4-0 out of 5 stars Expand Your Mind
This text is made up of several chapters, each chapter is a separate article that covers a lot of the issues not typically found in the IS curriculum. This text was used for an Information Policy course. I honestly felt that it was a good selection given the content for the course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Sensible and Interesting
Dan Gilmor here presents the attitude toward technology & journalism that any journalist will need to have if he/she will survive long in this new era. They need to embrace, or at least reckon with, the new media.
5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting read about the changes occurring in journalism...
If you ever wondered what is changing in journalism, then this book is for you. It not only describes the logging phenomenon, but also describes why the big media might not last.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journalist Passionately Embraces the Internet
Many people blame the Internet for accelerating the long-term decline of newspaper circulation, and think that the Internet is crippling the future of American journalism.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for translators and localization editors
I bought this book as on overall introduction on localization, for I'm about to do an internship for a localization agency.
5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Primer for any Localization Newcomer
This book is invaluable to any newcomer in the localization industry, whether you aspire to become a wiz engineer preparing RC-files for translation left and right, or a project manager with the need to understand every step of a project's planning process and actual execution. Industry standard methods, techniques and tools are discussed. Tips and warnings are conveyed. Hard to beat this book as a general yet comprehensive introduction. Any drawbacks? All I can think of is the fact that there is no separate chapter devoted to web site globalization - well, Bert, maybe you could add another 100 pages to the next edition to address this issue? I'll be the first in line...

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as complete as the description implied
If you are a translator localizing software under Windows, this book is for you!Buy it first before other books you might get later. However, Esselink views the computing world as if only Windows is worth discussing.A few pages are devoted to the Mac crowd and the only other OS mentioned at all was SunOS, and only in passing.Given Windows' large market share in the desktop market, it deserves substantial coverage. However, it is only one competitor among many in the server and embedded systems markets. With the growth in the markets for wireless access (web enabled cellphones) and PDAs, ignoring other OSs is a serious oversight.Read more

"We, the Net People, in order to form a more perfect TransferProtocol..." might be recited in future fifth-grade history classes, saysattorney Lawrence Lessig. 4-0 out of 5 stars Important ideas on the future in a wired world
As it is, I spend a lot of time thinking about systems and issues like architectures, law, policy, and even individual expectations. My 2001 book Developing Trust looked at how we can deal with the policy and technology issues that make our infrastructure trustworthy. Though I dealt with the Internet and Web specifically and showed specific examples of actual failures, some readers have suggested that the discussion was somewhat theoretical, or at the very least, blazing the way for practice instead of reflecting it. My recently-published Brute Force is very different, dealing specifically with the issue of Internet cryptography.
5-0 out of 5 stars Regardless of its style and structure, this is a IMPORTANT book.
Lawrence Lessig is not a writer, he is a lawyer. Don't expect his book to be easy nor entertaining. However, it is the more insightful writing of its time on the subject of mass media communication and control. For me the strong points are:
3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview for outsiders - common sense for many
The premise of Code is that the architecture of the internet and not any one country's laws controls what one can do on it.One clear evidence of architecture controlling our lives is our dependence on cars. Most American cities grew large after the car had become common.Hence they have limited transportation.Hence one is expected to own a car to live a normal life.Similarly the architecture of the internet will make certain activities much easier than others. The difference is the internet is currently being formed and we can choose what we want it to be if we act now (or in 1999 anyway).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Primer on Campaign Websites
It has become de rigeur for political campaigns of any size to have a website. They are indispensable for getting the message out, rallying the troops, raising money, and establishing and maintaining momentum.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for campaign staffers & junkies
As a campaign consultant and Web strategist, this book is my "go to" guide for everything related to the Internet. There are still many candidates who don't appreciate the importance of a well-created and maintained Website and this book explains step-by-step why such a dynamic medium is necessary in our era of 24-hour information. I highly recommend this book to all campaign staff members, political junkies and students who are studying about campaigns!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wake up call to all Americans
Before 9-11 This Book might not be looked at the same way it is today. Black Ice :The Invisible Threat of Cyber Terrororism brings around many misconceptions why an attack on our most important infrastructure could be carried out by Terrorists and not an Impossibilty. While This Book deals mostly with What if Scenerios, It also makes you think of things you thought were impossible. Take for example the sophistication of Hacking and Breaking into Our most Vital Systems. Terrorists know you must have training at a very high level and will Train Them at Schools in the U.S. Itself. Sound Familiar?
4-0 out of 5 stars It is not about the author
I have read this book and the reviews on Amazon.com.The author makes a good argument for enhanced cyber security in the USA.This is an issue that will be ignored by policy makers and the general public until an attack makes people pay attention to the realities of a computer controlled civilization. While other reviewers blast the writing style and hypothetical situations in the book it seems they have missed the point. It is not if a devastating cyber attack will occur, it is when.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Look at the State of Infrastructure Security
Dan Verton, journalist and author of The Hacker Diaries: Confessions of Teenage Hackers, has written a very enlightening book in Black Ice: The Invisible Threat of Cyber-Terrorism.

4-0 out of 5 stars taken from Journal of Law, Economics & Policy Volume 1, Number 2 (Winter 2005)
"The knowledge which can be gained from the study of this text is found in the placement that Solove's topic has within the broader debate surrounding the role of knowledge in society.Solove's points chime in right around the time we recognize that computers have great potential for advancing the spread and use of productive information.Computers provide tools capable of tapping into dispersed knowledge; but, we must simultaneously recognize that they are not miracle cures to be implemented from central positions of authority. The knowledge which they coordinate is valuable only in so far that it is dispersed and subjective. The hazardous notions of knowledge, in the Hayekian sense, would be those which claim to be more complete and universally applicable than they actually are. When based upon such false notions, actions stand to be erroneous, misinformed, and the host to unintended consequences."

5-0 out of 5 stars A visionary book
I regret that it took me so long to write this review, since I knew about the book before it came out. But since that time I have witnessed its premise proved true over and over again in the local political process. Something very special--new and not so new--is at work here. Today more than any time I can remember (including the worst of the '60s), responsible, hardworking citizens feel alienated and abandoned by the democratic process. What good can taking action do when such gigantic and powerful players are on the other side of the debate and show no respect for reasoned argument or even the rule of law? But pick a seemingly tiny, local problem--trash pickup or snacks in school vending machines or use of public parks--and here are issues for which my neighbors will go to meetings, pull out their wallets, and even endorse candidates. Cluster those interests in a vertical website, allow some accretion to take place, combine those online credit card micro-donations, and suddenly thousands of like-minded folks find out that they have clout--and lots to talk about not only on trash disposal, snacks, and recreation but also on sewers, land development, zoning, business licensing, taxation, representation, and war and peace.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind, worth reading
Not a perfect book (too much redundancy), but it's easy to read and covers things that other books do not. Here you get a look at how the Howard Dean campaign used the Web and its technologies, and you ALSO get a lot of insight into the use of social network software (SNS) by other kinds of organizations. Crumlish is a cheerleader, a Web believer, but he's not all yippee-yi-oh about everything (thank goodness).
5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book...
Christian Crumlish's "The Power of Many" changed my life, but more over changed my view on how the living web affects organizations and community organizing.I work for a political organization and everything that Mr. Crumlish discusses in his book, I'm currently examining and seeing how it can be applied in a political context. For the most part, everything we've tried concerning community building and decentralization, has come with much success.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sadistic Plot and Thin Characterization
This novel is as bad as the reviews suggest.
2-0 out of 5 stars Too graphic for me!
This book is senselessly graphic in my opinion.I have read a lot of thrillers, and I've encountered all kinds or villainous characters, but this guy takes the cake.I am almost sorry to admit that I read the whole book.I put it away more than once, but then decided to continue to see if the story would begin to make sense. It never really did.I found it hard to believe that a company that worked for American Defense could be this blatantly dishonest and evil.I also found that I didn't care for the main protaganist in this book - the young FBI employee Quinn Barry. She was definitely not a three-dimensional character. And how could one private citizen bring down the whole thing - the corrupt defense compnay, the CIA, the FBI and the DOD?Anyway, this will be the last Kyle Mills book that I read, so I gratefully come to the end of this review.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mills Hannibal Falls Short
I think that Kyle Mills was attempting to put himself on the map of the serial killer genre with this opus.Unfortunately, while his serial killer is certainly spooky and posses an inhuman intelligence, the story that surrounds him is sub par.I agree with several of these reviews who said that this story asks to much of the readers suspension of reason.Fantasy is a huge reason why the books of this genre are popular but they are only fun if the plot is semi-plausible.In this book we are asked to believe that the government, of elected officials, would knowingly use a serial killer to complete a top secret project. And if that were not enough they are allowing him to continue to kill women.I am all for government conspiracy but this is stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book on spam
This book is a page turner. The book provides a fast-paced account of spammers and spam fighters, their business practices and respective struggles online and offline. I had picked up the book, simply because I was curious about the motivations of spammers and often wondered: What kind of a person is a spammer and who would respond to those emails and actually buy from them anyway? This book can be an eye-opener and I certainly learned a lot from it. Fun side note: A lot of supporting material is available online, as the spam wars are being fought mostly online.Chances are, you'll find yourself browsing news groups and forums to research and find out more about the various people being discussed in the book. The author also provides a blog where he discusses spam and other topics close to his book.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's A Dirty World
After reading this book I felt the need to take a shower.
3-0 out of 5 stars too long, not enough technical detail
Maybe I am being unkind with 3 stars. The prose style is good. The author has done plenty of research into the background of the spammers and anti-spammers and the book is an intereesting read.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not worth it.
This is the worst methods book that I have ever seen. Not only are the examples vague, the explanations are useless. Most of the calculations that they force students to do are done by SPSS or Excel automatically. MicroCase is worthless as well, insofar as demonstrating what can be done in the real world with statistical modeling. Do yourself a favor and use Pollack's book instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the "Science" in Political Science
Microcase's workbook explains, in simple terms, how political scientists use statistics and the scientific method to explain political and social phenomena. The workbook in itself is a terrific accomplishment. Thehands-on exercises, however, are what really bring the concepts home to thereader/student. Using real social and political data, Microcase leads theuser through real statistical explorations. It's a great tool for teaching, makes a good independent-study course, and would be an excellent way tolearn a little about the "science" in poli sci on one's own. ... Read more
