4-0 out of 5 stars Worth considering
This book contains information that is worth thinking about. Most details are well documented, and while some of it seems out there, one has to wonder about the author's death not too long after this book was published. Hmmmmmm...

5-0 out of 5 stars An Update on his Classic Book
Jim Keith (1949-1999) died suddenly on Sept 7, 1999, as the government was finally revealing it covered up some of the truths of Waco. Most people don't get Keith's writings, that as a reporter he reported, with humor andinsights, with tongue-in-cheek intellect. In the future when the mystery ofthe helicopters, be theyblack, green, or dark blue is revealed, interestedhistorians will refer to this book. Not for the wild theories of UNstormtroopers or other items Keith merely was repeating, but for the factthat things were seen, unknown and unidentified, which may have had a linkto missions not yet fully understood. Was there special helicopters overWaco? Yes, of course there was. This book gives a sense that things arehappening which may be merely a part of a plan still unexplained today.Unfortunately, Keith will not be around to see his works appreciated withinthis new enlightenment. That's too bad. And sad.But his books remain, forall to mine for the little gems. Don't be dismayed by the theories. Look atthe data.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beware the Black Helicopters!!!
Mr. Keith does a very good job of blending material from eyewitness accounts, newspapers, and books into a series of chapters that will keep the reader very interested. You will want to know more after reading this. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Learn How The Bad Guys Do It
This is an easily understood novel that is both interesting and informative about how hackers attack applications. The first half of the book is a simple story that keeps your interest, and the second half is a text book on the history of voting machines and techniques for reverse engineering computer software. You have to want to learn something about hacking to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scary that it is true!
The Mezonic Agenda: Hacking the Presidency is a novel, but it can happen.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good 'edu-tainment' book...
When I first saw this book I was skeptical of the writing. How could a book about computers and the Presidency be even remotely entertaining? When I looked at it closer and discovered the educational prospects of the book, I got a lot more excited. The story is a bitminimalist, although well-written and enjoyable.I found the story more suspenseful because something like this could actually be possible, given the insecurity and non-accountability of existing e-Voting systems.Security professionals may not learn anything from the book or the accompanying material, but for the general populace with some computer knowledge, there is some 'edu-tainment' value here.

4-0 out of 5 stars covers the main ideas, with little maths needed
The book is good as befits its subtitle. Indeed, a very short introduction, with only a minimal evocation of maths background. But there is enough qualitative explanation so that you can understand the broad historical development. From the Caesar Cipher to a Simple Substitution Cipher to a Vigenere Square Cipher. Then, the text goes into modern ideas, all of which involve using computers to encrypt and decrypt. Notably the invention of the public key system. Truly quite different from all that preceded it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable retrospective on the nineties in technology
It's usually a good sign when picking up a collection of essays to find that they have been previously published in some noted periodical such as The New Yorker or Harper's or in this case (with one exception) from The New York Times Magazine.Gleick's focus in these thirty highly polished essays is information and especially the Internet and how the Internet and related technology are changing our lives. There is a personal, and an "I lived it" quality to the writing that I found engaging.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uninformative Essays about the Information Age
In such a fast-moving field like information technology, it is not fair to criticize a five year-old book for being outdated. That is an issue for some of the essays here, such as the submission by Nicholas Baran from the mid-90's, in which some inaccurate predictions about the development of the Internet are made, like an incorrect perception of how wireless access technologies would develop. While that's an issue that can be mostly forgiven in hindsight, this book suffers from a more timeless problem of lack of usefulness. The most successful essay here is the introduction from editor Robert McChesney, with serious ideas about the future salience of capitalist markets in light of the cyber revolution. This is purported to be the focus of the other essays in the book, but the results prove otherwise. Submissions range in an uninspired fashion from ivory-towered theoretical exercises (Ellen Meiskins Wood) to non-analytical economic or technological histories (Jill Hills and the aforementioned Baran). A conversational lecture from Noam Chomsky is out of place, while his colleague Edward Herman merely summarizes his book that should be read in its entirety for any true insights. The submission from Michael W. Apple on the Channel One network in school classrooms comes quite close to a very important analysis, but ends abruptly with a diversion to the author's previously published works. In the end, a few informative essays on globalization issues (Peter Golding) and grassroots politics on the Web (Ken Hirschkop) can't save this book, as it does not accomplish the goals implicit in its title and introduction. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very important book
The importance of the contents of this book cannot be overstated. It is a collection of articles written by various experts in the field, which works well as it gives the reader a balanced view. Space prohibits a thorough review, so a list of some important highlights in the book is in order: 1. The discussion on applications of biotronics: bacteria that can detect single molecules of chemical and biological agents. 2. High-power radio frequency (HERF) weapons and their effects on biological systems. 3. The use of superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDS) to measure the magnetic neural activity of the brain. 4. The discussion on "assassination politics". 5. Cognitive maps used to visualize belief systems about information warfare. 6. The afterward of the book, which is the best part actually, for the reason that the author embraces an optimistic view of the future of the information age. He lists the "Ten Commandments" of computer ethics which should be followed by all individuals.

3-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
Very informative, a great insight as to what is possible. This should make many people more aware of the need for some sort of security on their systems.

Editorial Review

George Washington University law professor Jeffrey Rosen offers a vigorous defense of privacy in this book inspired by "the constitutional, legal, and political drama that culminated in the impeachment and acquittal of President Bill Clinton." He is particularly piqued at Ken Starr's investigation of Monica Lewinsky's private life, including her book-buying habits and the love letters she stored on her computer but never sent. "Privacy protects us from being misdefined and judged out of context in a world of short attention spans, a world in which information can easily be confused with knowledge," writes Rosen, who is also a legal affairs writer for Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Topic, Mediocre Effort
I bought this looking for some insight into the increasingly popular privacy movement.I got what I was looking for, but it wasn't a GREAT book, just a good book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dry and distant...
I bought this book expecting something more than opinion on database policy, and was never able to force myself to finish it.I found no evidence that the author has ever realized that coercive, devastating assaults on our privacy can be conducted by our neighbors, friends, and co-workers using radio technology and other covert surveillance devices.4-0 out of 5 stars Privacy under siege in a modern day "Panopticon"
Let me get my two main criticisms of Rosen's book out of the way first:1) I am not a legal scholar (or a lawyer), and found the book to be a little too technical, even somewhat tedious at times, although it is basically well written and even impassioned; and 2) I also thought the book focused somewhat obsessively on one particular privacy-related issue("sexual harassment"), and specifically the argument that much of what we classify as sexual harassment would be better dealt with as "invasion of privacy."I felt like this could have been summarized in a few pages and not have taken up half the book!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It is worth reading
The author analyzes how East Asian countries make their economic development successful with state autonomy and also tells the difference among those countries, which means that if other countries wants to copy the above models, they need to decide what model they could apply.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
An excellent comparative study of efforts by developmental states in India, Brazil, and South Korea to break out of preordained "comparative advantage" and develop modern high-tech sectors for their respective economies. Based on extensive field research in all three countries and supplemented by thorough use of archival evidence.

4-0 out of 5 stars The mechanism of developmental state
This book is regarded as de facto classic in the tradition of developmental state. The strategy of developmental state is the denial of extant hierarchy of comparative advantage. To achieve high growth rate, there should be high return sectors. But such sectors, in general, have no relation with developing countries. Then, should developing countries rest with agriculture or labor-intensive industries? Not necessarily. Such sectors tend to be low value-added, in other words, with low growth prospect. If you dont have it, then make it! Its the strategy of developmental state. But its no more than what to do. There was not satisfactory conceptualization on how East Asian developmental state put that strategy into practice. Amsdens Asias Next Giant (reciprocity) and Evans this book marked some conceptual leapfrogging.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GIS and City/County Management Systems
Cory Fleming edits THE GIS GUIDE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, an important guide for any government official considering GIS approaches for blending the mapping technology into city or county management and analysis systems. Case studies are presented from across North America to illustrate successful applications of GIS to specific government needs, from monitoring weather to fixing potholes. From how GIS works to implementation challenges, THE GIS GUIDE FOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS is a 'must have'.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "user friendly" introduction and instructional on the use of geographic information systems for local governmental authorities
A senior project manager with the International City/County Management Association based in Washington, D.C., Cory Fleming draws upon his considerable experience and impressive expertise to compile the professional observations of six contributing experts to develop The GIS Guide For Local Government Officials into a thoroughly "user friendly" introduction and instructional on the use of geographic information systems for local governmental authorities. This is a specialized mapping technology that enables local units of government to coordinate their resources, exercise judicious caution in the expenditure of funds, and facilitate future city and county planning. From monitoring storm drains to fixing potholes, the breadth and variety of municipal and county governance issues that GIS technologies can assist with is enduringly valuable.
