5-0 out of 5 stars Teach Yourself, YES! You Can Do It!
I took a Jr. College Class on Final Cut Pro 5 and this was the textbook. The teacher would lecture for an hour and the rest of the time, we worked through the lessons in the book.At the end of the class, we were all able to produce our own short videos. This book is very step-by-step and to be honest, I think that I got more out of going through the lessons than listening to the teacher.I suggest Rick Young's "The Focal Easy Guide to Final Cut Pro 5 for new users and professionals" as a companion book. They both say the same thing, but in different ways. The lessons took me a little longer than the time indicated in each lesson frontpiece, but I sure learned a whole lot about making movies and FCP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent, comprehensive, straightforward
Very powerful hands-on learning tool when combined with the enclosed DVD. Covers all the functions of Final Cut Pro and allows you to neatly learn hands-on.

Editorial Review

It's important for anyone who creates Web sites--even those who rely on powerful editors like Dreamweaver or GoLive--to know HTML. The World Wide Web Consortium rewrote HTML as a subset of XML (dubbing it "XHTML 1.0") and the allowable code will eventually be stricter. Tags that are being phased out are labeled "deprecated"--current browsers can still handle them, but if you want your site to keep up with future browsers, not to mention conform to accessibility requirements, you will want to get on top of XHTML.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Far and away the best book for everyone!
This is simply the best HTML and CSS book.It has basically everything you need to know, with easy-to-find, easy-to-understand, and concise descriptions. It it not "web for dummies," rather, it is a very sophisticated and realistic approach to HTML and CSS, without a lot of hype or self-promotion.If you want to hear people wax poetical about the "EM" unit, you can get the book by Lie & Bos, but I think Castro's book is far more useful. She gives links to many web sites to help with more advanced stuff (Javascript, etc.), which is nice, but the book itself is incredibly comprehensive. And the layout of the book is a model for all instructional texts.A winner!

4-0 out of 5 stars For Reference or for learning
Elizabeth Castro has been writing Visual Quickstart Guides to HTML and web design in an easy to understand manner. Now she provides resources for those who would be interested in web design that will create sites that are usable for years to come. Since I first picked up the fourth edition of this book, I have been hooked on the series, because its explanations are written on a level for the average person. The organization allows the reader to move at their own pace and easily refer back to topics that they want to refresh.
5-0 out of 5 stars Coding
This book was a real help to me when I first became addicted to coding. The pictures are quite helpful, or at least more helpful than long explanations, and Elizabeth Castro is a fabulous writer. I learned so much that I went on to learn many other programming and coding languages with ease. You don't need to have any experience to use this book, it explains everything. Visual QuickStart Guide's are the best type in the market, cheap and easy to understand. So if you are itching to learn another computer language, I suggest checking them out! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take Digital Photography to a New Level
Dan's book has literally changed the way I look at color. His writing style is entertaining and his organization of the book is excellent for what unfolds to be a complex subject. The concept of color perception is hard to grasp. And, it's quite another thing to understand its subtlties when processing digital images. The question always arises: Why don't my image files look as good as what I saw? Dan's book answers that question and many others as it guides the reader/photographer through a few easy steps that will, at a minimum, raise the output quality of images tenfold. For advanced users, there are many gems waiting in this book that will take image control and presentation to another level. If you could have only two digital photography books on the shelf, I recommend this one and Stephen Johnson's On Digital Photography.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesnt cut to the chase.
This book is a good one......I guess. The reason why I am not sure is that I have had this book for over a year now and I still havent managed to read it completely. Everytime I start reading it, it loses my interest after the third chapter. The authour would have been happier writing poetry about the LAB colour space. He keeps ranting on and on and on about the LAB colour space but when it comes to actually teaching you something new he does it in less than half the pages of the book. It gets to the point where the reader just goes - Ok, LAB is THE colour space to work in, now would you please stop telling me that after every other paragraph? Too much uselss information and very less practical knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Much truth is stated in the other reviews here. Although this book can be difficult and wordy, and some of the comments regarding layout and presentation of content are valid, this book is indeed an extremely important work to read in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the inner workings of Photoshop. I personally found that this book, along with Dan's other great "Professional Photoshop" series, took my skills at post-processing to entirely new levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid material but not easy to read
Cascading Style Sheets
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for beginners
I had to buy this book for an Intro to Web Design class and many of my classmates and I agreed that this is not an easy book to follow. It dives into details without laying out the most basics first. In general, the lack of structure and more complicated than necessary language was confusing and maybe one with previous CSS knowledge would know what he's talking about but for a beginner it was quite unhelpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars More of a Tutorial than a Definitive Guide
If you are not using Cascading Style Sheets in your own HTML documents, you should consider them. They will save you hours of tedious formatting time.CSS allows you to control every aspect of the formatting and display of your website, without having to "touch" each page individually.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Be Any Easier!
Just wanted to say that I bought this book with no prior experience with Flash or Studio 8. I found the various modules of Studio 8 confusing so I decided to concentrate on just one and that being Flash 8. Hands on Training is the way to go. Gonzalez made learning the program easy. However, after going through the book, remember that you have to do your part too. Practice! Practice! Practice! Just reading the book or any book for that matter and then putting it on the shelf won't do you any good. Very happy with this book and will buy more HOT titles in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a beginner like me...
I had thumbed through several Flash 8 books in the local bookstore before deciding on this one. What drew me to it was that the examples progress from the basics into an end-result project. You can eliminate chapters if need be with no bearing on the final project as the necessary example files are provided on the disc for each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!
With this book i figured out in two days of owning it what i had been trying to figure out since i started tryin to learn the program some time ago. it is an amazing tool that covers everything you need to know to creat great illustrations. i thank my professor for insisting so much, this book is THE Book. Buy it! don't thinktwice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insprirational
If you are new to Adobe Illustrator (AI), this is probably not the best book to get started with. Also, IMO the chapters are introduced somewhat randomly. In spite of this, the book has many fine examples of great artwork produced with AI, and for an advanced beginner the book has been a welcome addon to several others I have purchased. I really like the author's writing and teaching style. I'm glad I got this book and recommend it to others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic
One reason I love this book is that it is geared toward more advanced techniques and intermediate users rather than absolute beginners. There are plenty of books written for beginners but there are not many books such as WOW! Book that focuses on teaching beyond the basic skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential tome
Yep.This is it. The War and Peace of dslr photography. This baby is absolutely jammed with useful tips and guidelines. If you can't walk the photographer walk after reading it, at least you'll be able to talk the talk. There are even some unexpected bonuses like little snippets of the history of photography and exactly which giants' shoulders we are standing on when we snap away today. Unless you're already an absolute dslr master, this would be a wise investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best D-SLR Guidebook
There aren't too many good D-SLR guidebooks out there -- and most of them appear to be written by this author.I checked out his "Quick Snap Guide to D-SLRs" and it was very good, but too basic for me.The same could be said for Busch's "Digital SLR Cameras and Photography for Dummies" although it did go into more detail. This book was just right, with lots of in-depth material about using digital SLRs, as well as tips and techniques I could apply right away. This author also has more advanced books on D-SLRs, and I will probably check them out after I've had a chance to learn everything in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Concise

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware - You need to ALSO know Photoshop
I was disappointed - not because the CSS stuff is poorly presented, because it's on the better side of average, but because to learn this book's stuff, or try to emulate some of the examples, requires a knowledege of Photoshop. For example, you need to know how to create an image with a gradient applied to a canvas, or to create a 1 pixel transparent row within an image - something that your average person may takes weeks to learn on his own.Photoshop is not all that intuitive to just grab a copy and simply create an image that the author uses.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great book but missing a page
Great resource for css designers. I particularly enjoyed the section on rounded corners and css without tables. But I did find one thing wrong with it--page 196 is missing from my copy. What happened?

5-0 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All
Dan's book has been incredible in helping me built great UIs that truly are bulletproof.I'm currently working with a mega-church to design a completely new website, and Bulletproof stays on my desk as a terrific reference. I'm amazed at how easy writing clean code is and how bulletproof it really is. Something like a box with links that I used to build out of complex tables and sliced images (that would invariably break in certain conditions) can now be done with a couple of divs, a couple of images, and a few lines of CSS.Amazing! This is a must have book for all designers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice book
this is a very good book about web usability and its not a complex kind of book, you start reading it and u dont want to stop it untill you finish it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected..
As an avid read of Mr.Nielsen's blog and his website, I figured this book would comprise the "Bible of Web Design".Unfortunately, I was a bit let down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Simple IS usually better
Please people don't design incredibly complex sites with over the top graphics that take an hour(feels like) to download even on broadband! I encounter this everyday and can't imagine what it must be like for those on dial-up, which is still most of the internet user base. Designers like to design and justify their high paying jobs by these crazy sites that simply drive me nuts. I recently tried looking for sunglasses on the Ray Ban site and Holy [...]! What a pain in the [...]! I finally went to a small reseller site where I could actually see the glasses quickly and make a purchase. The Ray Ban site I'm sure cost a fortune and is pretty but NOT user friendly. Web site designers need to remember that these sites are for people to find products and services, not to win design contests. My ex is a graphic designer(excuse me...User Interface Experience) for a very well know company and I know how they think. The more elaborate the better, we can charge clients more! KISS ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I have seen some reviews that said this can't be used to learn Photoshop from the ground up, but that is untrue, because I used this book to teach myself Photoshop with absolutely no prior knowledge whatsoever, and it does a wonderful job of explaining everything. It pretty much covers everything, and I consider it a must have. The only reason it may not be for someone is if they don't learn well from just reading; that, I admit, is a downside of this book. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand what they are talking about by just reading the instructions. If you are sitting by the computer though, it's very easy to follow step by step. If you choose to buy a book with lessons, such as classroom in a book, then I definitely recommend this book as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great Book!!!
I'm a member of an online gaming community and I was wanting to learn how to make my own "Sigs". After a few hours of reading I was able to use layers to make my first kool looking sig. I also was able to use Photoshop for all the graphics on my web site. If you want to learn to use Photoshop, then this book is a MUST have...

Danny Goodman felt that he couldn't trust any of the documentation on Dynamic HTML (DHTML) that he read (too many contradictions), so he wrote this book as a reference for working with his own clients. After testing tags and techniques on multiple releases of the main browsers, Goodman came up with very practical information--some of which you may not find in any other resource.Read more

This book is a well written introduction into the world of css and pinpoints key concepts of css. It's by far one of the most readable texts that I have picked up out of all the technical books I've read in my few years of being alive. The book lacks a little in having some references to an example on a previous page while the reference to it is one to pages after the example. This discrepency is understood though since it is hard to keep everything together and not spill out onto other pages when planning the layout of a book. Overall this is a good book on css, and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to start into css.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book but irritating typos
I would have given this book atleast 4 stars if it weren't for the misleading typos! here's a few - Chapter 6 Pg 127 refers to Figure 6.2 (which doesn't exist!) instead of Figure 6.3; Chatper 10 Pg 228 the example "H1 {color: #ff000 }" is plain wrong (needs a extra zero at the end) and will not work.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great resouce for new to css
ritten by the authors of CSS, at first I found it a bit heavy in dialogue and backgrounds. Not until you open the book to the index does one actually realize the wealth of information in the book. Do not expect this book to show examples of the next great page, but as a resource in trouble shooting it helped explain alot of questions I either was too lazy to look up in Dreamweaver Help or couldnt find the right type of answer elsewhere. My level is pretty much entry intermediate, but with this book, it took me a bit higher. I am getting rid of my introductory CSS books and using this one as my main go to guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive widget set for C++
When C++ was first put together in the 80s, it was just before the advent of GUIs for many programs. But as Java arose in the 90s, and then C#, the need for easy UI coding in C++ became very clear. Hence Qt was developed. Now in its 4th version. And available for Microsoft Windows, linux, Macintosh and several unixes. The accompanying CD has version 4.1.1. Though by the time you get this book, you might want to scout the Web, either for patches to this version, or a more recent version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great usability book
As my second most favorite usability book, this book points out the hundreds of ways a site can go wrong, and the many points to consider when designing sites. Let's be honest - it's pretty impossible to satisfy all their guidelines and STILL meet a deadline - but at least you can pick the ones that matter most to your company, and be aware of the once you missed. Another must read for web designers.
4-0 out of 5 stars Must read for any serious web developer
rioritizing Web Usability by Jakob Nielsen and Hoa Loranger can best be described as a more 'strict' approach to web usability. If you have been in web development for any extended period of time it is likely that you have heard the name Jakob Nielsen. He offers great insight to web usability and has for many years. Some may view him as strict, some as normal, and still some as WAY off his rocker. No matter how you view him, he deserves much respect for his time spent in usability studies and the (somewhat timeless) statistics and information he brings to the table. I just finished reading this book, coupled with "Don't Make Me Think" by Steve Krugg, and appreciated what all of the authors could present through statistics, screenshots, and customer insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference book
This is the definitive OpenGL guide and reference book.It is hands-down the best reference book covering all basic OpenGL operations.I'm very satisfied with my purchase, and I use it every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still the definitive guide to OpenGL
For those graphic programmers who think that Java3D requires that you program at too high a level and want more elementary control over their graphics operations, OpenGL is probably a good choice for a graphics programming API. So, assuming you already have a good grasp of computer graphics programming concepts and can already program in the C language, this guide is probably your best bet. If you don't already know these things, you will be completely lost trying to read this book. The book starts out in chapter one showing the reader exactly what OpenGL can and cannot do. Supporting code and instructive figures are supplied. The next few chapters deal with performing basic graphics tasks by using the OpenGL API. Topics included are viewing, display lists, color, lighting, blending, antialiasing, and fog. Again, if you are not already familiar with how to write pseudocode for these type of graphics tasks, you need to find a good basic computer graphics text and learn the techniques first. The next part of the book moves on to slightly more advanced topics such as texture mapping, tessellators, quadrics, and NURBs all from the standpoint of "How do I do this in OpenGL?". The chapter entitled "Now That You Know" is especially valuable to the experienced graphics programmer. Unlike previous chapters, this chapter presents a collection of examples of higher-level graphics capabilities and some incomplete OpenGL code for those examples. The reader is expected to flesh out the code to get a running graphics program, and the book does point this fact out. Chapter 15, "OpenGL 20 and the OpenGL Shading Language", is the only truly new material in this 5th edition of the OpenGL programming guide. Thus, if you are not interested in using the OpenGL shader, you can probably forge ahead with the 4th edition of the guide if you already have a copy.
4-0 out of 5 stars An OpenGL Companion
The fourth edition of "OpenGL Reference Manual" edited by Dave Shreiner provides an official command reference for the OpenGL graphics library version 1.4.Published by Addison Wesley (ISBN 0-321-17383-X) the text is approximately 760 pages and has a suggested retail price of $59.99.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This Dummies is a mess!
Dummies books have been a staple of my computing/software resource library for a long time. This book was very disappointing. If you're looking for an organized presentation of the functions and capabilities of Adobe 7, leave this on the shelf. There are few visual examples in the book and very few tutorials that lead you through a topic in any organized way at all.To get something out of this book, I found myself jumping all over the place, following topic and function chapter references tossed in all too frequently, sifting through meaningless and annoying chatty writing, trying to piece together a tool's functionality on my own.And did I mention the writing style?Distracting, distracting, distracting.I felt like I was sitting in a computer class for octogenarians with ADD. Get to the point!!Leave it on the shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works Great
This book is easy to use and understand. I was comfortable using the program in a week.

2-0 out of 5 stars Photoshop 7 for Dummies
Reads like stereo instructions. Too many technical graphics terms for a novice photo editor. I usually like the "for dummies" books but this one falls way short of the mark. I would recomend this book only to a seasoned graphic artist that was already familiar with the terminology. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars This should have been the manual
This is certainly as dry as a computer manual, so Microsoft could have included this as at least a PDF with PowerPoint. So did not do that and now they want you to buy this separately. That itself is reason to not buy this book and look at other alternatives.
