Superb instructional book for my needs
I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist.On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied.The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals.It served my needs.I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community.I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

Practical and Useful
This book educates the reader in image processing and MATLAB.While I am experienced in both, I found the book to be an extrememly useful reference book for projects involving image compression and image representation.The book offered practical descriptions and useful code for computing the fast wavelet transform.It was especially useful in describing how the edges should treated.This is a big issue that other textbooks gloss over.I had never seen it described in a textbook, and it was described so well.
The best of its kind.
If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.

Introduction to Logic
I read this book in early 1980.Because of my background in mathematics, I read the language and deduction portion, of my own in just few days.Earlier I had read Morris Cohen & E Nagel's famous book.Treatment of scientific method etc. seemed better in the latter,yet to learn about various aspects of language usage and deductive logic was realy an electrifying experience then .The part on inductive logic is in its own way excellent.I have 2/3 editions of this book and used it when teaching to a class of judicial officers about use of logic in law esp. chapter 15.This is a must for the autodidact.

Elementary, my dear reader...
Logic is not just for Spock; deduction (which, if you read this book, you'll discover is rather different) is not just for Sherlock Holmes.Many if not most students of philosophy over the past 50 years have had their beginning logic training from an edition of this book, 'Introduction to Logic' by Irving M. Copi, now in its eleventh edition, also now with a co-author listed, Carl Cohen.
Ideal Text for Self-Study
I bought this book (along with the study guide) and began self-studying the material to improve my logical ability.The book is relatively easy to understand even for novices with no prior training in logic and uses examples that are entertaining and interesting.The answers to select homework questions (about 1/4) are in the back so I would suggest that for self-study, either the study guide (which includes another 1/4) or the complete answer guide should also be purchased.The text itself is very fun to go through and I think Copi and Cohen do an amazing job as teachers. For those planning on taking the LSAT, this book may prove more beneficial than a test prep course if you want to understand the actual reasoning behind the test and not just regurgitate formulaic test-taking strategies. ... A Must for Photoshop Users!
I have read several Photoshop books and watched training DVDs, but this book focused on my true interest, restoring old photographs. This book was more useful than all the other Photoshop training combined. I highly recommend this book.

Ms. Eismann offers Great Insight...
...into the complicated, sometimes inscrutable world of Photoshop. If you're aspiring to be a professional photographer or post-production assistant, probably the single best thing you can do for your career development -aside from practice, practice, practice- is make sure you own a copy of this book and Ms. Eismann's other work: "Photoshop Masking & Compositing". Study her techniques, apply them to your own images and re-apply them until you can look at an image and know right off which tools you're likely to use and how.

Finally, an excellent book!
This is by far the best book I have ever bought on Dreamweaver. I am a self-learner, and I have about ten books at all levels on Dreamweaver, starting from "dummies" to "beyond". In this book, the author goes through the laborious tasks of explaining the basic concepts first, and then follows these up with one or more step-by-step tutorial. He also provides a host of appropriate tips and "notes" such as "Power Users' Clinic", "Up to Speed", etc. that are very useful to a self-learner like myself. The videos are simply outstanding.I wish that there were more videos. I assume that the author will continue writing such books. How about a Flash 8 book, David?

Simply Excellent! Fully Justifies Its Price!

OK book for 1st or 2nd year undergrads
I am giving this book 4 stars because it's quite descriptive and easy to follow.It covers some of the basic concepts behind digital image analysis and touches on the more general signal processing concepts, but it doesn't go very deep into the actual math.This may be what you want, but for me it was an assigned text for a 4th year undergrad course I took in college, and I found it inadequate.I felt like I could have written this book before I even started the class.At the same time, though, I think it would have been a great text for a more entry-level course.

Excellent photography / digital camera instruction
I have purchased this book twice, it is an introduction to digital photography, particularly for the fixed lense Nikon SLR cameras (such as the 8700) and SLR digital cameras.If you have a simple point and click camera you will get some benefit from the book but not as much.
Great for beginner
Bought this book to go along with Digital Rebel XT purchase. The book has not disappointed. Explains everything there is from aperture, exposure, shutter speed etc in great detail yet easy to understand. Recommend it to beginner, intermediate & expert alike

Dreamweaver 8 and Nac OS X
Good book, walks you right through each step of the way. Examples are good. Slight problem with the Mac OS X instructions, but workable. A good understanding of your computer system and operating system is suggested to help with some of the exercises.

Effective, but needs a little tweaking....
Dreamweaver is a deceptively simple-appearing program, but is incredibly powerful and complex "under the hood". Thus, future users will need exceptionally well-prepared materials to learn it well.

XVII vs 17 - Names Matter
You know how much it helps to choose nice names for the variables in your programs - yes you will have seen some of these patterns before, but having the nice names to think with can be like Roman vs Decimal numerals - XVII or 17, there's a difference.Searching for [ Tidwell Interfaces ] you can find the author's site, which has free excerpts. Amazon lacks an "online excerpts available" pattern, is this good business or not, hmm.

this is not a "how to design interfaces" book - more of a "here is what has worked in the past when people designed interfaces". it's great for inspiration, as its examples range across web apps, desktop apps, mobile devices and others.

Deke - PhotoShop - McClelland
I am sure there are other books that might be easier to follow and that might offer more than this one for learning all of what PhotoShop has to offer, but I just have not found them yet. Light to read with easy step by step instructions for the beginner as well as the accomplished image processor.
One-on-One -- it's not just another Photoshop book
Deke McClelland knows his subject very well and presents it in a clear and orderly way so new learning rests on a solid foundation. The format works: read the lesson, watch the DVD-ROM video lesson, do the exercises, take the quiz at the end of the chapter. Each lesson is designed to be understandable by those without much Photoshop experience and still include a few techniques that even experienced users probably don't know. And he does it all with good humor. Work files and video lessons are all included on the DVD-ROM in the book, which is bound so it lies open and flat on the desk without any hassle.
The perfect jumpstart for Photoshop newbies
This was the jumpstart I needed to learning photoshop.This is not so much a tutorial as it is a get-up and start-using photoshop one-on-one session, exactly as the title suggests.So instead of learning the interface in text-book procedural fashion, it's kind of like apprenticing for the author Deke (who also wrote the photoshop bible book).BTW, the author is notably an Master at photoshop, as is apparent when he tells you "nobody uses this command, you can do that function with this new command here".There's a lot to be distracted in photoshop, hundreds and hundreds of different functions, and it turns out that many of these functions are obsolete and only left-in to satisfy old users, so having Deke point these things out is fantastic.Eg, unsharpen mask, obsolete.smart sharpen, da-shizzle.

Teach Yourself, YES! You Can Do It!
I took a Jr. College Class on Final Cut Pro 5 and this was the textbook.The teacher would lecture for an hour and the rest of the time, we worked through the lessons in the book.At the end of the class, we were all able to produce our own short videos.This book is very step-by-step and to be honest, I think that I got more out of going through the lessons than listening to the teacher.I suggest Rick Young's "The Focal Easy Guide to Final Cut Pro 5 for new users and professionals" as a companion book.They both say the same thing, but in different ways.The lessons took me a little longer than the time indicated in each lesson frontpiece, but I sure learned a whole lot about making movies and FCP!

The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Far and away the best book for everyone!
This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions.It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful.She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive.And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

Not flawless, but a very good introductory guide to Pro-E Wildfire 2.0
The author has done a very good job in writing this introductory guide to Wildfire 2.0. As noted by the other reviewer, this is a great learning tool for the beginner and is quite detailed. There are very few mistakes (only the occasional figure no. & scale factor typos as well as an incomplete sentence or two). If the reader only works the tutorials and successfully solves the problems at the end of the chapter, he will at least be competent at 3-D part modeling, 2-D drawing, and generating assemblies. However, I do have a few minor quips to note. There is no information on how to recover from a mistake, which can leave the novice user quite frustrated. In addition, there is no coverage of how to repair a failed feature, which cannot be completed, or change(modify) a feature in an existing model. No example of top down modeling (i.e. drawing parts in an assembly first). No coverage of sheet metal modeling (the author may not have considered this basic, but I would). Pro-E is not intuitive. However, once the reader becomes comfortable with a few of the commands, the overall logic of how the program operates seems to make more sense. That said, some operations are very complicated, including copying a feature from one orientation to another orientation. Although it would be no simple task, this reader would like to see a listing of all of the commands and their options with descriptions, where appropriate. Perhaps a new book idea for Mr. Tickoo? Finally, for the novice, patience and experimenting are the keys to successfully learning a new computer application. Good luck!

Very helpful and easy-to-follow methodology
Sham Tickoo writes from the standpoint of someone very familiar with the subject as he apparently is. The book represents a very easy-to-follow, step-by-step methodology, which is suitable even for complete beginners. The author covers the theory first and then illustrates it with appropriate tutorials. At the end of each chapter there are self-evaluation questions and exercises.
Perfect for a novice
I started learning proe wildfire when my project manager asked me to do so because I had to work on a project. With some solid modeling experience and this book in hand, I started doing it. I must say that it is because of this book that I was able to learn the software so easily and must importantly, I did not take much time. The chapters in this book are perfectly arranged. Take Digital Photography to a New Level
Dan's book has literally changed the way I look at color. His writing style is entertaining and his organization of the book is excellent for what unfolds to be a complex subject. The concept of color perception is hard to grasp. And, it's quite another thing to understand its subtlties when processing digital images. The question always arises: Why don't my image files look as good as what I saw? Dan's book answers that question and many others as it guides the reader/photographer through a few easy steps that will, at a minimum, raise the output quality of images tenfold. For advanced users, there are many gems waiting in this book that will take image control and presentation to another level. If you could have only two digital photography books on the shelf, I recommend this one and Stephen Johnson's On Digital Photography.

Doesnt cut to the chase.
This book is a good one......I guess. The reason why I am not sure is that I have had this book for over a year now and I still havent managed to read it completely. Everytime I start reading it, it loses my interest after the third chapter. The authour would have been happier writing poetry about the LAB colour space. He keeps ranting on and on and on about the LAB colour space but when it comes to actually teaching you something new he does it in less than half the pages of the book. It gets to the point where the reader just goes - Ok, LAB is THE colour space to work in, now would you please stop telling me that after every other paragraph? Too much uselss information and very less practical knowledge.

A Must Read
Much truth is stated in the other reviews here. Although this book can be difficult and wordy, and some of the comments regarding layout and presentation of content are valid, this book is indeed an extremely important work to read in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of Photoshop. I personally found that this book, along with Dan's other great "Professional Photoshop" series, took my skills at post-processing to entirely new levels.

Solid material but not easy to read

Not a book for beginners
I had to buy this book for an Intro to Web Design class and many of my classmates and I agreed that this is not an easy book to follow. It dives into details without laying out the most basics first. In general, the lack of structure and more complicated than necessary language was confusing and maybe one with previous CSS knowledge would know what he's talking about but for a beginner it was quite unhelpful.

More of a Tutorial than a Definitive Guide
If you are not using Cascading Style Sheets in your own HTML documents, you should consider them.They will save you hours of tedious formatting time.CSS allows you to control every aspect of the formatting and display of your website, without having to "touch" each page individually.

Couldn't Be Any Easier!
Just wanted to say that I bought this book with no prior experience with Flash or Studio 8. I found the various modules of Studio 8 confusing so I decided to concentrate on just one and that being Flash 8. Hands on Training is the way to go. Gonzalez made learning the program easy. However, after going through the book, remember that you have to do your part too. Practice! Practice! Practice! Just reading the book or any book for that matter and then putting it on the shelf won't do you any good. Very happy with this book and will buy more HOT titles in the future.

Great for a beginner like me...
I had thumbed through several Flash 8 books in the local bookstore before deciding on this one. What drew me to it was that the examples progress from the basics into an end-result project. You can eliminate chapters if need be with no bearing on the final project as the necessary example files are provided on the disc for each chapter.
