Best explanation of Soc Sec I've ever seen in print.
I'm a retired Soc. Sec. claims rep and I rate this book as the best explanation of Social Security benefits I've ever seen.The writer's style is great and he has a nice, friendly approach.It's not an easy subject,but he explains things in a simple, understandable fashion.

Excellent.Easy to read. Much helpful information.
Mr. Landis has succeeded in making a very complicated subject comprehensible to the average reader.Allmy questions about how the system works were answered. I appreciated the fact that Mr. Landis wasemployed by the Social Security Administration for many years and was ableto give an insider's account of procedures and benefits.Many thanks forthis very helpful book!

Still the best Social Security book I've found!Read on...
OK, I'm the author and I'm biased.But the other Social Security books out there still seem to be either very poor-quality consumer guides (out of date, inaccurate, or jargon), or the "Social Security is a rip-off and it will crash in a few years" type. My guiding principles in creating this book: --accuracy (gained from many years working at SSA), --plain English, and --lots of concrete examples. There are a few areas where the book has become obsolete: --All the payment figures have increased with inflation. --The 1.45% payroll tax on Medicare no longer has an an earnings cap--it applies to all earnings, no matter how high. --The amount of Social Security benefits included in your taxable income has increased from 50% to 85% for high- income retirees. Ankney (Mellen Studies in Journalism, V. 4: Edwin Mellen Press) Technological innovations have affected human actions throughout history. As people developed new ways of doing things, dramatic social changes occurred. One of the best examples of this process was the agricultural revolution. About 10,000 years ago, people developed the ability to plant crops and to manage animals. This discovery meant that humans no longer had to track animal movements for hunting. Furthermore, the agricultural revolution resulted in people moving to locations where plants were abundant. Populations then cut back on hunting and food collecting so that they could settle in specific locations. Communities then began to increase in size. Thus, a technological innovationagriculture-played a key role in the creation of stationary communities. Short Stories...Loosely Connected
"Small Pieces Loosely Joined" is one of the books that I was really excited to read. Great subject. Great author. And sure enough, within each chapter, I has some really thoughtful moments. But on balance--and maybe this was intentional--the overall connection just seemed missing (as if the chapters were loosely joined...). As a set of short stories, the chapters are provacative. Overall though it left me wanting a bit more. A good book for a slow afternoon...and hey, there's really nothing wrong with that.

Everything is connected
This is a great book that helps define what the internet is and how it is effecting our lives. This book provides great insight and gets you thinking about what we do every day on the internet. Are we being more social or anti-social if we spend more time on the internet? We are creating the internet with every web page and every weblog. It's like writing a book that never finishes. Didn't tell me anything I didn't already know
A confusing little book - from all the hype you'd think there was some earth-shattering discovery enclosed therein.Read more

Could use some improvement
Being a student in an engineering department, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I actually enjoyed the course and the book, the enrollment of which was originally to fulfill the liberal arts requirement. Review
I think Media Now is a really good text book.It helps you understand how Communications Media begain, progressed, and will keep progressing.It is simple enough for anyone to understand.I think it is a great text for students.

I thought the textbook was reasonably priced and extremely informative. This has been one of the most beneficial textbooks I have bought while in college that I can use after this semester for more reasons than sitting on my bookshelf. Startling cogent analysis
What fun this was to read!It's so refreshing to read something that looks at the actual facts, crunches the data, and tells me the way it is, the way it should be, and how to fix it-- in clear language!Newman's argument is flawless, and I couldn't put it down.Read this to learn how little fish can team up to eat big fish.

Challenges conventional wisdom
After having the lights go out in the Northeast, it's worth reading a book that predicted the problems coming from deregulating "networked" industries.More broadly, it challenges the conventional wisdom on the Internet-- from making clear how much the tech boom was based on government regulation and spending as well as why it was the withdrawal of government that helped lead to the Silicon Valley bust in the last 90s. It's good for you and it tastes good too!
This author has somehow taken topics that, despite their importance, ordinarily would make my eyes glaze over with boredom and has through pithy writing and an abiliy to interpret complicated matters for the lay person acually managed to make them into a fun book to read.I highly recomend this book especially if it is not the type you would typically read. ... Good Book but Buyer Beware
When purchasing this book I was not informed that the required program to run the exercises found in the book is ArcInfo 9.0.Understand that ArcInfo encompasses all of the core ArcGIS functions.I bought this book having the ArcView version of ArcGIS and was unable to complete about 70% of the book.I looked in to upgrading to ArcInfo and found that the price to upgrade is approx $6000.So if you want this book you really must have the ArcInfo version of ArcGIS or you will not be able to follow through with the book. ... Great book.Very counter-culteral.Computers are attractive because they mean children need less one-on-one, and because companies can make money off of them.Healy tackles the important question, are they good for children? Failure to Connect - Failure to Explain
All right, all right.I get the point."Computers are bad.They keep our children from learning.Yet adults keep buying them.Therefore adults are stupid."I've read almost this entire book and I am really getting the feeling that Healy is beating a dead horse - she keeps pushing the same points over and over.Her arguments have some credibility, and her examples are generally valid.However, as critical readers we need to examine her basic premises for validity.I think that her basic premises are over-stated and somewhat simplistic. It is hard to tell how Ms. Healy's book contributes to the field of educational knowledge regarding kids and computers' use. The first problem with the book is the lack of a clear focus in a specific audience. Is she writing for parents? Is it a book written to help teachers ("How do we teach kids this skill"p.252)? Or is it addressed to scholars in the field?That does not seem to be clear and the book "failures to connect" with its audience.Read more

Accurate
As one who was there for this entire timeline, I can attest to the accuracy of Mueller's book (and the suggestion to read Crocker's account is misguided, as his account is about the most biased treatment available. Be warned on that as well). Be Cautious In Accepting This As a Historical Account
Before accepting too much of this author's version of history, PLEASE read Dave Crocker's review in "The Internet Protocol Journal" (December, 2002, pages 27-30).Dave lived through this era as a major participant and his review is well worth the read.

Excellent Work!
Mueller's work, recounting the Internet's Domain Name Wars, is entirely "interesting."Little is widely known about the history and origins of the Internet; what many think they know constitutes little more than mythology.Here is an excellent recount of the history of the Internet's development, and how conflicts with the naming space came to be.This is required reading for those interested and concerned with the potential success or failure of the Internet governance experiment.This is a continuation of a long history of excellent work by Mueller and is well recommended. ...
