This book is both scholarly and entertaining, for it describes the history, influence, and possible future of today's most fascinating tool, the Net, and does so through the lens of a person whose career was focused first on telecommunications and later on computers. Just as these have come together in the Internet and elsewhere, so does this story, which for Simon began in 1966. How Copyright Law Really Works
In the field of political economy one looks at the real-world effects of laws and regulations, how they are applied, and who applies them. Here Ronald Bettig applies this type of analysis to the specific areas of copyright law and intellectual property, in which there is not just the letter of the law, but also the concentration of power and control that vested interests can achieve through the application of that law. The exercising of copyright law is usually accompanied by rhetoric about compensating the creators of original content. However, look closely and you'll find that legal actions are often enacted by large corporations, who have gained control of the copyrights for creative work, in order to preserve their own profitability. Another issue is the public domain and free marketplace of ideas that are guaranteed by the constitution, but are increasingly restricted by power grabs from corporations. For example, the amount of time before a copyrighted work enters the public domain has been miraculously increased by lawmakers every time Mickey Mouse was about to graduate from the clutches of Disney.

Digital Cartography Basics
This a pretty handy and no-nonsense book written by people who know the subject too well to indulge in pointless digressions. Though it looks like a handbook it is certainly more than that. Pretty good for anybody who is new or even trying to review the basics and the established principles in digital cartography.One caveat though-- I would like to know how much has changed in the digital cartography world as it is almost a decade since this book was first published, since i am not a cartographer myself and only have a peripheral interest as a student. But keep in mind that there are hardly any books on this topic available! So there is hardly anything much better you can get in my humble opinion. ... Read more

Great Guide for those Involved eGov Transformation
I was given this book as a gift, one of the best gifts I have received.I also had the pleasure of meeting the author in person.Even though it was very entertaining to read, the best value is that it served as a guide.

Not Very Challenging
Maybe I didn't like this book because it pushed too many of my buttons (and that's my problem) but after reading it, I don't feel that I've learned anything new or particularly useful.
Critical Thinking About True Homeland Defense
Homeland Security is a hot topic. Even if it wasn't, the "wag the dog" mentality of the United States government would make it so. The terrorist attacks of 9/11 have defined and driven almost all aspects public policy and government spending since then. In a knee-jerk reaction to the events, many laws and initiatives were passed ostensibly to protect our country from any similar attacks in the future.
Good Primer for Homeland Security
Very interesting book. Gives a good overview of the Homeland Security status and effectively illustrates the futile efforts to protect everything ultimately protects nothing. Also good effort describing the "shark feed" of vendors sopping up billions in tax dollars by trotting out dubious products and services to address Homeland Security. The book diverges in Chapter 9 Electronic Pearl Harbor where it is written more for an Information Technology type. ... Read more

An easy read in understanding the Microsoft Antitrust Case
With all the various information available concerning the Microsoft monopoly, it was wonderful to find an objective source that followed the events before and during the Microsoft case, analyzed the monopolistic tendencies of the software market in general, and compared this information with previous monopolies.The best characteristic of this book is that it explains the events and legalities of the case in such a way that it is not at all difficult to understand.

This book presents a compelling discussion of economic theory and offers scrutiny of several flawed theories of market failure with specific regard to Microsoft and the government's antitrust case against the software giant.Winners, Losers, and Microsoft gives noteworthy insight into the underlying assumptions of these deficient economic theories as well as into the perceptions used as their foundation of evidence.Leibowitz and Margolis point out crucial flaws in these theories which are widely used today by some economists.They also seek to destroy the government's evidence for Microsoft exhibiting a damaging monopoly role in the software industry.The authors' assertion is that markets cannot be oversimplified through questionable assumptions and faulty evidence in order to come to a convincing theory of market failure.Their main claim is simply that certain technologies win out over others in time because they are of superior quality.
Dvorak isn't a myth.
It's true that no completely scientific studies have been done on Dvorak vs Qwerty, but it hardly takes a study to see that Dvorak is better.Qwerty was created before touch typing was ever dreamed of.It's no better than an alphabetic arraingement. Authors do not know the computer industry
The authors are PH.D. economists, but obviously do not know how the computer industry works. I've been in the industry over 40 years and had to deal with the IBM and Microsoft monopolies.
