Beware!!!
This is not a book - at best it is the notes for an article repscrambled, repeated and recycled to fill the space between the covers. The best I can say is that although I felt stupid for having bought it in the first place, I get some satisfaction from knowing that the two men who put their names on the cover have distinguished themselves as complete dolts!

No preamble, I loved it.
What a beautiful little book!
Overclocking CPU (Hack 21) at your own risk
Overclocking CPU (Hack 21) is not as easy as adding more memory or upgrading the hard disk.If you have nothing to lose, you might think about overclocking the CPU.Manufacturers may not honor the warranty on an overclocked CPU. The modifications may also void the warranty on the motherboard and other components (such as video card & hard drives).
OK book, but lacking in content
The title of this book should be "Windows PC Hacks" since 99% of the hacks are Windows based.If you no longer use Microsoft products (like me), this is not a very good book for you.

Don't waste your money on this book, unless you want to go back to older versions of Linux...
Worth the reading.
Follow simple step by step procedures to hardening your linux system, i was able to read the meat of this book in a 4 hour airplane flight. Easily install and configure Linux, firewalls, etc.

Cyberpunk really is dead..the appearance of the official handbook clinched it.If you want to learn how to hack, don't buy this book.If you want to become a phone phreak, don't buy this book.If you want to become a cypherpunk or a coder, don't buy this book.If you're familiar with the genre of cyberpunk as literature or have had contact with subcultures that could be considered cyberpunk, get this book if you want to get a chuckle or two, or try to recognise some of the folks who posed for this book.If you're looking for net.culture to be lampooned nine ways from Sunday, get this book.

A beginners guide
If you are new to the Forensic game then this book might make good reading. A large portion of the book is on disk and data structure & geometry. This makes for interesting reading if you have not covered this before, but if you are an investigator, this will be 'old' and somewhat irrelevant news.Read more

Amazingly bad
This book should be titled, Internet Security for Complete Idiots. If you think it's a good book, it's because you don't know much about Internet security. If you're a security professional and you think it's a good book, find a new career.

Simply a mess to read
I had no previous experience with lockpicking, so in a sence I did actually learn something (=to open my pin-lock). That's what the book gets 1 star for. The same information is however also available for free on the Internet, just google for "lockpicking tutorial" or something similar.
Good content with humor
Cool book. Was more impressed with learning how to crack combination locks than picking locks. In fact, I learn more from the authors computer website than I did in college.

Useful Info, Dreadful Editing
There are nuggets of useful information in this book, but they are somewhat thinly scattered among a lot of very clumsy sentences, some of which don't parse at all.Whoever edited this (or didn't) did a real disservice to the author.If the subject is of value to you, get a used version soon (before the info goes out of date), and don't pay a lot for it, or you'll regret the expense.
Lots of VERY basicinformation
If you have spent any time with your GPS unit you will find little if any new information in here. A lot of the book covers the basics that you will already know... and there is a whole chapter devoted to how to take a screenshoot of your GPS screens. The chapter is just a lot of pictures of screens.

The target audience for the surveillance book
In light of the previous review, I thought it would be useful to clarify the audience for people considering buying this book.Understanding Surveillance Technologies wasn't written for hands-on hobbyists or electronics buffs. There are some really good books out there with detailed schematics on designing cameras, audio devices, and more. Instead, this book was written to fill a glaring need for a comprehensive text introducing and explaining the scope of surveillance technologies and the many fields in which it is being used, including traffic and community safety, DNA testing, corporate and retail surveillance, and much more. Practically useless
To read this book is a complete waste of time, at least if you are interested in technical information. "Industry standard introductory text" well-deserved
While those interested in specific cutting edge surveillance technologies per se will not find much of value here, those who want a sweeping reference to EVERYTHING (well, almost) in the field definitely need this book. The meticulous research on historical development of the various technologies is evident, and though technical detail is absent, readers are still given a good ideal of how things work. A mind-boggling array of available applications is presented, together with societal and legislative concerns. The modular structure of the chapters and the many references to resources elsewhere make this book a convenient starting point for both readers who want only an overview, and those who need to delve deeper into a particular technology.Read more

Awesome stuff about infrastructure attacks
Here is the thing - I am giving this book a high score (4) since it contains unique and fun content related to network infrastructure attacks and defenses, which I have not seen anywhere else. In my view, the good stuff justifies such score, although I suspect that some other reviewers will sledgehammer the book for having too much of routine material covered in other previous books, including the venerable Hacking Exposed.
Good broad coverage
The book has two major sections: (a) configuration and maintenance practices, and (b) techniques for vulnerability assessment. The breadth of coverage of many modern techniques and terminology is very good; they go in-depth on a few topics here and there.

Not realistic
I'm interested in X10 projects as well as other home automation projects throughout the house but I thought this book was a little out of tune to what you realistically would do. I was captured by measuring the temperature of a grill and adjusting the heat. This is showing you a control for a "smoker." Other items you can easily find on the internet such as X10 devices, sprinkler control, etc.
