5-0 out of 5 stars Learn GL, not HTML
I want to address an issue that I have heard from many who have used this book. THIS IS NOT A GUIDE TO WEB DESIGN AND HTML! This book assumes that you understand the fundamentals of HTML and basic web design. This book teaches you how to use the features in GoLive, which are just easy buttons for basic HTML and CSS coding. If you want to learn how to make web pages, you will need to also buy a book on HTML, and probably CSS. Once you know these fundamentals, GoLive is a GREAT tool to use to make them all come together. This book explains nearly every tool in GoLive and briefly explains their partner HTML coding. This book teaches you all the neat features that GoLive has that will easily create complicated HTML codes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but really is like a classroom...
Kind of tedious but effective, this book gets you working on a weird sample web site at first ("Virtech U. The School of the Future", or something) in a series of lessons that take seem to drag on and on and get you itching to work on your bands web site. But it really does give you a good idea of how the tools, windows and palettes work. It's definitely better than a "for dummies" book (not as dumb), but it's still pretty easy to wrap your mind around. Out of all the books I've been through for CS2, this one is by far the most comprehensive, and I'd recommend the Adobe books over any others. Very solid and accurate information, straight from the source. Thank You.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only the Basics
We purchased the GoLive software because it promised to do "everything" we could possibly want for our business website... we purchased the GoLive book because we needed help figuring out how to make this non-user-friendly software fufill its promises. The book only covers the simplest of web designs and does NOT go into detail regarding anything that we require. We were very disappointed.I would only recommend this book or software to those who want a very simple, very generic website. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Setting up a Web site ranks among the most deceptively simple tasks in all of computerdom. At the end of the day, you just edit documents (and who hasn't done that before?). Even HTML, the underlying language of Web pages, is pretty easy to understand. But once the creation process gets underway, it becomes apparent that HTML coding is tedious, and that page designers often spend hours figuring out tiny layout details. Adobe GoLive CS is meant to ease and automate the process of creating and maintaining sites, and Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Beginners
I am a technician by trade, but I am very new to the web building world. The last time I attempted to build a web page was when c-tags were in style. When I bought this book I knew almost nothing about GoLive CS.I have now completed most of the lessons in the book and I will say I was hard-pressedto find any errors.Trust me, I know error proned books (i.e.CCNA).This book is perfect for a beginner and will lead one by the hand. The lesson material on the CD uses good examples. The book is far from exhaustive, but it will get one started. There is a whole lot in GoLive that is left to explore. After reading the book I have been able to build a good sized web site with many pages, and with many different styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential tool to get started with GoLive
One thing GoLive is not and that is intuitive. This book starts you off with a hands on approach and after a time it starts to make sense. I used it methodically and did not find any mistakes mentioned in the other reviews - it helps to use one's head and guess where one overlooked, or mis-understood an instruction as the program is very fiddly. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall, a good introduction to GoLive
***This review is for the Revised Edition*** (FYI, I use the Mac version) Firstly, I have completed the whole book and have NOT found it to filled with errors. There are a couple of areas (specifically I think it was 3) where I had to do a double take and make sure I was following the directions as I was supposed to. Some confusion comes in because the names of some of the palattes are very similar to the names of the work screens, so you need to pay attention if the directions say "Click on the navigation palatte" or "Click on the navigation screen." At a couple points in the tutorial, it got a bit confusing, however it was nothing I could not figure out with some careful reading. It is not a complete reference on GoLive, as I feel I just scratched the surface with the text so far. I would recomemend this book to others basically because there is no other text to learn from. However I would like a more complete exhaustive text that goes deeper into GoLive. One thing I do fault the book for is not having a brief chapter of summary actions like "To fix orphaned files...do the following.."and then list them. There is no summary page or chapter on commands, icons and what they mean. I find myself knowing what I want to do, however I have to look it up to find out detailed instructions on how to do it. Like I said, overall, not a bad book, especially because there isn't anything else out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now i want all my books to be like this
One of the best books on software that i ever bought. I've been working with GoLive for quite a while now and just can't believe how many useful things i didn't know about it yet. So many shortcuts that enhance productivity, so many features that i paid too little attention to.
4-0 out of 5 stars good companion to a standard GoLive text
Adobe offers GoLive as a powerful tool to build pages in a website. It is complicated enough that the authors of this book present 200 tips, to perform common and useful tasks.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All GoLive Users
I have been using GoLive since the Cyberstudio days, and this book STILL florred me on how much useful information it contained. Everything from the "Well duh! I can't believe I didn't know that" to the "WOW" tips are in here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for beginners, too!
It's hard to find books on learning GoLive. The native Help files are just fine, but I like having a book next to me. After reading the reviews here, I assumed Tips and Tricks was too advanced and Classroom in a Book would be the one I'd need. However, as a rank novice, I have no experience creating frames, and Classroom barely mentioned them. Lo and behold, Tips and Tricks has three pages of succinct and understandable information. I'm finding myself largely able to put my site together just from using this book. Plus, as someone who likes to learn shortcuts ASAP, I'm digging the helpful little side notes on nearly every page. I'm not affiliated with Adobe in any way, except for being very happy with the CS2 suite, and now thrilled with being able to understand GoLive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for all GoLive users
I have been using GoLive for over six years and was blown away by how much new information I learned from reading this book.Though I consider myself a veteran GoLive user, I found literally dozens of new GoLive capabilities in this book that I can't wait to use.
1-0 out of 5 stars Worthless rehash of online help
I can't believe there are people with something good to say about this book.Probably friends of the author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent step by step book
Some items in the book may seem very basic but necessary if you want to learn GoLive the right way. For instance when linking - it really is a point and shoot system. I guess once you get the hang of it as the way the book describes the step by step procedure - you'll find similar attributes in MSVisio. This book may seem simple but necessary in its step by step procedure. Each chapter enumerates on each part of the creation of a professional html web page. I recommend this book if you want to learn how to use GoLive the right way, which will in-turn advance you to be more creative with your ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to the Series Title
This is my first venture into the CLIB series and my first venture into serious web designing tools. I needed help fast and I needed a self paced training that would keep me interested. This book comes through on both counts. What's more, it is doing it with style. The only thing missing from the classroom experience is interaction with the teacher.5-0 out of 5 stars Help's You Get Past the GoLive Learning Curve FAST

4-0 out of 5 stars Jeffrey McPheeters MyMac.com Book Review
It's arguable whether or not a picture is, indeed, worth a thousand words. It's not arguable that pictures AND a thousand words are the most effective means to communicate the features and methods of any particular software application, especially an application like Adobe's GoLive 6 which excels at filling your screen real estate with windows and palettes.5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to learn Golive 6!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and intermediates!
This is an excellent book for getting up to speed quickly on GL 6.I would not call it for the advanced user, but it's excellent for beginners or intermediates with Golive. The tutorials are clear and concise, and the book is exactly what it advertises itself to be - it gets right to the point.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Start
I found this book to be a very good introduction to Web design using Golive 6. The lessons are short but well presented, they are fast, and they can be used immediately to my own practice projects. Although the GoLive interface seemed so unassuming when you first open the program, it can get filled up quickly once you begin working. The authors made sure that you don't get lost amidst the plethora of palletes. There is also the confidence that I am reading the work of competent Golive designers who can actually communicate what they know and teach an unknown audience cleverly. Sam's formula, if I may venture a guess works well for this book: plain English, competent authors, short but lively presentation and an exciting software. In only a few hours, I was already making my own web pages and amazed my friends. This book is a very good start in Web design using Golive 6. It is one of my best and most useful books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I had never used GoLive before and was kind of freaked out when I first opened the program. Then I went to an Adobe seminar and one of the authors of this book was a presenter. He was really excellent and knowledgeable, so I decided to buy the book. I'm glad I did! I've now created two Websites and am starting my third. This time I'm getting paid! I know I still have a lot to learn, but this book got me up and running FAST. The best thing about GoLive is the way it works with my Photoshop files. If you haven't used this yet, check out the convert to banner trick!!!! Saves you tons of time!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best GoLive Book Available
I would give this book a ten-star rating if Amazon let me. This is simply the most comprehensive, useful, accurate, and readable GoLive book I have ever read.5-0 out of 5 stars One wonderful book.
I have found Real World Golive 6 to be a wonderful help to me in my html editing.I am on my fourth site so I am definitely a newbie, but have found this book to be quite powerful. It is definitely one that will stretch the ability of a newbie at times which I like because I don't need to buy a new book as my expertise grows. If you run into a tight spot with Real World Golive because it is over your head, try using the standard manual in conjunction with Real World Golive to get you up and running again. Highest regards for this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible for Beginners or low-Intermediates
While this book seems to have everything, it is laid out for someone who knows every term for everything. If you don't come knowing everything about HTML, CSS, XML, etc., forget it.There are far fewer hands-on sections, walk-throughs or advice than the other excellent Real World books. This book is devoted to telling you in great detail how to use the software with what you already know.I'm no slouch with HTML and have used Dreamweaver 3, but this book will leave many of us in the dust.Buried in the intro, the authors tell you that if you're a beginner, start elsewhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
I am a graphic design student. I know Photoshop well, have a pretty good sense of design, but know web design less well. For me, this book is excellent.
1-0 out of 5 stars A slick presentation but no nuts & bolts!
Was I ever happy to find this title!I bought it instantly. When I started to try to make some sense of where to start, I found myself jumping all around the chapters to try to get going with my first Photoshop/Go Live project.Today, I'm still stuck and can't find anything to tell me how to get from finished Photoshop layers to a finished Go Live site.Obviously I'm extremely disappointed with this book. The author seems to gloat over having done mega dollar sites and has friends in that club whom he quotes and shows samples from.I'm not there yet and perhaps the bigger problem is that Adobe never could make GoLive as user friendly as Dreamweaver (which they recently BOUGHT).
1-0 out of 5 stars notice the review ratings are padded by the author?
I am always extremely suspicious of any book where the author does a review of his own book and gives himself 5 stars in an attempt to influence buying behavior. Also note that there is another "name" that repeatedly assigns this book 5 stars 3 different times. Kinda makes you wonder about the book deosnt it?Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Two paws up from Lucky Bunny!
i'm a designer who knows nothing about html and the web. my web designer friend was supposed to work on my site and he blew me off. so, for my new year's resolution i decided to do it myself. i had all my content and pages done in adobe photoshop. i finished my site in about a week. i probably could have been done sooner but being ...(particular) i kept tweaking my content. this book along with "teach yourself adobe golive in 24hrs" saved me. both books are similar and there's some overlap but having these two books to consult was a life-saver. some areas are explained better depending on which book you read so they balance each other well. also, the price of both books is dirt cheap and well worth it. if you're a beginner this and the other book i mentioned are perfect. the visual quickstart guide isn't written with as much personality as the other book but is great nonetheless. i didn't have time to consume a "bible" because i wanted to launch my site fast and these two books really helped. i just wish had guts and bought these books sooner. after reading these books i'm ashamed that i was intimidated by the web. i did more in a week than my friend did in three months. the best part of doing it myself is that i can have control and update my site at will. ... if i did a design using a template or something not as graphic intensive i'd have literally been done in a few days. if you want something done do it yourself and with this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breath of fresh air for the beginning Web author
For someone just getting going with Web authoring, this book is a breath of fresh air. I have a stack of other, more expensive books but this one, with its clear, visual layout and lucid explanations, was the one that got through to me and helped me achieve results. What I appreciated was that they way it told me all I needed to know at each step -- but no more! Some intro books are guilty of TMI -- Too Much Information --or talking down to the reader. This author does neither. The book's stated purpose is to be an an intro to GoLive. In that sense, I think it succeeds admirably. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much garbage
I found this book to be very time wasting. Very few procedures 'get to the point'. At least 20% of the book is personal comments that have little to do with the subject at hand. The text meanders around a subject constantly without completely explaining how to do whatever the subject is. Almost all the figures in the book are from Mac systems while the text is referencing Windows. Most references to items in pull-down menus are for the Mac, which do not exist in Windows. It can take 10 or more pages to get through a procedure. The 'notes', 'cross references', 'tips', etc., have one going all over the book and never finding anything that completely describes whatever it is one is trying to do. The URLs mentioned in the book are very close to all being non-exitant. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book about GoLive there is
The GoLive 5 Bible is the best book about GoLive there is.5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
The previous reviewer is full of hot air. This book is great. It covers all aspects of GoLive, from the most basic to the very advanced, in an easy-to-read and easy-to-learn approach. GoLive is an amazing piece of software, and no matter how hard you try, you can NEVER describe ALL of it in one book. However, Deborah Shadovitz's GoLive 5 Bible has a succeeded in addressing all the major points of the software and explaining those minor points which are of use to Web Designers and Developers who use this application in the real world. It beats any other GoLive book I have (and I have them all!). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere
As with most tutorials, this one suffers miserably from being completely linear, and completely based on your working with their site, not yours. If you have a simple question about a simple operation in the software, it is just about impossible to find the information you need and get a simple answer.I find it worse that useless, it is infuriating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners!
Before I started using Adobe Go Live Classroom in a Book I had noknowledge at all about building a web site. I found the book very helpfulsince I was starting from a blank slate, but if you have any knowledge ofweb design at all I wouldn't recommend this book. It quite often refers tothe users manual for more in depth description and the lessons often leftme with a lot of unanswered questions. Overall, it proved to be veryhelpful for me though. I am confident that I could now build my own website, though it would not be a very complex project! I would recommend thisbook as a starting point to anyone who would like to learn the basics, butplan on investing in a more advanced book later on to learn the moreintricate details of the program.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful introduction to the software, but not enough
In the "Classroom in a book" I found that the steps were easy enough to follow and the examples were interesting, but I would have liked more help in the overall preparation of creating a Web site. While I wasable to follow the directions simply, as all the files were there, I feltthat it wouldn't translate as easily when I began my site, since I wasstarting from scratch & wouldn't have the luxury of pre-preparedgraphics, text and design. This book is a tutorial, so it lacks theinspiration and advice that another sort of book would offer. For Webdesign I prefer something more conversational. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Quantam Leaps
While they start with A-B-C's... they leap to E-F-G without including D.While you're flipping back to see where you missed it (it wasn't there) they leap to L-M-N-O and you can't figure out how.1-0 out of 5 stars no good
The dummies books are good until this one. It is difficult to start with golive but this book did not draw the pieces together so to speak. It was cofusingly written. In some cases, you can actually do the same commands etc in different ways and this book listed them in many different places instead of bringing them together. Also try to look up some in the index and I could not find them.Too much text and not enough visuals. I was to own it but sent it back as I was pretty disgusted with the book and the haphazardly written approach. ...

3-0 out of 5 stars Update to my previous review
After complaining to the publishers and sending a list of mistakes I found in the book, they agreed to refund my money and I also got a letter of apology from the author admiting that there were a lot of faults and that, indeed, it is a hurried rewrite of Golive 4 - great customer service, but sadly flawed book. ...
