4-0 out of 5 stars Newbie thoughts on Flash@Work
Although I was new to the world of actionscripting when I purchased and read Flash@Work for the first time, I rather enjoyed the read and its logical approach to scripting. In particular it gave me a solid starting point regarding how to plan and build real world projects which I am still learning.Flash@Work introduced me to the concept of modular design and beginning with the end in mind which is invaluable with flash projects.Overall, I recommend Flash@Work however, I suggest you pick a primer on actionscript first before digging into this book.Concepts and project are well explained and most importantly projects are practical in scope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zero to Sixty in no time

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are serious
If you are interested in creating a professional quality web site(s) with Flash 8, get a grip on yourself and understand it is not simple. Flash 8 is an intense program for serious people. This book is a great start, in what will be a long road of learning. If you are a beginner and want to learn "programming" the first 2/3 of his book "ActionScripting in Flash MX" will get you going. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to usability testing
Most of the existing books about usability testing are ten years old. While these books have a lot to offer a current student of user-centred design and usability testing, some students find them too out-of-date to be taken seriously. This book addresses that issue. The audience for the book is clearly for those who are new to usability and usability testing. However, experienced professionals will find a fair amount of information that is useful to them as well.5-0 out of 5 stars A solid textbook on usability testing that includes web
It's been a long time since we've had a new textbook on usability testing. Dumas and Redish came out in 1993, Rubin in 1994 and although I still use both of them constantly, I've been looking out for a solid textbook that has more awareness of the web in it. Carol Barnum's new book meets that need.5-0 out of 5 stars STC Usability SIG review

5-0 out of 5 stars Game theory and design? This is the book you've been looking for!
You're getting it straight from the horse's mouth since this book is written by the grandfather of the modern MMORPG.
5-0 out of 5 stars Guide to the philosophyand strategy of designing virtual worlds
To begin with, this book is not a programming book. There is no code, no discussion of VRML, MPEG-4, or X3D. Instead, this book stands back and takes a "big picture" look at the design of a virtual world from the viewpoint of systems engineering, social engineering, philosophy, history, and psychology. Ethical considerations are even tossed in for good measure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Serious book on Serious fun
I would have to say that Dr. Bartle's book on game design is one book on a tiny bookshelf about the width of a loaf of bread that is worth reading - and this one is worth more than the rest of the shelf combined.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful, but it's Hit-and-Miss
Because this is a "cookbook," it gives you recipies -- step-by-step instructions for performing specific tasks.
5-0 out of 5 stars Succinct and clear to understand . . .
A well-organised and clearly written collection of useful commands and solutions to help one along with the often exasperating arcana of Linux. Covers all flavours and is a 'must have' book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect binding keeps the book open at the desired page
... which comes in real handy considering how often I reference it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book...
For people who want to learn AJAX :] ... I like this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Flow
The book starts with the origins of AJAX and covers its roots very well. The programming examples are well explained. The Google Maps example is particularly interesting but may confuse a novice developer. More cases of when to use AJAX should have been covered, however this book can launch you into the world of AJAX

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, up to date
This is the second Pragmatic Programmers book I've read to have been published as a "beta book." That means that early versions of the text and code were reviewed by lots of readers, and their feedback incorporated into the final version. It shows: this is a very current book which addresses most of the pressing issues around Ajax design and development in language-agnostic ways. There's a chapter that covers some of the current code libraries (like Dojo and Prototype) without playing favorites. The writers write reasonably well. There are some *very* clunky sentences and paragraphs, especially in the last chapter, which feels pretty rushed. And strange continuity mistakes show up in several places, such as references to upcoming material that was actually covered several chapters back. The two consecutive chapters titled "Ajax UI part I" and "Ajax UI part II" feel poorly organized. It's usually a sign an author can't quite figure out how to group material when you get chapters with such vague titles.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
This book portends to be a universal command guide, and in all fairness they managed to get a good number of commands in the text. Unfortunately the ones the missed are significant (e.g. UNIX tar, which is universal in UNIX and Linux). I would not recommend this book for someone looking for help in distinguishing the difference in Linux and BSD commands.

5-0 out of 5 stars my review on this book
The book is amazing, it has all the commands i need, from windows to UNIX, but the downside of this is it doesn't have the HP-UX version. i hope they release an updated version of this book with the ones they're missing. One more thing is the pages of this book are too thin, one false move might cause the page to break. I hope the next release should more physically better. I hope you release a universal database version too. And for all the authors of this book out there... keep up the good work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, but that's it
This thin book is a good introduction to the idea of that you should make good software interfaces, but doesn't tell you how to do that. For that, Spolsky provides an excellent bibliography at the end.
1-0 out of 5 stars Amatuer at best

One of the first question I always notice about books: Is the title honest? For this book I can unabashedly say, Yes.This book is for programmers.

Before I started reading the Inside 3ds Max 7 book, I had read the authors biography. Most of them got a long history with 3ds Max, which makes this book a must-read experience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book
The author obviously knows his subject matter and is able to communicate it to his audience very effectively. While I am neither an expert with 3ds max, nor a professional, I find the examples in this book to be concise, clearly written and easy to follow. As other reviewers point out this book is a great resource for intermediate to professional users. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Flex
I really enjoy reading this book, in particular the chapters about J2EE and Flex.Help me understand the design patterns and motivations behind the cairngorm framework too and more importantly how to architect Flex applications.Looking forward to reading the updated version, following the new Flex 2.0.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Separating concerns
Flex 2.0 has been released, but I still find this book (Flex 1.0) an invaluable resource in developing rich client applications. There's a quick 30 page intro to Flex, and then the fun starts. You start at the Presentation tier, working your way through to the Business tier and then finally to the Integration tier of rich internet applications. This is best practice in motion. 4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory, but with flaws
The Math Part:
5-0 out of 5 stars A decent textbook without unnecessary clutter
This book goes straight to the heart of the numerical methods without unnecessary distracting fancy pictures and layout that some numerical methods textbook for engineers have. Also, the book has enough Matlab programs for a reader/student to understand essentials of Matlab programming and then tweak/modify the programs for further applications.
5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed book
Whether you are an instructor for an Engineering class, Life Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, or simply want to add practical mathematical analysis and programming, this book is the book you should use.I have been using Matlab for a number of years, and I had to pick up my Matlab knowledge from the manuals, man pages, the Internet, etc... and finding out the ins and outs of how to do something was not always an easy task nor accurate.Mathews and Fink's book put all you need to know about the most popular Mathematical methods at your finger tips. The book is tailored such that it can be used alone in a Mathematics course, or as reference in an Engineering course. One field of study that has enjoyed the power and flexibility of Matlab in the recent years is Computational Biology or Bioinformatics.Even though there are plenty of applications popping up here and there for this area of research, the area is still very much untapped and algorithms need to be developed for it as we go forward.Matlab is the best way to try out these new or improved algorithms, and use some of the available tools out there to generate C source code from your Matlab files. This method of algorithms development could save you tons of time, since Matlab makes numerical programming very simple.

4-0 out of 5 stars a clean introducion
This is a very clean and readable book introducing Gnome/Gtk2/GLib2 application developpement and can be also used for understanding GLib2C utilities (strings, hashes, arrays, lists, trees...) and Gtk2 (treeview wigets, etc..). It also adds the Gconf stuff (an api for storing your app's configuration).
5-0 out of 5 stars Does What It Sets Out To Do
This is a pretty heavy duty programming book. The opening words say you should have, "Firm Programming Experience in C, including pointers, dynamically allocated data structures, and pointers to functions, C macros and the C preprocessor, fundamental understanding of Unix: processes, libraries, search paths, and so on."
5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
As the author already states in the introduction the book doesn't cover all the aspects of gtk and gnome, because then the book would be over 1000 pages, but with what it covers it covers very well and you can have a great start with gnome programming.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not In Depth
The Structure of the book is very complicated, it's as ifconstructed from many different articles written for some 3D application. And many of the information is very software specific. There are many examples but not a single complete advanced tutorial. Many chapters copied from Doug's old book LW5.0 character animation. There are many other books on Character Animation much better than this.1 out of 5.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too many applications attempted; spread too thin
Overall this was a very helpful book. My main "problem" with this book is the author's attempt to cover so many applications so specifically. As a Lightwave user, I am still left in the dark aboutLightwave's bones in character animation; which is one of the main reasonsI purchased the book. Only the very basic setup was covered as a tutorial. How about something more complex such as a "hand" with limitedranges, fall-offs and strengths...?The version 5.0 and 5.6 is jumpedbetween frequently...then Hash...then Softimage.....Max.... For characteranimation theory this is a good book but if you are trying to actually be acharacter animator using only one of the apps (such as Lightwave), then Isuggest doing alot more reading from other books and web tutorials.Forthe price this book is good but no great wonder. I did learn from it; onlynot as much as I thought I would have when I bought it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is a good book, perhaps the best of its type but...
It is a good book, perhaps the best of its type, and it could certainly be much better, in ways other readers have pointed out. But it has one fatal flaw for a book that should be computer platform agnostic - the CD-ROM isWindows only. What about all the Mac and UNIX people in the 3D Industry? ... Read more
