3-0 out of 5 stars A fine primer, but flawed
If you're looking for a step-by-step-hold-your-hand-guide to ArcView then this is your book. However ...and this is a big However... you'd better learn each lesson thoroughly as you go along, because there is no index. Let me repeat... no index. Oh, sure there's pages and pages of ESRI software license agreement, but no index. That being said, it is a fine reference and a good place to learn the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best GIS book!
If you want to learn GIS, this is the book for you. It teaches you how to use ArcGis and ArcMap very effectively. I have bought and used this book to learn GIS and by the end (about 3 months) I was very comfortable doing my own GIS analysis, without needing the book in front of me. The examples and tutorials in the book which guide you through the material, are easy to follow but challenge you to learn the material, which is the goal. The assignments at the end of each chapter reinforce what was taught in each chapter very well. They are very applicable and after completing all the assignments I consider myself very capable at using this complex program. I have tried to learn many programs from books and found that, although GIS is probably the most powerful and complex program i've tried to learn, this book teaches you better than any other. It makes it very easy to learn GIS and apply its powers. The CD provided is adequate to learn the program as well. The book also can serve as a reference when doing other GIS work, as key commands and concepts are well organized throughout the book and are easily referenced.I wish all other programs had a book which was this easy to use!
1-0 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor
This is a text designed at the third grade level for Bryman/ITT Tech and the like. The Workbook is a picture book of examples, little of which relate to the assignments at the end of every chapter. Note there is neither index nor glossary. The CD's that come with it require validation and are timed to expire after 180 days. ESRI is proud of this book, but without justification. It lacks any sort of professional documentation for the ArcGIS and ArcMap programs and questions to workbench-support@esri.com are ansered by "see the book." They vary the theme a bit, but this is always the reply. But "the book" doesn't have the necessary data to acomplish the assignment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource and covers all topics in a sufficient and easy to read manner and definitely covers all the "elements".Anyone that is interested in Photogrammetry will find this book quite useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: Elements of Phtogrammetry
This book is substantially revised from the previous edition in 1983, some 17 years ago. Consequently, new topics are added, particularly on GIS and digital photogrammetry. The appendixes on least squares adjustment, co-ordinate transformations, collinearity equations and digital resampling are particularly useful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has it all!
Rarely does a book combine learning and fun so well. This book is very educational (it has helped make my kids wild about geography) yet has a humor that is simple enough for my two year old to laugh and sophisticated enough to make me laugh as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book is great for kids of all ages!My 6 yr old has literally not put this book down since we bought it (he even sleeps with it!!).It is a great and fun way for kids to learn their US geography.

5-0 out of 5 stars My nephew's absolute favorite book
My 8-year-old nephew Quinten kept checking this book out from the library so we finally just bought it for him.He absolutely loves it, has memorized all the facts about all the states except for the populations! It's a fun way to learn about our country and now we're talking about someday visiting all of the states together. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for deep technical understanding Spatial Databases
Last summer, when I was asked to present an "Advanced GIS" course for some of grad students in Geomatics, I was fortunate enough to find this book on my first round of serach. It is a great book with deep technical explanation of the subject and its applications. It is more a type of textbook than a book can be used by general public. However, public users may still find some chapters informative. I recommend this book as a grad textbook for those who need technical undetrstanding of spatial databases in GIS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A textbook geared to advanced GIS analysts
Very nicely written book. It is quite technical, with a very detailed and mathematically-oriented exposition. More suitable for a classroom teaching or for a GIS software developer/expert analyst than for the average user. Contains great chapters on representation of spatial objects and concepts, and computational geometry algorithms.4-0 out of 5 stars Many years of researches are collected into 1 place
I have been in GIS and graphics research and development for more than 10 years. GIS is a area that is mixed with technical and management issues greatly; therefore, there is very few truly technical books that is focus on computing issues in GIS.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Geography Bee Boost
This book has been an invaluable source, crammed with information, for me. By using it to study, it has greatly improved my chances in the state bee(April 2).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Prep.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy it - and read up in parallell on the Mapserver mailing list
Beginning MapServer should not be your only source of information on using MapServer. The book has a lot of usefull examples in it, but I am missing something. My main interest is on how to use MapServer through PHP /MapScript. In particlar I would like to know more on the bindings from PHP/MapScript to the object model in MapServer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very good practical guide for mapserver
The book is written in a very clear way and goes to the point explaining mapserver thru examples, it should be a reference book for those, that are starting with mapserver, but it lacks a proper cover of raster layers and WCS. Interresting is that the prefered database used, is not PosGIS but MySQL (normally MySQL is pushed aside by PostGIS in spatial databases projects) this was a pleasent surprise, since I normally use MySQL. Conclusion: get the book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GIS for the Urban Environment
This is truly a wonderful book. Although I plan on using it as a text book for some of the courses which I teach, it is also a fantastic reference and refresher for even experienced geographers. To my knowledge, it is the most complete and well written book dealing with GIS in an urban setting. The text is clear and simple without being simplistic, the labs are well designed and do a good job putting theory into practice, and the case studies are varied and interesting. Kudos to Maantay and Zeigler for writing what is sure to become the indispensable Urban GIS text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good introduction to geography and reference books
Being a glossary, this book is a dictionary of geography terms beginning with "archipelago" and ending with "zone".Definitions are short and incomplete, but enough for the target audience of 7-10 year olds. The illustrations are bold and colorful.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Dictionary Type Book!
We are homeschooling our 8yr old son. We wanted to make sure he had a good introduction to geography. As it turns out, He loves it! It's definitions are easy for him to grasp and there are drawings to describe each term. If geography knowledge is important in your home too, I suggest you get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book

1-0 out of 5 stars GOT PhD ?
I'm a GIS manager with 23 years of real-world experience, I am the program director for the GIS degree program at Tarrant County College where I also teach advanced GIS classes ... This book was way over my head. It's first 5 pages are a matrix of the authors and their academic qualifications - there are 36 of them. That should have been a warning of the complexity of the speach.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice alternative
As GIS continues to grow in many usages, it was inevitable that someone [actually a bunch of blokes] would consider an open source GIS package. The book describes one, GRASS; and specifically version 5.3. It offers many visualisation conveniences of the prioprietary packages. Very easy and intuitive usages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Packed With Texas Trivia - Highly Recommended!
This book is part of Sleeping Bear Press' State Alphabet series. Now, some of these books need some liberal stretching to get 26 verses of relevant information. Not this one, though. We're talking Texas here. If there's one state that could easily fill an ABC book, it's the Lone Star State. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars M is for Mitten
Like all of the Sleeping Bear Press books this one is also fabulous!I used this book for a literature lesson with a Michigan unit. The kids love the poems and I like the facts that go along with them. This is a delightful story that any child (especially a Michigan child) will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Children!
"M is for Michigan" makes a wonderful coffee table book, in my opinion.I don't have young children in the home anymore, but someday hope to have grandchildren and will greatly enjoy reading this lovely book to them. While we were in Whitehall, Michigan my mother bought a copy for herself as she loves well-written children's books.Later I went back to the same store and bought one of my own.I do refer to it from time to time and although I don't have a coffee table I keep it on display on my living room bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Triple Threat!
Amazing illustrations...great poetry...interesting facts. You'll find all three in this alphabet book about Michigan.Great to read aloud and great to read alone (again and again)....I highly recommend this book (and futurebooks in the series) to all elementary school teachers. My second gradershurried to grab this book after I read it aloud.Unique and such ahigh-quality book! B Is For Buckeye is another book in the Discover America State By State series, and Marcia Schonberg does Ohio geography a favor in her selections of places, events, and people.Bruce Langton illustrates this book with artwork that mimics a photograph in style.
5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all Ohioans and Ohio lovers
This book is enjoyable on all levels, especially if you are a born and raised Ohioan like myself, and my family. My mother, "Grandma" enjoys reading it to all her granchildren; who live in various cities within Ohio. Each page is an Ohio History lesson and enjoyable prose wrapped into one. It is essential for everyone's personal library. Our family loves it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Design ideas and scenarios
This book provides a good introduction of steps and principles in designing geodatabases and the importance of information products and identifying thematic layers. The book presents 7 complex models: streams and river networks, census units and boundaries, addresses and locations, parcels and cadastre, surveying federal lands, using raster data, cartography and the base map.For each model they present the features, feature data sets, relationships, and topology rules. Readers working in these 7 areas will probably gain most from the book.

The subject is considerably more specialised that designing a relational data base. The book is part of ESRI's ongoing way to publicise geodatabases, and hence ultimately drive demand for their products. So keep in mind that what is really being sold here is not the book but mindshare. Yours.

4-0 out of 5 stars analyzing spatial patterns concepts
This book presents concepts of analyzing spatial patterns include mapping where things are, mapping the most and least, mapping density, finding what's inside, finding what's nearby, and mapping change. Some of the best sections were tables comparing methods, for example: comparing standard classification schemes, contrasting mapping density versus building a density surface, methods to determine if features are inside another and straight-line distance versus network versus surface distance methods of comparing distance. There was no discussion of systematically analyzing variability in geospatial data, which would be important in understanding statistical differences. The section on mapping change surprisingly stayed away from discussions of level of trend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great place to begin
Some ESRI books are only extended marketing brochures. This is not. If you need a book that will help you understand GIS analysis, this is a great place. Mastering the techniques described in this book will cover 75% of the demands in the market. The book is referenced and so if you need more you can seek out the sources used to write the book.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Point
You have to take this book for what it is.An extremely basic, starting point for any would-be GIS Analyst. The book contains wonderful examples of how one may use GIS to analyze "real world problems" using both raster and vector models. This book in essence shows people how GIS can be used to analyze problems, without specifically showing them how to analyze problems.I would recommend this book for people who are new to GIS analysis and IT managers who's departments use GIS.While this book will not demonstrate how GIS problems are solved, it illustrates what kinds of problems can be solved using a GIS, any GIS.This book, although it is published by a software company, is not a software manual by any stretch of the imagination (and it was not intended to be one). The examples can be replicated on any commercially available GIS package.Read more
