5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive (2nd Edition)
Well done compilation that is approachable while covering a lot of ground. If you need one book that touches on all the technology aspects of the cable industry and can fit on your bookshelf, this is it. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference
This book is a remarkable survey of a very broad field. It is necessarily somewhat superficial in its coverage of some of the more abstruse topics, but provides the necessary essentials an engineer needs to operate in the cable television environment.Unlike mere compendia of archival publications, this book has a consistent pedagogical viewpoint and notation. It is oriented towards practicing engineers, providing just enough theory to support successful problem solving.I recommend it to anyone working in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook
In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. A vade mecum (lat. goes with me, means essential) for every CATV engineer or technician. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dear Bill,
Bill,
2-0 out of 5 stars This book should have been under 200 pages ..
There is useful information in this book but it5-0 out of 5 stars Required for anyone who is serious about interface design
The field of interface and interaction design is formally known as Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). It is significant that a large amount of HCI deals with non-programming issues such as psychological approaches to end-user experience, social manners of the audience, and more. The Essential Guide to User Interface Design provide a comprehensive overview of the essentials of interface design. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A practical guid to Red Hat?
I have read the other reviews of this book. All got to say is that I feel that most of them must have read a different book! I not completely new to Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise but I am no expert so I thought the book wouldbe very suitable for me how wrong can you be. I give you an example Samba very popular application. Can be difficult to setup with the in-built Fedora Firewall. The book chapter is useless in giving you a real tutorial on how to really get the program working it gives you a little bit of information than completel lets you down. This is only an example chapter after chapter are like this. My recommadation if you learning Linux buy an other Red Hat book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for its intended audience (Third Edition)
As a course book, this is simply wonderful. It is a step by step education in Linux (RH and FC, specifically) and it leaves out nothing of importance. The word "comprehensive" should have been in the title somewhere.
1-0 out of 5 stars Belongs in the Linux for Dummies line of publishing ...
With all due respect, this is trully a waste of your time if you are expecting to get info on Fedora Core. Page after page is burned on such trivialities as 'ls', and 'cat' commands; even how to delete a word or a line using an editor. In reality, this book has very little to say anything specific for Fedora. It may have a redeeming value as an intro to Linux for newbies...but flops in this respect as well; newbies will look at the title and continue browsing for other books. You can have mine for free if after reading this you are still considering buying it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Definitive
I say it's not definitive because I think that means there's nothing more to be said on the subject. The MS Windows Installer technology is huge, and it would take a book five times the length of this one to be definitive. This book describes the client/server architecture of the installer and explains about the important tables in the database. It demonstrates how to make an installation package with Visual Studio, but assumes you will be using a commercial package in real life.To get the most out of the book, you'll need to install Orca, which is available in the Microsoft Installer SDK. Orca lets you view and edit the tables in an installation package.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not for the grammer police
I liked that this was a Windows Installer book. I also liked how short it was (less than 300 pages). The author has an impressive resume which is at odds with the books grammer. It was like reading something printed verbatim, and this got annoying very quickly. I'm no english major, but whoever edited this book should re-edit and try again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Sixteen superbly organized and presented chapters
Specifically designed and written on an intermediate to advanced user level, The Definitive Guide To Windows Installer by Windows expert Phil Wilson fully lives up to the promise of its title. This informed and informative "how to" manual will enable users to create windows installer setups for all categories of .NET applications ranging from Windows Forms, to Services, to Web projects, including traditional COM applications. Sixteen superbly organized and presented "user friendly" chapters are devoted to every aspect of Windows Installers. Of special interest are that chapters specifically addressing "Updates Using Patches"; How-Tos, Tips, and Gotchas"; "Tools and Futures". The Definitive Guide To Windows Installer is a strongly recommended reference for both personal and professional Windows reference collections.

Begins by showing that a fundamental basic for networking programming is interprocess communication (IPC), and a requisite for understanding IPC is a knowledge of what constitutes a process. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read
This book must be by far one of the most valuable books I have ever read. I learned to love Unix/C programming from it and I have treasured the knowledge I have gained from it ever since. Mr.Stevens has passed away but this book holds some wonderful memories and discoveries for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic work - but in series need of updates as time goes on
I cannot fathom a guess as to how many times the books in this series have saved my in project work over the years. The only drawback with this series is that some publisher should endeavor to keep them up to date.Serious Unix system programmers must have copies of the complete series.

4-0 out of 5 stars The other cluster flavor
Clusters, like many things, come in various flavors. These can be roughly stated as `high throughput', `high performance (HPC)', and `high availability'. The "Linux Enterprise Cluster" is a good read for those looking for the `high-availability' cluster flavor, for perhaps a mission-critical computing resource. There is thus more emphasis on fail-over and service request handling than, for example, MPI, exacting operation calculations, and HSI maximizing techniques typical of HPC endeavors. This is not to say this book is not applicable to the other cluster types. Could you do with a chapter on SystemImager? How about Ganglia? Rsync & SSH? Building a kernel? All this step-by-step? Awesome! I was building an HPC cluster at the time, and found this a good book for drilling into deeper cluster software infrastructure details while at the park or waiting for a class to start. It was however sparse on hardware details and proper supporting infrastructure, but no book under 10 pounds is going to cover everything so be prepared to read a lot. I did not evaluate the included CD-ROM, which is loaded with goodies, because I simply downloaded the packages from the Internet as needed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Explanations and Recipies
If you want to build any HA cluster, this book is for you. The author has the ability to write from entry level to advanced Linux admin skillsets. His recipies for HA and LVS clusters are complete and realistic. We all know there are few Linux books we read from cover to cover. This is one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for small clusters
Karls book seems for me the perfect book for small clusters. He describes every single install and configuration aspect I could possible think of.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still good - years later
I write this review partially evaluating the information it contains, but also how it has held up over time. This book came out in late 2003 and it is now early 2006.A successor to Windows XP is already known, but that doesn't mean that Windows XP is on the way out or that companies will not just now be deploying that OS either for the first time, or redeploying as a refresh to encompass service packs, hotfixes and larger updated application suites, such as Microsoft Office. In short, a competent title covering the deployment of XP is still needed.
5-0 out of 5 stars The right tool for Desktop Deployment
If you are planning a massive desktop deployment than this is book you should use. I had no previous experience in doing an unattended install and this book walked me through the entire process following the distribution sample provided in Chapter 7.Mr. Honeycutt has left no stone unturned. His book gives you in-depth technical information and tools to deploy and manage Microsoft Windows XP Desktop. With it, you get prescriptive guidance to help choose the best deployment method and tools for common scenarios; perform attended and unattended installations; automate the deployment process, control policy and profile settings for desktop operating systems and applications; automate deployments for Office and other programs; and more. The book comes with a CDROM containing extra documentation, tools, sample templates, and scripts. Just add your Windows XP I386 files and half the battle is done. This is a great book and well written. Thanks Jerry for writing something for my simple mind!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Linux networking software book to start with
I have read a number of books on the TCP/IP protocols and their implementations; both the original Berkeley (BSD) Unix TCP/IP stack and the Linux TCP/IP stack.I must say that this is the best of all of them. This book makes the subject very approachable for the newcomer to network protocol software but the explanations are detailed enough to satisfy an old dog like me.Benvenuti's writing style is clear and very readable. He liberally provides diagrams to illustrate the concepts he is discussing.
5-0 out of 5 stars TAKE THE LINUX NETWORK TOUR!
Are you a newcomer who already has some knowledge of networking? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Christian Benvenuti, has done an outstanding job of writing practical guide that represents a good starting point for anyone willing to learn more about the Linux kernal internals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent writing style, comprehensive coverage
As a comprehensive Windows Server 2003 reference, there is no comparison as far as I'm concerned. Quality shines throughout the book and it is obviously the product of extensive research and lots of realworld experience. Stanek takes some pretty bland subject matter like DNS, Active Directory, and optimization and makes it understandable. This book made many things clearer for me, and I actually enjoyed reading it. Explanations are so much detailed that you can actually configure your system step by step by following the book. Also discusses the underlying technology in a detailed conceptual way, that gave me the overall understanding and insight of what really is going on. If you are trying to learn or working with Windows networks, this book is a must. The book never makes you confused, and virtually all aspects of networking are covered. You really cannot go wrong with this book it is well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I recently bought a copy of this book. I saw it on the desk of a colleague at work and decided to have a look. Itis really great and I also like the writing style of Stanek. My only regret isthat I didn't purchase it earlier. This would have saved me considerably time and effort in researching several administration problems that may crop up from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ONE STOP RESOURCE
I needed a comprehensive book on Windows Server 2003 and this is the one I picked after reading through all the others at the bookstore. Stanek has the most comprehensive coverage I've ever seen in a single book on security, filesystems/availability, Active Directory, and most anything else you'd want to know about Windows Server. I've been an admin for 12 years and there's things I learned that I'll admit I didn't even know Windows Server could do. As an example, this book has TWO performance monitoring and tuning chapters. These chapters cover remote monitoring, command-line monitoring, performance logging, etc. Chapter 19 covers both MBR and GPT disks as well as SANs, RAIDs. Chapter 20 covers everything you'd ever want to know about NTFS including hard links, data streams, journaling, reparse points, sparse files, disk quotas, etc. Chapter 22 is covers shadow copy from its internals to everything about how it works. Chapter 24 covers everything you need to know about IP addressing and subnetting. There are two chapters on DNS with everything from setup to troubleshooting. Some of the best coverage is on Active Directory. There's eight chapters and the 300 pages covers more than some other entire books on the subject. Get this book jump straight to Chapter 12 and keep reading until you get to Chapter 41. You'll learn a lifetime's worth of knowledge and get more expert advice than in any other book. Thank you Mr. Stanek for such an excellent book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info, but sloppy editing - much copied from Fedora Unleashed
I received 3 Ubuntu titles and thought it might be useful to compare them. Ubuntu is a fairly recent Linux distribution that strives to be usable out of the box, with strong support. It has deep pockets and a thriving community behind it. I admire a lot of the design choices that went into Ubuntu, such as limiting the use of the all-powerful root account, which can get people into trouble. The bare-bones server install is the cleanest Linux server I've seen - *no* open ports, minimal services. Just enough to log in at a console and then install what you want. On the other hand, if you want a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP - the most popular combination on the internet), that's a one button install! Brilliant!
5-0 out of 5 stars 800 pages of Ubuntu goodness
This massive tome has just about anything you'd ever want to know about Ubuntu, including information on using this distro as a desktop, server, web host, programming tool and much, much more.

Editorial Review

There's a reason that a large slice of the open-source movement has defected from running Linux on its laptops to running Mac OS X. The reason is the Unix core that underlies Mac OS X, and the development tools that run on that core. Cocoa makes it easy to create very slick Mac OS X interfaces for software (as well as to create applications in a hurry), and this new edition of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best UNIX programming book that I know of
What's more to say, the title say's it all...Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Coverage
This is an exceptional introduction to Unix features that most people won't see in every-day programming. The feature that Rochkind starts with may be the most problematic: portability. There have historically been dozens of Unices (sp?), all slightly different from each other. Even today, there are a number of different implementations in use, with small but maddening incompatibilities between them. Rochkind not only addresses the more common ones, he shows the standards-based ways of dealing with their differences.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just right
This book starts at the beginning, assumes very little, and takes you quickly to the essentials you need to know about unix. The text is clear but too verbose - you can actually finish this book, which I find important for programmers who want to get a sound introduction and then get to coding. The new edition is updated for modern unix-like systems. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author probably has great insight into the subject matter;unfortunately, he does not know how to convey his knoeledge to the reader. The practice test questions are ambiguous and full of errors. There was probably minimal editing of questions and answers; as a result, a reader has to correct the errors and then try to fully comprehend the explanations to the practice questions. It is an inefficient way to study and learn. Head First, despite its errata (it has corrections at its website), is a superior product. This textbook is not worth the headaches.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of errors
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good
I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP.However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion.I'm searching for an errata for the book now.(There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but problematic....
I just passed my 70-271 exam and I do believe this book was an important factor in my score. However this book is problematic.
2-0 out of 5 stars Don't use this book as a primary study guide
There's a lot of unnecessary info in this book that you won't even see on the exam. The practice questions in the book are way too wordy and confusing.Exam Cram has helped me in the past, but not this time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book, it's awful.
I believe my email to the editor explains it all.I have copied and pasted it below.
