3-0 out of 5 stars Good things, bad things...
Good:
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too much fluff...
I've been a Server OS administrator since 1991, starting with Novell 3.12. I started with OS2, Novell and then Windows NT in 1995 at the second largest retailer in the US and I've worked my way through NT 3.5 to 2003. I bought Minasi's NT 4.0 books and thought they were the greatest thing going, but I was still green and the other publishers were not up to speed. Now I own the Windows Server 2003 books Inside Out, Unleashed and Administrators Companion. I have read much of Minasi's 2003 book, but I doubt I'll buy it. I have to say that Minasi's writing style now forces serious administrators to waste a great deal of time wading through the fluff. His book is one of, if not the thickest and it's not because of the technical information. Just like his articles in magazine publications, his writing is oriented towards new or amateur administrators. I think if you have 2 of, or the 3 books I mentioned previously, you can skip Minasi's Server 2003 book. The single area where Mark has an edge over the other books is his discussion of compatibility with older, downlevel or non-MS workstation client OSes such as DOS, Mac, Workstation, etc. This same information was covered in his earlier NT 4.0 and Win2000 books, so if you have any of them, you're ok there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A response to Joaquin Menchaca from an Apple Certified Tech Coordinator
You know, there are times I despair at the treatment of Macintoshes in Windows-centric books. Obsolete information, badly written explanations of Mac technology, and general "macs can't do that" comments. I'll flip through Windows books at the store and shudder at the nonsense they spread about Macs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Road Map
I would highly recommend this book to anyone, like myself, that is looking to move towards more agile approaches to software development.Obviously, Agile has its place, as other methodologies have their place. This book has allowed me to refine my approach to a significant effort that hopefully will help our transition from a rigid waterall approach to a more flexible adaptive approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Your Resource for Agile Planning
Recently someone asked me if I knew of any trainers in agile estimation techniques in my geographical area.I strongly recommended that he engage Mike Cohn and if Mike were unavalable to purchase a copy of this excellent book.I had the fortune of being an early reviewer of the book, and am not disappointed in the final product. If the book Planning eXtreme Programming was the skeleton, this book is the meat that provides excellent coverage of the following:
5-0 out of 5 stars Another Cohn gem!A must read if you are having trouble understanding agile projects.
Mike Cohn is establishing himself as THE author to answer the most pressing questions facing the agile practioner. He follows up his widely popular book on user stories by addressing the next most vexing challenge: planning and estimation. While many were focused on advocating a specific agile method or vilifying them all, Mike focused on what was happening on real projects. The result described in this book is an elegant blend that embodies the intent of all the agile gurus in a straight forward, pratical set of practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book to get you up to speed in no time!
At first, I was a little apprehensive about the book - I was thinking it was a repackaged 'Teach Yourself in 5 seconds a day' kind of thing where you end up flying throughout through the content without really learning anything. I needed to actually learn this topic and I needed to do it quickly - I bought this book on a Monday and had a MAJOR project for my Database Systems class due Friday night at midnight.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book delivers exactly what it promises
As a beginner in the PHP & MySQL world, this book provided everything I needed to go from nothing to a fully functioning dynamic site within days.Great examples, and most importantly he covers security concerns as well as best-practices for keeping everything running smooth.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Learning PHP
As a whole, the Visual Quickstart and QuickPro guides are a great series, and this title - now in its second edition - is no exception.

It is a mandatory book for any J2EE developer. Dont even write a single line of J2EE code without reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't put it down
This book is a good read. I simply cannot put it down, with clear explanations and with code to realize, its really good and it excites the developer's imagination.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and practical techniques for designing web solution
Concepts of Presentation, Business and Integration Tiers are nowadays so popular among all technical designs in framework and web architecture levels, upon the promotion of diversity of responsibilities, low coupling and high cohesion between each layers. This book would be the 'bible' of mastering such technology before ongoing development. Nevertheless, it's useful for implementing projects using any skillsets, even not related to Java. Editorial Review

Regular expressions are a central element of UNIX utilities like egrep and programming languages such as Perl. But whether you're a UNIX user or not, you can benefit from a better understanding of regular expressions since they work with applications ranging from validating data-entry fields to manipulating information in multimegabyte text files. 4-0 out of 5 stars Best Title on the Subject
If you have ever been frustrated trying to figure out Regular Expressions (RegEx) based only on a table showing symbols and a few paragraphs of explanations obviously written by someone who assumes you are already familiar with the concept, then this book is for you.Don't be daunted by 480+ page size of this title; before you reach the end of chapter 2 you find yourself with a solid understanding of the concepts, structure, syntax and "keywords" in common use by those utilities, programming languages and applications that incorporate RegExs.The middle of the book covers implementation of RegEx in different environments, techniques for creating the expressions, and methods for creating efficient expressions. The end chapters are specific for Perl, Java, VB.NET and PHP users.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough Regex book
This book is an invaluable resource. I learned more than I wanted to know about regex after reading this book. The authors breaks things down to the smallest detail and discusses each aspect. He covers regular expressions, their engines, their use, and some tips and tricks without losing the reader.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Regular Expressions
I've corresponded personally with Jeffrey Friedl several times over the last few years, and I remember being at once impressed with his attention to detail and his focus. I was invited to be one of the technical review editors for this third edition of his authoritative book on Regular Expressions, but had to pass due to time constraints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best handbook for programmers EVER!
The authors were very modest in choosing their title.Yes, indeed, they focus on the scenario of writing reusable libraries, and write from the perspective of two of the designers of the .NET Framework. However, the utility of this book goes far beyond what the title implies.
5-0 out of 5 stars invaluable to developers of class libraries, components, and frameworks--whether .NET or not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect but a definite must read.
I had heard a lot of positive talk about this book, so I picked it up based on that...only to find I could read it online later. The book contains exceptional in-depth information about the Java language. The writing is conversational which makes it fairly easy to read. It is less a reference book as it is written to help you understand how Java was intended to be used. It is a definite read for anyone working with Java for the long haul. If you are coming from the C++ world, there are good comparisons and contracts between C++ and Java as well. The only down side, some of the examples do get a bit long winded. A clean up in this area would have helped the book tremendously.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Tutorial on Java
The 4th edition is updated to reflect changes to Java for J2SE 5/6.The content is easy to follow and contains insights on the use of the language's features and library. You will even find some critique of the language features which may be helpful when doing large software projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars The best.
I'll make this short. I depend a LOT on buyer reviews on Amazon to help me decide what to get. This book is the best book on Java, taking the reader from the basics right up to the sexy stuff in J2SE5 like queues and generics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ready reckoner for the softer side of project management
This book is more than 400 pages of good, practical advice for project managers. Since 'art' is always a specific solution, as opposed to the generic formula based science, the value of this book will depend on the extent of experience a person has, the kind of project she is managing (hopefully IT) & the realm of her responsibilities.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for Architects Too
Solid practical advice on how to manage and control the chaos that is inherent in software development. Get this book if you're an architect or developer and you have to deal with incompetent PMs. It'll help you manage the manager!

1-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, Bad textbook
This is actually a very good book to read - what they cover, they cover in depth, building each concept up from elementary concepts so you can always see how they got from point A to point B.The authors present mathematical proofs of essentially every assertion (although, as is typical of "discrete math" proofs, the proofs can sometimes be a tad on the silly side as they sometimes just restate whatever they're trying to prove - blame academia). The algorithms are all presented in a language-agnostic pseudocode which highlights the essentials of the algorithm itself without burdening the reader with language idiosyncracies.Plus, if you want something more concrete, the latest edition comes with a CD-ROM including all the algorithms implemented in Java!
4-0 out of 5 stars A great reference
This book is not for the casual reader. If the contents seems confusing at times it is because there are hard problems being analyzed.Any book on algorithms that is not confusing at times is probably not discussing any interesting algorithms. While quite academic, this book is also relevant to any engineer who needs to design/optimize a non-trivial algorithm. It's also one of those books that one can open up to any random page and start reading.Sometimes when I get coders-block, this is just the thing to break me out of it.This book is heavy, expensive and well worth its weight and price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
This is an excellent book. Well written, easy to understand, precise, good problems, excellent coverage of the basics. This book can provide an excellent foundation in computer science.

Very good title, well structured and current.Assisted with our implementation process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with cool tips and tricks
This is a great book that puts you well on your way to success with understanding and working with MSCRM 3.0. The chapters on Callouts and workflow and the examples using the client side SDK and the server side SDK really helped me in making my MSCRM implementations very successful and gave me a complete picture of all the extensions points available in this version of MSCRM. I would highly recommend this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as one would hope...
This book is a fantastic resource for programmers and process engineers alike - however from the perspective of a manager assessing the capabilities of CRM 3.0 for their organization, I found this book to be commercially irrelevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb
I am a huge ADO.NET nut and David's first book was absolutely priceless. After his last book, he set a very high bar that was going to be hard to meet, yet that's exactly what he did.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not as good as his former book
I was just a tad bit disappointed because his former book was so helpful to me. Still a lot of users who develop windows form applications use Access, but I see the big push to make everything SQL server. Though I like SQL Server, but in most small apps for what I do it is highly unnecessary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good material but not enough coverage
This book covers the fundamentals of project management but lacks details. It also lacks simplicity and consistency. The Critical path example discussed on p. 132 to 134 is confounding (especially the part explaining the difference between free and total slack). SQL Server Reporting Services is a comprehensive, server-based reporting solution which provides support to develop, manage, and deliver reports on different mediums and platforms. 5-0 out of 5 stars This One Gets Used
I have been using Perl for many years and consider myself an advanced user. I own well over a dozen Perl books (8 published by O'Reilly), and this is the one that continually gets cracked open (it has tape on the spine -- always a good sign). The book is a little more accessible than the Programming Perl book, and it covers tons of various solutions. It's a valuable addition to the toolbox.
