Excellent Book
This book covers all the objectives of SCJP 5.0 and moreover in an excellent manner. What I liked most is that this book makes you well aware of what exactly is in the exam and what is not. For instance, the exam objectives include classes like String, DateFormat, File and so on. These classes contain a lot of methods. This book will tell you which you need to know for the exam. This saves a lot of time and effort. To conclude - don't think just buy it and success will follow!!! I passed my SCJP 5.0 with 93%.

Pretty good for those with experience
I used this book to help me pass the exam the first time. The book gives you a lot of helpful tips to write the test. The practice exams are really good. Each topic was covered fairly thoroughly in both tests. The book is definitely worth the money. Even though the book does go over the fundamentals, I don't think the book covers the fundamentals (OO design, Java Basics) well enough for a novice developer.

Excellent reference material.

Classic piece of work kept up to date!
The book evolved from its first edition and its definitely a mammoth task trying to keep in this edition what is relevant and what isn't but i think the authors did it :)
Very detailed, but well indexed reference
Everything you wanted to know (and probably didn't care to know) about linux.
Outstanding second edition of a computing classic
This badly needed update to the classic first edition preserves what is best about the old edition, which is the format and attention to detail, and adds the changes that have occurred to the UNIX operating system since the first edition was published back in 1992. Specifically, there are implementation samples for FreeBSD, Linus, and MAC OS X included. This edition is as the first one was, an excellent reference for anyone doing system level programming in C or C++ on the UNIX platform. It is was never intended to teach the reader the fundamentals of the UNIX environment nor to teach C/C++ programming. The author assumes a strongknowledge of both. The book begins much as the first edition did, by explaining the UNIX kernel in generic terms. It then goes on to explain the various implementations of UNIX and their specific differences. You will find chapters three through ten largely unchanged from the first edition, as the basic mechanisms of file I/O, directory structure, interprocess control, and signaling have not evolved since that time. Chapters eleven and twelve are two new added chapters on threads, asthreading has become very important in UNIX system programming. Also, gone is the chapter on interfacing to a postscript printer. It is replaced by a more modern chapter on communicating with a network printer. The HTTP protocol is discussed in this context. The book contains a rich set of examples and downloadable code that is very useful. In addition, the book contains the implementations of two large-scale projects: a database library and communication with a network printer. Each project includes complete code with schematics. This book also contains numerous exercises, and the solutions to some of those exercises are included in the back of the book. Since Amazon, and some reviewers, show the table of contents for the first edition but not the second, I include that here for the purpose of completeness:

Remarkably well written
This book is remarkably well written.It is wonderfully clear and precise.Topics are introduced in a logical order, with great care taken to build on previous concepts.This is a book that works well for beginners as well as for more experienced users, or as a refresher.There is enough explanation so that someone can grasp a new concept, and yet the explanation is sufficiently concise so that it doesn't slow down someone who already has some Unix/Linux skills and is simply reviewing.The book excels in every respect:chapter organization, sub-topic organization, and clear typographical conventions.But the biggest strength of the book is simply the clarity of the writing.

Very good book for the money. All commands are demistified and defined. Bash and C shells are discussed and demistified. This is a great book for anyone trying to learn LINUX.

Good book, It complements nicely DVD course
It is great book no questions here. I was listening to another reviewer's advice and paired it with "UNIX Essentials and UNIX Core" DVD and this thing works! The book elaborates on many subjects and the DVD gives the whole variety of prospectives on Linux and UNIX. I also liked the clear organization of this book. It takes one glance in the list to figure out what do you need and how to get it. It also helps to see how many things maybe accomplished by variety of ways to avoid mishaps. ... Read more

Good book for Linux kernel basics
This book presents the kernel basics in a lucid language with the necessary details, that both newbies and experienced kernel programmers can grasp. My favorite section is the one about the new 2.6 scheduler. A chapter on the open source community is also included towards the end.
Good help if you try to understand the Linux Kernel
This book describe how kernel works and how was designed, it do not shows lines of code just shows you the way you have to write code into the kernel, I think is helpful if you try to undertand or write Linux Kernel code.

Well written, but out of date
This book covers the linux 2.6 kernel, but does not apply to 2.6.15 (current kernel).Data structures for working with files have changed for example.If this book gets updated, it would be quite helpful.Its still a great starting place, but be prepaired to go through include files in the linux kernel source quite a bit.Since Linus lost the change logs for the kernel, its hard to compare notes on older kernels.

The Essential Perl Book
This book is _the_ book to get when you want to get serious about Perl.
Not my style of learning
The book is well edited and has obviously evloved since its first edition to meet the needs of its readers, based on their feedback.
Absolutely the best reference for programmers new to Perl
I am not new to programming, but was new to Perl when I took a job that required a ton of pattern matching based scripting. I immediately convinced my boss to buy a bunch of Perl books, including this one. Usually, I am the type to use Google more than any book when learning a new language, but this book has been indispensible. I go to it first anytime I want to know how to do something in Perl, and 9 times out of 10 it is the only resource I need. I agree with other reviewers that this is not the book for beginning programmers, but I could have saved my boss a lot of money had I just had her buy me this one. It's all I've needed. ... Good intro to Ubuntu the Linux Distro, GREAT intro to community
I received 3 Ubuntu titles and thought it might be useful to compare them.Ubuntu is a fairly recent Linux distribution that strives to be usable out of the box, with strong support.It has deep pockets and a thriving community behind it.I admire a lot of the design choices that went into Ubuntu, such as limiting the use of the all-powerful root account, which can get people into trouble.The bare-bones server install is the cleanest Linux server I've seen - *no* open ports, minimal services.Just enough to log in at a console and then install what you want.On the other hand, if you want a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP - the most popular combination on the internet), that's a one button install!Brilliant!
If Ubuntu sounds good, then this book is for you.
The Official Ubuntu Book, brought to you by a number of folks who actively write or document Ubuntu and is a great book for those looking to move from OSX or Windows to Ubuntu. If you're a novice or intermediate Ubuntu user then this book is for you. If you consider yourself an expert, you can still pick up a few things but most of what you'll find here, you'll already know.
Great Book- so stop apologizing!
This is a great place to start for anyone considering making the move to Ubuntu and open source software. Thr first chapter gives a quick recap of the what exactly "open source" software means including F/OSS, Free Open Source Software, and a bit of background on the Ubuntu project itself.Some might skip that chapter but since that was exactly some of the info I was looking for, it was very helpful. . .except, "stop apolozgizing for writing such a great book!"At least three if not four times in the first chapter, the phrase, "If you've made it this far. . . " or "If you are still reading this. . . " was used.Hey guys, you did a great job, no need to apologize.I mean why else would someone buy this book rather than download it for free? ;-)

a comprehensive widget set for C++
When C++ was first put together in the 80s, it was just before the advent of GUIs for many programs. But as Java arose in the 90s, and then C#, the need for easy UI coding in C++ became very clear. Hence Qt was developed. Now in its 4th version. And available for Microsoft Windows, linux, Macintosh and several unixes. The accompanying CD has version 4.1.1. Though by the time you get this book, you might want to scout the Web, either for patches to this version, or a more recent version.

Brilliant. A definitive work.
This is by far the most comprehensive, easy to understand book regarding Unix Network Programming I have come across.Professors in most major university treat teaching unix network programming like brain surgery, they make it as difficult as possible.The book explain every concept inan easy to understand language, TCP, UDP,SCTP, etc, you name it is all here.There is so much to learn from this book for all users novice and advanced and it also makes an excellent reference book. Every unix network programmer should have this book by their side, this is the unix networking programming bible.Like we say in wall street, a great investment, highly recommended.

I was required to use this book for my networking programming class.I'm in my senior year of college and having quite a bit of experience with textbook, I can say with confidence that this is one of the better textbooks out there.You can definately teach yourself network programming with this book and the accompanied source examples.... makes a handy reference guide as well. Worth the investment for Computer Science Engineers.

Excellent, but not for beginners
Understanding the Linux Kernel is an excellent guide for those who have some experience using Linux, and would like to know what's going on under the hood. It's a comprehensive guide that not only describes how Linux boots and initializes itself, and how programs call functions inside the kernel, but actually goes down to the murky depths of interrupts, process switching, inter-process communication, and even memory management down to the level of the 80x86 processor instructions, registers and features (actually if you add it all up, memory management takes up most of the book -- a good thing!). Furthermore there are chapters about essentials such as file systems and device drivers.
VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Are you curious about how Linux works and why it is so efficient? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Daniel Plerre Bovet and Marco Cesati, have done an outstanding job of writing a practical book that will help you find your way through the many thousands of lines of code.

Okay
I would say this is a pretty good book that covers it's subject very well, buti didn't use it much because i had also bought Unix in a Nutshell, Fourth Edition, which covered the basics and differences between the shells briefly, which was all i needed at the time. but i looked through this and read some stuff that helped and it is a good book if you plan on doing extended shell scripting. it was just a little more than i actually needed

Practical and useful
Great book. The emphasis is nicely split between actually using the shell itself and the whole supporting cast of unix tools (sed, awk, cut, join, sort etc.) The idea of carefully crafting solutions using the unix toolbox mindset is key. I also like the fact he doesn't try to teach to multiple shells, but first tries to emphasize portability by sticking mainly to a POSIX standard, and only later adds info about non standard shell topics. If I could only have one book on shell scripting, this would be it. The best description is 'Practical'.

Good exam preparation support!
I used this book in addition to RedHat's instructor led training, and managed to pass the test on my first try with a score of over 90%!

A great book for the RHEL 3 exam
Having been in a management position for a while I was a bit rusty and felt I didn't have the current hands on experience required to sit this exam directly.I used this book as prep for the 4 day Red Hat Boot camp leading up to the RHCE exam.It covered the topics required for the exam quite well, despite some obvious typos (Whatever you read, you should read critically anyway. IMHO)
Great Exam Prep
I wish I could say I had finished the book and passed the RHCE, but I am still a month or two away. Still, I have advanced my Linux knowledge significantly and am having a blast. Of the 6 or so Linux books I own, this is the best and should have been the first. An excellent reference for System Administrators
Power UNIX and Linux users will want to expand their skills. It's inevitable. Some will get frustrated and drop out and some will work their way through it.
Great reference, full of examples, for all UNIX/Linux/BSD users
At first glance, this book seems like a typical O'Reilly book: a narrow title, rich in material, and is beneficial to a much wider audience than the title reveals. It covers a wide range of system administration subjects and goes way beyond just the essentials.

This book is for the reader that wants to move beyond the basic, high level overview Unix book and truly understand the Unix system and why it invokes passion from it's fan base. This book could be used by the beginning user, but the novice or casual reader may find this book overwhelming in the sheer level of information it provides. Book is kind of outdated
Book is based on 2.4 kernel. Since we are currently at 2.6 kernel this book does seem to have outdated information

Good guide
It would be a good guide to a person to prepare for a project to develop embedded linux system.It gives you the information what is necessar, what is work well and how to get them. Butyou should have some experience on linux language.
disappointed
I read this book in about 2 hours and the contents really disappoint me.I expected the book to discuss in details of the issues related to embedded linux.And to a degree, this book is like a dictionary of all the terms you might encounter during the development and only a few direct examples.And given how fast the Linux kernel, open source packages evolve over time, the examples given in this book is totally outdated.

This is the ONLY way to learn Sed and Awk
If you want to move from a beginning unix user to a unix power user/shell scripter, you MUST learn sed.I can't count how many install scripts/build scripts/startup scripts/etc. rely on this simple tool.Although sed and awk do seem to naturally complement each other, I tend to view awk as sort of a stripped-down perl (in all fairness, it did come before perl, so perl is a "souped-up awk").That's not to say that awk isn't useful; I constantly find myself using dirt-simple awk scripts to answer questions like, "which hosts are connected on port 80 and how many connections are they holding open right now?"(answer: netstat -nt | awk '{split($4,dst,":");split($5,src,":");if(dst[2] == "80") print src[1]}' | sort | uniq -c).Awk is always there, it's tiny and it's fast.
the best desktop reference
Some good reviews on here -- my only additon is that this book has been the best desktop reference for me. I am constantly referring back to it to answer questions. A MUST HAVE for any novice/intermediate user.

Excellent!
Sed and awk are, as the book adequately puts it, UNIX "powertools". Sed is quite handy and awk is even better. This book presents a breathtaking introduction to both of them, and yet still delves into the more advanced details as it constantly presents exciting and useful examples. Classic work - but in series need of updates as time goes on
I cannot fathom a guess as to how many times the books in this series have saved my in project work over the years.The only drawback with this series is that some publisher should endeavor to keep them up to date.Serious Unix system programmers must have copies of the complete series.

The real power of UNIX is in communication
The real power of UNIX or any application for that matter is in interprocess communication. I found early on that to accomplish any large project would require the cooperation of interprocess communication. Now I find that simple administration skills also require knowledge of this interprocess communication.

Not a reference but a walk though book
I didn't find this book useful for finding what I'm looking for fast. Commands and Linux Topics are scattered about the book in different section. The directory and index had little use for finding what I'm looking for, a quick web search turned up faster focused results. This book touches the surface in order to get a novice going but thats about it.

linux informative
This is a good book for the linux "newbie" or someone who is famaliar with other flavors of linux and want to brush up on this new version of Fedora.The book gets really in depth but I realized that everything I was looking for was already self explanatory on the desktop.The core linux command line stuff isn't there but you should buy a book that contains that information before tackling a server build first anyway.
Unleashed books still the best!
just wanted to say how impressed I have been with the Unleashed series of books, I worked on an old Linux unleashed book years ago and lately I have been training SuSE and RedHat courses for a Novell platinum partner training company in South Africa, I have tried other books like the SuSE bible and have not been very satisfied since they are not comprehensive enough. I bought your book on Fedora 4 unleashed the other day and am pleased to say that it is still the same quality, easy to read and very comprehensive, that is why
