5-0 out of 5 stars A great RE-read!!
I first read this book in 1999 and enjoyed the narrative style and the accounts of various Internet users. After re-reading this book, I realized that Annette Markham has completely captured my attention theoretically. The prose is quite easy to read, which makes this book easy to skim. But a slower and more focused read gives quite a different picture, which I missed in my first reading. There is quite a lot of theoretical work which occurs under the surface of the narrative account.5-0 out of 5 stars A fun and provocative read...
Too many books on cyberspace are predictable.Once you know the theory (marxism, uses & gratification, etc.), you pretty much know the rest without reading it.Such is not the case with this refreshing book. Cyberspace is still a relatively new phenome non and it is a seriousmistake to take our old theories and methods and force them into a moldthat doesn't fit. That sort of work produces overdetermined results thatare boring.Markham's book is NOT boring. It is a fun andthought-provoking account that will serve as a terrific starting place forserious inquiry about on-line experience. It would be useful andinteresting for academics and nonacademics alike. If you are interested inthinking seriously about what happens to our "selves" when we goon-line, and you want a book that is well-written and engaging, you willlike this book.1-0 out of 5 stars Ahistorical and incoherent
A triumph of flimsy style over hollow substance. There is nothing of value in Markham's book except for the fact that it is just one more addition to the increasing ahistoricism of new autoethnographic work in communicationstudies. The author contradicts herself with abandon and seems to betranquilly unaware of the history of social studies of technology. Therepositioning of self, testfied to so glibly in the text, is not explainedwith reference to anything other than the author's own experience. How andwhy the self is positioned as such under modern capitalism and newtechnology is not a question that the book bothers to address.Surelytheory-building in an academic discipline amounts to more than exploitativerecounting of one's own online experience. What of context? What of theory? What of accuracy? If Markham's book serves any purpose at all, it is toreduce academic research to tabloid-like investigative journalism. Some ofus might be averse to such a move, but Markham clearly is not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
Fiber and wireless, he is amazingly correct in predicting the technology trends, can't wait to see what he is going to talk about in his next book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a TV treatise! Better prognosticator than Popcorn!
George Gilder has been hailed as one of the foremost science and technology writers for Forbes Magazine. His book, Wealth and Poverty, was one of the "Bibles" of '80s supply-side economics. Although I may not totally agree with his economic views, his extensive research of telecommunications and how this vast and intertwined conglom of industries affects humanity is unquestionably thorough, thought provoking, intellegent, and timely. Some craggy rocks which potentially ground Gilder's predictions of a tidal wave on the technoscape are FCC auctions; mis-directed consumer advertising; lack of consumer education on what cell phone towers "really" are (you know, fear of radiation, cancer scare, etc.), and the inability of competing telecoms, cable companies, computer megopolies, etal to install fiber-optic cable and satellites at a break-neck enough pace. All I know is, wherever TCI has tried Internet services, the "Alpha Test" consumers not only wouldn't give it up after the test was over, some people would not move to an area where they couldn't purcase the service! So readers: Ride premiere prognosticator Gilder's technowave, and be one of the first to hang ten in a prospective post-Mellenium promised land! And be sure to pick up his other books, such as Microcosm. I believe he is updating this for 1998, and he's "write-on" in his first edition. Surf's up!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gilder is the best in predicting technology / economy.
As former Director of Broadcast Engineering for Alabama Public Television, (America's oldest PBS Network) I can say that my 38 years of Telecom, Technology, and Broadcast experience strongly suggests that everthing I've ever read by George Gilder is excellent. George's books and Forbes /ASAP articles are an excellent reference for anyone concerned in how technology has and will continue to affect the economy of the U.S. and the World. Editorial Review

As social, political, and business forces struggle to come to terms with new communications technology, innovation doesn't progress--it freezes up. This sociopolitical and economic gridlock is what Neuman, McKnight, and Solomon are calling the "Gordian Knot." The authors examine how similar gridlock has happened in the past with other new technologies; for example, during the development of the railroad, among the telephone companies, and, more recently, with the international and inter-industrial wrestling matches over High Definition Television. The introduction of each of these technologies has involved a clash of economic interests among industrial giants or would-be giants--all of which have struggled to control access, standards, and proprietary technology in the emerging industry.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to telecom policy issues and history
This was the first book I read about information and telecommunications policy, and it made me feel like I was not alone, lost in the confusing jungle of telecommunications: the historical baggage this field carries with it makes it difficult for any author to approach. However, Gordian Knot does a good job: comparing the present with the past (railways) and offering a solution that would really promote competition in communications. This book was read for an intro course on telecommunications policy, and is something I would suggest all people interested in the debates surrounding the development of infrastructure and competition in telecommunications should read. To supplement, I would suggest: Technologies of Freedom - Pool, and Brock's 'Telecom Policy for the Information Age'. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still fun to read 10 years later...
At 225 pages you can breeze through it rather quickly, enjoying afascinating look at young people with the commitment, energy and intelligence it took to hack and learn new systems. It was a time when the phone company was deregulated but Ma Bell's offspring still held quite a lot of power and were irresistible to phone phreaks and hackers. If you don't expect too much you'll enjoy a look into the hacker sub-culture. They were explorers and not criminals. I attended several conferences with these guys in later years and can report that their pursuit of knowledge is still fascinating. Social engineering is still the best hack for me. Plik!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on hackers sub-culture
Actually this is a great book about the hacker sub-culture, indeed one of the bests I have ever read. This book describes very well the whole story and social aspects of New York City hackers but fails when dealing with technical aspects or lacks it. I can afirm it's a good book for people who are intersted to know how poor guys in Queens, NY, rised from nothing to create one of the most notorious hacker gang ever and to improve knowledge about the late 80's and early 90's american hacker scene.

3-0 out of 5 stars Journalistic view of one event
This is not a book about hackers; it's a book about some specific hackers who happen to come after much of the action was concluded. Even more than that, it's a book biased toward New York which contains every implied slander of Texas that one can meld into a narrative about hackers. I like the description of MOD, and thought the authors did an excellent job of building up the character of these kids, but find that for the size of this book, it missed an absolute raft of important knowledge. Why do people hack? What, besides damaged egos, makes it thrilling to have forbidden knowledge? How could our society be so incompetent as to leave these giant security holes everywhere? And finally: what was the global hacking culture like, outside of the spacy little land of New York City? The boys from LOD are treated as props and their contributions ignored, which is infuriating to someone who is familiar with the goings-on in the computer underground at that time. Also, technical writing is not difficult, and while this book tries to stay non-technical, I have to ask "why?" There are interesting details which are overlooked and could have been conveyed in English. These authors do a credible job of buildup, but then hype a few incidents into some metaphor for cyberspace, and consequently halve the strength of their book. I would recommend this to people who cannot simply pick up a copy of "2600" magazine or "Phrack" and figure it out for themselves, but not to anyone who cares about the heart, soul or brains of hacker culture. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars the effects of communications technologies on the city
Because I believe "place" matters in a world where the virtual life is becoming more common, the work by Christine Boyer, an urban historian at Princeton, caught my eye as I was skimming the dust jackets in the new book section at Apple Library.2-0 out of 5 stars Rhetoric hyperbole.
If breakdown of the community is the omen to the subsequent alienation and dematerialisation of the human body, it has then started since corporate America introduced super-capitalism. Such inevitable development has beenhinted at in advance by Kierkegaard's existentialism. What evidence isthere to suggest that cyberspace and technology will substitute thematerial self with a immaterial self and obliterate urbanism? What do wehave to fear but fear itself? Bill is rich and doesn't give a damn, andReagan is still alive. The author might as well present to us a cityscapereminiscent of Mad Max and call it reality for it's no more believable thanthis book. Finally, bravo! to the effort of the author for writing such avast and complex amalgamation of sources and ideas and for arriving at suchan uninspiring conclusion. The quotes and sources alone make interestingreadings although I often wonder about their relevance in the wholesubject. This book doesn't inspire much passion. It maybe crafty in itscolourful language and high-flown metaphors. Sadly, it lacks the extrasparkle. :<...... ... Read more

Editorial Review

Hill and Hughes conducted extensive research online attempting to answer a basic question about the role of the Internet in the political scene: how do regular citizens actually use the Internet to discuss politics? In their research, they found a number of surprising things. For example, the lasting political content of the Internet is primarily conservative, yet when ongoing interaction is monitored it turns out that liberals outnumber conservatives among the actual users. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Foundational Book for E-Commerce

This is really a very good book, and very timely as well.Too many books about the Internet, including books about politics, investing, relationships, privacy, etc., are simply pie-in-the-sky theorizing.Thisbook, focussing on politics, actually provides evidence through what lookslike lots of research to prove its assertions.I highly recommend thisbook to people interested in something a bit more down to earth and lessbreathless about politics, the Internet, and the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great book by someone who knows what he is taking about.
Everyone and their brother is writing about security, but this book is different. The author is an expert and knows what he is taking about.5-0 out of 5 stars excellent!
Rattray lays a framework for the analysis of a growing threat to U.S. national security in the twenty-first century, information warfare (IW). While the number of studies on IW have steadily increased over the past five years, Rattray's book is unique in its sober examination of the hurdles organizations face in dealing with new technologies, as well as in its reference to the history of strategic warfare. This volume contributes to the growing literature on information warfare. It differs from other books, such as Sofaer and Goodman's Transnational Dimension of Cyber Crime,Denning's Information Warfare and Security, and Schwartau's Information Warfare in its historical analysis of U.S. strategic thinking in the inter-war period. It should be recommended to graduate and advanced undergraduate students.----J. Granville, Stanford

It should be recommended to graduate and advanced undergraduate students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very exciting book!
I admit I have not read the entire book, but what I've read so far has been very interesting. Its a book worth picking up if you're interested in Microsoft and/or the Microsoft trial of the late 90s (U.S. v. Microsoft).
2-0 out of 5 stars US V MICROSOFT
The book does not go into real detail.Everything in the book you could have learned from the nightly news.No new discoveries or anything.Book is filled with Newspaper articles that repeat the same thing over and over again.I dont think they could have mentioned that microsoft owns more than 90% of the worlds operating systems any more than they did.It was on every page!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good story.
Looking for an excellent story that seems to deliver both sides of the law suit brought against Microsoft, than this book is a must read for you. The authors take on a delicate subject and give you the best opportunity to make an informed decision.Read more
