4-0 out of 5 stars Forget 007
Secrets of Computer Espionage: by Joel McNamara is a must for any PC user. Staffed with so many examples (with a conversational funny tone) the book does a really good job. The book stresses the vulnerabilities and threats, explains in details the evolution of spy tactics, network eavesdropping and provide countermeasures as well.
4-0 out of 5 stars Informative look at the risks of digital espionage
Judging from the title, Secrets of Computer Espionage: Tactics and Countermeasures would appear to be geared to governments, security agencies, or high-level corporations. In fact, as the author makes clear, anyone with an Internet connection is a potential target of online espionage-even by such "mundane" means as viruses, worms, and phishing attacks-and this book is addressed to that huge audience.
5-0 out of 5 stars Secrets of Computer Espionage
The "Secrets of Computer Espionage" by Joel McNamara unveils what every PC user should know before they hop on to the internet Bandwagon. If you can read this review, then you need to purchase this book.Cyber Crime is the number one precursor to identity theft and the simple thruth is -- Internet Security is YOURresponsibility.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars In a world with few Windows-specific options, this is a helpful forensics book
I decided to read and review three digital forensics books in order to gauge their strengths and weaknesses: "File System Forensic Analysis" (FSFA) by Brian Carrier, "Windows Forensics" (WF) by Chad Steel, and "EnCase Computer Forensics" (ECF) by Steve Bunting and William Wei.All three books contain the word "forensics" in the title, but they are very different. If you want authoritative and deeply technical guidance on understanding file systems, read FSFA.If you want to focus on understanding Windows from an investigator's standpoint, read WA.If you want to know more about EnCase (and are willing to tolerate or ignore information about forensics itself), read ECF.
5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, the right book for Windows forensics
I have to say, like the next geek, I get frustrated by the lack of Linux/Unix use on the desktops of the corporate world; however, the fact is that Windows desktops outnumber Linux/Unix desktops by way more than 100:1. For this reason, it has been very frustrating to me that so many security books focus on Linux/Unix. I don't care if it's the best platform (though I agree); it's not the most common and we need tools on and for Windows.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent focus on corporate security
Just read through my copy of this book.I do Cisco work as a CCSE and SANS certified network security specialist, but have been called on to do some investigations at work as the resident "security geek".

5-0 out of 5 stars Venn's Diagram of Intellectual Commonwealth
"Hackers and Painters" is Dr. Paul Graham's take on big ideas and how it all relates back to computer programming. Yes, the jacket cover categorization is /programming so if you are wondering how come "Revenge of the nerds" and "How to make Wealth" are part of programming education, don't be surprised if you are recommended to read Heidegger for etymology enlightenment as a software developer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excel lent
A bit pricy, but otherwise a nice selection of Excel Tips and tools. In my mind the most useful are those which get around Excels seeming arbitrary limitations like #23,24,25,92 etc. but #42 is worth the price of the book if you haven't figured out a workaround. (it was interesting to contrast how the authors approached this, with my own solution). Not a beginners book or an "intro for Dummies" this is aimed at the user burgeoning on Expert.
3-0 out of 5 stars Excel for those are a step above beginners.
First off this book shouldn't be called 100 tips, it should be 99, it turns out that #12 and #61 are the same tip.Anyways the book isn't bad if your looking for something to help you become more than a beginner excel users. Some of the tips are aren't that great but I'd say for the most part they are quite helpful. The book isn't a bad thing to have at your desk for a quick reference. If you really know excel then this book is not for you and you should probably think about getting a good vba book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good tricks, but....
Good book, I was definitly able to immediately use one or two tricks. If you dont know excel well, this isnt for you.Definitly for the much more advanced users. The best thing is that it specifically helps with the things that many of us recognize as "limitations" of excel. It would be great if they had an online resource for their code and examples, but they dont. Worth the price for an expert trying to expand their skills. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars VOIP : for the serious home user or enterprise deployment
Voice over IP, as with most emerging technologies, in the process of shaking up the world, in this case Public Switched Telephone Network and Plain Old Telephony Service. The author starts of the book off at the most basic entry point for most consumers into the world of VoIP, which is background about the main commerical carriers such as Vonage. The introductary chapters continue to build on the most elementary approach, giving the reader advice on modifying the soft phone[s] that the respective carriers will allow or provide to the consumers, such as alternating ring tones. It isn't long before Ted is explaining how to compeletly re-wire the house over to a pure VoIP infastructure using the existing wiring in your home as well as an, or the ATA provided by the carrier. While this is undoubtly over the casual readers head and possibly comfort level it is good see that this option is explored and explained for those that might not be aware of this solution.
5-0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Do you love to tinker and optimize? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Ted Wallingford, has done an outstanding job of writing a book that contains only a small subset of VoIP knowledge; but, enough to serve as an introduction to the world of VoIP and teach you how to use it to save money, be more productive, or just impress your friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Both fun and informative
I enjoyed reading this book. It's got great information on the different VoIP services and how they work. And it has a bunch of fun recipes that you can use to play with the services. I really enjoyed the one about altering your voice. As well as the information on how to record iChat and Skype. That is really handy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Organized, clearly written, but misleading title
While I enjoyed the author's clear writing style, and I was pleased to see that the level of detail and explanation given in each chapter is consistent, I did not find the book's content to be particularly valuable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book: So many ideas, so little money!
This book presents a great variety of ideas for using the X10 protocol. I'm sure every reader will find several ideas or projects interesting enough to try.
3-0 out of 5 stars Occasional gem, but disappoints overall
"Smart Home Hacks" provides a basic introduction to X10-based home automation, a technology that's been around since the 1970s.For the most part, the book just scratches the surface of the subject and often goes off on unrelated tangents, such as an example of how to build a robot lawnmower. What's missing is a more comprehensive overview of X10-compatible modules and the different ways they might be used to solve home automation problems. For example, irrigation is a very practical application that's ideal for a computer, and there are X10-based models, such as the Rain8 made by WGL designs. But the author chooses to ignore irrigation because of a perceived flooding hazard, even though the Rain8 has an internal limiter that shuts off the water even if no X10 "off" signal is received. Many pages are devoted to computer automation systems sending text-base messages, but no mention is made of voice-based solutions which are much more practical and cost-effective. The newer software applications that are available are impressive but it's amazing how primitive the available hardware is. The book fails to mention one of the biggest obstacles to X10 deployment: the need for a "neutral" (white) wire in household wiring. Since most light switches are wired with a simple 2-wire loop-back for economic reasons, it would require expensive re-wiring to use X10 switches. And, unless I missed it, it fails to discuss the problem of X10 signals not being passed to the "other side" of typical 2-phase house wiring. Only a passing mention is made to the new INSTEON technology that improves upon the old X10 protocol. So, although the book appears to be "current" it reads like it was written five years ago. "Smart Home Hacks" works best as sort of an idea cookbook. You'll find yourself bouncing around from one "recipe" to another but often finding most cool ideas can't be cooked up because of various obstacles (cost, permits, electronic expertise, obscure hardware, and so on).

4-0 out of 5 stars Spruce up your Swing!
The Swing library is what makes Java usable for most users; ask them to interact with a purely text interface, and they'll look at you like you grew a set of antennae. But the Swing library is difficult to absorb due to its size, and to tell the truth, the results I have seen with simple Swing were less than inspiring.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some dubious hacks.
Some of the hacks are, well, very hacky. The auto-completion class here is worthless, more of a bare starting place to mabye make something useful with a lot of work. But why bother when there is better code out there on the web (google "swinguistuff completion", or check out swinglabs).

5-0 out of 5 stars Belongs In Your Swing Toolkit
Simply put, this is an incredibly useful book for Swing programmers. I've written a fair amount of GUI code and have needed several all-encompassing Swing books strewn about my desktop while doing so. Each had their own strengths and weaknesses, so if you had the right collection you could pretty much figure out how to do anything. (Except GridBagLayout of course :-)

1-0 out of 5 stars Piece of Garbage
Understand firstly that this book is old.Wait, one more time, OLD.The amusing thing is one of the authors still tries to shine light on this trash and use it to try and sell security work for the joke of a practice he runs.Give me a b-a-reak.Fed up with with trash like this on a market. If you're dumb enough to buy this book becuz the nuklehead convinced you it was cutting edge - then back slowly away from the book, run it through a shredder and then stick in your cats litter box.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good only if you're a newbie
This book is good ONLY if you're a newbie. If you're in the field, save you're money and buy something with some teeth to it.Such as, Hacking Exposed. The title itself is very misleading. There is no Pen testing.Unless you get all the tools they talk about and launch an attack. The authors are also a little biased on their choices of tools.I can think of better tools to use, in some situation, then what they suggest.All-in-all, it's just an OK book, if you're new...really new.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice look at Unix forensics!
I must admit that some parts of this book are "over my head". However, this book packs quite a punch with much insight into forensics and explanations that are detailed and accompanied by MANY practical examples. The authors do a fine job of making this book interesting and they actually keep it rather short (believe me, most books on the subject are). One possible flaw is that I'd probably prefer for it to have a bit more theory and a bit less practical examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forensic Discovery is a great resource
I read forensic discovery last week on the plane home from San Francisco. After a few chapters I was hooked and could barely put it down to eat. This book is absolutely recommended for anyone at all interested in security concepts as well as system administrators or anyone who would need to understand the way that information exists and persists on computer systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars More informative than books twice its size
This book is full of information on every single step involved in forensic incident response. I've had articles published on this same topic, and found this book informative above and beyond my prior research and industry experience. If you haven't had much IR experience on the UNIX side, you need this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is an eye opening book!!
The book I chose to review was a book on Computer Forensics. Computer forensics is a very helpful easy to read book on investigative techniques for corporate managers or law enforcement. Unauthorized Internet access for employees could potentially grow into a festering tumor for many employers. 1-0 out of 5 stars Left wanting
Lee Barkens book was a major dissappointment. The overall content lacks the descriptiveness one would expect from a book of its title. The reader is lead down an overly linear path of chaotic instruction, devoid of any explanation as to why the chosen method is presented.Wireless Hacking is lacking of any alternative solutions which might highlight or better suit the readers specific needs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just right for me!
This book sets out to educate, inspire and be a resource for building community wireless networks. For me the book lives up to my expectations. When dealing with the elements of building a wireless networks, some topics are difficult to get clear information on. Configuring m0n0wall is a good example. Try looking in the forums!
4-0 out of 5 stars great book with great ideas
I have been wanting to build a community wireless network for a long time now, but digging through google and looking for books turned out to be difficult to find someone else doing something like me, until I found this book.Read the first 30 pages of it in the bookstore and I was hooked, I had to have it.The only problem I see with it is that they seem to do things in a cookie cutter way allowing little flexablity (the 802.11a backhaul is a good idea, but there are other ways than using hardware that is no longer being made and having to do cheap 'hacks' to get things going.I guess thats why it is called wireless 'hacking'.It assumes a good deal of prior knowledge, which for me is great since I am familiar with vi and unix, etc. but a newbie might be a bit confused. They should have made it a bit more friendly for newbies, at times I felt the whole book was somewhat of a hack, like they rushed to throw something together that people could use since nothing else exists like this book. They also seem to focus too much on configuring windows stuff which I find annoying since I use OS X/Linux.Many times it felt like hey were reading my mind, everything I have wanted to do for years, they did.It is a wee bit overpriced though, I would say it's worth $20-25. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars You'll learn a lot about RMS, but at the same time be tired by the simple level.
FREE AS IN FREEDOM is Sam Williams' biography of legendary software developer and political thinker Richard Stallman. Founder of the GNU project, Stallman is little-known outside of a relatively small world of computing cognoscenti, but without him Linux and many other modern computing innovations would hardly be possible. In an interesting twist, the publisher O'Reilly has released this book under the GNU Free Documentation License, meaning that the book may be freely copied and sold.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I find Stallman and Linus a very interesting comparison, especially their motivations. Williams has done a good job of providing the reader insight into a leading thinker in our time. As with most leaders there are those who think he is a genius, those who think he is a fool and those who think he is evil. The choice is of course dependent upon how closely the leader agrees with the observer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good research, but too much fluff and "chicken-little"
Take out the fluff and chicken-little-the-sky-is-falling nonsense, and the meat of this book would make up a small pamphlet. There are many more informative authors on the subject of personal privacy."The Privacy Rights Handbook" is a much better start.
