I'm new to 3ds Max 8, so I bought this book to try and help me learn the program~ This book very well written and goes through all the tools and workings of 3ds max 8 plus some of the more popular plug-ins (afterburn etc.) I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to know the ins and outs of 3ds Max, it's great:-) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book - One of the better computer Manuals I've seen
Just plain good. Well written, well put togeather, and makes it all easy to understand. My only complaint is it should come with a box of stick-its :) I've marked so many pages already.
4-0 out of 5 stars Wish I bought this first...
I bought the "Absolute Beginers Guide..." first. It wasn't 'absolute' enough for me.The layout of this book was much more logical and comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars it really is ...
this really is the missing manual.get this and "quick steps" and you will have a mated set that dovetail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn GL, not HTML
I want to address an issue that I have heard from many who have used this book. THIS IS NOT A GUIDE TO WEB DESIGN AND HTML! This book assumes that you understand the fundamentals of HTML and basic web design. This book teaches you how to use the features in GoLive, which are just easy buttons for basic HTML and CSS coding. If you want to learn how to make web pages, you will need to also buy a book on HTML, and probably CSS. Once you know these fundamentals, GoLive is a GREAT tool to use to make them all come together. This book explains nearly every tool in GoLive and briefly explains their partner HTML coding. This book teaches you all the neat features that GoLive has that will easily create complicated HTML codes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but really is like a classroom...
Kind of tedious but effective, this book gets you working on a weird sample web site at first ("Virtech U. The School of the Future", or something) in a series of lessons that take seem to drag on and on and get you itching to work on your bands web site. But it really does give you a good idea of how the tools, windows and palettes work. It's definitely better than a "for dummies" book (not as dumb), but it's still pretty easy to wrap your mind around. Out of all the books I've been through for CS2, this one is by far the most comprehensive, and I'd recommend the Adobe books over any others. Very solid and accurate information, straight from the source. Thank You.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only the Basics
We purchased the GoLive software because it promised to do "everything" we could possibly want for our business website... we purchased the GoLive book because we needed help figuring out how to make this non-user-friendly software fufill its promises. The book only covers the simplest of web designs and does NOT go into detail regarding anything that we require. We were very disappointed.I would only recommend this book or software to those who want a very simple, very generic website. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Heid should have stopped two editions ago . . .
I have been buying this book since its very first edition. Althoughthe ilife suite has added significant new features in version's 5 and 6, they are berely covered here. For example, iMovie's addition of styles, a major new development is covered in just 2 pages - a third of which is text explaining the feature! Also, this book is priced as if it had a DVD (it is the same price as the other editions with the DVD), even though the DVD is missing in action. The author's own 5 star rating is especially pathetic. This book needs a major overhaul to continue to be effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Price - Wealth of Knowledge
Not having purchased Jim Heid's previous editions of this book, I do not miss an instructional DVD that I never used. But this volume does everything that it portends to do. Along with Heid's constantly updated Web site as an instructive companion, The Macintosh iLife '06 is a joy to have and use while exploring the uses of iLife.

5-0 out of 5 stars iLife '06 by Jim Heid.....Helpful Tool
I needed to learn how to make a DVD, and Jim's book helped me get the job done. His visual guides coupled with his good sense of humor sprinkled into his writing style made the learning process seem less daunting.I aim to continue on with iMovie and iWeb, but the one application made the purchase of the book worthwhile. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Love this book to review the Maya class I just took
This book is awesome for me as I just finished a beginning Maya 3D modeling and animation class this past semester. I was afraid that I would forget a lot of what I learned and also that I wanted to review to enhance my understanding so I looked for a book that would take me step by step, through several different types of projects. And I'm happy to say that I'm one third into this very thick, but easy to follow book and it does just that. It really leads you by the hand, better than my instructor in the classroom, because I can go at my own pace (which is very slow). A great book for the beginner and soon to be intermediate Maya practitioner. Please note, however, that I also bought the Visual Quickstart Guide to Maya 6 previously, which has been a great cross-reference book to this particular Learning Maya 7: Foundation book. I guess no one book will answer or be clear enough on every little nuance of a topic; that is why it helps to have another book or two on the same topic as a cross-reference just in case you get stuck on an interpretation of the textual meaning or intention.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
This book is weighty, full-colored and honestly, looks pretty cool when it comes in the mail. The problem starts when you go to use it. For someone like myself who has absolutely no prior 3D animation expierence, this book is horrible. It skimps on steps, the steps it tells me to do fail to work in the program, the dozens/hundred of menu options are not labeled when you're doing the steps and then a few pages over it'll tell you to go to visor window and you're all, what? Visor menu? What in the world is that? Then you have to waste valueable time searching for the elusive menu.
5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL INTRODUCTION TO MAYA!!
It's pretty great for beginners, but if you have NEVER used a 3-D package before, I suggest doing the INTRODUCING MAYA 7: FOR BEGINERS first. I also suggest using the previous FOUNDATION BOOKS which include Salty the Seal and the spaceship battle since they teach things that aren't in this book. (As you can see, I'm a firm believer in grasping this program.)

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about ideas and concepts
Working with 3D for years as a hobby, my knowledge isn't extensive, but I had a few ideas of what should be covered in a book on lighting and rendering. Little did I know just how few my ideas were. The current edition of Digital Lighting and Rendering was released in early 2006 and looks to succeed the first edition, which came out in 2000 and has been used as a textbook in some computer arts classes. It adds newer techniques and ideas, such as sub-surface scattering, and some concepts, such as global illumination and ambient occlusion are expanded and placed throughout the book. The book is accessible for readers who have at least some experience with 3D software.
5-0 out of 5 stars A generous update from the 1st Edition
The author has extensively updated this industry standard since its first release six years ago, and the result is a book that should absolutely be on every Color & Light Artist's shelf. What was a very good reference is now even better, with more sage advice, clear and logical insight regarding lighting different kinds of scenes (e.g. indoor, outdoor, daytime, nighttime), more information on technologies that have become popular in recent years (such as global illumination), and the addition of complementary materials at the author's web site.I have been using the 1st Edition of this book as a required text in my rendering classes for several years, and this much anticipated new version ties in even better.Even if you already own the 1st Edition, you are likely to find this update a worthwhile purchase.I would love to see this book's sister, Digital Texturing & Painting, rise to the same level of insight and clarity.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent tool !!
Very usefull and instructive book. It covers all aspects of digital light and the natural one, the author doesn't apply the vast information covered to an especific software, so you can apply all this rich information with the software that you actually use. This book is a must for every people that whant to go deep in to digital light and renderings. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great "dummies" book ...
If you are a complete beginner with respect to many of the skills needed for Ajax: HTML, CSS, DOM, JavaScript, then this book might be for you.All of the O'reilly Head First/Head Rush series are excellent teaching books and do a wonderful job at teaching skills in small bite-size chunks.Lots of pictures, exercises and games. This is about as fun as a book can get.
5-0 out of 5 stars HEAD RUSH AJAX--APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE APPLICATION!! HEAD RUSH AJAX--APPLY DIRECTLY TO THE APPLICATION!! ....
Do you want to learn , understand, and remember Ajax, with a goal of developing more responsive web applications. If you do, then this book is for you. Author Brett McLaughlin, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that in no time will allow you to write JavaScript code that fires off asynchronous requests to web servers.
1-0 out of 5 stars So redundant and so boring
I bought 4 other head first series books, java, EJB, Design pattern, and Servlet. These books were fast, funny and of course, informative. I really love these series. However, when I read this book I was so disappointed. Most explanations are redundant and it made me boring and the reading pace was suspended. I think the author have to add more examples and shorten the explanation. I regret to buy this book. Not recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Use Flash? Get this book!
I surprised how much information was packed into this book. Colin really holds nothing back, but doesn't forget about the beginners in the start of the book where he explains the basics. This allows the reader to quickly move into the more advanced sections and ultimately end up with a wealth of knowledge that came from one head.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just another book......
This book is targeted to users that are not new to programming. So, that's why I got the book since I know C++ and Java pretty well. But even if I didn't, and i knew some JavaScript (AC is JavaScript pretty much), I would also be considered as the target reader. With that said, these are my thoughts:
5-0 out of 5 stars it's essential if you want to program flash
since actionscript 3.0 has hit the scene in flex 2.0 and flash 9 is right around the corner, i'm slightly hesitant to recommend this book today (september 2006). BUT, the book is still great and if you are serious about programming in flash, i would say that it's essential material to learn. it's not a reference (although there is a small reference in the book) and it's not about how to program animation or do "cool" things in flash. it's about how to create custom classes and how to do it properly using best practices in flash. that's pretty much it. even as AS 3.0 crawls onto the scene, this book still gives a solid foundation and, from what i know about AS 3.0 so far, nothing you learn here will hinder you as you eventually move on to AS 3.0. the next version of actionscript will simply build upon what AS 2.0 has done. if you are still writing classes the old fashioned AS 1.0 way and feel like it's time to move forward, buy this book. if you've never written classes before, in any language, this book will show you how and provide a great foundation in doing so.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine pick.
Dan Saffer's DESIGNING FOR INTERACTION: CREATING SMART APPLICATIONS AND CLEVER DEVICES comes from an authority who's worked as a Webmaster and interactive media master for the past decade. His design savvy here offers beginner to intermediate designers a range of applications and shortcuts, from using controls and widgets to designing the better mousetrap. While his isn't strictly a computer book, it does provide a range of tips on brainstorming and creating smarter applications for hardware and software alike. A fine pick.
5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant overview of the fundamentals!
This is an insightful and necessary read for anyone entering the field of interaction design/user experience but also serves as a wonderful refresher for current practitioners, covering all the major areas, from software to devices, to entire systems. With lucid, articulate, easy language Saffer explains what I regard as the fundamentals of interaction design: definitions, contexts, methods/approaches, and new frontiers, all backed by relevant and clear examples. Some noteworthy highlights: compact case studies of real designs (like Google's IM), interviews with veteran design pros like Hugh Dubberly, Marc Rettig, Shelley Evansen, and a sharp look at Service Design and design for devices. Saffer fluidly conveys what I've always struggled to express: interaction design is not just web design, but a mode of thought and action towards improving relationships.
5-0 out of 5 stars The hardest button to button.
Whether you're a designer or programmer, designing for interaction is the hardest part of the job. I might spend one hour programming, and thereafter two hours staring at the user interface I expect PEOPLE to use. This book provides you with the tools and information to deal with interaction as an expert, and making the user experience fun and effective! This is Web 2.0, ajax is but a dusty tool to fix that which was never broken, it just feels that way. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs more examples!
I think this guy has a book about how the inmates are running the asylum...well this book suffers from what happens when the subject matter experts (SME) are allowed to write books.BORING!!!SME's always seem to forget to include compelling examples.Yes there are little screen shots, but IMO in order for a book to be compelling that has to do with design...it needs to show LOTS of examples of good design. The bulk of the book should be about breaking down those designs.I need to hear why a specific design is effective.Take a hint from Steve Krugs book "Don't Make me Think".That book is extremely effective without inundating the reader with jargon.Lots of examples withmeaningful visual breakdowns.Afterall...isnt UI design a VISUAL communication form?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for experienced developers
I have 7 years experience and I wasn't able to get any value out of this book.Based on some of the reviews on this site I thought that the book would be worth buying but unless you are in school or right out of school then your $35 is better spent elsewhere.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good on concepts, weaker on examples
This follow up to About Face is a good overview of the critical concepts to improve software usability.Cooper and Reiman know their stuff.Reading this certainly provides you with the grounding you need to make good decisions. At a tactical level, the book could certainly do more to help with real-world examples.

If you have Photoshop you simply must have this book. It is one of the finest books on a using a complex piece of software I have ever bought. If you buy no other manual for Photoshop this is the one you should buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars instantly dissapointed...
I produce motion graphics with Adobe After Effects, and have constantly run into the problem that on-line tutorials start with preparing or creating files in Photoshop first, then bringing those files into After Effects for manipulation. When I tell people I am a videographer, so many say "oh, you must be great with Photoshop then", so finally, I decided to take the plunge and try to learn this program.
4-0 out of 5 stars No CD???
Surprise. This book does not have a CD.For such book this is a big disadvantage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely thorough, understandable, and well-written
I am a Computer Science student and purchased this book to learn Flash for use with a project.I am very pleased-I think the book has very thorough descriptions and examples, and also offers great advice about design issues and other important considerations when developing a project.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ok
I have not seen the other Flash Bible Books so therefore gave it a 4 star rating. Also i am a tad dissapointed, the book itself has a lot of info (which the first few chapters is basic stuff) but it also seems that this may be the same content as the other Flash Bible books. It does go over some of the new Flash 8 features like the filters, however i was hoping the book would contain the new "BitmapData" and bitmap caching but it did not. Also maybe go over the timeline effects even if it is simple to understand. Had these features been included it would have been 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The examples alone inspire ideas.
I honestly cannot believe how much information this book has on Flash 8.I mean, when you get your book, just looking at it you can see how much information it has. This book answered all of my questions concerning flash 8, and inspired many new ideas just from the examples in the book.If you want to spend money to make money, this book is definitely where you should start. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for all skill levels
First let me start off by saying that I am far from a Photoshop beginner so I am cautious when choosing a book, but this one didn't disappoint. I was introduced to many tricks and tips or "Finishing Touches"... such as (patterns, custom brushes, burned edges, selective blurring and delivery) among others that have recently added that extra "pop" to my photos. I noticed in the other reviews that people are disappointed with the amount of "border effects" but what they are forgetting is Photoshop is a program that produces the best results with experimentation. Dave isn't trying to create clones (not the stamp), but is giving us insight in how the pros create such stunning imagery.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book stays near my desk!
Another great reference book from Dave Cross. This one will be well-thumbed before it's retired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you are Good
Ok, I'm not really out to toot my own horn here, but I was already very good at photoshop before I got this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful, but short for the price
This book is a well-written look at, like the title says, the elements of user experience. While I think the $30 price tag (retail price) is a bit high for a 180 page book, and I think the topic would have been better covered in an eBook or long article (or series of articles), the author succeeds in communicating his vision of the pieces that comprise a user experience.
1-0 out of 5 stars User centered bloatware!
Some nice ideas in a book with far too many pages. This story could be told in an article (OK, I'll admit a lenghty one), but it doesn't need a whole book to tell. And, although the ideas are nice, they are certainly not essential and they could be traded in for other equally good ideas on user-experience (imho)

5-0 out of 5 stars Better IA through better understanding of the Dev Process
JJG has enlightened me about the 5 layers of User Experience Design: Strategy, Scope, Structure, Skeleton, and Surface.I have learned that the traditional Information Architecture of categorizing, labeling, and indexing data leaves much to be desired when trying to have a significant impact on the User-friendly outcome of a web application's Software Development Lifecycle.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good intro to shaders
This is a well written book covering the Cg shading language. It contains a lot of useful information about Cg and graphics programming techniques in general. Unfortunately, I felt like it didn't cover as much of Cg as I would have liked, making the book less useful than it could have been.3-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Cg
My review here is from an experienced OpenGL programmer's perspective. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction, not very thorough.
This book is very good to get yourself started with Cg, but lacks technical details and advanced topics. Once you're on your way coding shaders, you're better off with NVidia's free cg_toolkit.pdf which is included with the Cg SDK. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bible for the bumbling novice
First I need to give a nod to "Gunny", the reviewer who convinced me to purchase this book: Thank you! This is truly the best Illustrator guide available for beginners, who need to find their painful path through the inscrutable thicket of Illustrator, who need to get a graphic project done, quickly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, As Usual
Visual Quick Start Guides and I were introduced in college. Each one I have used is: supremely instructive, light to nonexistent on self absorbed asides (a blessed relief), and meaty...very meaty. The paper isn't glossy, the images aren't in color, you get no adorable photos of the author with their children frolicking on the sands of Southern California. But you get information about how to use Adobe products (and anything else you want to tackle) so that you, in your miserable Midwestern hovel, far from the smiling shores of the Pacific rim, can accomplish your tasks for your demanding and sniffy clients and get paid, and not go to the poor house! Tres cool, no?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for eLearning Designers and Reviewers
With many years of experience in building eLearning and educational software I was looking for a reference to back up my "I know it when I see it" thoughts on good and bad courseware. This book met or exceeded my expectations. I like that the chapters are shorter and that the observations are backed up with study results. The References section is a valuable collection of eLearning studies in itself. There are also useful checklists included with the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars A book that every person in this field need to use
e-Learning and the Science of Instruction is a must have for anybody that is already a pro, or just starting out at designing web-based instruction. The authors give outstanding guidance for every step of the way, from explaining theories to the best way to set up your web site.It shows excellent illustrations of what to do, as well as what NOT to do.This book is a tool that every one in the business shouldn't be without.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book for practitioners
I have been designing and developing e-Learning for 6 years and this book has been wonderful to help remind me of some basics, teach me a few things, and give excellent practical advice as I continue developing.I am not one to read textbooks or non-fiction but I find this writing style very easy to read and I am able to easily apply the concepts. If you have never developed e-Learning but are studying the topic in school, this book may come across as dry and hard to read.Hold on to it and pick it up after you've been developing for a year or so and I'm sure you'll find it as useful as I have. ...
