5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone involved in website creation
An infinitely quotable book which takes you through the fundaments of designing websites that customers will find easy to use.Easy to use websites of course being successful websites.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All
I've read a lot on usability, and this is the single-best source I've seen. Every site designer and developer has to read this book. In fact, everyone on the decision food chain in your organization at least needs to be aware of what Krug teaches us. I will forever use usability testing often and early in the process now. Remember, it doesn't matter how cool your application or website is--if people can't use it, they will get frustrated and leave. Please--give us all a better experience!

5-0 out of 5 stars definitely not a waste of paper :-)
This is a wise book, intentionaly kept small to be qucikly digestible. Very cleanly and simply the author describes where are the problems customers/users encounter while browsing the web, and how web contents designers should avoid making users think (more than absolutely necessary) while trying to do something on one's pages (look for/report/buy/pay/etc). The best book I have read in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast and painless way to learn Design Patterns
This is the first book of the Head First series that I've read, and I have to say that I love it! I think their teaching approach is very very efficient. Each concept is presented to you in many different ways and at the end your brain finds its way to metabolize it. Sometimes it's a picture that catch your attention, sometimes it's just a joke but at the end the concept sticks in your head and is gonna be there forever (at least I hope so :-))) ). Moreover this book is so easy to read. I recommend it to anybody that wants to learn Design Patterns (in Java) in a painless and fast way.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun way to learn Patterns
Patterns are boring. This book makes them fun. How they did it, I'll never know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Number one!!!
So far i bought about 30 computer books from amazon. This is the BEST!!!!!! First book that explains something real good but doesn't assume that you (the reader) actualy understood it so they re-explain it and attack the problem from a deferent point of view. I bought steven mezger's design patterns with c# book and read it cover to cover. It doesn't even come close to this piece of art although this is wrriten for java programers. I read "decorator" pattern in mezger's book more than 5 times and didn't actualy understand it. First time i read it in this book and i feel like a design patterns master! I'm thinking a lot about their teaching style. Its briliant! If you realy want to understand design patterns even if you are a c# or c++ programmer, By this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great web design book
This book is an analisys from a designer's point of view of the cssZenGarden.com project, which is a beautiful project on itself.
4-0 out of 5 stars Css is not only about limits
As the web developer in our company I often hear our graphical designers asking me what IS possible with CSS. Well this book gives you a good idea. It is not really about learning CSS but at least it gives a good idea about all the possibilities. Each time I get stuck in the limits of CSS, I get back to this book.....

3-0 out of 5 stars MUCH More Design than CSS
If you are a programmer that knows nothing about graphic design, this book is pretty nice.It is about 70% focused on how to do graphic design, and about %30 about CSS.Otherwise, if you want to learn CSS this isnt the best book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Look At PHP Programming
'Programming PHP' by Kevin Tatroe is a solid look at this popular open source solution for generating dynamic web pages.Competing against the money solutions ASP and JSP, PHP will give you the same kind of functionality, but at a much lower price!Packed with over 500 pages of PHP goodness, this book will make you a better PHP programmer and teach you how to go all the way from defining the most basic of variables to performing database tasks and all sorts of other important tasks and tricks of the trade.I highly recommend this well-written and well ordered book, perfect for anyone that wants to learn and excel at PHP programming!!
3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but decent
It's not the best computer language book I have ever read, by a long shot, but it did give me most of what I needed. I found a number of errors, including places where the example code differs from the text description. This is mostly the editor's fault. Also, there were a number of important details that were left out. This brings me to my main concern: it is not clear who this book was written for. A novice would be overwhelmed, I think, while a more experienced programmer like me may be frustrated with some critical omissions. On the whole, though, it did get the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Programming PHP, 2nd Edition (PHP 5)
I'm assuming via the dates of the other reviews, that most of them are referring to Version 1.

2-0 out of 5 stars Big Thick Book With Little Content: Beware!
I have more than 15 years of project management experience. I've read this and quite a few other PMP books from cover to cover. Most of the reviews on this page sound like a propaganda to me. This book gives you the impression that it's a big book and must be covering lots of material. But this, in my opinion, is not true. It's big due to the large font and because most of the space on each page is empty.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to study for the PMP!
I used this book along with two others. I took the exam before purchasing this book, and I did not pass, but after using this book, I passed with flying colors. The author organizes the material clearly and explains things very well. I wish I had purchased this book the first time!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book and clear
The book is very clear and helps the end user understand all the terms. The online tutorial is good too. However it needed more "situational" examples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on programming ever!
I am a successful self taught programmer. I have learned C/C++, Java, Perl, and now Ruby all from books and reading other people's code. I have to say this is the best book on programming for a particular language that I have ever read. And I have read quite a few.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning
For learning Ruby, this is a great book. It'll help you learn the basics (although a little coding will help you more than reading will), and then, it'll introduce you to some of the more advanced topics.A great introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Ruby and Rails Developers
This book is a must for both Ruby and Ruby on Rails developers. It is extremely well written and contains much more than a normal programming book. Most importantly it assumes that you're above average intellegence and doesn't pull punches when it comes to complex ideas.

Editorial Review

The PHP server-side scripting language and the MySQL database management system (DBMS) make a potent pair. Both are open-source products--free of charge for most purposes--remarkably strong, and capable of handling all but the most enormous transaction loads. Both are supported by large, skilled, and enthusiastic communities of architects, programmers, and designers. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All their examples work!
Excellent book. All their examples work and they describe the differences that can be encountered in different recent versions of PHP. Pretty much all you need is here, and the whole book comes on the CD so you can take it with you when you are travelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read and Reference
For beginners this book is very worthwhile. I bought 2 "PHP and MySQL" books from Amazon and I haven't even opened the other book. Whenever I need code examples or a reference this book provides me with the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars author brilliantly combines what and how with why of css
this book is excellant.the author does a great job of teaching css by providing clear examples which build upon one another. he combines what and how with why and makes it fun in the process. this is a very efficient learning tool. i'll be sure to buy his coding book when it comes out.great job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best CSS book I've ever read.
I've never written a book review before but feel compelled to comment on this one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Straight-Forward, No Fluff
This book is an incredible guide to writing Web code the right way from the design side. Most websites are so poorly coded, and most texts I've used to make sense of using XHTML/CSS have fallen short. But Stylin' delivers real-world, extremely useful examples like the drop down menus. You will walk away from this book understanding clearly how to structure your pages with clean, standardized markup (XHTML) and how to style them perfectly across clients (CSS). Imagine (for example) a dynamic dropdown menu built solely from a super-clean ul list!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an excellent book!
This is by far the best book I have ever bought on Dreamweaver. I am a self-learner, and I have about ten books at all levels on Dreamweaver, starting from "dummies" to "beyond". In this book, the author goes through the laborious tasks of explaining the basic concepts first, and then follows these up with one or more step-by-step tutorial. He also provides a host of appropriate tips and "notes" such as "Power Users' Clinic", "Up to Speed", etc. that are very useful to a self-learner like myself. The videos are simply outstanding.I wish that there were more videos. I assume that the author will continue writing such books. How about a Flash 8 book, David?

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Book with Relevant Articles
This is a great book. The writing style is very friendly and encourages the reader to keep turning pages. It is well organized and addresses areas (such as perfomance and profile) that very few Javascript books delve into. Also of value are the discussion of various third party libraries and the very relevant and detailed example chapters (e.g. implementing a type-ahead text component).Server side code is include for several common server side technologies (Java, PHP and .Net).All in all, this is an excellent book for those wishing to come up to speed on Ajax quickly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacks focus
If you are an experienced programmer and already familiar with design patterns, refactoring, and application architecture, then you will probably find this book to be very frustrating.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best AJAX Book Available Today
Ajax in Action by Dave Crane is the best Ajax book on the market today. With over 600 pages of content, this incredibly well-written text explains why Ajax is so powerful and how this simple programming feature (it really isn't difficult to learn at all) has changed web development forever. No longer are users and developers limited to a page reload world, as the power of this technology now has the ability to make the web work like regular applications. It's a trend that has been desired for a loooong time and boy does it ever deliver!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreamweaver 8 and Nac OS X
Good book, walks you right through each step of the way. Examples are good. Slight problem with the Mac OS X instructions, but workable. A good understanding of your computer system and operating system is suggested to help with some of the exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective, but needs a little tweaking....
Dreamweaver is a deceptively simple-appearing program, but is incredibly powerful and complex "under the hood". Thus, future users will need exceptionally well-prepared materials to learn it well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for starters
Before I picked up this book, I had no experience with dreamweaver whatsoever, and basic html skills (I can read html and know what it is.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it
This book takes you through the CLR and explains how and why it works. The aurthor teaches you about the metadata all the way down to whats inside the internal data sructures the CLR uses. You will learn about what gets put on the stack and heap and what data, and in what order things are on the stack and heap. There is so much to the CLR and its difficult to put it all down. This book does a good job at explaining it all in an orginized easy to read fasion. At first glance this book looks like its just an introduction to the .NET Framework and then a C# language tutorial starting with the primitive types and then moving on up to generics. This is not the case, it starts off explaing the what the .NET Framework is and the CLRs execution model. Then it goes into metadata and application configuration and installation. Then it gets into the nitty gritty. It starts you off explaining the types in chapter 4, this insnt just a tutorial to ints and objects, it takes you deep under the covers. You will also get a good understanding of the various tools, like NGen.exe and when and why you should and shouldnt use it. There is alot of difficult content in this book, you will atleast understand it better if you read this. There is so much about this book that I can say but all I need to say is buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential CLR Internals
I echo the positive reviews below. If you already know the .Net platform fairly well and want to understand the internals of the CLR, this is the best place to start. This edition is as good or better than his 1.0/1.1 version, Applied .Net Framework Programming.

4-0 out of 5 stars For advanced developers
This book gives a deep view of the CLR and framework. You can find tips for performance, and complete description of many functionalities of the framework. The bad think of this book, is that don't come with a CD, and because this, you lost a quick find and a way to carry the book with you. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book - Good fundamentals less on development focus
This book is all about Web services platform architecture and standards. It cooks well on most of the alphabet soup of web services standards. This book would guide you instead of browsing over the internet for what is what. The book falls short on guidelines for implementing them. The book also a bit old in its evolving specifications and endorsed standards coverage particularly less about WS-I and WS-Security* standards. That is disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains all you need to know about the Web Services Platform
What do you get when you put a number of Web Services gurus from IBM in a room for a while? You'll get the "Web Services Platform Architecture" book.In short, all the authors that assisted in writing this book are Web services experts from IBM who have either wrote the specs or assisted in writing the Web services specs in question. The nice thing about the book is that is it an easy read.It is not a dry, boring, "reading-these-specs is-putting-my-to-sleep," book.As you know, there are a number of specs that cover Web services, so the authors have a taken a short-and-sweet approach to each protocol. Each protocol is covered in detail, but the detail surrounds why you would want to care about this protocol, and not what paragraph 4, subparagraph 8 of chapter 2 of WS-Security says about naming conventions, for example. Each chapter ties the business needs to the technical aspects of the protocol, and talks about how the protocol can be used to solve a given business problem.

Not only the content is way to complete for the exam and the real life, the learning metodology is a work of art, it is very light to read (unlike other technical books that dry your brain in one hour).
5-0 out of 5 stars Authors have clarity
Authors know the stuff. They didn't just reformat the contents from other places to make this book
3-0 out of 5 stars Not Enough End-to-End Examples
This book has its strong points and weakness. It explains certain concepts really well. However it did not have much end-to-end exercise for people to practice. Only 1 end-to-end example in the entire book as I recall. Therefore, it is hard to sink in what you have read. Especially, jsp and servlets need to have multiple pieces put together in order to make the application run. The example does not need to be complehansive, but will help the readers to put all the pieces together. If you are looking for examples to guide you through, then this book is not for you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Use EIP as a guide
This book was exactly what I was looking for to help me scope an integration solution. For me, patterns help solve, better understand, and therefore, better communicate the technical issues of a complex software project; an enterprise integration project is complex.I was better able to communicate and estimate the scope of the project using EIPs as a GUIDE.The pattern icons (and Viso stencils found on the links page of the web site) saved me tremendous amounts time and narrative in the design documents.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for EAI, Messaging and Integration projects
This book joins my elite patterns book collection which include GoF, Core J2EE Patterns, Core Security Patterns and Refactoring to Patterns. And this book gonna be my first reference for all Integration projects.
5-0 out of 5 stars SW Integration Engineering at its best
Deserves to take place in the great line up of GoF, POSA1, POSA2, EAA, Core Security Patterns (other "patterns" books omitted intentionally).

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Perl Book
This book is _the_ book to get when you want to get serious about Perl.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not my style of learning
The book is well edited and has obviously evloved since its first edition to meet the needs of its readers, based on their feedback.
5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best reference for programmers new to Perl
I am not new to programming, but was new to Perl when I took a job that required a ton of pattern matching based scripting. I immediately convinced my boss to buy a bunch of Perl books, including this one. Usually, I am the type to use Google more than any book when learning a new language, but this book has been indispensible. I go to it first anytime I want to know how to do something in Perl, and 9 times out of 10 it is the only resource I need. I agree with other reviewers that this is not the book for beginning programmers, but I could have saved my boss a lot of money had I just had her buy me this one. It's all I've needed. ... Editorial Review

Cascading Style Sheets can put a great deal of control and flexibility into the hands of a Web designer--in theory. In reality, however, varying browser support for CSS1 and lack of CSS2 implementation makes CSS a very tricky topic.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid material but not easy to read
Cascading Style Sheets
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for beginners
I had to buy this book for an Intro to Web Design class and many of my classmates and I agreed that this is not an easy book to follow. It dives into details without laying out the most basics first. In general, the lack of structure and more complicated than necessary language was confusing and maybe one with previous CSS knowledge would know what he's talking about but for a beginner it was quite unhelpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of a Tutorial than a Definitive Guide
If you are not using Cascading Style Sheets in your own HTML documents, you should consider them. They will save you hours of tedious formatting time.CSS allows you to control every aspect of the formatting and display of your website, without having to "touch" each page individually.
