this product is awesome, but ull need extra help to get cert.
1-0 out of 5 stars Badly structured and written
I'm an experienced vb6 programmer and looked for a book to help me make the switch. I found this book diving into issues without giving you any prerequisites. I had a hard time understanding where he wants to take me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe good for exam, but you won't learn .NET or C# here
This book has some highlights, but it is tightly authored to the VS.NET version it comes bundled with. Some folks will find this a bonanza, but that's only if you're willing to rubber-stamp your exam. There's abundance of Wizard code specific to VS.NET 2003 version. I am working with VC# Express 2005 and many of the things are N/A in this environment. ... anyway, I could sort my way out by looking at the samples and learn that what used to be a Control is nothing more than a Class that derives from Controls and some additional boilerplate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Network Security Assessment
explainsa variety of exploits and tells you how to harden your network. This book is very well researched and extremely well written and is reader friendly, as some security books leave the reader lost in techno babble, not this book however very easy reading it now sits on my desk as a ready reckoner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for security policy enablers and admins
This is one of the few books that I have come across that focuses mainly on the innards of security assessments. The services based security and counter measures are helpful for threat modeling. This book is really great for people in the security risk and threat analysis for a quantitative and qualitative validation. Good book to help in setting up corporate security policy model.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Methodology and Specifics
I've read a heck of a lot of books on security assessments. Some turn into hacking manuals, others turn into windy documents on documenting the process and why each piece of the process is important.

2-0 out of 5 stars Appalling
I have not yet taken the exam, so I can only tell you about the material covered for it's own value.
1-0 out of 5 stars Go get another book if you want to pass the exam
This book gets one star because it does not cover the material required to pass the exam.I would have almost failed the exam had I used just this book for my preparation.Luckiliy I have used online questions from one of the web-sited listed on Microsoft's web-site and that helped me to pass the exam.
2-0 out of 5 stars confusing, vague, ambiguous, and difficult to read
This book uses words pretty loosely, and frequently confuses the readers. Explanations are not clear. Material is incoherent. Microsoft's proofreaders, reviewers, and/or editors did a poor job on this book. Buying it is a waste of money. Please look elsewhere. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Explanations of complex terms are simple and easy to understand.Book is layed out well with multiple choice questions after each chapter and other questions and explanations for good comprehension.Definitely recommend this book as a great resource and prep book for A+
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
I have read about 20% so far and the author is amazingly undry for a text book. His writing style is light but packed with information and it reads fast. Unlike my other A+ book his history lessons are interesting and makes comprehending the material much easier. By far one of the best text books I have ever owned

3-0 out of 5 stars Not up to its description
You certainly should know that the included practice tests are just MS Word docs, in a format that does not match the actual test, with incorrect answers. And the movie clips are useless. So factor the CD out completely when you consider buying this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great review of network reconstructions
While this may not be an all encompassing review of what systems biology is, it provides an insightful view on network reconstruction. I've found this book very helpful and well written (being a first edition, it does have a few typos, but this is normal). It has a very logical flow, but it is written on the level of a professional or graduate student interested in entering the field of systems biology. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, moderately Microsoft-focused, no Cisco
There's a lot in this book that is good. However, it's focused towards the future Microsoft server administrator, not the future router or switch maintainer. I'd suggest a CCNA-training book for that.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for self-study!
Please be aware that this book (and others by the same publisher)are meant for colleges and/or trade schools and thus the answers to exercises, labs, projects, etc are available ONLY to instructors. Furthermore, neither the publisher nor the authors maintain a website for errata so you are on your own if you misunderstand a concept due to typos and false information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for Network+ exam
While this book wasn't written specifically for CompTIA's Network+ exam, I found it extremely useful and informative.I have read many networking books, and this one explained the concepts very well, especially at what layers various hardware devices work.I bought it for a college networking class and kept it after the class was over because I thought it was so useful.I passed my Network+ exam a couple of weeks ago with the help of this book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
This book is offers very broad and detailed information about python's network features. It is very good written with many source examples. The only thing with this book (like many other python books) is, that this book was published early 2003. So things lik "SOAP" or "Twisted" are only scratched. This book really shows the fundamental features of python networking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Clearly written with tons of practical examples.Mr. Goerzen has a very deep understanding of internet protocols, network programming, and the Python libraries. If you are ever going to use Python to send or receive emails, write web servers, or anything else you can think of that has to do with internet, you should not hesitate to buy this book, far and away the best Python network/internet book on the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book fills in an a gap
The author fills an important gap in writing this book. There are a lot of books about the programming language Python - good books and not so good books. These books surely are scratching the topic of network programming. But if you want to develop certain client-server applications in Python these books do not really help very much.

1-0 out of 5 stars Title.
This book only seems to prepare for about half the SNPA test and offer a lot of other information that's nice to know but not needed. One thing people might want to study is the stuff that has only one sentence written about it.For instance, that's great 5 pages might be written on phase 1 and 2 for VPN set up, but if there's one sentence written about how the "nat" command affects anything at all to do with VPN, study that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top pick students will appreciate
The updated third edition of the Cisco Press edition of CCSP SNPA Official Exam Certification Guide (1587201526 $59.95) is a 'must' study guide for any interested in the exam. Network security consultant Michael Gibbs shares preparation tips and test-taking tips and points out common areas of weakness and places where refresher information comes in handy. The companion cd-rom offers a testing engine for either individual topic areas or the overall, timed exams and allows readers to self-test their knowledge, while chapters survey VPS remote configuration, Cisco access control servers, and more. A top pick students will appreciate.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Third Edition Covers the Latest Test
As anyone who has ever experienced a virus or network break in clearly understands, network security has become a major part of the management of any network that is exposed to the outside world. And I doubt that there is a major network anywhere that doesn't have at least some Cisco equipment. To go with the Cisco equipment has come an examination based certification procedure. This began with the CCSP (Cisco Certified Secure PIX firewall). As the equipment has progressed so has the examination. This book covers the current SNPA (Secure Network PIX ASA) exam, 642-522.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good information, leaves more to be desired
I found myself wanting more when it came time to try the practice exam questions. The book comes with PDF's that serve as the practice exam. What I expected was software that would simulate the test.I'm taking the DBA class next month and I don't expect any issues passing the exam, though I would feel more comfortable forking out the $ to take it if I had a wider pool of questions to study from.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough
This is an excellent book covering MySQL in great detail.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exam voucher not honored for MySQL 5 exams! (but great book)
I love this book, but I am outraged that VUE refuses to honor the included voucher code for MySQL 5 exams. The book is targeted for MySQL 5, and the text in the book clearly states the voucher is for ANY MySQL exam. But VUE claims the included voucher is only valid for MySQL 4 exams.

1-0 out of 5 stars To reiterate moussie99, Not so much
I've read the first half of this book twice now (once for a class, once to pass M.S. test). The book is terrible. There are virtually no examples to help you learn how to construct a Bayesian network.I'm serious.Virtually the only example is actually a homework question at the end of a chapter and the question is wrong!!! (there are dependcies in the table given for the joint distribution, but the acyclic graph shows them as independencies).
4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant Discussion On Probabilistic Reasoning And Uncertainty
Pearl's "Probabilistic Reasoning in Intelligent Systems" is elegantly done seminal work on uncertainty, probabilistic reasoning and all things related inference. As the author says, "This book is a culmination of an investigation into the applicability of probabilistic methods to task requiring automated reasoning under uncertainty", it covers topics on all level i.e. basic ideas, technical and substantive discussions and advanced research. However, my impression of book's target audiences is researchers and readers with a advance understanding of these topics.
1-0 out of 5 stars Not so much
I used this text in addtition to a few others for a course in probablistic reasoning (Bayes nets, etc.) and found that it was very unhelpful. The explanations were very poor and many parts were difficult to read. Also, there weren't very many examples and those that were provided were not very detailed. If you're looking for a text to learn probabilistic reasoning I would suggest trying a different book.Pearl's book could be useful as a 2nd or 3rd reference but not for the primary text.2 thumbs down. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More Mathematical than Technical
Defiantly more of a math book than a programming guide, but that was what I was expecting. This book explains how to use neural networks in the field of finance. It does so very logically and mathematically. You are shown how to apply neural networks to many different financial problems. But you are mostly left to yourself to actually implement the neural networks on a computer system. Some example source code is provided for MathCad, which is an expensive software package you can buy separately.

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
I bought it to prepare my class
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is certainly a good reference book for me when I need to know about network programming using Java.As you all know, Java Network Programming is a vast subject, on which a single book can make no justice of.But Elliotte has tried and he is successful with this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive reference (3rd Edition)
If you're doing anything with Java and Network I/O programming, the topic will most likely be covered in this book. The author does a great job describing not only how Java handles network programming, but the concepts and details of network programming in general. The book takes the core java.net classes and describes each method, what it does, how to use it, what to watch for, code examples, etc - it takes the API Javadoc and expands upon it.

This is the long-awaited 3rd Edition of Tanenbaum's classic book on computer networking. The finest network engineer I know (who was stolen from my previous employer by developers of IPv6)swears by this book, and it is arguably the best single resource for gaining a good technical understanding of modern networking in the mid 1990s. Very Highly Recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic has been improved
Back in 1993, during my senior year at school, I had to learn computer networks. Back then, the only decent book available was Prof Tanenbaum's 2ed. I had found that book boring because it covered every possible networking algorithm and technique in the world without any references to real-world networks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hard read, but no "ultimate" book for such a broad expanding field
This book is a hard read when doing homework problems particularly, but I've never heard of an easy book when learning at this level for computer networks. For what it is, it could have more details to make learning smoother and more efficient.Like many books, it encrypts too much.No need to hide some intricacies because the content itself is hard enough to absorb unless it's natural to you.(The author encrypts to make you think, but I think this is usually unnecessary in general.)This book shows that the Internet must be used to more fully understand the topics at hand. There may be a few minor, detailed intricacies that are not up-to-date, but with computer technology always changing, you can't expect that part to be 100% up-to-date.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best text I've found on the foundations of computer networking
First of all, the fourth edition was published in 2002, so all reviews prior to that date are about a previous edition of this book. This is a classic textbook on computer networking from an academic viewpoint. Do not expect to ever be able to fix a specific network problem or become a CCNE by reading this book. However, doing either of those tasks rests on a firm foundation of the theory found in this book. From the beginning, the author points out that there is some confusion about what a computer network is - a collection of autonomous computers connected by a single technology. He then points out that actually neither the world wide web nor the internet are computer networks. The book goes on to explain networks in terms of a 5 layer system rather than the classic 7 layer OSI model, which is the same as in the previous edition. However, much has been added and much deleted based on the rapidly changing technology involved. For example, the chapter on the physical layer has been completely rewritten. The previous edition focused that chapter on ISDN, ATM and cellular radio. The current edition omits references to that technology and discusses the mobile telephone system and cable television instead. As would be expected, the other section of the book that had the biggest revision was the chapter on the application layer. Gone is the obsolete subject of USENET news, multimedia has changed completely, and the network security section now has its own chapter due to the importance that field has taken on. Finally, the chapter on further reading, which had good comments to go with the suggested reading, was always one of my favorites because it told you why you should read something in addition to showing you what to read, plus the bibliography is divided by network layer. Now, of course, the 3rd edition bibliography section reads like the roll call for a computer book museum. Thus, the new 4th edition chapter on suggested readingis a welcome update. Remember that this book is ultimately about good network design decisions as well as a tutorial on architectures, thus math is inevitable. In fact, most of the chapter-end problems involve mathematics. The math required is not complex, but it will require careful reasoning on your part, much like the numerical problems in Hennessy's "Computer Architecture: A Quantitative Approach". A good companion to this book is "Computer Networking : A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet (3rd Edition)" by Kurose. That book also uses a 5 layer model, but starts from the application layer and works its way down. Also, Kurose's book is more applied, with Java examples and programming labs and projects included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Classroom Tool
My students LOVE this book. They refer to it regularly. The flow charts and diagrams are invaluable. The systematic diagrams help students visualize how various networks components work individually and as a group. This is a great beginning network book as well as a reference tool. The chapters are short and to the point. Reproducing the diagrams without the text allows assessment of student understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars OVERVIEWOFBASICCONNECTIONS
This book, "How Networks Work" is a basic overview of how a typical computer networking apparatus functions. As everything goes online these days, computer networking has truly become a way of life. And, there are fewer better ways to get initiated than acquiring and dissecting (the contents of) this well-written book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Clear Explanations
This book keeps things pretty basic.I have a two year degree in Computer Networking and there was nothing new to me.This book, however, would be appropriate for anyone who was looking for a quick intro and brief description of how "networks" work.It starts with "how the first telephone worked" up through "DSL is a broadband internet connection for consumers". The graphics are very well done and are helpful when describing how things work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
It is unfortunte that I couldn't rate it lower than a one. I had to buy this for a class. It is poorly written and organized and along with the standard test that comes with this course, the whole thing is a tortured exercise in semantics.Plus, For starters on pg 54 there are "WBS Definitions" and finally on page 58 one is told that WBS means Work Breakdown Structure. It would appear that this author's native language is not English and unfortunately, I haven't yet made sense out of the babble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the essence of Project Managment
Mr. Gopal Kapur has captured the essence of project management in this book. The Project Process Architecture (PPA) supplies proven techniques backed up with practical tools and provides the foundation for successful project management. However, this work goes beyond the "mechanics" of project management and discusses the topics typically not covered in project management material and seminars. These topics include the importance of business and IT leadership, why clear communication is vital to project success, understanding individual and team dynamics, why it is vital to have a disciplined and consistent project management approach, and why a project can't succeed without clear project ownership and strong sponsorship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory book for Networks
It's a great introduction to networking, with details about LAN, Backbones, and WAN architectures. It is also easy to read and Understand.

2-0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite there.....
I purchased this book for a class I was taking. It was the required text for the class.I have 15 years experience in network design and administration and recently returned to school to earn a second degree.I found this text to be overly technical for its intended audience, and would not recommend it to any instructor. Also the accompanying test bank from which an instructor can pull quiz/test questions are absolutely horrible and only serve to confuse students trying to learn.
