4-0 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML
This is a good book for moderate to experienced computer users with programming experience. The code snipets are helpful to illustrate the topic, but a less experienced person could easily get confused.

5-0 out of 5 stars HTML & XHTML: The Definitive Guide, Fifth Edition
I am getting ready to build my own website and this book has helped immensely and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a good book to introduce them to the language of HTML.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good place to start
I first read this years ago when I was first learning HTML and had no developement experience. It was a great way to start off, easy reading and easy to look up information I needed.I still look things up when I need a quick refresher for a web page alteration. Not the book for someone looking for advanced knowledge. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every $.01
I have purchased too many Photoshop books! If I had purchased this first, it would have been my only one. Very clear and concise explainations!Nice work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend
This is a truly excellent CS2 book - Willmore explains the why - behind the how to many of the critical processes necessary for understanding CS2.I highly recommend this book, it is the best overall CS2 book on the market period.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Photoshop Book Available
A book is only as good as it's author and Mr. Willmore is an incredibly gifted writer in that he is able to explain WHY different techniques are used in Photoshop rather than simply listing a clinical step-by-step HOW-TO, as most of the Photoshop cookbooks out there do. This ultimately leads the reader to a much better understanding of the program and the tools that it offers the digital artist. The so-called telephone-book-thick "bibles" that are offered up for every software suite under the sun are nothing more than 'do this, do that, arrive at this' lists of instructions; they do very little in the way actually explaining WHY you would want to use a certain filter here, or adjustment layer there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for a start to learning Web Design
I found this book to be well written as a relative HTML novice and it was comprehensive enough (hence the title) in scope. I thought the projects and exercises were all well thought out. I especially appreciated that they gave a layout reference for all coding during the tutorials to make sure it was written and placed properly. They even gave a set of review-question answers keys at the end of each chapter which was useful for double checking your knowledge.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book
The tutorial sections were easy to follow, but the case problems were sometimes hard to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Needed it for school
Not much to say, I needed this book for an HTML class that I am taking. That being said it is a good book for beginers, if one runs through the tutorials one should be able to build a web page. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and easy to follow
I'm not a neophyte with CSS, but when I needed to turn an all-table-layout site into an all-CSS-layout site, I needed help. I turned to McFarland's book, which after a quick flip-through at the store seemed to hit exactly what I needed. Literally two pages of reading covered me, and I was off and running. But when I started reading the rest I was amazed at how much I didn't know about CSS. I really appreciate the real-world focus on browsers like IE5-6, and the inclusion of specific fixes for those CSS-unfriendly browsers. The fact that this book is SO recent - mid-2006 - means it's as up-to-date as a printed publication possible could be. While I'm sure the lengthy tutorials would be useful for someone progressively learning CSS, I like the book for it's logical organization, allowing me to flip to the bit I need, quickly see examples of what's going on (the ample screen shots are appropriate for a visual medium like CSS), and get back to work. I don't buy many computer books (for all that I've written several), but this one earns a permanent place not on my bookshelf, but right on my desk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another excellent missing manual
This is another fine addition to the Missing Manual series. CSS is easier than it sounds and now I think I understand it. MacFarland makes it all clear. This whole series is excellent - books for those of us who still like our manuals on paper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Straight-forward, Professional Approach to CSS
Overall, the book is a great read and recommended for anyone serious about designing professional websites. The chapters are broken up appropriately giving readers a gradual progression into the world of Cascading Style Sheets without too much detail at once.A major issue encountered in the book were the random passages scattered throughout where the author made recommendations that subsequent sections was boring and could be skipped.Personally I feel this puts the reader into a disgruntled state of mind.I liked how David put in the tutorials at the end of each chapter (except chapter 1) and these helped a lot clarify the material and how to put that material to use.I was disappointed though that the book did not present exercises for the reader to try out on their own at the end of each chapter. There were some exercises given by David but they were not consistent throughout the book (most chapters didn't have them). Finally I really enjoyed the overall pace of the book and found Appendix A with the entire CSS property list to be most helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Beginner and Intermediate Ogre users
This book guides you through getting Ogre set up on Windows and Linux as well giving you a very firm base of knowledge of the engine. This book is definately aimed at new users, but I have been using Ogre for over a year and still found this book to be helpful and enjoyable. The author does a great job of giving clear explainations and examples!Overall a wonder book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
The book is very good. It is definitely aimed at a newcomer to Ogre, but it can be useful even for people who have been around Ogre for a while as they might be missing a few concepts or not be familiar with a few components that they might not have used before.

3-0 out of 5 stars ...
As the author states in the introduction you need to read the book in a comfortable chair with a laptop+net connection, you cant read this without a keyboard with in arms reach.I expected the examples to be in pseudo code or at a less hard core level of C, if your programming is not top notch be carefull.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This book is class. Really great and the author is a gentleman. Also check out the online forums dedicate to this book at AI Junkie. There the author himself chips in with helpul advice for AI novices and stalwards alike. I have his other book too and it is also five stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unique is not best, but best in it's class
This is not the best hands-on, how-to book about designing your ownUnreal Tournament mod but it is the only book available. Thus, like the first Gutenberg printing press, it's the best in it's class! In the tutorials the authors assume that you already know as much about the Unreal Editor as they do. If you do not know the in's and out's and idiotsyncrasies of the Unreal Editor(which is why I bought the book in the first place) you will learn new definitions of patience during the first 23 chapters. In the end you will thank the authors for their altruism and capatalistic guile without which this knowledge would not be publicly available. Thank G-d and the great Satan for freedom of information! Thank America for the freedom to say this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I was brand new to all aspects of game design, and I had no idea where to start. So I opened up the book preview in the Unreal Tournament folder and saw this book.I went up to borders and bought it a week later.I've had this book for almost 3 weeks now, and Holy Crap! From the start, it explains the history of the Unreal engine and gives you a close up look of all the tools used.It has in-depth tutorials that make designing your first map a breeze. The CD contained in the book also has the May 5 Personal Learning Edition on it.In fact, the CD is my only complaint. This book expects you to use the CD for every texture and static mesh used.Overall, the book is a must buy for any begginner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unreal Mapping.
This book is the best and only one book published in Unreal technology nobody beat this tutorial book for mapping in Unreal tournament 2004 I recommend this thick book to anyone wanting to master the Unreal editor.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
Although I have not plowed through this entire book yet, it is shaping up as one of the books I've been looking for to tie up all the different threads that now make up the task of creating a good website.I may never actually create my business website all on my own, but at least I will have familiarity with the various tools that are currently being used so I can intelligently discuss and understand what the professionals are recommending. One of the toughest parts of learning any new technology these days is the constant improvement and changes going on.It's impossible to guess what may become standard and what may be obsolete by the time I finish the book.Books like this at least give an average person like me a fighting chance to keep as current as possible without continuous formal education.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
I am a design student, and have not yet learned web design, or how to build a website.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction Book
LEARNING WEB DESIGN is an excellent start to an understanding of how html works and what building websites is all about.Without getting too much into the specifics, and stopping before diving into more complicated items such as forms, and book builds a get over-all picture. If you're looking to become a professional, self-taught web designer, you probably want another guide. But if you are simply trying to build a personal web page and get started on a road to web design as a hobby, then this book is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginner to intermediate
I would recommend downloading the sample from the website to get a good idea of if the book's style works for you.Overall, the book provides a top notch introduction to CSS as well as good design and application tips. The emphasis on seperation of style and content is truly appreciated.I would strongly recommend this book to learn to properly build basic sites, and to build a foundation to build more advanced development skills on top of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Utopia, indeed!
I can't believe I've been so mired in the -stone ages- of Table-based web site design for so long. Rachel made me realize just how easy it can be, with a little care and forethought, to put together an excellent foundation for a site's layout.
5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding the CSS Revolution
CSS has completely changed the way that websites are designed. That is, if anything, an understatement: CSS has revolutionized Web design. Designers can do things with CSS that would have taken a LOT more time and effort to do using straight HTML 3.2 - if they could have been done at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Look over a Master's shoulder
Awesome learn by example book IF you already have a little background in CSS, and even then if your knowledge is elementary you might be lost on some of the finer points. If it had a little more theory and explanations it would be a killer book, but I guess Eric Meyer didn't have patience enough for that. He is anyway a Master in CSS styling, no doubts about that, and the right author too look at for learning and inspiration. The book is structured around several projects that you see in the various developing stages from beginning to end in reasonably small steps. The explanations of what's going on are like what you would expect from a guru/designer/artist that is, far from complete andbasic. Again is like you had the chance to peek over Eric's shoulder while he works, but he won't be bothered to lose too much of his time after you. But don't get me wrong, this book is a must have for anyone interested in CSS, even if I would not buy it now (it starts being a bit dated) but would wait for his next book that should come out this autumn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second to none!
I wanted a quick crash course in CSS; instead this book gave me a comprehensive start that led me on a path to a solid foundation in designing with Cascading Style Sheets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference about CSS
The first seen this book seems one more technical guide about CSS, but to the first contact realizes that it is a great reference based on needs to everyday of the web designer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent comprehensive text
To me, this book's greatest strength is instant applicability of theories and recipes presented in it. Virtually all topics in SAR are covered with great quality. There is no hard tie to any particular type of radar signals, which makes it very versatile.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best texts on SAR signal processing
SAR imaging owes a lot to inverse scattering theory, coherence theory, Fourier optics and holography. Luckily, Soumekh comes from an optics background and therefore, is very comfortable with all the optics stuff. He has done an excellent job in presenting different modalities of SAR imaging like stripmap and spotlight and implementing the algorithms in matlab. There is a lot of depth in his book and every time I read it I understand something that I could not understand when I read it last time. I have become a fan of Soumekh. I also attended one of his tutorials based on this book in the SPIE symposium in Orlando Florida.

4-0 out of 5 stars nice applications with heavy computations
Wasn't there once a time, in the depths of the Cold War, when Synthetic Aperture Radar was highly classified? It is still jarring to me to see a book like this, telling all and sundry about the many applications to which it can be directed.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than an Actionscript introduction!
Although this book is ostensibly a "beginner" book on Flash Actionscript (no previous programming experience necessary), I got more out of this book than you can imagine, and I'm not done with it yet. I've already got a few favorite pages that I come back to again and again.
5-0 out of 5 stars great user forums, excellent book
I spent $525 on an ActionScript class at SFSU, and I learned next to nothing. On top of that the teacher didn't like you sending him emails and asked you to save your questions for class. Fortunately for me this book has been all I really needed. I basically wasted the class tuition because this book covers ten times as much as the class did and David Powers, one of the authors of the book responds to my questions generally within 24 hours on the Friend's of Ed User Forum. Because of the forum I would say this book is invaluable. The book alone is good, but actually having one one the authors answering your questions has me give this book my highest recommendation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Really truly teaches you to use Illustrator
I loved this book from the moment I saw it.It is visually very pleasing to look at, and when you're reading a book that's over 500 pages, how it looks really matters. The page layout is very clean, and the readability of this book is very high. One of the sections I appreciated was a breakdown by genre of use, such as "graphic designer," "package design," or "fashion and apparel design," that directs you to the chapters that would be most helpful to you. This book is good because he teaches you to actually use Illustrator in a functional manner rather than detailing every item of every possible submenu.Additionaly, you learn the conceptual why and then the how-to.There are "Featured Match-Ups" that clarify the differences and similarities between two similar tools, and for more complex features, such as 3D Revolve, there are excersizes to better demonstrate the tools.Overall, this is a really good tool to get you started in Illustrator, and has enough explanations that the intermediate user can benefit from reading it too. And finally, there is an appendix on converting from FreeHand to Illustrator, which, though not one of my needs, is faily good sized for those that are looking for help in that area. This book is a very complete overview of the whole Illustrator CS2 package and will have you actually accomplishing what you want to in the program.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE reference on Illustrator CS2
When those of us who are experts in Illustrator run into a problem, Mordy Golding is often the person we go to for help. Now you too can turn to Mordy for help by keeping the Real Wolrd Adobe Illustrator CS2 book next to your computer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best graphics computer manual format I've encountered yet!
I just took Mordy's class at ADIM9 and got his book. I have to say it's the best book for my needs I've seen, and I am a very experienced consumer of graphics tech manuals. I'm only about 1/3 through it, but my skipping ahead makes me believe the rest of the book has the same format: if you need a step-by-step project based book, this may not be the book for you. But, if, however, you want a very complete, advanced overview that builds knowledge upon knowlege from-the-ground-up of how this works for the professional, this is the book for you. I've been using Illustrator professionally for about four years and I was getting by but not always knowing the quickest way to do things. This book will save me SO MUCH TIME! Thank you Mordy and PeachPit Press! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I had to buy this book for a class, it is terrible. All the author does is have you go click here and drag this to go through the exercises with no explainations. It's a waste of time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book out there to learn Dreamweaver
I have taken several classes to learn Dreamweaver but still didn't handle to use Dreamweaver very well...until I found this book which answered all the questions I had to master Dreamweaver. This book is the best book out there so far for beginner; A must have.

1-0 out of 5 stars I Was Forced To Read This For A Class, and Will Never Be The Same Again
This has to be the worst book ever written. Do yourself a favor, and spare yourself from the pain. The author thinks it's cute to make little quips that a 3 year might think of and put little wink things behind them, you know what I mean ;). The problem is they just annoy you to no end. The other annoying thing is that it takes the author a page and half to say "Hit the Enter Key". He spends page after page talking of inane things, hawking other books, and making stupid, juvenile comments. The book is a laborious 700 pages long, an agonizing 700 pages long. I have noticed that they have fired the dweeb who wrote it, Garo Green (who I always imagined him as a pasty white, fat 50 year old geek-you'll see what I mean if you have the misfortune of being forced to use this book), and significantly shorten the book, even though Dreamweaver 8 has many more features. I write this with the full knowledge that I will be selling my copy of this at the end of the semester, and that this review will adversely affect my selling price, but the book is really that bad. Unless you need it for a course, do not buy it. I promise you will regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
This is indeed a great book for both beginning and experienced photoshop users. Although it helps to get the "Photoshop CS2 One-on-one" combined with it if you're just starting out, but the author still gives a tutorial on the basics for those of you who are still a tad green.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners...
I'm in the game industry, and this book is right on in its techniques, and tutorials! This guy knows what he's talking about, and his easy to follow tutorials are great. Beware, this book is more for begginers, showing you the basics. I do wish he had gotten a little more into advanced technique in photoshop.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for game artists!
Luke Ahearn has done an impeccable job of compiling so much information into a concise, thorough and informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Reference
Large books, by their very nature, can have good points and bad points. After all, if you have a couple or several hundred pages worth of material, you are bound to get some things right and some things wrong.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what it is supposed to be ..
Great little reference book.It is not intended to be a learning tool.If you want that, try the Head First book on HTML/XHTML/CSS that O'Reilly also publishes.
5-0 out of 5 stars Works like expected.
I've used this pocket reference for a long time now and I love it. It's a great way to refresh your memory when you can't seem to remember a property and/or its value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go further in describing the sharpening process.
Two powerful new titles are top picks which stand out from the computer books on the market. Bruce Fraser's REAL WORLD IMAGE SHARPENING WITH ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS2: INDUSTRIAL-STRENGTH PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES goes beyond more general discussions of sharpening tools to pinpoint the kind of sharpening each image needs, and how to use Photoshop CS2's many tools to achieve perfection. Learn the range of these tools, their differences in application, and how to sharpen selectively in a book which comes form an internationally recognized authority on digital imaging and color image reproduction. Chapters assume a basic grounding in Photoshop but go further in describing the sharpening process.
5-0 out of 5 stars In Focus
There are plenty of books by Photoshop gurus that explain the software's tone and color controls and most users can usually master these functions if they make a serious effort. But one function that always seems rather inexact is the detail function, as exemplified by the sharpening tools. This still seems to be a rather hit or miss proposition, and there has long been a need for more detailed instruction on this function.Fraser takes the function on, and even if you don't agree with all his recommendations, this book should clarify what sharpening is about.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book nicely compiles all of the information regarding multi-stage sharpening workflows Mr. Fraser has previously published in various articles over the years. If you've never read any of them, then this is a definite must buy. If you've read all of them, you won't find a lot of new information here aside from the highly welcome detailed explanation of CS2's Smart Sharpen filter. Adobe's own documentation has always been pretty ambiguous as to what all the little checkboxes and sliders do in the new dialog.
