4-0 out of 5 stars Nice!
Excellent explanation. Should cover more detail in Stat though. A lot of people use TI-89 for stat and this book just emphasizes on something else. Overall, nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The book that should come with the calculator
When you purchase a TI-89, you should be either directed to purchase the Dummies book for it, or it should be included with the device. More informative (and easier reading than the dry manual included) the Dummies book is excellent to assist you in the learning curve and get your money's worth out of the device.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just Avid guide
While this book is an excellent guide to what you can do with Avid, it also takes the time to explain in an understandable way editing techniques. The new chapters on HD and 24p filmaking are excellent! It gives a good base to understand these new additions to the independent movie making world. The only knock I would give it is it's lack of explanation on effects editing and the marquee title tool is completely ignored.

5-0 out of 5 stars Avid Editing a wonderful and necessary tool
Avid Editing has been a useful tool for me both as a student and as a professional. As a film student, I first picked up Sam Kauffmann's second edition in a production class. Most of us had never touched an Avid before, and yet by the end of the semester, using Kauffmann's text as a go-to guide, my classmates and I were producing dynamic and adeptly edited pieces. Not only does the book provide simple exercises for the reader to try, it also includes a DVD with actual footage to work with.Avid Editing is carefully organized for the beginning editor, but I also use it as a reference now that I am out of college, working as an assistant editor. This new third edition not only expounds upon all the steps, shortcuts and settings covered in the previous editions, but also dedicates entire chapters to editing with 24p and HD footage, making this book invaluable to editors entering the professional world.I strongly recommend this guide for anyone who seeks to teach, learn, or refresh his or her memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book.I am doing an educational video and had never used the Avid system before.I have Avid Xpress Studio HD and this book taught me everything I needed to know to get the job done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid reference book for a wide audience
Unleashing the power of R, particularly its graphing capabilities can be a daunting task. This is a well written book that covers all aspects of R graphics and gives plently of examples (with code). After using R for nearly 3 years now, I learned quite a bit of new information. Plus, the last 2 chapters of the book are very advanced and will likely require another 3 years before I can actually fully use them. Regardless, this a great book for people new and old to R.

5-0 out of 5 stars A seminal work
Having readmaterial by Dr. Murrell in R news and other places, I was expecting a great book.I was not disappointed. This is the clearest and most complete explanation of graphics in R that I have seen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Design Workshop
I learned about this book at a recent seminar. Bought it here through Amazon. Was a little worried when I read the first chapter that it would be over my head because I am a total novice, but I soon found myself engrossed in the book. It really is very helpful and the repeatition of ideas and "rules" helps drive home the important stuff. Well laid out so you can skip the chapters that don't interest you. Although I would consider reading them. I found that certain ideas hit home better in some chapters than others and I think it has helped my overall design ability. Good Book especially for those of us who love how-to books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams Design Workshop
This is a great reference for print design but the web site section is almost laughably outdated.Gone are the days of splash entry pages and HTML tables for non-conmplex layouts (now easily rendered by CSS). And who the heck is running 640x480 resolution on a 14 inch monitor these days??

4-0 out of 5 stars Not attractive, but a useful reference for 2-D design
This is a combination of two books by the author, covering the essential principles of form and design in a textbook style. It won't inspire the artist, but does provide technical information that can be useful, especially for computer graphics artists. 4-0 out of 5 stars Written long long ago... yet still up to date!
This book is actually a compilation of two old books from the same writer. As he stated in the intro - it covers essential principles of form and design in very basic, formal, scientific way. This may be a bit dry for some, and the illustrations are very different from popular design books. It's nothing arty but it does mention crucial points for designing.5-0 out of 5 stars swanky

4-0 out of 5 stars Up to date
This is a great text book for graphic designers to have in their library. It provides a lot of visuals and information designers should be familiarized with.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I have been a graphic designer for over 20 years. I teach typography at the university level. I learned typography the old-fashioned way: by specifying, setting, and manipulating it by hand. From that background I can confidently state that THE best way to truly understand how type works is through understanding the forms of letters, words, and groups of words.3-0 out of 5 stars Wow, what a letdown
This is one of the rare books that my art college actually required me to purchase for a Typography class. The design of this book is poor and very dated. Just take a look at the cover. The first chapter offers a timeline which is interesting in concept--it features a brief history of lettering and type, and adds images of other significant events happening at the same time. But the timeline design forces you to jump back and forth from images to text and the grid layout forces the image placement to be so inconsistent that you give up trying to find the corresponding text. The rest of the book provides interesting and useful information for the type neophyte, but again, its WAY too dated to be a required textbook. I'm sorry I bought this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book breezes through the basics and then isn't able to deliver on the advanced. There's very little information about the features and functions but I did find a section on how to dress!!! This is supposed to be about the program POWERPOINT, not about presentation basics.
3-0 out of 5 stars Content without Soul
This book has so much content that if you wanted to write an exam on PowerPoint, you could just remember the sentences in this book. What the book doesn't do is tell you why you would want to do things in the way Wempen explains. In a phrase, the book has no soul. It's just a compilation of what PowerPoint's menus can do in so much detail that it hurts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book and I'm Not Crying Wolf
I purchased this title as a supplemental text for a Master's course I was taking in Advanced Graphics and Multimedia. It was the most practical resource I had available to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must in every sense
If you're new to flash or you know the basics, this is the right book for you. Covers any possibility and guides you step by step even before you can touch a computer! The first chapters explains how Flash works, just as any other flash book, but also explains all the differences using flash for animation instead of web design, and contains an useful description about how you can optimize and reduce your files size for optimum performance, and more important, the differences between TV and video output and web animation file sizes, frame rates and screen proportions. This part often is not included in most flash books and it's essential for ambitious proyects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great Book For Aperture LOWER VERSIONS
BEWARE.one star just to get your attention!
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!
I was given the opportunity to review this book by an acquaintance, and I am very glad for the opportunity. It has totally changed the way I approach my digital workflow. My previous workflow started with a folder for each year, containing a folder for each month.Inside the monthly folders were still other folders for each shoot.I would download my digital RAW files in the root of each shoot folder. Then I would create 3 separate subfolders inside each shoot folder, (1) alt (for altered ), (2) fin (for final), and (3) out (for output).I would place the various iterations of each file in these directories for retrieval and sorting.I would open each RAW file in Nikon Capture and evaluate the shot. Then I would make any necessary alteration and save the required output files, whether for web, print, or archive.Sometimes the images would be opened in Photoshop for further work, and saved back to the same directory structure. This worked fairly well, but it was a very slow process.Finding images weeks, months, and years later was very difficult without going into each directory and looking through the saved files. Now I keep all of my files in the Aperture program, and it allows me to save all of the iterations side-by-side.Even those alterations made in Photoshop are saved as "versions" of my original digital file.It has cut my workflow time down significantly, but even more important, it has allowed me to keep track of all of the versions of my files together, making the finding and printing of previous files manageable.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just Right
I had recently purchased a digital SLR (after decades of film photography) and I had many other scanned images 'from way back when.'And with a fairly big digital project looming, I needed to be 'in the know' with Aperture -- and fast. The book was written well and gave the hands-on learner as well as the visual student something to get a hold of.This is my first Amazon review of a product (though I've purchased a ton of stuff over the years), but I really wanted to give my 'Thumbs Up' to this book for getting me set and ready to go.I did use the book as reference often, as I recalled, "I remember doing this in a lesson... but how.." and Orlando Luna & Ben Long got me prepared.Without much effort I got a photo-journalistic view of a recent wedding, edited & organized and then set up on one of my websites with Aperture. And I can safely say that it wouldn't have happened without this book.THANKS for your effors Orlando & Ben and Peachpress!I would recommend this book first, if you're new to Aperture, before going on to others. ... I have several Visio books - most are useless for developers who write VBA/VB/VC++ code for Visio automation. For those who develop for Visio, this is a must-have book. It's simply the Visio developer's bible compared to the rest.It includes sample code, appendices of events, properties and more.I wish I had known about this book before I began visio programming because it's easy to read from beginning to end and progress your skills incrementally - now I use it as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - highly recommend it!
Video Shooter is an excellent instructional guide. Braverman's unprecedented expertise and superior storytelling skills help guide readers through all the key topics and everything you'd need to know for professional video shooting and production. I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars BARRY KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT
What I like most about Mr. Braverman's book is how it speaks not only to the technical side but more so to the creative side. His insights are geared toward using talent and instinct within the given parameters of the tools and medium. The book was a fun and easy read with a humorous, conversational style and lots of pictures (which makes perfect sense given it's a book involving a visual medium). I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to shoot a story (emphasis on STORY) without getting lost in the wonder of technology yet using that very technology only to free up the story. Hats off to Mr. Braverman for a handy how-to guide to get that story shot and out on screens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - A Must-Have
This book far exceeded my expectations, even after reading all the five star reviews. The text is both engaging and informative - a rare combination for what might be termed a "how-to" type book.Braverman's book actually stands as an interesting read aside from the technical and artistic information it imparts. His style is refreshingly candid and his guidance practical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastering Photoshop Basics
My husband and I are taking a beginning Photoshop class at the local adult school. Instead of a more extensive and difficult text we chose to supplement the class with Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies. It moves inmore logical sequence than the class and enabled us to begin editing our photos immediately. It also allowed us to focus onclass instruction without taking notes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements 4 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))
Good reference for ideas of how to do almost anything in Photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Software that's getting ever more powerful
Thee seems to be a trend in software that they have to keep comming up with new releases to get people to send in more money. But after version three or four, it seems that the new features that they are adding aren't really features that you'd use. Look at Microsoft Word, which of the new features do you really use? But also look at WordPad. It's grown until it's about the equivalent of Word 3.0 or something like that. It's faster, smaller, easier to use and pretty much does what you want, in some cases even better than Word itself.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, a Disappointment
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, simple to follow
I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer, not a pro.But I enjoy "post processing" my digital images and Photoshop Elements is a good product to use.But there are many nuances to the product and Scott Kelby does an excellent job at presenting those capabilities. His examples are straightforward and useful.I recommend this book highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction
Iam a college student and my ambhition seems to be leaning towards film editing for the past couple of years I have worked with Final Cut Pro which was a farely simple , yet complex peice of editing software. This year Iam in an advanced class where our teacher has stressed to us to work with some Adobe After Effects 7 in additon with final cut pro I bought this book to help me further understand the software. The first time I opened up After Effects I will admit I was Iniminated I tried fooling around with some of the panels and stuff and couldnt figure anything out ,, So now I have started from chapter 1 with this book I inserted the dvd that it comes with into the computer which has sort of a classroom in a book feel to this book but much better.. Go through the chapters using the source clips provided on the dvd. This has helped me understand what After Effects is about now Iam not finished with this book yet but wanted to write a review on this because it has helped me with its easy reading and keyboard shortcuts for both pc and mac.It explains every small detail in easy to understand language there is no computer/video editor slang.. If you are looking for a good editing book and you have Adobe After Effects 7.0 This is its Bible not the manual , which tends to use more slang assming that the purchaser knows what they are talking about , the manual tends to make things more difficult. This book makes even someone has never worked with film editing able to accomplish what they would like and learn the software.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
I bought this book based on the feedback on this page. And although I would not call the book unusable, it has a lot of scope for improvement. The book layout is terrible and there is almost zero cross refrencing in the book itself. Imagine the author does not ask the reader to look in another part of the book for more information. So my verdict is that although the book has good content, it's laid out in a haphazard way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
I love this book. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it hopelessly fails trying to get into PowerPoint programming territory. The author should have stayed away from this area and concentrated more on beginner issues. After all, this certainly is a beginner's book. In fact, it's as good as the missing PowerPoint manual. If you want to go beyond the manual, check out the well explained Cutting Edge PowerPoint by Geetesh Bajaj. It makes a great complement to this book. And if you want to do more programming, check out Powerful PowerPoint for Educators by David Marcovitz. And for troubleshooting PowerPoint, look at Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful step by step
I like this book because I found out how to use all the features of the software and it covered many of the topics that were important to me including the fine points of graphic design and tips for delivering the presentation in front of an audience. ... Read more
