5-0 out of 5 stars Details That Developers and Security Experts Need
Phishing quickly exploded from a nuisance to a full-fledged threat in the middle of 2005. Weaknesses in email, combined with flaws in Web security and with a little social engineering mixed in make for an effective tool to get the attention of users and lure unsuspecting people into the trap.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a technical reference: A great read
If you're on your way to a security conference this summer, and you'd like to get up to speed on web site abuses and browser design vulnerabilities, this book makes for excellent airplane-reading fare. I say this because Phishing Exposed manages to succeed on two fronts: it is both an instructive technical reference, as well as a surprisingly compelling narrative.
5-0 out of 5 stars Expands the boundaries of client-side hacking
Phishing Exposed is a powerful analysis of the many severe problems present in Web-based activities.Phishing Exposed is another threat-centric title from Syngress. The book presents research conducted by Secure Science Corporation as a way to understand the adversary. The author demonstrates his own attacks against multiple popular e-commerce sites as a way to show how phishers accomplish their goals.I was surprised by the extent to which the author could repeatedly abuse high-profile financial sites, and for that reason I highly recommend reading Phishing Exposed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hacking exposed: excellent books
This is a general comment regarding Hacking Exposed series. I owned Hacking Exposed (first edition) and then I moved to the more specific Hacking Exposed books, so now I've got Hacking Linux Exposed, Hacking Windows 2000 Exposed and hacking web Applications exposed. All those books absolutely worth it, do not hesitate to buy any of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intellectually Challenging and Practical
I-Way Robbery is an innovative and authoritative guide forprofessionals charged with defending businesses' and governmentagencies' information assests against persons who use the I-Way for criminal, unethical and immoral purposes.Casual and small business users will also be enlightned about some of the dangers they face and what they may do to manage their risks. The authors have carefully identified the most significant problems and issues confronting I-Way users and have provided detailed approaches for their solutions. Emphasis is on "anticipate and prevent" and if something happens the readers of this book will be prepared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read book for security and law enforcment professionals
The "Information System Security Officer's Guide" was a gem which offered the readers sound basic fundamentals on establishing and managing an information protection program. The follow-up "I-WayRobbery" is an equally excellent, easy to read and understandabletreatise on a very complicated, challenging, and sophisticated theme ofInternet crime and security. The authors have provided numerous examplesof illegal intrusion of the of the Internet and have cited recommendedsolutions to prevent and avoid unauthorized and costly attacks by hackers, phreakers, crackers, and even foreign commercial and government agenciestraveling on the I-Way which they analgously compared it to the modernSuperhighways. This book is an excellent companion to the ISSO Guide andshould be included as a reference book for security and law enforcementprofessions. It is also a must read book for executives, managers andsupervisors to understand their responsiblities for effective managementand operation of their connections to the Internet as we head into the newmillennium. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction
My comment goes out to the first (very old now) edition, 1999. This was the first book I've read about linux security and it's very well written, well organized and cover most importat topics about system security and internet security as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Who is this book for?
I'll start off by saying that I am CISSP, CCSP and SANS GSEC certified. I have read a couple of the Maximum Security series books and I'm constantly disappointed. First off the book is about 5 times too long for a novice that is curious about the subject and under informative for a professional. It also seems to cover some "neeto" programs you can use to secure your system. For the amount of pages I thought it would at least delve into some kernel hacking, buffer overflow/underrun protection. The author seems to love to give scare tactic examples of attacks that happened years before the book was published. If someone is reading this book they most likely understand the threat. I don't need to the police to tell me about murders that have gone on in Baltimore to convince me to put locks on my doors. This kind of off subject garbage makes this book even heavier, and not from an information stand point. Published in 2001 it seem that is was out of date then as well. It covers, for the lack of better description, low level hacker tools in a majority of descriptions of tools. For example the "Sniffer" chapter mentions nothing about dsniff a very popular and powerful sniffing utility. I would not recommend this book to a beginner as there is way too much garbage taking you through the installation of basic pieces of software. Never mentioning some different options maybe you should be selecting during the install. There is no need to cut and paste the contents of the INSTALL file from Tripwire, most of the guides for installing are word for word from the programs own install and readme files. I would not recommend this to a professional as well as it does not go into great enough detail about anything unless you don't want to read man files and would rather have it in the form of a 13lbs book. My guess is this book was thrown together poorly with haste and by someone that has little to no experience in network security let alone security on ONE system. To sum this review up, there is nothing in this book that isn't already on google.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ANY LINUX USER!!
This is probably not just the best linux book I have ever purchased but one of the best computer books I've purchased period. The book explains things clear and to the point with real examples and many sites you can check out for further information.I've learned a great detail about network security and linux in journal.Thank you Anonymous. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Examines Security Exploitation
If you are an IT professional that needs to learn more about security exploitation and how people can get in and abuse your system, this is a great book for this purpose.Very technical book, not for beginners!!
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, but disappointing. . .
Would like just to tell how good this book is (and it is indeed), but I am very disappointed by the fact that no CD is actually included and the companion Web site doesn't seem to exist either. !!

2-0 out of 5 stars Far from being a good book
I can recognize Dan Verton really did a lot of researching for writing this book but, despite all of it, it's a bad book. Excepting HD Moore I never saw any of those hackers interviewed. The tales are very unintersting. A mom from a friend of mine liked it and probably my mother will.

3-0 out of 5 stars More fiction that reality.
This is one of the only books that directly talks about teenage hackers and one that tries to change the people's and the media's perception about a hacker. It does not, however, do a great job of conveying this message at least that is what I thought. The preface starts as a restatement of the well know Hacker's Manefesto authored by Mentor a decade ago. The book will not appeal to the technical audience, since it is mostly a novel. One issue that I really found serious in the book was that the message is contradicted. Although the book wants to convey the message that hacking is bad and people who practice it are normal teenagers who might be cutting your grass; the choice of characters was no where normal. The characters which are mostly from divorced parents, living with no water in their house, picking fights, getting arrested, and getting expelled from school; hardly the norm for the average teenager IMHO. A couple of technical inaccuracies were also spotted between the text and there a huge gap in the time line described between the day the hacker fiddled with his first computer and the day he started to break computers. Other than that issue the book is a good read although it does really appeal to my technological taste.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hackers

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Data off of a Web Site into Your System
Often times there's information somewhere on the web that you want to use in your own computing. Perhaps you want to look at news stories and display the headlines of what's happening today with a link to the site of the story. In the early days of the web, when you wanted to do something like that you had to do it manually or do some kind of hard coding to parse the information you wanted out of the HTML. Tedious, and if they ever change their web page you're re-doing your code.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great for applying ideas and exploring possibilities...
Rather than just read RSS feeds, would you like to *do stuff* with RSS and Atom?I received a copy of a really good book that goes beyond the nuts and bolts of RSS formatting...Hacking RSS and Atom by Leslie M. Orchard.
5-0 out of 5 stars don't worry about the different versions of RSS and Atom
The book is very logically arranged into 3 parts. For using feeds, making feeds and mixing feeds. Most readers will probably deal with the first part and maybe the third part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too much fun stuff for one book
I stumbled across Make: in a retail store and bought a copy.Nearly fifteen bucks for a "magazine" is pretty spendy for me, but minimal advertising and lots of interesting articles and reviews hooked me.I've since subscribed, but when I found out Amazon had back issues at discounted prices, I had to pick up the issues I had missed. In addition to gaining the confidence to try to repair some things I previously considered "disposable", I learned about a drain-cleaning tool that more than paid for all of the issues I've purchased in the money it saved me on a call to a drain-cleaning service.
5-0 out of 5 stars Exc eeds expectation
Ok, I was expecting good things from this magazine, but what I got exceeded my expectations. The first thing that I noticed was the production quality of the publication. The pages are thick and satin like and the art is consistent and first rate. Most importantly, the content is exceptional.Typically with these sorts of books, there are many interesting tidbits, but no practical applications.Make: differs in that every time I turn the page there is something wonderful that begs to be created.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ads? What ads?
Not sure what magazine Brandnew was reading when he complained "70% of contents are sponsored, and ads appear everywhere", but it wasn't this one. Make has VERY few ads. I just quickly thumbed through this issue (Vol. 1), and was only able to find eleven pages that have ads on them, including inside the covers and the backcover. It's possible that I missed one or two others, but there's no way you'd ever say they were "everywhere". The ads that do appear are all relavent to the target audience. Like most magazines, they do have product reviews, but they're contained in about 10 pages, and again are all relevant to the reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid book for infosec consultants
This book has the look and feel of a business school textbook, moving from topic to topic in a fairly academic matter. It is a combination of 14 essays from prominent authors in the topics they are writing on.This allows for a book that can treat a wide range of concepts and still maintain credibility and a tone of expertise with the downside being the structure of each essay is slightly different between authors. As such, it is meant more as a higher-level introduction to concepts and ideas that swirl around the information security industry but it is couched in the language of business in the hopes that enterprises will adopt a measure of culture change in the area of security. The book seems to have a more European focus, but it is not without value to an American audience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dont Bother
I just thought this book is not really that good. Most were not even hacks, but just basic usage. The only hacks book I really liked was by Rob - Linux Server Hacks.I would really recommend that one, even if you use bsd as it has true hacks with tar/ssh/etc.Try the Absolute OpenBSD book too. That is quite good and has a lot of info.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best BSD book on the shelves, PERIOD.
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced user, you will find this book extremely practical.Dru's solutions make building a BSD server from start to finish a snap.Buy this book as a supplement at the very least.5 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Adds the auditing dimension to web testing
This book is unique in that it focuses more on auditing than on actual web testing techniques, which is an area that is too often overlooked by QA.Because of this niche area, this book can be used in conjunction with any of the more testing-centric books, giving QA a solid security-in-depth approach. This approach also makes this book a solid reference for complying with parts of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read & Reference for Testers and Test Managers
Before I read Steve's book, I thought that testing the security of a Web site required huge amounts of technical knowledge including how certain operating systems, web servers, etc., actually worked.Having read the book, I realise that someone needs to know - but it needn't be me.As a tester, my job is to see if the security measures that have been put into place actually do what they are supposed to and in this context the book exceeds my requirements and expectations.4-0 out of 5 stars A Great General Overview of Testing Web Security
The author's goal is to make managers responsible for Web site security aware that having a super-duper firewall doesn't excuse the organization from conducting tests or exploring additional avenues to supplement the firewall.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, Bad, Ugly
I found the first two sections of this book very useful. ie, I have come to LOVE Mac OS's zoom feature, which I use all the time now to make small video boxes 'fill' my 17" screen. There are other fun trick and tips in those first two sections.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great for Code Writers ONLY
I had to return this book, only because of my unfamiliarity with UNIX.Long gone are the days when I used to knock out code.I've been spoiled (ruined some might say) by years of GUI and the heavy use of utility programs.
5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect blend of tips and technique
I love clever tips, and Scott Knaster delivers a ton of them here, many seen nowhere else. But this tome goes way beyond tips, diving into the gnarly details of Tiger that others have glossed over, such as application internals, Widget construction, and Unix command language. So many Mac books are just a rehash of the surface of the user interface. Scott's book is way ahead of the pack. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but some weaknesses
This is a good choice to learn about home theater, and the author has a number of great ideas to get you started.I recommend the book, but I was disappointed with several aspects.1) It seemed to be aimed more to the high-end user; no information about home-theater-in-a-box or virtual surround sound was given.I can imagine the author's opinions on these subjects, but he should have at least addressed them. 2) Some information is rapidly becoming outdated, especially in the video processing and connectivity sections. This book should probably be updated once a year.3)Too much unnecessary detail in some areas. For example, a large section on antenna construction should be shortened, since most people probably use either cable or satellite anyway. And while the long section on user service codes is good, most of it will be out of date by the time the book is published.4)Too much emphasis on projection displays, and not enough detail on flat panels (e.g., mounting issues, care/maintenance issues).5)I would like to see more information about wiring strategies: different ways to hide wiring, the status of wireless speakers, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Home Theater Basics explained.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hacker's Guide to Visual FoxPro 6.0
I am new to Visual Foxpro after many years of using Foxpro for DOS 2.0 and I thought that this book would help me learn Visual Foxpro.
2-0 out of 5 stars NOT a good book to learn FoxPro!
Rip the first few chapters out of this book and it is a pretty good reference book. However, before figuring out that this is ONLY a reference book the reader must suffer through 150 pages of ridiculous "dummies" book snippets.I tend to read my new technical books front to back the first time. But I came very close to dropping this book in the trash before I realized there was worthwhile material behind the first three chapters of dribble. If you're trying to learn FoxPro, buy something else!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome VFP 6.0 Reference
Every Visual FoxPro programmer should has this book at their desk. I read an earlier review which gave it a 1 star. Well give them a break. This book has excellent content!! The sayings and quotes are to keep you alert ( or if you read the whole book, awake). This is THE BEST Visual FoxPro book on THE PLANET!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful if a minorly flawed
Although I dont agree that it is anything more than a minor quibble, I do agree with the other reviewer who said that the book could've used a bit more grammatical editing.
