4-0 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML
This is a good book for moderate to experienced computer users with programming experience. The code snipets are helpful to illustrate the topic, but a less experienced person could easily get confused.

5-0 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide, Fifth Edition
I am getting ready to build my own website and this book has helped immensely and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to introduce them to the language of HTML.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start
I first read this years ago when I was first learning HTML and had no developement experience. It was a great way to start off, easy reading and easy to look up information I needed.I still look things up when I need a quick refresher for a web page alteration. Not the book for someone looking for advanced knowledge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The First VSTS Book You Should Read
This book is a terrific high to mid level introduction to Visual Studio Team System, Microsoft Solutions Framework, and the overall philosophies and strategies behind Microsoft's ambitious undertaking. It provides terrific VSTS coverage, but it's also one the best overviews of modern software development approaches available today.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Gives a nice peek into the "why" as opposed to the "how". I have read all the VSTS books that are out there right now and I appriciated this one very much. It was an easy read, but very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of theory and practices
This book provides wealth of theory and practices for software development. It throughly explained the ideas behind Visual Studio Team Studio, just like the author said, it's not a how-to book, but will let you know why VSTS provides those functionalities, and what benefit would you get if you follow the practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Murach's Visual Basic 2005
I like the layout of this book. Each topic is explained in detail using paired pages with the first page of the pair containing the detail and the second page of the pair containing a summary of key points. There are also a number of benchmark projects that demonstrate the concepts that have been covered.I was particularly impressed with level of detail contained in the chapters on Database Programming and Object-Oriented programming.I would particularly recommend this book for beginning to intermediate level developers.I look forward to reading other books by this publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Training and Reference Book!
This book should be required reading for any application developer using Visual Basic. The layout of syntax, guidelines, and examples on one page with explanations on a matching page provide an easy and quick reference to information. The "paired pages" format: How-to on the left page and examples on the right makes this a great reference book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Easy Format to Use
Murach's has developed a winning template for developing Training and Reference books, and Visual Basic 2005 is no exception. A great feature is the placement of diagrams and illustrations are always found on the page facing the illustration, making it easier to follow the instructions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain
It's a book very interested about language in mind and speech comprehension. I read a short comment in BBC Focus magazine and I wish to read because it's very easy to learn the misteries of mind in cognitive science applied to language and psichology.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun book
It is not a typical "hacks" book in that it does not tell you how to utilize you brain more effectively or do neat things. It *does*have a lot of exercises that show you cool things on how your brain works with sections describing how your brain works - and a number of experiments (blind spot, Magnet interaction with the brain, word parsing in the the mind, and so on). This book goes very well with a recent title called _Mind Wide Open_ by Steven Johnson.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting reading
I found this book to be interesting in the way that it presents it's topics. It was insightful and worth the purchase. It is the type of book that you select chapters that interest you as opposed to going cover to cover. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable, practical advice.
A more accurate title for this book would have been "Unit Testing and Refactoring is How To Work Effectively with Legacy Code"
5-0 out of 5 stars Code without tests is legacy code.
This book is basically a comprehensive overview of how to get your legacy code into a proper test harness by breaking dependencies (given various limitations of legacy systems).I can't think of any better way to frighten your colleagues into beginning TDD than reading this book.Plain and simple...are you writing code without tests (i.e. are you writing legacy code)? If you've ever worked or expect to work with legacy systems (which should be a majority of us)...then you need this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ian Sommerville's Software Engineering
A great introductory book on software engineering. It gives you a holistic view of software engineering, but lacks in details. It won't teach you how to draw ER diagrams but it will tell you what they are.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction and explanation of software engineering
Overview of Software Engineering, with a brief explanation of software process and project management. It mainly covers the design issue and introduces the method of handling critical system.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rather Cursory
Sommerville undoubtedly owns great knowledge over the topic. Unfortunately he has difficulties to write monolithicly. Most of the time he is beating around the bush. The examples he uses to explain the different topics are rather unusual and do not help to better understand what the techniques are all about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is a good book
Is a nice book, it hasn't got many advanced stuff like backups or problems solutions but is a good book for people just become a middle or new postgresql user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive coverage
This is the only PostgreSQL book that I know of that covers writing functions and triggers in PL/pgSQL with any level of detail. There is also a very detailed section on performace monitoring and tuning.Overall, the best book you can get on PostgreSQL administration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginners
This is a great way to get started with postgreSQL or for learning databases in general. Each sentence actually makes sense and doesn't require referencing other texts like so many other technical books. The book is very thorough so don't let the size intimidate you.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in starting their own database project. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Closing the communication gap...
Facilitating communication among businesspeople and software developers in the preparation of acceptance tests is the mail goal of Fit, which also helps automate those tests. A tabular representation of tests provides the common language whose clarity and precision are key to improving communication between technical and non-technical people. As Dave Thomas says, Fit helps closing the "gap between the software that [is] written and the software the user [wants]".
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, not exactly great.
The first 175 pages of the book seem devoted to convincing management that the tool is worth using. The next 75 or so pages give details on writing tests. There are about 45 pages of the programmer's perspective. The rest of the book mainly deals with extending the system in ways that most people won't bother with. Finally there is a very brief word on non-Java tests that simply says to refer to the web sites.
3-0 out of 5 stars Better structured than the online docu
The book describes in detail how to use Fitnesse for the combination of requirements management and automated testing. Though this is interesting, the book does not offer more information than the online docu to fitnesse (though certainly in a better structured way, as the structure of the online docu is a nightmare).

3-0 out of 5 stars ...
As the author states in the introduction you need to read the book in a comfortable chair with a laptop+net connection, you cant read this without a keyboard with in arms reach.I expected the examples to be in pseudo code or at a less hard core level of C, if your programming is not top notch be carefull.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is class. Really great and the author is a gentleman. Also check out the online forums dedicate to this book at AI Junkie. There the author himself chips in with helpul advice for AI novices and stalwards alike. I have his other book too and it is also five stars.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for Game AI
I'm an expirianced programmer and always wondered how things worked in a game. How the "enemy" knows how to move etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as "Complete" as I hoped
I was really wanting something that would show a step by step guide to building a USB device (even if all it did was turn on and off an LED) but this book doesn't really show how to actually BUILD anything. It's more about the principles/standars for USB from both the hardware and software side, and some examples on how to connect to and use an HID USB device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
This book really explains USB in detail, and Jan Axelson seems to really know what he is talking about.I am impressed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not "Everything You Need"...
My use of the book was primarily as a second opinion, against which I could check my interpretations of the USBv2.0 specification. In a few instances, this was very useful (i.e., clarifying exactly what is meant by the terms transaction, packet, handshake, etc.).

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a little bit disappointed
I bought this book about 5-6 months ago mostly because I needed some help with texturing, material, and making my own UV maps specifically for Poser 6. After I read all the reviews on this book I was convinced that this could be THE book that shows you how you can make your own maps. I mean what else can you teach in a book written for "intermediate to advanced users" anyway, right? Well, not really. The first couple of chapters are awesome. Although I knew a lot about those basic functions, I still learned couple of neat tricks from the book. However, chapters on Material, Textures, and UV maps are just short overview of these topics. She keeps referring you to the reference manual, which is...you know how it is...My suggestion is that don't buy this book if you're looking for a source on Materials and UV maps...There are other books out there such as Summer's Texturing: Concepts and Techniques that explain the subject in detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Poser 6 recomended
I've been the art business at a professional level for a long time .I am however new to 3D appplications and I have assembled quiet a library to educate myself in this area. Practical Poser 6 has made learning this wonderfull program a joy. It doesn't overcomplicate but in clear logical terms explains just exactly how to apply the many processes the program has available right down to where to find up to date plugins and also helps narrow the large array of content providers by listing many of them, what they do a nd how long they have been doing it. A must have for any poser 6 user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Throw the Poser manual to the trash!!!
I read the whole manual that comes with Poser 6. It is a mess!!!Practical Poser is the book that should come with Poser. It is so easy to read, although you have to read a lot but, at the end, it is worth all the time spent with it. It is a step by step, avoid all the mistakes, instructional guide. I recomend it. Two thumbs up!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book for Those Wishing to Work With ASP.NET and C#
I have been a professional web developer for the past 8 years working for a boutique web development shop. While we have done a decent bit of classic ASP over the years, prior to 2006 we have not jumped aggressively on the .NET bandwagon. The advent of ASP.NET 2.0 and the growing din of client requests has changed that and we are now focusing on .NET development.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Behemoth
This book is choc-full of useful material on ASP.net. A monster
3-0 out of 5 stars Probably my last Apress Book
I've just about had it with Apress books such as this one.The text shows the code for the various examples, but often the code is just a snippet, or it's incomplete, or it has errors. And you don't find this out unless you download the book's code from Apress.com.If you're like me and like to work the examples out on your own as you read, the whole process becomes very aggravating.I think I'll switch back to books from O'Reilly. With O'Reilly books, the authors present a complete, working version of the code on the page. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction
I had never used matlab when I started reading this book and I found it very easy to follow.I now have a good working understanding of the matlab basics and I recommend that anyone who's looking to get started with matlab pick up a copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introductory text for MATLAB
If you are completely new to MATLAB then you will find no better book to guide you through the basics. It is perfectly suited for teaching yourself several basic but still very interesting and useful programming techniques.Topics are presented to the reader in an order carefully determined to produce maximum benefit and knowledge. The book is short and very readable, with many example programs.
5-0 out of 5 stars A truly excellent text!
This book was written for teaching Matlab to freshmen in an introductory engineering course, so most of the examples are from first year physics and engineering.Nevertheless, after looking at all competing texts, I chose it to teach Matlab to sophomore geology majors, most of whom had not yet taken calculus or physics.I was very happy with the results; by the end of the semester the students were well on their way to being competent programmers, and I think they will find calculus and physics much easier because of their experience with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars McConnell's high level approach to Project Management remains valuable even today. Be sure to read McConnell's recent texts.
The Software Project Survival Guide [Steve McConnell] remains applicable today as when first published in 1995. McConnell has a clear knack for combining research, experience, and theory. His writing style is clear, concise, and easy to understand (introduction level programmer through to management).
5-0 out of 5 stars Software leads need this book
Software Project Survival Guide is one of the best books I've ever read about leading a software project. The author is not trying to sell any specific process or methedology, instead the book is full of down-to-earth practical advice about software development. If you are a software lead, new or old timer, read this book. If you are a software manager, buy a copy of this book for every one of your leads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Common sense approach for all projects
Most of us have been involved with software projects that we would just as soon forget--or at least run away from screaming. If you want to learn how software projects should be run, or how to run one correctly yourself, then Steve McConnell presents a straightforward, common-sense approach that can be applied to all types of projects. Facing the new year with numerous relatively small projects that I felt were out of control, I resolved to take action. I believed that my planning tasks were unlikely to tax the abilities of Project 2003, and was not really interested in knowing every detail of the software. I picked up this book, and was able to read the sections of interest--about 75% of the content--on a flight from Atlanta to San Jose. I was not disappointed. By the evening of January 10, my three most pressing projects were organized, resources were assigned, and realistic finish dates had been determined. The book gave me the information I needed to get results without false starts. While the attempts at folksy humor can be a tad annoying, the prose is generally clear and understandable. I doubt this is the book for you if you are managing a major project with dozens of people. However, if your projects are jobs like press releases, webinars, and minor software releases, you will likely be well served by it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Recommend The New Game Maker Book To Everyone In Even Slight Interest
"The Game Maker's Apprentice" was the greatest book I've ever read. Not Kidding. I read the entire book in 2 and 1/2 days. I even skipped dinner the first day. The Game Maker's Apprentice comes with a CD-rom including all of the resources and finished games mentioned in the book and games that show step-by-step how to program it. I recommend it to ANYONE who is interested in the Computer Gaming or Video Gaming field. Not only does the book teach you how to program 9 great games and show you how all of the steps of game creation can be fun, but it also has 3 chapters specifically based on extending your games with tips by professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for learning game oriented programming.
This book is an excellent resource for learning the fundamentals of game programming and the logic necessary to be successful at it. The book is well written, easy to follow and understand. The tutorials are fun and the games you create, while relatively simple, are quite enjoyable. The 3 or so chapters on game development are also sound and offer some excellent insight into making a good game. The Game Maker software included with the book, with it's built in programming language, is surprisingly powerful and intuitive. Additionally, Game Maker has a very strong on-line presence and has an extremely active forum for asking questions that aren't covered, or are beyond the scope of the book. (And it's all free too!!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for Game Maker 6.1 software
Easy to follow color book for beginners, you make a game in no timeand come with cd-rom with all the resources to built the games.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Pragmatic RUP Introduction
There is plenty of theory written about RUP, but how it should be applied to your role or your project is often misunderstood.
5-0 out of 5 stars You need this book if you're doing RUP
This book does a great job of showing steps of practical application of the RUP.The book may seem repetitive on a few points, but I feel the points bear repeating. This book has been invaluable in helping cut through the misinformation thrown around by some who have gotten the executive summary of RUP and know just enough to be dangerous. I recently completed a seven-part online course on the RUP that was based on this book. The book did a far better job of making the RUP understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to understand RUP
I teach RUP classes in Brazil and the most difficult thing for the students is to understand the core practices of RUP(what I like to call Agile RUP) without getting swallowed by all the details of the hundreds activities, artifacts, roles, guidelines, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars The new way to develop J2EE enterprise applications.
The latest and greatest about designing and building J2EE based enterprise applications is all within this book. The Spring Framework is a perfect compliment to strong object oriented design principles and techniques that should be leveraged for any J2EE solution. This book discusses both the strengths and weaknesses to the old EJB framework and talks about why Spring Framework is a good alternative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro and tutorial
This book covers most of the major topics in Spring. I used it to get started with Spring and to teach others. I like the comparisons they draw between Spring and J2EE. The book does a great job of introducing IoC an then moves into more complex/interesting topics.
2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy by and large
Some chapters (the basic Spring) are ok (even good.) Many advanced topics are covered in a sloppy manner. Further the editing is generally bad. I must say that I have read a finely edited book by Manning, namely Hibernate In Action. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unique is not best, but best in it's class
This is not the best hands-on, how-to book about designing your ownUnreal Tournament mod but it is the only book available. Thus, like the first Gutenberg printing press, it's the best in it's class! In the tutorials the authors assume that you already know as much about the Unreal Editor as they do. If you do not know the in's and out's and idiotsyncrasies of the Unreal Editor(which is why I bought the book in the first place) you will learn new definitions of patience during the first 23 chapters. In the end you will thank the authors for their altruism and capatalistic guile without which this knowledge would not be publicly available. Thank G-d and the great Satan for freedom of information! Thank America for the freedom to say this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I was brand new to all aspects of game design, and I had no idea where to start. So I opened up the book preview in the Unreal Tournament folder and saw this book.I went up to borders and bought it a week later.I've had this book for almost 3 weeks now, and Holy Crap! From the start, it explains the history of the Unreal engine and gives you a close up look of all the tools used.It has in-depth tutorials that make designing your first map a breeze. The CD contained in the book also has the May 5 Personal Learning Edition on it.In fact, the CD is my only complaint. This book expects you to use the CD for every texture and static mesh used.Overall, the book is a must buy for any begginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unreal Mapping.
This book is the best and only one book published in Unreal technology nobody beat this tutorial book for mapping in Unreal tournament 2004 I recommend this thick book to anyone wanting to master the Unreal editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the ONLY way to learn Sed and Awk
If you want to move from a beginning unix user to a unix power user/shell scripter, you MUST learn sed.I can't count how many install scripts/build scripts/startup scripts/etc. rely on this simple tool.Although sed and awk do seem to naturally complement each other, I tend to view awk as sort of a stripped-down perl (in all fairness, it did come before perl, so perl is a "souped-up awk").That's not to say that awk isn't useful; I constantly find myself using dirt-simple awk scripts to answer questions like, "which hosts are connected on port 80 and how many connections are they holding open right now?"(answer: netstat -nt | awk '{split($4,dst,":");split($5,src,":");if(dst[2] == "80") print src[1]}' | sort | uniq -c).Awk is always there, it's tiny and it's fast.
5-0 out of 5 stars the best desktop reference
Some good reviews on here -- my only additon is that this book has been the best desktop reference for me. I am constantly referring back to it to answer questions. A MUST HAVE for any novice/intermediate user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Sed and awk are, as the book adequately puts it, UNIX "powertools". Sed is quite handy and awk is even better. This book presents a breathtaking introduction to both of them, and yet still delves into the more advanced details as it constantly presents exciting and useful examples. Both sed and awk are an essential part of any UNIX operating system, and both echo with the prestige of the master programmers that designed them. Well done, Mr. Dougherty! ... Read more
