4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I have seen some reviews that said this can't be used to learn Photoshop from the ground up, but that is untrue, because I used this book to teach myself Photoshop with absolutely no prior knowledge whatsoever, and it does a wonderful job of explaining everything. It pretty much covers everything, and I consider it a must have. The only reason it may not be for someone is if they don't learn well from just reading; that, I admit, is a downside of this book. Sometimes it can be difficult to understand what they are talking about by just reading the instructions. If you are sitting by the computer though, it's very easy to follow step by step. If you choose to buy a book with lessons, such as classroom in a book, then I definitely recommend this book as a follow-up.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Great Book!!!
I'm a member of an online gaming community and I was wanting to learn how to make my own "Sigs". After a few hours of reading I was able to use layers to make my first kool looking sig. I also was able to use Photoshop for all the graphics on my web site. If you want to learn to use Photoshop, then this book is a MUST have...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent bible for the bumbling novice
First I need to give a nod to "Gunny", the reviewer who convinced me to purchase this book: Thank you! This is truly the best Illustrator guide available for beginners, who need to find their painful path through the inscrutable thicket of Illustrator, who need to get a graphic project done, quickly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, As Usual
Visual Quick Start Guides and I were introduced in college. Each one I have used is: supremely instructive, light to nonexistent on self absorbed asides (a blessed relief), and meaty...very meaty. The paper isn't glossy, the images aren't in color, you get no adorable photos of the author with their children frolicking on the sands of Southern California. But you get information about how to use Adobe products (and anything else you want to tackle) so that you, in your miserable Midwestern hovel, far from the smiling shores of the Pacific rim, can accomplish your tasks for your demanding and sniffy clients and get paid, and not go to the poor house! Tres cool, no?

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, we even use it at Microsoft ...
I am working on a commercial XML application at Microsoft that is heavily leveraging WPF and pretty much all of the devs on my project that are developing in WPF have this book sitting open on their desks right now.It is a really great, easy to read and understandable book. You still need the detailed documentation on MSDN when you want to see all of the API details but if you want a logical, understandable walk throught WPF this is the book.
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Out Of Date
While Avalon aka Windows Presentation Framework is still in beta, I had hoped that the code examples and references in this book would not be far out of date.I am finding that they are dramatically out of date (writing this review 04/27/2006).This is not to criticize the quality of the book or of the content; it appears to be well written. However, it was written in September 2005, and there has been at least 3 new beta releases of the framework since then.About 1/2 of the examples I have tried will not even compile, or have bad runtime errors.
5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough grounding
The nascent WinFX API, of which Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is a part, is one of the most exciting developments in Windows programming in years. Though the technology is still in beta (it is slated to ship with Windows Vista in late 2006 or early 2007), it can be used to build working applications now, in either the Vista beta or Windows XP with Service Pack 2, allowing the adventurous developer to get a jump start in the technology that will drive Windows development for the next decade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners
I understand a lot about project management, but being a developer I had never learned to really use MS Project. I picked up this book and followed it from beginning to end, using the accompanying CD-ROM. I learned more about Project in the few hours it took to go through the book than I thought I would.5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for a good start
First of all, this book is for beginners to MS Project. You can read this book chapter by chapter, or you can pick chapters to study since there is no referencing for past chapters or following chapters. 5-0 out of 5 stars Teach yourself!
This is a great book to teach yourself more than you ever wanted to know on Microsoft Project 2000.This book takes you through STEP BY STEP on how to use Microsoft Project and gives you great samples on the enclosed CD.If only the instructors in school would have made it this easy!Very easy to follow and use.Highly Recommended. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great starter but a little thin
This VQS book gives a great high-level of a broad spectrum of functionality of Flash but does not go into much detail. Good starter book.

Adobe and Macromedia both write excellent software but both have two things in common - the lack of being user friendly and intuitive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great recipes, easy steps, wonderful results.
This book puts you on the fast track to grafting the styles of famous artists into your own work through more than five dozen easy-to-follow recipes. Not surprisingly, you'll find yourself learning more than you originally expected to about Photoshop.

2-0 out of 5 stars not-so-fast ...
Earlier this year I reviewed what many will see as the companion volume to this book ("Photoshop Blending Modes Cookbook for Digital Photographers"), written by the same author. Unfortunately, the newer publication is less useful. It seems to have been written on a pretext that it's clever to be able to duplicate what traditional artists can do. This seems - from my own personal viewpoint - to be greatly undervaluing the power of Photoshop (and similar software). Practitioners of digital fine art should (really, constructively) be looking to explore what the principles of prior and traditional art can mean within a new domain.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Windows Media Formats
Despite it being three years since the release of this book, it remains the definitive guide to dealing with most Windows Media Streaming issues. To date, it's the single most useful book available on working with the WMA, WMV, and ASF formats. Starting with the basics of explaining the difference between streaming and downloading, the book immediately jumps into all the nitty-gritty details related to encoding audio and video files for streaming, the complex considerations for outfitting a streaming server, when to use unicast or multicast, creation of on-the-fly server side playlists, and some of the most comprehensive compression formulas available. While there are obviously competing alternatives to the Windows Media content delivery solutions, the Windows Media Resource Kit provides a compelling argument for why the Windows Media solution may be among the most effective available. Yes, Windows Media Player 10 is out now and Windows Media Player 11 is coming soon, but the information contained in this guide will be relevant for content delivery at least until the release of Windows Vista. I hesitate to call this the bible of Windows Media content creation and management, but it comes close.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it
This book is really a complete waste of money - it can only be used for developing quick and dirty solutions using the windows media player and so on.
5-0 out of 5 stars A whole new set of ideas from reading this book.
I thought that the Media player was used for videos, music and online content. While this is true there is so much more that can be done with the application and this book will help guide you through.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My first choice for a manual replacement
The Visual Quickstart series is, in my opinion, the best replacement for a manual, or for those excuses for a manual that appear in software boxes. The Photoshop Elements book fits that need to a T. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Format, Good Writing, Good Book
I like the format of the Visual QuickStart Guides. Generally speaking, the pages are divided into two columns. The outside column has a headline explaining what the page is about and text to describe how to do it, and perhaps include a bit of explanation or a Tip. The inside column has a screen shot of what the monitor should look like as you do that particular operation. This is combined with an index that directs you to the page based on what you need to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll be writing X code in no time flat
This is a wonderful book. I get this now; this is something I never thought I'd be able to say. It's clearly written (except for a couple thousand typos, but you can get past them pretty easily), nicely organized, and really an easy read. Read this in front of a computer screen, try some of the examples, and you can't miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie Maker!
If you have made slideshows and used pictures in PowerPoint or other programs, give Movie Maker a shot. Then after you fiddle with Movie Maker, give this book a shot. I have found it to be the very best guide to Movie Maker available and I don't think you will be disappointed. It gives a very good description of Movie Maker from top to bottom and the pictures on every page are beautiful and glossy. It is clear that the author spent a lot of time working on the book and it only benefits us as readers. Good luck with your movies and good luck with this book too. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars thorough, clear and structured
I am a beginner with Avid and was daunted by all the different and options available to me. Monohan's book was just what I needed. I am currently giong through the book from A to Z, which gives me an overview of all the options and work-methods the program has. Even though I allready had set up my workspace, this book gave me some interesting tips. Even though I had allready developed a workflow for my previous projects, I learned some new options by reading this book.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Manual
I wish I just had the manual that came with the program. Often times you find the book more so telling you what it can do rather than how to actually do it. All in all, with it's help and a little time spent with the editing system you can figure this program out. It doesn't stray too far from the other major non-linear editing systems. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It does the job but I want more
If you a looking for a fast guide so that you can produce simple music withou much thinking, try this one. I used it ans it gave me some insights, but I really missed more in-depth explanations of key concepts, and more explanations about the consequences of my tweaks. The tutorials as much more "do this and then do that", than "do this, and this will happen, otherwise, this will happen because of this", which I prefer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not really what i needed but........
The book is great, but for the newest of the newest users of reason. Also, it is of utmost importance to have some sort of midi controlling device in your posession before buying this book, as the book references the useage of your "assumed" midi controller. So, if you dont have one, you will find yourself skipping several large sections of the text.
5-0 out of 5 stars Einstein would have loved this book...
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction (Albert Einstein)."This book makes the complex seem really simple.I'd recommend this book for a couple of reasons: 1) finally, a book that EXPLAINS the knobs and faders in layman's terms!; 2) it doesn't read like a typical book, in that the author makes minimal use of text and relies heavily on graphics (a picture IS worth 1,000 words); 3) the graphics are optimally labeled/captioned; 4) it follows a logical progression, rarely introducing you to concepts that are overwhelming without having first provided the fundamental building blocks/context behind them; 5) It is a great reference to keep next to you on your computer desk, even after you've mastered the basics and played with it at an intermediate level (re-readable); and 6) it is written in such a way that I embrace it, rather than loathe it, and it simply inspires me to sit down with the program and jump the hurdles like an Olympic gold-medalist.The only thing I wish this book had is a Glossary. But I can live without that.I'd highly recommend this book to Reason 3.0 users at a beginner to intermediate level. Please feel free to disagree with my opinion; let us compare opinions, invite a few more points of view, and debate, like the humans we are. ... This the most extensive, best explained Windows GDI book ever read by me! I hereby highly recommend this book to everyone who is doing GDI intensive work.1-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage, Poorly Written
After spending several weeks going over the contents of this book, I do not recommend it to the beginning or intermediate readers.Feng Yuan insight into the Visual C++ environment is excellent; however, he does a very poor job with organizing and explaining the topic to the average reader.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guide to Illustrator CS
I purchased this book upon the recommendation of my professor for a college class in Computer Design. It is my first experience with the Visual QuickStart Guides and I am very impressed. It has been a valuable tool in helping me understand and use this previously unfamiliar software application. The table of contents is clear and well organized and the index is very extensive--I refer to it constantly. The book uses many illustrations with clear instructions and explanations. Commands and shortcuts and given for both Mac and Windows. I would definitely purchase another Visual QuickStart Guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book
this is a good reference book if you don't need to go to deep into the program.I recently upgraded to Illustrator CS and a few of the things confused me i.e. how the text to path tool works....so I bought this book as a quick reference and it has done a great job of fulfilling that purpose.
5-0 out of 5 stars Visual QuickStart - Illustrator CS
The book has helped me learned or brush up on the application in matter of minutes. It's concise and it saves time when learning new things during crunch time. For more, in-depth, sunject matter, a more advanced book is required. This done does a job well for beginners! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why Your Printed Imaged Doesn't Match What's on the Screen
Color used to be so simple, you left it to someone else to handle. To be sure you could select the film you wanted to use to highlight blues or reds or whatever, and when printing the image you had some control over the printing process. With the advent of desktop publishing this has changed. Color management is in your hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars X11 programming is complex, this book helps
Unfortunately, X11 programming is extremely complex. This book is not perfect, but does guide you through the labyrinth. If you are going to program in X11, you need to get this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately there are no alternatives..
This book is a basic introduction to programming X11 directly with Xlib. It is not obvious that Adrian Nye is the best expert to learn from. Often it seems like he wrote the book in an attempt to try to make sense of the X11 system himself. Parts of it are extremely unclear, but at least we should give him credit for trying to explain everything, even those parts he wasn't entirely sure about.2-0 out of 5 stars Reading this book is alot like reading "spaghetti" code.
It seems that everything having to do with X is overly flexible and overly complicated in certain areas while lacking in some of the basics. This book is no different. The author seems to provide alot of details of Xlib. However, these details are usually useless because his explanations are so difficult to understand. His explanations always seem to require a thorough understanding of other topics and terms that are never explained completely, or are explained much later in the book. Then, on the flip side, simple obvious concepts are repeated over and over and over... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Good book about unbelievable piece of junk software
The book is good. The software is plain horrible. It sounds a strange combination but how you could qualify a memory hog which eventually shuts down my pretty good home computer with 2 GB of memory, with horrible boot time, and random crashes or hangs and features I would not care for in ages, like ability to keep my media on INet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
I started with Jan's book on Studio 9 and was hooked. When I upgraded to Studio 10 I went at once to Amazon and ordered his book on Studio 10. If you want to really learn Studio 10 then this book will make you a happy camper.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential book for Studio 10 users
Once again Jan Ozer has produced a most valuable book for Studio users. My suggestion would be to retire the Studio 10 Manual to the back of the bookcase, Jans book has all the answers in clear and easy to follow instructions, with plenty of illustrations. It's the only book you will need to get the most out of Studio 10. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for my users
I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.
