MS Office Visio 2003 Inside Out
Very good general reference.Met my expectations and meets my needs.

This book is what used to be called a "manual" that came "free" after you spent a few hundred dollars on software.If you are looking for a manual, this is a good choice, but if you want to learn how to use the program with this, please don't.The examples it showed were not consistent within the chapter, so you could not follow along by trying to try out the concepts after reading easily.Read more

Pretty good!
I'm not new to maya, but I had some questions about easier UV mapping tool, and this book tells me the hint, contains other useful information that I need to know as a good modeler and animator!

Why I did not learn anything from this book.
Some Maya books are unclear about the real "need to know" steps on creating a model and this is one of those books.It is well known that most really good books about Maya topics come with a DVD with video tutorials that help reinforce the book and further your knowledge.I am sorry to say that this book did not have much to offer in that area.
Terrific Resource
This book is a terrific resource for those who want to refine their skill set. It provides information on the structure of proper topology for your characters right up to rigging and animation. For those who want a detailed book on modelling a character. . .this is not it. This book assumes that you have advanced modelling skills and does not provide step by step instructions. It would be an extremely awesome book if it did.

Wow, Version II
This updated edition has been revamped with new tips for the latest version of Photoshop.It has Davis' usual mix of practical techniques with impressive illustrations that show the kind of results you can expect.A DVD set is also available if you want to watch the lessons on your computer.All in all a good entry in the Wow series.

Buy and be Wowed
I had the pleasure of sitting through Jack's class while on a Geek Cruise called "Macmania" and he refered to his book. I bought it wondering just how good the book would be relative to Jack in the flesh and I have to say that the book presents very well indeed. This is not always true for some teachers but Jack has the gift to be able to clearly and effectively communicate the needed information to make Photoshop sing for non-professional (and even them at times!) users. The title of "how to wow" really does say it all. The book is full of easy to use techniques that will really punch up an average picture to near-fine art quality, assuming it's a good picture to start. And even then, it can really help salvage a picture that might be so-so to a very acceptable picture. Many of the techniques are very easy to use and make alot of sense once you try it once. In my own case, I used his tips on distortionfilters to straighten out a picture of a building in just seconds. No bellows needed or fancy 3rd party filters needed. He shows how to selectively adjust contrast, color, brightness, color correction and alot more without the typical photoshop overhead of a dozen layers and such. He does push the use of raw files and after watching what can be done with raw files, I can see why. But, he does not leave those who can only shoot JPEGs behind, many of tips and tricks work just as well with JPEGs and he demos them that way.

From the Source means literally that
I just noticed that the Macromedia "Training from the Source" series bear a striking resemblence to the pdf manuals that are available with Macromedia products.That is, anyone can log onto the Macromedia (now Adobe) web site, and access their "manuals" in pdf format free of charge.This and other training from the source manuals appear to be rewrites of these basic manuals.I am not faulting Macromedia, as this makes sense from a business perspective.
Great Book
This book makes things simple by allowing you to work and read at the same time. The lessons are long. So time myst be made to learn the lessons.

Go With the Flow
A nice overview of the workflow of Macro/Adobe's well-entrenched, tightly integrated website creation suite; This collection of tutorials is both a good introduction and a decent update to the current versions of Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Flash, without going too deeply into any of those programs (which would be way too much for one book). It's well written, better explained than some books I've read on the subject, with some errors (par for the course with Training From the Source), but nothing too debilitating.

Good bag of tricks for advanced game programmers
This is the latest volume in the game programming gems series that is now six years old. This book, like the others in the series, is a collection of articles written by industry experts for the advanced game programmer. Because it covers so much ground with little or no background information, I doubt that one reader will be able to appreciate the whole book. The book comes with a CD that has source code for all of the articles, which is very helpful.
Programming Tips from the Pros
Intended for the intermediate to advanced game programmer, this is a book that will literally have something for everyone. It contains fifty-two 'gems' that is, articles on how to some particular aspect of game programming. Sophisticated game programming is probably the most complex programming there is. And this book goes into some pretty sophisticated programming details.

Great!
This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!

Good tutorial book on Flash
This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.

Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program
Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site.The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.

Good Book
I found this to be a really good book.It covers everything you need to know about typography.From the basics and generalized topics, to the nitty gritty.So if you are looking to have a better undertanding of typography, I highly recommend this book.

Covers past history, letter architecture and future computer typesetting
I am only half way through this book (so much in it I have to take it a few pages at a time). The history of type is covered (and should be read to learn vocabulary...but has a great glossary if you just want to learn terms in other sections as you go along...21 pages of glossary.)
Very good
Although I'm not an expert and therefore cannot comment on whether this really is a complete manual, I can say that the book is very good. It's full of helpful examples (nicely placed in the margins) that help the reader develop good typographical intuitions. This book is great.
this book is great - it is not too advanced for beginners. It walks you through director setup, but also allows for you to skip to the more advanced stuff. Its a great book for any level and is engaging, and an easy read. I recomend it strongly.

This book is good...but i would really like it it has a little more picture on the steps.

having learned the basics of director in a class was a good start to the program, but being the MONSTER that director is, a 'beginner' like myself, definitely needs the extra help.This book is relatively easy to understand, (relative because the program itself is just so complex), and is thorough.I found solutions for problems in the book that I could not find on the Macromedia website!

If you want to learn Rhino ....
This book provides plenty of examples, grouped in a context in which they will be used. Some Nurbs, modeling theory and troubleshooting tips. Enough to answer questions as you go through the text but not so much as to be overwhelming.
Horrible
Do not buy this book. Instead buy the online Rhino video tips from Mcneel. I bought this book expecting to learn something only to discover that the stuff I learned was useless. Save your time and money
Numerous omissions and typos made for a very frustrating read.Mislabeled drawings and missing or erroneous instructions made exercises difficult to follow. Fundamental exercises were superficial and fragmented without logical development or context making retention difficult.Rhino's supplied Level 1 and Level 2 Training Materials are far superior in all regards. Compehensive and More
Lisa wirtes one of the most (if not the best) comprehensive books about Final Cut Pro enabling almost anyone to "get it" when even the Apple Manuals and on line help do not. I had her version 4 book and now the version 5 book. I only hope she updatesit for version 6, 7, 8, 9 etc, that Apple most assuredly will continue to release.

I Like The Visual Guide Format for Learning Software
The folks that do the Visual QuickPro Guides have developed an interesting format that they use for computer books. Basically each page has two columns. The outside column has the text that describes what is being done on that page. The column near the gutter of the book is used for screen shots that show what the screen should look like as you do the procedure described on the outside column. This philosophy is combined with an excellent index and table of contents to enable you to quickly find what you want to do.
An invaluable reference!
Lisa Brenneis has done it again!This book is a great primerand a very thorough reference source.I studied it for several days before taking a course in Final Cut Pro and went into the class better prepared than I would have been without this book.

I am so happy to have found this book and DVD lesson
I have needed InDesign Training for a very long time.It is the only program the agency I work for is allowed to use, but I live in the middle of nowhere and have been unable to attend classes.This book and 2 hour DVD lesson totally has gotten me up to speed on making page layouts.I only wish I had bought it from Amazon instead of Barnes and Noble, I would have saved $15.At any rate, get this book.The best thing about it is that the author uses PRACTICAL examples for doing things.Most computer books expect you to know things already.Well, I didn't know squat.Now I do.The author runs you through simple examples, getting more and more complex with functions, until you have it down.I love that!I loved this book so much I ordered his Photoshop book too since I need to learn that program.So, if you bought InDesign CS2 and need help from the get go, GET THIS BOOK FIRST!

If it wasn't for Deke....
I would never have tackled InDesign CS2 without this book. Deke lays it out, so to speak, in every way. Do-along lessons, The DVD and the large pictures showing you what it should look like create a visual safety net. You almost can't go wrong. The book lessons are so clear and Deke takes you through every way to do a thing in each lesson. If you're a keyboard freak there are keyboard shortcuts galore, include Deke Keys which you can install with the lessons. I am more of a mouse person and Deke makes sure to outline all the ways you can use the mouse to access pallets and work with graphics and text. Deke is enthusiastic about the software but brutally honest about it's few shortcomings. Best of all, he takes you through the trickiest parts of the learning process and manages to be funny all the while. I always love Deke's lesson plans. Instead of using a stuffy business format for the sample documents he presents you with projects like Little Pupper Friend's Cookie Recipe or Professor Shembops 1970's pop music quiz. It all feels less intimidating. Another good thing is the way Deke explains things for those of us who have been using PageMaker or QuarkXPress. Adobe InDesign CS2 One on One is a wonderful way to learn. The book is great for design people who are not particularly "techie". Still, InDesign CS2 is not for sissies.I know this sounds nutty, but I feel like Deke is right here with me every step of the way.

Enough with the shortcuts already
I bought this book because of the extensive amount of instructional video that accompanies the written text. It was something I was looking for in an instructional book - and I didn't find another book with 2+ hours of video. However, after only completing four of the chapters I cannot help but be bothered by the fact that the author has an awful habit of telling you ever possible shortcut configuration for every function. He spends an inordinate amount of time explaining all the shortcut possibilities which is very distracting when you are trying to follow along with an exercise. It's great to know all these handy shortcuts, but if you are just starting to learn InDesign (and I'm guessing here) you initially just want the basics. This approach really slows down the process. Unfortunately, these "shortcut digressions" seem to continue throughout the book. The video content (and the book content) probably could have been reduced by about 30-40% if he didn't labor about every possible shortcut every other sentence. In all fairness the book does contain a lot of content, but I am kinda disappointed by the video. They could have made this potentially excellent book truly excellent if they made an appendix of all these shortcuts rather than cram every option into every exercise. Very distracting. ... Speed Clinic Delivers!
Since I was new to PhotoShop CS2, upgrading from years with PS Elements, I started with basic, highly recommended massive tutorial type PS CS2 books first. I had a "second tier" list of PhotoShop books for purchase consideration after I became at least semi-literate in PS CS2. This was near the top of my "second tier" book list - it should have been one of the FIRST PhotoShop books I bought!
Paid for itself in the First Chapter
After finishing the first chapter of Matt Koskowski's book I knew it had paid for itself already.After the second chapter I felt guilty that I hadn't paid more for the book.After finishing it I felt as if I should send more money to the author or publisher or someone.What a terrific book.Kloskowski presented this vital information the same way he teaches in his clinics and on his video lessons; that is, with perfect clarity and with relevant examples.This is one terrific book.

Buy this book!
This book is written to address directly the kinds of procedures that photographers want to know about Photoshop. Instead of looking at Photoshop from a programmer's perspective (i.e. here are all of the cool things the crop tool can do) Kelby approaches Photoshop from the other side, in a humorous and simple style that starts with what the PHOTOGRAPHER wants to do and then tells you which tools to use and how. If you are looking for a manual that lets you quickly and simply do what you want, get this. By the way, many of the techniques will work with Photoshop Elements. In other words, for under a hundred bucks you can buy this book and Photoshop Elements and do some fantastic things to your photographs. Great book!

A good quick reference
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to handle common tasks within Photoshop.The book targets the novice user who has not yet mastered Photoshop.Scott Kelby takes a light-hearted approach to many of the common tasks and every step is illustrated with colorful screen shots.The text avoids technical jargon and is written in conversational language.The price is right and it is well worth the purchase.Do not purchase this book if you want to gain a mastery over PS and want to know the intricities of the application.

A must-have for ANY editor who uses Photoshop
Quite simply, this is THE book to have if you're an NLE editor. Richard Harrington brings a comical, jovial style to what could be very boring geek speak and it makes it almost fun to go thru this book. (OK, that WAS a geeky comment, but whatever...)
Third times a charm!
This will be my third time purchusing this book, because I need the DVD! the first one I got was really scratch from me not taking care of it. The second I lost and have no idea where it is. This time I'm going to copy the dvd on a drive and a dvd-r so that I can won't lose it! This is a really great book by the way! There's a little something for everyone who uses video and photoghraphs.

Excelent for editors/designers in the road for being pro's
I read the book for the version 7.0, still not CS, but I think that goes by the same way. That book explains in an excellent way how to do things that sometimes are overlooked or seems very difficult to use, but thanks to the book the reader can discover it is not. It's a never-ending book because it includes a DVD with explaining videos, tutorials, lots of samples, free filters, demos, patterns, actions, etc. and in the book there are profiles of pro's explaining what they use photoshop for and tips, and their websites. So you visit the website, and there are lots of links, and you visit that links and so on, so you never end. Besides the author's sarcasm makes it easier to diggest and laugh sometimes. Has many shorcuts too. One detail is that you have to explore the entire disc very well because it has files never mentioned on the book, and there are images in the book that would be very useful to be on the disc. ... A little chunky, but a good necessary work
I'm not a fan of the 'group of papers' style of book. But this book pulls it off nicely. The text is consistenly good throughout. And the illustrations and formulas are high quality and presented nicely.
Excellent guide to OpenGL Shading Language
The recent trend in graphics hardware has been to replace fixed functionality with programmability in areas that have grown exceedingly complex (e.g., vertex processing and fragment processing). The OpenGL Shading Language has been designed to allow application programmers to express the processing that occurs at those programmable points of the OpenGL pipeline. Independently compilable units that are written in this language are called shaders. A program is a set of shaders that are compiled and linked together. The OpenGL Shading Language is based on ANSI C and many of the features have been retained except when they conflict with performance or ease of implementation. This shading language is without a doubt the most important addition to OpenGL since its inception, and this book provides an excellent guide to programming with it. The author was one of the primary contributors to the development of the language, and he provides a well-written and insightful explanation of the language and its use.
do your own shading?!
Twenty years ago, I used to program graphics on an Evans and Sutherland PS340. It was then one of the top of the line graphics computers (costing $100k). It could labouriously do shading, but only Phong and Gouraud. Nowadays, many PCs have this ability, and much faster. But a problem still persists, where often the shading methods are restricted to what is implemented on the graphics chips.

Excellent Painter IX book for beginner to advanced
This is one of the first books you should get if you want to learn to use Painter IX. It gives detailed descriptions, with examples, of all of the brushes, papers/textures and step-by-step instructions for cloning and painting.The enclosed CD includes images in the book that you can use to follow the step-by-step instructions.All instructions are very clear and easy to follow.More experienced users will use this book as an excellent reference source.This is one of the best books I've purchased to learn to use Painter IX.
