I am a Poli. Sci. student in New Haven, Connecticut.Last semester I took a course titled, Politics and the Internet- An Online Revolution.The course was interesting but the professor, while extremely brilliant on a wide range of political issues, was 74 years old, and not as internet savvy as he should have been.The text was dull at best, and while I will not name it, was too technical, poorly researched, and truly did not teach me a thing.With my grade, and GPA on the line, I searched for any alternative.I found Doctor Klotz's book here on Amazon, and bought it.I was very lucky to have found this book.It is detailed, but not bogged down and boring, and is clearly well thought out.I have also been able to use this book as part of my research on the rise and fall of Howard Dean.I want to thank Dr. Klotz for writing this book, and for saving my grade!

Fascinating!
This book chronicles the exploits of a young computer enthusiast who managed to break into an alarming number of computers, mainly by sheer perseverance.The book is also the story of the people who hunted this early cybercriminal and how he was ultimately caught.
Easy and fun read.
I am always up for true computer crime stories so I purchased it even though other customers dumped all over it.The book was very accurate (minus two inaccuracies in terminology) and easy to read.It did lack suspense but then again I read it for the historical perspective and not so much as a "who done it".Overall it was a fun read.Not as good as the The Cuckoo's egg but still worth reading.

Worst piece of crap ever written about hacking
This book is the worst piece of crap I have ever read.Same old sob story about the feds, etc. not taking computer crime seriously and being slow to get moving...blah, blah, blah....They figure out who the hacker is halfway through the book...so...no tension, no suspense, nothing....Read more

I checked this out from the library and was glad that I didn't buy it without reading it.It has very few equations and algorithms, and is more of a general overview or listing of computations done in GIS.Those hoping for a cookbook for geometric and analytic geography operations would best turn to Keith Clark's Analytic and Computer Cartograhy or a even good survey handbook for a better overview of the most important algorithms and formulas. ... A NEW DEVIL TO HATE
The WAR OF THE WORLDS, a not very original title, is a long essay with forebodings of a dystopian ending to the computer revolution.It is a critique of the cyberist or digerati world view.In short, Slouka doesn't like where the digital revolution is heading.There were a few good metaphors presented: Reality has the maximum bandwidth and the goal of digerati is to maximize the broad-band width of cyberspace.These computer fanatics want to generate a virtual reality indistinguishable from real life.So Slouka calls all these computer-TV generated images harmful illusions.
Read this and Postman
Read this book and any book by Postman.IT's quick read, a little repetitive, but you'll learn a lot just from the stories he tells. I think he is exaggerating the effects of all this technology a little bit, but his points are valid.Comments about people thinking they are "gods" over nature or cyring about the death of their virtual reality fish; this is a major heads up. He comments about teople who aren't enjoying nature anymore by choice and who are plugged in to the net for days at a time.

I Wanted More
This book reads very quickly.Mark Slouka's writing style easily holds my attention to the end.Unfortunately he sacrifices depth of analysis for interesting rhetoric.This timely topic needs more thought and I thinkthis book comes up way too shallow.Slouka's excellent writing abilitieshere seems to indicate that he could have taken more time and thought andcome up with a better, more insightful book.He tries to steer athoughtful middle course between technophilia and luddism, but I don'tthink that he really found it.Read more

This is an excellent book for individuals interested in helping people via technology.The topic is not only about counseling via a distance (not in an office, face to face) but also about the history of learning via technology.Learning and counseling cognitively are very similar and have similar technological uses.The editors do a good job of presenting information on theory, practical issues, phobias against technology use with people in need, as well as implementation issues.A wide variety of topics for people interested in all aspects of distance learning and communication.
