3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but should have been edited
I just started developing InfoSec policies for my company, and was having a hard time getting started. The Web is filled with sample documents and articles for specific documents, but I needed a resource that assumed I was starting from scratch and would help me build up a good library of content to satisfy our auditors.
5-0 out of 5 stars Really good
Really good for anyone doing infosec policy dev.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical guidebook
This is the best book I've seen (so far!) about writing infosec policies and associated materials.Tom Peltier refers directly to the ISO 17799 structure and gives helpful advice on what to include under the ten sections.More than that, he guides the reader through the *process* of writing and implementing policies, even including a brief chapter on my own specialism, security awareness, and suggestions on writing style.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive wireless security reference
I just installed my own home-based-business wireless network in May, and I have found this book to be incredibly useful in setting up security and also figuring out the odd interruptions and accessibility anomolies that tend to happen with wireless.I like to use this book to quickly find information about basically any security-related wireless topic. It is written clearly and explains what the various codes and messages mean.Of course the messages generated through a wireless system will look geek-like.However, the writing in the book is not geek-speek. This would make a good reference book for anyone in any size of organization to have if they use wireless. It is especially great for those with home wireless systems, as well as small- to medium-sized businesses that typically do not have staff solely dedicated for information security. If you rely upon yourself or others who are not technical to secure your wireless network, then you would definitely benefit from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars No content, no value and a dull read.
Hacking Wireless Networks for Dummies is a terrible book. If you are a regular person with social skills you have likely noticed that computer guys do not know how to communicate. They enjoy being geeky and learning all the techno speak of certain topics so they can try and sound smart. This is exactly what this book is 387 pages of. The authors are classic computer geeks who love their nonsense talk.
5-0 out of 5 stars Peeling back this Layer 2 problem we call Wireless....
Demonstrating all of the weaknesses of each wireless security control that you can put in place, this book proves that Wireless will always be a Layer 2 problem by the in-ability to physically secure the network by it's physical location...period.They have shown me in this book that wireless should be treated like an Internet connection and apply as many controls as you can to prevent penetration. This resource is for users from home, small office, medium businesses, to large corporation's security personnel. This book covers the most common used wireless security measures to the more advanced wireless security standards that are not even fully supported by all wireless vendors yet (802.11i/WPA2). I recommend this book for anyone who has a wireless network or even thinking about it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Weak Source of Information
I felt the book was poorly written and lacked weight in places.Although the high level definitions were accurate, the detail was messy and the writing style was poor. The internet could give you better information and detail then buying this book.I gave it one star because at least the author tried to make the subject matter colorful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real situations explained
This book is a great place to find everything in one place. This is the first book I've ever read that gives you step by step instructions on securing servers. Most of the other books I've read tell you to do it, but they don't tell you how. I especially liked the chapter on wireless networks. My company just installed one and we didn't know that it was open to the public. I've heard that a lot of computer security has to do with basic rules or common sense, but I've never seen it put all in one place and explained so well before.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE This Book!!
This is absolutely the best book I've ever read about networks and security. It isn't a "dumb" book and it's not too simplistic, either. It's perfect for network people who are supposed to be doing security, but don't know where to start. There's lots of stuff in there I never thought about - like your computers being used to attack other computers. There are a lot of checklists and hints to help out companies who don't have a computer security expert on board. Thank you, Ms Cobb for writing such a neat book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book
Probably the readers who rated the book with 1 star did not know that they could download the electronic format of the book from hentzenwerke.com.
1-0 out of 5 stars waste of money
This is nothing but gibberish. More like someone talking about what they know about VFPro in the vaguest of terms. There is no chapter on, 'how to do your first program' or whatever as refered to by one reviewer. I wonder if those 4 star reviewers where paid pumpers or dear friends of the author. I will admit that I did not get past page 54 of the book. That is where I stopped because I found nothing of relevance that would help me improve my skills as a VFP programmer. I consider myself an advanced beginner, so if you are a beginner, do not even attempt to read this book. There is very little continuity, jumping from one useless tip to another without any real usefull or pratical application. It is as if it was put together haphazzardly from a pile of notes, jumpled in with the laundry list.
1-0 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy this book
This book is a complete waste of money. The book doesn't contain ANY relevant information. The authors just goes on and on about NOTHING. They have got to be payed by the number of words, why else put irrelevant quotes on every second or third page?Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Utterly useless
Before 9/11, this was already a joke among people interested in protecting their privacy and assets (e.g., from litigious lawyers). After 9/11, none of the stuff mentioned in this worthless book even remotely works.BTW, the other reviewers are right: he doesn't really tell you *how* to do things anyway!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book is for more affluent folks who already have access to this type of information. Outdated, sexist, even insulting to those who believe in paying their fair share. If you are a regular middle class or working class person who is fed up with paying through the nose to make everyone else richer, you are on the right path but this is NOT the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun with the Unusual
Useful, fun, or just plain strange projects abound in this book. Some of the unusual but useful projects include creating a portable laptop power supply using regular batteries, setting up a surplus Primestar dish antennae to be a 802.11b wireless system capable of almost ten miles, and creating an advanced digital video system. On the other end of the spectrum is making an aquarium inside a MacIntosh, building an 802.11b antenna from a can, hacking a Furby, and creating a car video periscope. And, of course, there are projects between those two extremes. Each project is classified by cost, time and difficulty level making it easy to determine which ones you might want to tackle. An interesting title for the geek who wants to have the unusual that their friends are not likely to have, Hardware Hacking Projects for Geeks is a fun and unusual read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highrise building = LED-style display!?!?
The point of this book is to encourage creative engagement with electro/mechanical technology - to go beyond typical uses - to rediscover the inner inventor and toymaker.
3-0 out of 5 stars Training the young hardware geek
This is a big, floppy paperback full of projects many geeks or would be geeks already know about. After all, the internet leaks this sort of information all over. However despite some of the projects being a little underwhelming for the geek about town, the fifteen projects would probably be the perfect introduction to hardware hacking for a youngster keen to get into electronics and computers.

5-0 out of 5 stars still seems up-to-date although 3 years old.
Great book explaining all the different types of malware out there. Skoudis helps to understand the technical details of each malware type withoutgoing into too much detail. The links provided, altough a few years old, are all still relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book and worth a read
This is a good book.Ed has become a master in this filed and he put tons of good stuff in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Many "big names" in infosec give this a 5 and they're right!
I am fortunate to have an autographed copy from when Mr. Skoudis taught a SANS class I attended; and have had to take a lot of time getting it read in the meantime. This is the book that I would recommend to anyone that would learn the workings of worm, virus, trojan horse and other malware - not how to write them, but how to understand and deal with them. The information on setting up a lab to examine these critters is a good start for those wanting to understand attacks - but like other reviewers have said, this book is not for one without a grounding in computer security. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Expert Knowledge On Hacking Techniques
John Chirillo has made a career of hacking. As a hacking consultant to Fortune 1000 companies part of his job is to break in to corporate networks to expose their holes and help his clients secure their networks. In Hack Attacks Revealed, he shares his knowledge of how hackers gain the information necessary to break into your systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reluctant law abider
I was relieved to read that this isn't considered a very useful reference on How to Hack.Certainly Ch. seems at his most enthusiastic, frothiest, even foamiest, in talking about the wonderful world of hacking.Yeah, he repeatedly trots out the line about having to know how to attack to know how to defend, time after time, but ya' gotta' wonder where his heart lies (Okay, even Milton had this problem.)

1-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get past one sentance...
"Hackers are generally lazy but intelligent, which means they don't like doing something boring that they can program the computer to do for them instead." and thats as far as I got. It irritates me how someone thinks they have enough knowledge on a subject to write a book, yet blatantly has no understanding of the subculture they pretend to have an expertise in. You can get away with this trashy writing in The Daily Mail, but if you're trying to educate people then you're just going to get seen thru straight away.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for those who want to know the Internet
This is a very interesting book, full of web links, tips and Internet resources. This reminds me of another earlier book on Internet web resources but on different topics. Sharing files seems so harmless, and yet it touches on many aspects of our lives. From downloading the innocent MP3 music,to sharing the pirated software (i.e., warez),to browsing pornographic images, this shows how easy one can cross the line. This is certainly a book for the security professionals who would like to have a better understanding of how the hacking underground works, how the secret trading is done from using newsgroups, IRC chats to how hackers use peer-to-peer file sharing technologies such as eDonkey, Kazza, bit Torrent, todistribute their files/secrets.It is also a book for anyone who simply wants to have an awareness of what is out there.
2-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining read but not much on information.
Definitely a book for beginners, this book is not much more then an introduction to the "dark underside".It should effectively scare any parents or newbes, but bore anyone who's been on the net for any amount of time.I'm not very experienced on the subject of security but still this book didn't have much to offer me. There are a lot of other books out there that provide this information and take it a step or two farther.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks to the missing .75 cents...
We get an incredibly engaging page-turner of an astronomer/system manager tracking down a foreign hacker. Cliff Stoll genuinely struggles and questions his own actions not knowing whether he is doggedly tracing some hapless student or a nefarious spy. In the end he overcomes his Berkeley counterculture distrust of all those three letter gov't agencies and develops a respect for their work if not their inability to coordinate or communicate interdepartmentally. He becomes a security expert they all seek but laments the lack of openness and the attack on trust that is required in the academic world in order to facilitate networking and the exchange of ideas. A really good story and there is a pretty good recipe for chocolate cookies on page 155.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice reading with good technical coverage
"The Cuckoo's Egg" is a good book on computer hacking and espionage . It covers well all technical aspects involved in the case, stuff like UNIX, Tymnet and the very begining of system cracking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Data Mining, plain and easy
This easy to read book is about the prevention of crime using Advanced Data Mining technologies, tools and techniques. The book explains in plain English the technologies, how they work and how they can be used to prevent crime or terrorism. The audience can be anybody interested in the prevention of crime or terrorism such as security specialist, law enforcement, intelligence agents, fraud investigators and public in general since no intricate math is involved.White House's national strategy for homeland security involves Data Mining.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting applications of data mining
It's the second book of Jesus Mena that I read. The subject of this new one is a little bit opportunistic in the world and US actuality. The book is a sort of general presentation of applications in fraud investigation in terms of models, tools and usages. Of course to build such models the book is not enough detailed to do it but all the elements are given to you to go deeper in the subject. In cas this book is to read absolutly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat weak on details
I was very excited when I bought the book, but was somewhat disappointed. The reason for that is the book is very light on details and tends to talk about things rather then on how things are done and how they work. The book does cover some tools but with no connection to concepts and with few details on how the tools do what they do. It does contain a lot of interesting material and s generally well written.Read more

Editorial Review

This is a first-rate detective story--and all true. It's the story of a seemingly invincible electronic thief, con man, and stalker--and the people who tracked him down. Jonathan Littman brings his readers straight into the world of cyberpunk crime as he shows the origins, development, and climax of the wildest and most audacious known crime spree in cyberspace. 4-0 out of 5 stars An absorbing story...
Jonathan Littman's The Watchman is well written and engaged me enough to read it in one sitting. I wanted for some time to learn more about Kevin Poulsen having heard about some of the exploits attributed to him. This story accomplishes that in a compelling way and manages to be pertinent years later. This is required reading for anyone wishing to know the darker side of the hacker sub-culture, about Kevin Poulsen, Ron Austin or Justin Petersen and some of their creative mischief and crimes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate hacker - a true crime story
If you like true crime stories, this one is for you. I wont try and debate the truth of the book, (it's a controversial subject)because I dont know the truth. But I know this is a good story, even if there are a few fabrications here and there.
5-0 out of 5 stars An inside look at hacker culture
I had no idea who Kevin Poulson was when I picked up this book. All I knew was that I wanted to read a book which dealt with computer hackers and this book had been recommended to me by a friend of mine.Suffice to say I was not disappointed.Read more

Editorial Review

To harden a router is to render it more heavily defended and more difficult to attack. Because routers (by definition) serve as points of entry into your network, it makes sense to devote extra effort to their security. Read more
