4-0 out of 5 stars Decent study guide
I found the Sybex book to be full of all the information I need to study for the Linux+ exam.It is rather a dry read though, but it still takes time to explain things in simple concepts.I enjoy the fact that the practice exams will work in a linux environment, but I was a bit let down when the pdf version of the book would not work in FedoraCore 4 due to some security measure on the pdf.Overall this is a decent book for the price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good...
This book was the main focus of my studies... I have been doing administration for 4 years now, so it was mostly just to fill in blanks. It did well with that respect to things. 1 night of study of this book and one other, and I was good to go. After browsing through the chapter content a bit, I would suggest having a second book available to contrast this book. If you can't really afford it though, go through the book, and take time to actually perform the various functions and examples throughout the book. That should get you ready for the test.
3-0 out of 5 stars There is more to know
I have been a casual Linux user for about three years, and a serious student of Linux networking and programming for about a year, so I figured that all I would need to pass the Linux+ exam is a little time with study guide. So I studied this book for two weeks, then went and took the test, and failed. That was my own fault, I didn't apply myself. So I went back, worked through every step of every example in the book, memorized everything I could, and got to the point where I could correctly answer every end of chapter question and scored 89% the first time I took the sample exam included on the CD-ROM.I took the test again and failed again. There were many, many questions on the test that were nowhere to be found in this book, relating to both hardware and software.

1-0 out of 5 stars The most error prone book I have ever read.
I am sure that most of the Exam Cram books are good. That being said, this book is so full of errors that it is almost unreadable. The claim that SQL servers have 30 disk drives in them, that SAN devices have dual 2.8 GHz procs with 4GB of RAM, or that GBICs have SC connectors is disappointing. But when it references the most common copper connection is the DB9, or in the study questions that DNS servers do not do name/IP resolution, we have now reached a point that using this book will actually hinder your progress.
5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise, and to the point.
This book is a great study resource for the new Server+ Exam. I recommend it to anyone looking to take the test who needs a great study resource!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not an outstanding study guide for SK0-002, but good enough to pass
My exam tested memory types/specs as well as SCSI and SAN technologies very heavily, which this book does an excellent job of covering. There were many other questions this guide covered very little or not at all.For example, the exam tests on fire suppression technologies, something that is not even mentioned in this guide.I got a 732 out of 900.This is pretty much the only unofficial SK0-002 study guide out there for Server+ right now, so the only way you could get a more complete guide is to buy the official self-study materials from CompTIA.This guide is probably your best bet for value. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All what you need...
I got this book with an incomplete prior knowledge about project management. I used to know about some parts of planning, execting and controlling stages. However, I had no previous knowledge about initiation and closing. My advice to you is that this is all what you need to pass the test. It has all of the information. The book contains sufficient descriptions about the Project+ process groups without unnecessary extra details. It is easy to read and is very concise in explaining the terms and has plenty of real-lify examples. Each chapeter has 20 MCQ at the end of it. The book has two practice tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive (2nd Edition)
Well done compilation that is approachable while covering a lot of ground. If you need one book that touches on all the technology aspects of the cable industry and can fit on your bookshelf, this is it. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial and reference
This book is a remarkable survey of a very broad field. It is necessarily somewhat superficial in its coverage of some of the more abstruse topics, but provides the necessary essentials an engineer needs to operate in the cable television environment.Unlike mere compendia of archival publications, this book has a consistent pedagogical viewpoint and notation. It is oriented towards practicing engineers, providing just enough theory to support successful problem solving.I recommend it to anyone working in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last a fully comprehensive CATV handbook
In a quick growing market, and with daily technological improvements like cable television, the lack of a thoroughly comprehensive compilation was being noticed. This book, a kind of Bible for that specific area of telecommunications engineering, could approach a vast variety of technical and operational issues for the CATV industry. A vade mecum (lat. goes with me, means essential) for every CATV engineer or technician. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars nice chapter on the development of the Internet
Doyle gives us a very understandable discourse on the OSPF and IS-IS routing methods. These are implemented by Cisco and Juniper routers. Cisco dominates the networking arena, while Juniper is one of the larger secondary players. So understanding OSPF and IS-IS is vital if your duties involve administering networks using those companies' devices.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information Presented, clear and concise
So basically I know very little about OSPF and nothing about IS-IS.I haven't finished reading the book yet (about 1/4 through it) but, its great so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as you can get for a dry subject
This is one of the better study aids, but as with all study aids it is boring to read.It may just be me, but I hate to read anything like this, but I have to keep my certs. It is up to date with the latest verion of the test and very informative. It will make a great companion to use along side the bigger complete CCNA test prep books and also to use in the field when you need to remember those odd commands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for CCNA
it is an excellent book for your preparation for the CCNA.it is also very useful for the memorizing the commands that most used in the router confiruation in your job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource
This is a good resource to study with for the CCNA.It contains almost all of the commands that should be known for the test, and then some. All I can say is watch out for $9.00 shipping charges if you buy used! Don't "one click shop" it as you will agree to these shipping charges without seeing them like I did. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A Polymath Desperately in Need of Focus
Given Castells' huge range of understanding and the sheer ambition of his work, it seems a bit unfair to really criticize this book. Few writers would try to tackle the huge ideas that Castells covers here - vast theories about the state and direction of humanity in relation to the rising information society. On the other hand, theory-of-everything books like this, as frequently attempted by polymaths such as Fritjof Capra, have their own unavoidable problems which deserve to be criticized. When a theorist tries to combine knowledge of everything into a huge integrated and unified theory, the writing becomes monstrously diffuse and unfocused. That is the exact problem with this book. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Rise of Network Society
The Rise of Network Society brings up many important issues regarding globalization and what Manuel Castells calls the network society. He argues that the technological revolution that began in the late 70s in Silicon Valley has had a profound impact on all aspects of society. The changes, he argues are most apparent in the new relationships between the economy, state and society that have been formed. He suggests that an increase in the flexibility of management, a decentralization of production and an increased reliance on networking has caused many of the immediate changes taking place. Castells suggests that it is through the decline in the labor movement and the devaluing of the laborers that capital has become an increasingly powerful network. This, he suggests has caused networks such as labor, criminal or mafia groups, and financial markets to be realized on a global rather than local scale. By looking at how new relationships and identities are being conceived of in what he calls the informational age, Castells is able to theorize about the ways in which technology and information have will continue to transform society.
4-0 out of 5 stars Is information technology the culprit?
Many of the observations Prof. Catells made are valid, however the connection between information technology and the social problems are not very strong. The network states, global criminal society, wealth disparity, etc. are more or less the byproduct of globalization. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Use When Writing an SSL app.
If you have little or no experience with SSL, or OpenSSL, get this book. It explains the principles behind SSL, and then goes on to cover OpenSSL. The companion website opensslbook.com contains the latest examples.
5-0 out of 5 stars openssl programming cleanly explained

Begins by showing that a fundamental basic for networking programming is interprocess communication (IPC), and a requisite for understanding IPC is a knowledge of what constitutes a process. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read
This book must be by far one of the most valuable books I have ever read. I learned to love Unix/C programming from it and I have treasured the knowledge I have gained from it ever since. Mr.Stevens has passed away but this book holds some wonderful memories and discoveries for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic work - but in series need of updates as time goes on
I cannot fathom a guess as to how many times the books in this series have saved my in project work over the years. The only drawback with this series is that some publisher should endeavor to keep them up to date.Serious Unix system programmers must have copies of the complete series.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unix Bible

4-0 out of 5 stars Will do the job
This book will definitely teach you the new features in 10g and prepare you for the exam. The material definitely covered the test areas well, although often there are mistakes in the text and questions. The online tests and flashcards are very useful and (good or bad) provide additional information that the book does not cover.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the Ticket
Today I passed the OCP upgrade exam with a 52/60 score and this book is principally responsible. I used the practice exams to find holes in my knowledge and revisited the text in those areas. By the way, the 10g Upgrade exam is a lot more work than the last two upgrade exams. Prepare to spend more time studying. I have only one criticism: the book has to much detail in some areas(the lesser new features like merge, model, etc.) and leaves a few things out of the big-new features. All in all, this test covers 92% of the material for the test. Aside from the upgrade exam, the text is also an excellent reference and learning book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for DBA 10g Upgrade Test
This book gives you a CD with one 20-question exam per chapter, plus two 52-question "bonus tests," plus a 25-question "assessment test," plus a 250-question set of "flashcards."This is enough to get you into good shape for the Oracle exam to upgrade your DBA certification.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to become a good architect
The main intention of the book is to prepare a reader for SCEA exam. It covers all exam objectives except Legacy systems and Messaging. There is also very useful use case study for second part of the exam. The book underlines the most important behaviour of Java components. It is almost unbelievable how authors succeded to get all important information in just 180 pages. The book is very usefull for all people who want to design projects with qualities of experienced J2EE architect. Major part of the book is about EJB, UML and design patterns. Especially if you come from a development area you get a new view how to build overall architecture of J2EE projects and how to connect them with existing legacy systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Brief Review
The book gives a good brief review on SECA objectives and iterates through each topic in the exam. At the end, there is a sample project for the preparation of part II of the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Aid for the Enterprise Architect Exam
I recently passed the CX-310-051 exam and relied heavily on this book as a study guide. In my opinion, purchasing this book is a virtual necessity and I highly recommend it.It is well written, succinct and packed with useful information.

Plain and simple, some of the question are outdated. I hate having to go through unneccessary questions to study for this exam. It's bad enough that there is a ton of material that I need to know.

I used this along with Wendell Odom's CCNA Cert Library (for exam 640-801) and Boson's Netsim to pass the CCNA exam on the first try. This is worth the money as a useful tool to help you drill, but is a little bit dated (lots of questions about Cisco 1950 switches which are no longer on the exam) and is annoyingly produced - not all the tear-out flash card or study pages are actually perforated.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Linux networking software book to start with
I have read a number of books on the TCP/IP protocols and their implementations; both the original Berkeley (BSD) Unix TCP/IP stack and the Linux TCP/IP stack.I must say that this is the best of all of them. This book makes the subject very approachable for the newcomer to network protocol software but the explanations are detailed enough to satisfy an old dog like me.Benvenuti's writing style is clear and very readable. He liberally provides diagrams to illustrate the concepts he is discussing.
5-0 out of 5 stars TAKE THE LINUX NETWORK TOUR!
Are you a newcomer who already has some knowledge of networking? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Christian Benvenuti, has done an outstanding job of writing practical guide that represents a good starting point for anyone willing to learn more about the Linux kernal internals.

1-0 out of 5 stars save your money
The author probably has great insight into the subject matter;unfortunately, he does not know how to convey his knoeledge to the reader. The practice test questions are ambiguous and full of errors. There was probably minimal editing of questions and answers; as a result, a reader has to correct the errors and then try to fully comprehend the explanations to the practice questions. It is an inefficient way to study and learn. Head First, despite its errata (it has corrections at its website), is a superior product. This textbook is not worth the headaches.

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of errors
I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
3-0 out of 5 stars Reasonably good
I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP.However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion.I'm searching for an errata for the book now.(There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)

1-0 out of 5 stars What a difference!
Evereyone has an opinion on a book, so I thought I would share mine. Yes, this book has a ton of information, maybe too much for the exam.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book you need to pass BSCI
I used only this book as a reading material for the exam and I passed on my first try. This book contains a lot of valueble material about routing and it is good as a future reference for routing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for BSCI exam takers
I am using this Cisco Press Self-Study and Cisco Press Exam Certification Guide for BSCI exam. Generally, I find this book much helpful compared to certification guide. Most concepts are elaborately discussed with good lab examples and I have almost no problem understand all of it at first glance. (I have just begun career in networking while reading this book and I don't have in-depth knowledge of routing protocols). I like the author style of writing and I am looking forward to read another of her certification books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
if you allready have some c# experience this books is the next step u need for jump into the network programming... the books compile the 99% on vs 2005 and the examples are clear, they left no doubt when you are reading, if you want to invest some money on learning this is one way you can do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I used a number of books as references for a server project in C#, including the "TCP/IP Sockets in C#" book referenced in another review, but that book is more geared toward academic use (though to his credit I emailed one of the authors of the book regarding multithreading issues that were not addressed in print and he was very responsive, so I support the purchase of that book to round out your sockets library as well). Blum's book provided far more practical advice relating to my project and was the one I consistently returned to for reference. I had an issue not addressed directly in the book, did a Google search on it and found the answer...by the book's author in an online discussion forum!
2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't go deep enough into the real issues
This book is a good introductory book to network programming in general. While it attempts to cover all the general topics that you can find in reference books like "TCP/IP Illustrated", it seriously lacks the breadth and depth of such reference books and falls short of tackling the real issues of Network Programming with the .Net frameowrk in C#.
