4-0 out of 5 stars The Peoples' Intelligence Agency
This was in many ways a difficult book to read and is even more difficult to review. It contains a number of original ideas on intelligence reform, national security, and the general state of the world. Yet they are presented in a rather choppy style that relies rather heavily on numerous diagrams, charts, and tables as well as lists of thoughts. Still this book is worth reading because Robert D. Steele takes on the business of intelligence reform in a comprehensive and refreshingly different approach.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The New Craft of Inteligence
My deepest hope for the United States, and indeed, Earth is that decision makers would read this book, stew over it, let it keep them up at nights, and to finally get down to business. This book serves as a tocsin for the nation to wake up to the challenges we are presently facing and those that are just around the bend.
5-0 out of 5 stars Work at home as an intelligece analyst
Robert Steele, the maven of open source intel, explains why every citizen needs to start their own collection and analysis program. The first reason is so that she can understand the risk to herself of international crime and terrorism. The second reason is to protect her own liberty from domestic threats, private and public.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Johnson Had A Disability Following Lincoln.
The Civil War was not politically a 'bipartisan' war in anything like the sense what would be true of the two world wars.It was required to be waged as a party war.The Republicans became Union to throw people off. Theoretically, it was a Republican victory. It is legend that the ruthless quality of Southern reconstruction was the outgrowth of hatreds carried over from wartime and prolonged. The Northerners did not know how to manage their 'great victory' over the South; thus, it was a disastrophe -- to say the least. There was a conspiracy to take over and turn the white Southerners into slaves!Slaves of conscience, slaves to sin, not to Christ. 4-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful analysis that puts much of the blame on Johnson.
I read this book some time ago for a college course and it is one of those rare books that sticks with you. It came to mind again recently since Andrew Johnson is the only other President other than the current occupantto undergo impeachment. Toward the end of the book there is an excellentsummary of the impeachment proceedings brought against Johnson in thewinter/spring of 1868. It is enlightening to compare that process with whathas gone on today. But the book is much more than about the impeachment. Itcovers a variety of topics centering around the way in which Andrew Johnsonsquandered many opportunities to make Presidential Reconstruction work andto cooperate at least somewhat with the Republicans in Congress. My historyprofessor always said that McKitrick reached a little far with some of hiscomparisons and analogies. In this book, for instance, you will findcomparisons of the defeated South and how the North related to it in termsof the U.S. and Japan after WWII. There is social psychology in the bookregarding symbolic requirements that a victor in war expects in order toconsider his victory complete. There is imaginary scenario making with JohnAndrew and Wade Hampton. Far reaching some of these techniques may havebeen, but they also always serve to make the authors' points and the bookis quite focused despite its scope. I will also say that it is a veryentertaining book. Some of its accounts will make you smile, if not laugh. For example, you won't find many better descriptions of Lorenzo Thomas'sattempts to become Secretary of War as Stanton refused to leave his office.Where else can you find a description of Congressman Ashley, rabidlypro-impeachment, as an "occult mixture of superstition andlunacy" or a description of Ashley, Boutwell, and Ben Butler as a"baleful trio of buzzards..." Andrew Johnson's disastrous"Swing Around the Circle" in the Congressional elections also, though tragic in ways, has some very funny descriptions.Read more

The book is excellent. It really helped to conceptualize some of the things I would like in my next step, such as growth opportunities and people I can learn from. Somehow, it also helped me embrace some of my strengths and gave me some additional courage.

Editorial Review

There was a time when cryptography--the making and breaking of secret codes--was of interest only to spies, diplomats, and the occasional eccentric. Those days are over, and the reason, as Diffie and Landau explain, is that secret codes have become the key to preserving traditional notions of privacy at a time when technology is rapidly altering the nature of human communication.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom is Privacy-based
For those out of the crypto loop, the lead author, Whitfield Diffie was co-developer of public key encryption technology at Stanford several decades ago and stands as one of the most knowledgeable figures in the field of cryptography. Though the public policy aspects of cryptography are an important part of what this book is about, it is really a book with much broader implications, especially with the passage of the Patriot Act which strips U.S. citizens of any meaningful court oversight in the search and surveillance arenas. Now that the justice department has unleashed the Magic Lantern trojan horse on the public, the warnings found in this book pale by comparison since it was written before 9/11 events. The author delineates the many rationale for why respect for privacy is a good idea and how arguments to the contrary are basically flawed. Those in law enforcement and national security roles cyclically lobby for totalitarian capabilities, get them, become insatiable with MKULTRA type scenarios, get discovered, get their hands slapped and start over again when the headlines subside. Meanwhile taxpayers take a beating in lost jobs, ruined reputations, unwarranted jail time, suicides and the like. Since it is obvious that lawmakers have been delinquent in learning these lessons, what will happen when someone detonates a nuclear device in a large city and the justice department introduces legislation for mandatory implants? How will you be able to turn back after that? Tick, tick, tick...5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book

1-0 out of 5 stars some interesting concepts
There are some interesting ideas presented by Mr Myers in this book. But, for the most part the concepts are too old-school, naive and simplistic.Truth is, it would be hard for most modern day corporations using ERP systems, automated production and other technologies to apply the principles of this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Sensible approach to quickly getting a plan in place
While this book addresses contingency planning across the enterprise I found it extremely useful for a much narrower scope, which is assuring applications and systems availability, and service delivery.Read more

AOL's story--from its origins in a doomed gaming service through its early appearance as a much-dismissed startup to its current status as an often-maligned giant--is as irresistible as a heroic comedy. Kara Swisher chronicles the surprising growth of the world's largest online service, an organization for which everything apparently went wrong. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Never again...
I have tried the AOL's cd that gives free connection for 3 months, and when I wanted to cancel the subscription (because I changed my home address) it was impossible to stop the bank tranfers. As incredible as this may sound, AOL claims that they cannot cancel my subscription because I don't remember my password. Even when I am able to confirm all other information (credit card number, date of birth, social, etc), they refuse the cancel the subscription.
5-0 out of 5 stars Who Would Have Thought
This is a good book. Well written with lots of information that you would have never known went on behind the scenes of aol. A real page turner.

4-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING THE AOL IS STILL HERE!
Very fascinating and detailed look at the early and middle years of AOL(before the latest difficulties with TimeWarner merger). We see just how amazingly close we came to not having an AOL at all. Steve Case and his partners and co-horts came so close so many times to going belly up, yet the book also shows how others failed to capitalize on AOL's weaknesses and failed to understand its strengths.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pattern Recognition
Professor Theodoridis has written an exciting new book on pattern recognition. The topic is sometimes neglected, particularly in the fields of biomedical and electrical engineering, but it is essential to the understanding of signal and image shape on a mathematical basis, including similarities and differences in shape as well as how to extract, recognize, and measure the important components. Professor Theodoridis covers all of the classic steps in pattern recognition in great detail and in a readily understood fashion: sensors and pattern extraction, features extraction and selection, clustering, classification, supervised and unsupervised recognition, and evaluation of the system. Each section is backed up with computer simulation examples so that the reader can gain practical experience while reading the book. The author discusses essential concepts for computer programming of the pattern recognition techniques that are discussed. This work is necessarily mathematical, and therefore will tend to be of greatest interest to advanced students and practicing engineers in a variety of fields. Biomedical engineering is a rapidly expanding field that is key to the improvement of health care quality. There are plenty of biomedical examples including those in the section of the book on computer-aided diagnosis, such as for the detection of cancerous lesions in x-ray mammography. The section on speech recognition will be useful to engineers who are designing turnkey pattern recognition systems that include speech recognition as input and/or for use as a security key. Also included in the work are the most recently developed topics of interest including fuzzy clustering algorithms, and neural networks using genetic and annealing methods. This comprehensive work should prove to be an invaluable tool for the library of design engineers who work with signals and images. I heartily recommend it to all with a basic engineering background.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book to learn the subject
I bought this book to teach my students on the subject. I am a professor in computer engineering and PR was not my research focus. However, there are many topics covered in this book, which have become more applicable in our area of research (VLSI design). We found this book easy to use. The algorithms are clearly described and my students could implement them easily by just reading the specific chapters we need. We think this is an excellent book to teach ourselves how to apply various PR algorithms in our domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Infostructure in geopardy?
This is a book is on, the most unexpected subjects: Information anarchy in utopia, Information anarchy in dystopia and Information utopia?
3-0 out of 5 stars Are The Libraries Safe Anymore For Decent Folks?
Anarchy is a governing system that eschews authority.Oligarchy governs from, through, and for authorities. These ideologies feed off each other dialectically; they are rapidly remaking our global information ecosystem: the increasing speed and amount of information and the basic paradox of the digital world onto the real world.
5-0 out of 5 stars Anarchy for thee, not for me.
While many academics do tend to "fog" their arguments I think this book by Professor Siva Vaidhyanathan of New York University is a fresh, provocative, and extremely readable discourse on the nature of freedom and control in a world awash with technology that is often over-hyped and under-analyzed.Prof. Vaidhyanathan is a fresh voice analyzing the extremely important issue of, in his words, the "availability and accessibility of the substance of expression and thus the possibility of public discussion and creativity" (185). As a veteran of the culture wars spawned by punk rock's initial social (and later in a watered-down form) commercial success, I have seen the reliance on empty sloganeering and naive calls for anarchy from punks who couldn't organize taking out the trash if they had all week.Prof. Vaidhyanathan rejects simplistic calls for decentralization and anarchy, and instead provides a rich and nuanced historical context for why we should return to what he calls "Civic Republicanism," a return to the idea of public trust and mutual dependency that many Americans have lost sight of in the rather simplistic way most debates have been framed in the battle over public control of information. One of the virtues of Prof. Vaidhyanathan's book is that he does not provide any easy answer or EFF manifestos, just a reliance on the basic responsibility of human beings to engage in meaningful dialogue about the Faustian bargains involved in new technologies. And in an age that promises unparalleled control and unparalleled, resistance, a call for a meaningful and participatory dialogue is a breath of fresh air. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Half of a dissapointment
I had a high level of interest upon picking up this book, as cyborg technology and the philosophy behind it, after reading it; however, I have to say I was a bit disappointed.I gave it a rating of 3 stars, but I think it deserves more along the lines of a 2.5.This book professes to be about cyborgs, and it is, but Gray's definition of "cyborg" is so incredibly broad that it loses a huge part of its relevancy. He defines a cyborg as "a self-regulating organism that combines the natural and artificial into one system," and takes that as far as it can possibly go, calling unborn fetuses cyborgs if they are viewed by ultrasound, and the average citizen a cyborg for having immunizations.I am a cyborg because I wear glasses.
5-0 out of 5 stars A man with a vision
Not only does his book have a dazzling perspective into all the ways that the body is modified within modern practice he also brings it to a level that even the most novice of readers can grasp.Having been a philosophy student of Mr. Gray's in 1997 I must say it is not quite as enlightening as being in person with him, but it still shows his brilliance and true connection to the cyborg-mentality.Frankly if you can find a way to meet him, every second is worth it.But if you can't, this book is a good close second, and well worth your $ and reading time.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intriguing survey of changing images of civil rights
In Cyborg Citizen, the author argues that the creation of cyborgs calls for new definitions of citizenship. Examples can include Internet offerings and the legal and political issues raised by its use, and issues affecting the mechanization of humans with artificial parts. An intriguing survey of changing images of civil rights and liberties. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for thoughtful individuals.
A must read perspective to understand current mega-societal economic, legal and political trends.

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 Years Later and it's coming true
I first read this book in 1996 and found it very interesting. It certainly gives a good history lesson. Last year, I decided to reread it. I have found many of their predictions come true, and none have been proven false yet. Unfortunately, I do believe the authors underestimated the power of the OECD to bully so called tax havens into capitulating. It is now almost impossible to open an offshore account as an American citizen. Not because it is illegal, but because offshore banks refuse to deal with the reporting requiremtns for Americans. A must read for any enlightened individual.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very fanciful, not data-driven
This vision of the future reminded me of common errors on physics tests where the student leaves out a variable or two and makes a wildly incorrect prediction of an object's future behavior.People have many connections to a place, which do not depend merely on their own security or on currency fluctuations. These emotional and cultural connections will keep people from being entirely atomized and "at-will" citizens for a long time to come.
