book and now the version 5 book. I only hope she updatesit for version 6, 7, 8, 9 etc, that Apple most assuredly will continue to release.

I Like The Visual Guide Format for Learning Software
The folks that do the Visual QuickPro Guides have developed an interesting format that they use for computer books. Basically each page has two columns. The outside column has the text that describes what is being done on that page. The column near the gutter of the book is used for screen shots that show what the screen should look like as you do the procedure described on the outside column. This philosophy is combined with an excellent index and table of contents to enable you to quickly find what you want to do.
An invaluable reference!
Lisa Brenneis has done it again!This book is a great primerand a very thorough reference source.I studied it for several days before taking a course in Final Cut Pro and went into the class better prepared than I would have been without this book.

Good Book for Beginners
I have Linspire 5.0 and I wanted to learn more about Linux command line. The book is good if you are using Fedora Core and it was a good start for command line. I enjoyed it but it could be a little more in depth.

Great Place to Start with Linux
If you want to learn to use Linux for your desktop computer but are not intested in indepth technical jargon then this is the book for you. It is written in simple, easy to understand "non-geek" English so that the average computer user can understand what is going on. Anyone should be up and running Linux in a short time. And by running Linux I mean doing all the things you want to do on the computer. This book focuses on teaching the average home user how to do the things you want to do like customizing your desktop and icons, surfing the net, playing your CD's and mp3's, downloading and installing games and software (all for free), and much more. Even after using Linux for a few years I still use this book for reference if I need to look something up.
Linux for Non-Geeks
The book is very helpful in setting up a Fedora Linux installation if the accomopaning disks were complete. The insturctions in the book were clear and concise.

This is a great book.How many technical books have you read in 1 week?That's what I did with this book.I love the Head First series. They don't make great reference books if you are an expert, but the expert on the title topic is not the audience.

After reading a great book titled "Thinking in Java (JAVA 1.4)" by Bruce Ekcel.That book is so far the best book I have read on JAVA so far.It has TONS of information and for the most part the author does a very good job in explaining the information.However my main complaint with the TIJ book was that it was very hard to read at times due to the author's writting style.

Doesnt worth its price
Provided you have NO knowledge on C programming and microcontroller, otherwise you dont really need this book. I personally think that big portion of contents could be found in CCS's manual and sample code FREE.
Excelent book for a Newbie!
For a Newbie on PIC C programming like me, this is really an excellent book. It teaches C language programming, helping the reader to create an entire program (step-by-step). Also, the reader can understand the PIC architecture and learn how use a C compiler (like CCS C). Finally, the reader can learn and try to implement a complete project using microcontrollers. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking to make a travel through the field of microcontrollers and embedded programming.

iPod Book: Doing Cool Stuff with the iPod and the iTunes Music Store, The (2nd Edition)
Great book! Love the writing style. It's like reading a personal e-mail from a friend and is so easy to understand.I don't do well with manuals, as a rule.I'll purchase Mr. Kelby's books in the future without hesitation.

Easy to use resource for the non-tech savvy
I bought this book because of the format - each page has a set of instructions for how to do one thing, ensuring that it is kept simple and concise. I have had a video iPod since Christmas 2005 and could figure out enough to make playlists, download, and rip but knew no other tricks. My library now looks cleaner, misspelled titles/artists are now corrected, and I know how to better organize my over 6000 songs.

The book is well edited and has obviously evloved since its first edition to meet the needs of its readers, based on their feedback.
Absolutely the best reference for programmers new to Perl
I am not new to programming, but was new to Perl when I took a job that required a ton of pattern matching based scripting. I immediately convinced my boss to buy a bunch of Perl books, including this one. Usually, I am the type to use Google more than any book when learning a new language, but this book has been indispensible. I go to it first anytime I want to know how to do something in Perl, and 9 times out of 10 it is the only resource I need. Respectable coverage on Windows Security, from trustworthy folks

Terrific update to excellent security guide!
I have previously done a review of the First Edition of the Microsoft Windows Security Resource Kit which I was very impressed with. All what I said for that book still applies. The first book applied to Windows 2000 and XP Pro. Since then there has been a major upgrade for XP in SP2 and the introduction of Windows 2003 which the Second Edition covers. As with the first book this edition is great for anyone that wants to learn how to secure their Windows 2000/2003/XP Pro operating systems/networks and is geared mostly to administrator types though anyone with such interest including power users will find it extremely helpful.

Good introduction and reference resource
This is a useful introduction to the Bash shell used in unix, linux, and other *nix type operating systems. It takes you from a very basic introduction into deeper concepts including shell scripting and customization. Highly recommended for the niche market it is intended to reach. I found it clear, useful and detailed without being dull.

Essential linux skills.
This book (2nd. ed.) shows how bash shell programming exploits special capabilities of linux and unix. Shell programming manages other, more specialized, programs. So understanding the shell is essential to fully exploiting multitasking environments like linux.

An Essential Source for Robust 3D Graphics Engine Design
I have not yet been able to purchase the second edition of this book.However, since it is a refinement of the first edition, I feel that I am somewhat competent to review this later version of Lengyel's text on this knowledge of the fundamental chapters which are included in both editions.
Even better than the first edition
I gave the first edition of this book a 5 star rating, so considering that the second edition provides updates to the original as well as four new chapters, it's no surprise that the second edition earns a 5 star rating as well.
This book is fantastic
This book is great. Its material is well explained, the topics covered are complete (for the most part), and the examples make sense. It is a fantastic reference that should be on the shelf of any professional game programmer or aspiring game programmer. However, this book isn't a hand holding guide to making "cool" games, as some reviewers expected it to be. There is no single book for that. There are so many topics to cover, it would be impossible to put them all into one text. Please don't be fooled by reviews from non-professionals, as this book is a must have. Decent study guide
I found the Sybex book to be full of all the information I need to study for the Linux+ exam.It is rather a dry read though, but it still takes time to explain things in simple concepts.I enjoy the fact that the practice exams will work in a linux environment, but I was a bit let down when the pdf version of the book would not work in FedoraCore 4 due to some security measure on the pdf.Overall this is a decent book for the price.

Pretty good...
This book was the main focus of my studies... I have been doing administration for 4 years now, so it was mostly just to fill in blanks. It did well with that respect to things. 1 night of study of this book and one other, and I was good to go. After browsing through the chapter content a bit, I would suggest having a second book available to contrast this book. If you can't really afford it though, go through the book, and take time to actually perform the various functions and examples throughout the book. That should get you ready for the test.
There is more to know
I have been a casual Linux user for about three years, and a serious student of Linux networking and programming for about a year, so I figured that all I would need to pass the Linux+ exam is a little time with study guide.So I studied this book for two weeks, then went and took the test, and failed.That was my own fault, I didn't apply myself.So I went back, worked through every step of every example in the book, memorized everything I could, and got to the point where I could correctly answer every end of chapter question and scored 89% the first time I took the sample exam included on the CD-ROM.I took the test again and failed again.There were many, many questions on the test that were nowhere to be found in this book, relating to both hardware and software.

Windows XP Speed Solutions
PC Magazine is always a great source for computer technical information, and this book is a good example.It is technical yet easy enough for lay people to read and understand.Each topic is independent of the others, so if you are looking for a specific solution, you can find it.I recommend it.

The most error prone book I have ever read.
I am sure that most of the Exam Cram books are good.That being said, this book is so full of errors that it is almost unreadable.The claim that SQL servers have 30 disk drives in them, that SAN devices have dual 2.8 GHz procs with 4GB of RAM, or that GBICs have SC connectors is disappointing.But when it references the most common copper connection is the DB9, or in the study questions that DNS servers do not do name/IP resolution, we have now reached a point that using this book will actually hinder your progress.
Clear, concise, and to the point.
This book is a great study resource for the new Server+ Exam. I recommend it to anyone looking to take the test who needs a great study resource!!

Not an outstanding study guide for SK0-002, but good enough to pass
My exam tested memory types/specs as well as SCSI and SAN technologies very heavily, which this book does an excellent job of covering.There were many other questions this guide covered very little or not at all.For example, the exam tests on fire suppression technologies, something that is not even mentioned in this guide.I got a 732 out of 900.This is pretty much the only unofficial SK0-002 study guide out there for Server+ right now, so the only way you could get a more complete guide is to buy the official self-study materials from CompTIA.This guide is probably your best bet for value. ... I bought this book to learn about SUSE Linux 10 (as opposed to 9 or any other version).While I realize there is a significant amount of similarity between the versions, a book titled "SUSE Linux 10" should explain the differences.
Disappointing
The book appears as if it tries to cover too much too quickly, and as if it was released in haste.There are conceptual errors as well as factual errors.
Not enough information
The information presented in this book seem to have been written inhaste.The topics come to an abrupt end without much explanation. At many places, it merely points to other resources without even presenting some brief discussion.The section on kernel compilation is very short.No information is provided on selection of options under "make xconfig" command.It seems to be a very basic introduction to SuSe Linux. ...
