5-0 out of 5 stars Straightforward Approach to Learning a Simple Software.
I just created a website in Dreamweaver for a client with the end expectation that they would be able to use Contribute to edit their site without a lot of headache. Contribute proved to be absolutely simple to setup and use for this task after I read through this book.
1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I have in the past eagerly bought books from the Visual Quickstart Guide series, but this one is a terrible disappointment. It has all the weaknesses of the series (such as tiny font in the screen snapshots), and none of the strength.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recomended
If you are going to use Contribute for anything more than the very basics, I highly recommend this book.As of this writing it is the only book I know of about Contribute 3 that is really written for version 3 and not a version 2 book with new graphics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book breezes through the basics and then isn't able to deliver on the advanced. There's very little information about the features and functions but I did find a section on how to dress!!! This is supposed to be about the program POWERPOINT, not about presentation basics.
3-0 out of 5 stars Content without Soul
This book has so much content that if you wanted to write an exam on PowerPoint, you could just remember the sentences in this book. What the book doesn't do is tell you why you would want to do things in the way Wempen explains. In a phrase, the book has no soul. It's just a compilation of what PowerPoint's menus can do in so much detail that it hurts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Letdown CD
The book is quite detailed but everybody can put in a few shareware programs and templates on a CD these days. This CD is a complete letdown. I wish they remove the CD and reduce the cost of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book and I'm Not Crying Wolf
I purchased this title as a supplemental text for a Master's course I was taking in Advanced Graphics and Multimedia. It was the most practical resource I had available to me.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must in every sense
If you're new to flash or you know the basics, this is the right book for you. Covers any possibility and guides you step by step even before you can touch a computer! The first chapters explains how Flash works, just as any other flash book, but also explains all the differences using flash for animation instead of web design, and contains an useful description about how you can optimize and reduce your files size for optimum performance, and more important, the differences between TV and video output and web animation file sizes, frame rates and screen proportions. This part often is not included in most flash books and it's essential for ambitious proyects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
I started using SolidWorks three months ago. SolidWorks is a great product. I work for a small engineering consulting company that does not have money for training. I'm the only design engineer using SW.
5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Keeper!
I contacted my local SW VAR and requested information on which book is the best to learn SolidWorks.I had the SW Hands on test drive book and wanted a second book that provided additional in depth information. This is a great book. The book is extremely well written, very intuitive and easy to follow. The book covers key features such as: Extruded, Revolved, Dome, Shell, Fillet, Hole Wizard and Circular Pattern to name a few. The section on Sheet metal was engaging. This is a keeper and a great reference book for any designer or engineer that uses SW!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for 2006
This is the first SW book that I purchased. The book is awesome! The layout is simple to follow, it provides great step by step instructions with clear screen illustrations in each area. The included book CD is great to watch and learn the proper design techniques for each feature.I found myself watching the movies on the book's CD as the mating techniques and the number of components became more challenging at my experience level. It's definitely worth a look. It is clear and to the point.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book!
This book is covering a lot of issues related to live sound reinforcement. I recommend it to the beginners and intermediate soundpersons. If you want to be an FOH operator this book is for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars Basics, but not a lot more.
Well, if you are just starting out with sound, or need to fill in gaps in knowledge about sound reinforcement hardware or audio principles, this book is very plain english and explains everything in an understandable manner without being overly technical (not much math!). It covers all the topics one should be familiar with, speakers, amps, frequencies, microphones etc. and what they do. The discussion of practical techniques was rather slim, although a book to cover even a decent quantity of scenarios would be huge and expensive, and people may not want to part with knowledge for which they receive fat paychecks! As a musician and amateur soundperson for the school where I work, I was familiar with most of what was written and only found a few new ideas for doing sound reinforcement. A great book for anyone getting started.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly, a Disappointment
If you hate theory, you will love this book. The author makes certain that you do not glean any insights into how Elements 3 works. If you want to crack this book open each time you use Elements, and follow the button-clicking instructions, you will always be on Square One, if that is what you like. For instance, Layers are never described or explained. There is no chapter on Layers. No mention of Layers, the Layers Palette, or Backgrounds, until: "Make a copy of the photo by dragging-and-dropping your Background Layer on the Create a New Layer icon at the top of the Layers palette. This will create a layer titled "Background Copy." No definition of any of these terms has appeared, and presto, you are supposed to know what he is talking about.
5-0 out of 5 stars Scott Kelby is My Favorite Photoshop Author
First a confession! Scott Kelby is my favorite Photoshop author/DVD presenter. (Eat your heart out Deke McClelland, my second choice!)
5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, simple to follow
I am an enthusiastic amateur photographer, not a pro.But I enjoy "post processing" my digital images and Photoshop Elements is a good product to use.But there are many nuances to the product and Scott Kelby does an excellent job at presenting those capabilities. His examples are straightforward and useful.I recommend this book highly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction
Iam a college student and my ambhition seems to be leaning towards film editing for the past couple of years I have worked with Final Cut Pro which was a farely simple , yet complex peice of editing software. This year Iam in an advanced class where our teacher has stressed to us to work with some Adobe After Effects 7 in additon with final cut pro I bought this book to help me further understand the software. The first time I opened up After Effects I will admit I was Iniminated I tried fooling around with some of the panels and stuff and couldnt figure anything out ,, So now I have started from chapter 1 with this book I inserted the dvd that it comes with into the computer which has sort of a classroom in a book feel to this book but much better.. Go through the chapters using the source clips provided on the dvd. This has helped me understand what After Effects is about now Iam not finished with this book yet but wanted to write a review on this because it has helped me with its easy reading and keyboard shortcuts for both pc and mac.It explains every small detail in easy to understand language there is no computer/video editor slang.. If you are looking for a good editing book and you have Adobe After Effects 7.0 This is its Bible not the manual , which tends to use more slang assming that the purchaser knows what they are talking about , the manual tends to make things more difficult. This book makes even someone has never worked with film editing able to accomplish what they would like and learn the software.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
I bought this book based on the feedback on this page. And although I would not call the book unusable, it has a lot of scope for improvement. The book layout is terrible and there is almost zero cross refrencing in the book itself. Imagine the author does not ask the reader to look in another part of the book for more information. So my verdict is that although the book has good content, it's laid out in a haphazard way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
I love this book. The reason I gave this book 4 stars is because it hopelessly fails trying to get into PowerPoint programming territory. The author should have stayed away from this area and concentrated more on beginner issues. After all, this certainly is a beginner's book. In fact, it's as good as the missing PowerPoint manual. If you want to go beyond the manual, check out the well explained Cutting Edge PowerPoint by Geetesh Bajaj. It makes a great complement to this book. And if you want to do more programming, check out Powerful PowerPoint for Educators by David Marcovitz. And for troubleshooting PowerPoint, look at Fixing PowerPoint Annoyances by Echo Swinford.

This updated edition has been revamped with new tips for the latest version of Photoshop. It has Davis' usual mix of practical techniques with impressive illustrations that show the kind of results you can expect.A DVD set is also available if you want to watch the lessons on your computer. All in all a good entry in the Wow series.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Wow: Photoshop for Photography(2nd Edition)
This book is amazing. It helped take my Photoshop skills to the next level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy and be Wowed
I had the pleasure of sitting through Jack's class while on a Geek Cruise called "Macmania" and he refered to his book. I bought it wondering just how good the book would be relative to Jack in the flesh and I have to say that the book presents very well indeed. This is not always true for some teachers but Jack has the gift to be able to clearly and effectively communicate the needed information to make Photoshop sing for non-professional (and even them at times!) users. The title of "how to wow" really does say it all. The book is full of easy to use techniques that will really punch up an average picture to near-fine art quality, assuming it's a good picture to start. And even then, it can really help salvage a picture that might be so-so to a very acceptable picture. Many of the techniques are very easy to use and make alot of sense once you try it once. In my own case, I used his tips on distortionfilters to straighten out a picture of a building in just seconds. No bellows needed or fancy 3rd party filters needed. He shows how to selectively adjust contrast, color, brightness, color correction and alot more without the typical photoshop overhead of a dozen layers and such. He does push the use of raw files and after watching what can be done with raw files, I can see why. But, he does not leave those who can only shoot JPEGs behind, many of tips and tricks work just as well with JPEGs and he demos them that way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author is out of touch
I'm sorry to report that Alan Cooper appears to be years out of touch with the software industry. He lobbies for a new 'interaction design' class of professionals working toward designing how the user sees the system - but the industry started doing these things a good 15-20 years ago. Also, he assertions that "in software, typically nothing is visible until it is done" is just plain wrong today; 20 years ago that was true but the software industry today uses storyboards, paper usability reviews, UI mockups, prototypes, etc all with the intent of designing a user friendly interface before the first line of code is written. He starts off with flawed assumptions and ignorance and goes downhill from there.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for IT developers, designers and managers
Cooper's observations are right on. Many books on interaction design deal mainly with design examples and methods. "Inmates" has some of that, but the best part focuses on IT business culture, and the obstacles it poses for creating usable and desirable software and websites. It's a passionate, eloquent, 'non-sugar coated' manifesto for software that doesn't make people feel stupid, and what's needed to make that happen.
1-0 out of 5 stars He quoted Parkinson's law
From the book: "Managers know that software development follows Parkinson's Law: Work will expand to fill the time alloted to it." This is such an outdated idea and method for managers to deal with software engineers the rest of the book was tainted for me by his obvious distain for software engineers. Only the worst kind of un-trusting manager would assume that his engineers will naturally drag their feet if the schedule allows it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nielson disappoints again
Admittedly, I've been biased against Nielson's works since the publication of `Designing Web Usability' in 1999; finding his tendency to oversimplify and `deconstruct' rather ineffectual. And as usual, `Homepage Usability' disappoints as an overly sensational and inaccurate evaluation of homepage usability. There are good parts, in particular, the statistics you may want to reference for your own usability initiatives. But the `50 webpages deconstructed' portion is not much more than Nielson spewing hot air. If you learn (or are entertained) best through critique by an impossible standard and ideal, by all means, this book is for you. If you are looking for a USABLE and real life guide to homepage design, look elsewhere.

3-0 out of 5 stars Jakob Nielsen is a huge dork!
I was forced to use this book for college in a "Website Admin" class.I think the first 53 pages make a good reference for web design but the rest of it is all about how fortune 500 companies have bad websites.Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, etc... come on now, these companies ARE the internet and this guy is "deconstructing" them and critisizing what they do wrong.Anyway, design is completely relative so use this as a guide only.By the way... pages 54 through 320 can be removed as far as i'm concerned.
4-0 out of 5 stars detailed critiques of major websites
This book excels in giving detailed critiques of the home pages of 50 prominent websites. These include Microsoft, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, General Electric and Boeing. The websites span the gamut from appealing to a mass audience, like Amazon and MTV, to more specialised corporate sites like GE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial book on Flash
This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program
Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great.
this book is great - it is not too advanced for beginners. It walks you through director setup, but also allows for you to skip to the more advanced stuff. Its a great book for any level and is engaging, and an easy read. I recomend it strongly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Almost good
This book is good...but i would really like it it has a little more picture on the steps.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY HELPFUL!
having learned the basics of director in a class was a good start to the program, but being the MONSTER that director is, a 'beginner' like myself, definitely needs the extra help. This book is relatively easy to understand, (relative because the program itself is just so complex), and is thorough.I found solutions for problems in the book that I could not find on the Macromedia website!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn Rhino ....
This book provides plenty of examples, grouped in a context in which they will be used. Some Nurbs, modeling theory and troubleshooting tips. Enough to answer questions as you go through the text but not so much as to be overwhelming.
1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Do not buy this book. Instead buy the online Rhino video tips from Mcneel. I bought this book expecting to learn something only to discover that the stuff I learned was useless.1-0 out of 5 stars Save your time and money
Numerous omissions and typos made for a very frustrating read.Mislabeled drawings and missing or erroneous instructions made exercises difficult to follow. Fundamental exercises were superficial and fragmented without logical development or context making retention difficult.Rhino's supplied Level 1 and Level 2 Training Materials are far superior in all regards. Don't waste your time and money. The publisher and author were e-mailed regarding problems but no response. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am so happy to have found this book and DVD lesson
I have needed InDesign Training for a very long time.It is the only program the agency I work for is allowed to use, but I live in the middle of nowhere and have been unable to attend classes. This book and 2 hour DVD lesson totally has gotten me up to speed on making page layouts.I only wish I had bought it from Amazon instead of Barnes and Noble, I would have saved $15.At any rate, get this book. The best thing about it is that the author uses PRACTICAL examples for doing things. Most computer books expect you to know things already.Well, I didn't know squat. Now I do.The author runs you through simple examples, getting more and more complex with functions, until you have it down.I love that!I loved this book so much I ordered his Photoshop book too since I need to learn that program. So, if you bought InDesign CS2 and need help from the get go, GET THIS BOOK FIRST!

5-0 out of 5 stars If it wasn't for Deke....
I would never have tackled InDesign CS2 without this book. Deke lays it out, so to speak, in every way. Do-along lessons, The DVD and the large pictures showing you what it should look like create a visual safety net. You almost can't go wrong. The book lessons are so clear and Deke takes you through every way to do a thing in each lesson. If you're a keyboard freak there are keyboard shortcuts galore, include Deke Keys which you can install with the lessons. I am more of a mouse person and Deke makes sure to outline all the ways you can use the mouse to access pallets and work with graphics and text. Deke is enthusiastic about the software but brutally honest about it's few shortcomings. Best of all, he takes you through the trickiest parts of the learning process and manages to be funny all the while. I always love Deke's lesson plans. Instead of using a stuffy business format for the sample documents he presents you with projects like Little Pupper Friend's Cookie Recipe or Professor Shembops 1970's pop music quiz. It all feels less intimidating. Another good thing is the way Deke explains things for those of us who have been using PageMaker or QuarkXPress. Adobe InDesign CS2 One on One is a wonderful way to learn. The book is great for design people who are not particularly "techie". Still, InDesign CS2 is not for sissies.I know this sounds nutty, but I feel like Deke is right here with me every step of the way.

3-0 out of 5 stars Enough with the shortcuts already
I bought this book because of the extensive amount of instructional video that accompanies the written text. It was something I was looking for in an instructional book - and I didn't find another book with 2+ hours of video. However, after only completing four of the chapters I cannot help but be bothered by the fact that the author has an awful habit of telling you ever possible shortcut configuration for every function. He spends an inordinate amount of time explaining all the shortcut possibilities which is very distracting when you are trying to follow along with an exercise. It's great to know all these handy shortcuts, but if you are just starting to learn InDesign (and I'm guessing here) you initially just want the basics. This approach really slows down the process. Unfortunately, these "shortcut digressions" seem to continue throughout the book. The video content (and the book content) probably could have been reduced by about 30-40% if he didn't labor about every possible shortcut every other sentence. In all fairness the book does contain a lot of content, but I am kinda disappointed by the video. They could have made this potentially excellent book truly excellent if they made an appendix of all these shortcuts rather than cram every option into every exercise. Very distracting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Speed Clinic Delivers!
Since I was new to PhotoShop CS2, upgrading from years with PS Elements, I started with basic, highly recommended massive tutorial type PS CS2 books first. I had a "second tier" list of PhotoShop books for purchase consideration after I became at least semi-literate in PS CS2. This was near the top of my "second tier" book list - it should have been one of the FIRST PhotoShop books I bought!
5-0 out of 5 stars Paid for itself in the First Chapter
After finishing the first chapter of Matt Koskowski's book I knew it had paid for itself already. After the second chapter I felt guilty that I hadn't paid more for the book. After finishing it I felt as if I should send more money to the author or publisher or someone. What a terrific book.Kloskowski presented this vital information the same way he teaches in his clinics and on his video lessons; that is, with perfect clarity and with relevant examples. This is one terrific book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book A Must Have for any Photoshop User
I have read this book and it is a must have for any type of Photoshop user. The tips in this book are a big time saver. The title of the book describes it all! Matt is truly a nice person and very knowledgable in the world of Photoshop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A little chunky, but a good necessary work
I'm not a fan of the 'group of papers' style of book. But this book pulls it off nicely. The text is consistenly good throughout. And the illustrations and formulas are high quality and presented nicely.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to OpenGL Shading Language
The recent trend in graphics hardware has been to replace fixed functionality with programmability in areas that have grown exceedingly complex (e.g., vertex processing and fragment processing). The OpenGL Shading Language has been designed to allow application programmers to express the processing that occurs at those programmable points of the OpenGL pipeline. Independently compilable units that are written in this language are called shaders. A program is a set of shaders that are compiled and linked together. The OpenGL Shading Language is based on ANSI C and many of the features have been retained except when they conflict with performance or ease of implementation. This shading language is without a doubt the most important addition to OpenGL since its inception, and this book provides an excellent guide to programming with it. The author was one of the primary contributors to the development of the language, and he provides a well-written and insightful explanation of the language and its use.
