The mightiest fortresses in the world can fail, and when that happens all you can do (you being the person responsible for castle security) is figure out what went wrong, what damage was done, and by whom. If the castle was located in the right kind of kingdom--to take a metaphor too far--you can hope to prosecute the perpetrator. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New/updated info is spot on!
This edition of the book addresses the most current concerns/issues that every computer professional/layman should be aware of.The sheer amount of information offerd is impressive but, as always, presented in the same easy-to-absorb manner as John's numerous other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for CEH
The book is clearly thought as a companion to prepare for CEH cert. test.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dated material
very good book, but the material covered is dated for the price. Not one mention of windows 2003 OR XP.The material covered is at least 3 years old.i was told this was THE book to read, but after reading through, a little dissappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general introduction to Internet security for non-techs
The subtitle of this book is misleading, as much of the advice is geared to consumers rather than business owners.5-0 out of 5 stars Follow this advice to protect your business.

4-0 out of 5 stars what about all the failed pranks?
Here is an informal romp through decades of MIT pranks. Reflecting well on the ingenuity and craziness of the undergrads who devoted so much time and sweat to making these happen. Most of the pranks revolve around some high tech gimmick. As you follow the narrative, you might admire the unorthodox nature to which technology has been applied.
5-0 out of 5 stars ^_^
Ok, originally I was trying to buy a book on Asian women in the work force for my Anthropology class. The frist part of the name of this book is the same as the other book so I quickly bought it before I finished reading the rest of the title, so it is all my fault for getting the wrong book. Either way, this book is alot better and more enertaining. Best mistake I ever made ^_^. The book was mailed to my house fast and in great condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but with a caveat.
This is a terrific, fairly comprehensive book of the highlights from MIT's long tradition of pranks. However, if you have already read Journal of the Institute of Hacks, Tomfoolery, and Pranks, you'll find you've read most of this before, and in better detail, with better-reproduced photographs (in my opinion.) The good thing about Nightwork is that this is includes hacks from more recent years than the other book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but hard to keep up to date!
The book is great for telling you what it has to tell you. Unfortunately, so many new exploits are found each day, it is hard for the book to keep up to date. I am already a couple of revisions behind. Still, it is a worthwhile read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginning hackers
If you want to go over to the 'dark side', this book describes enough hacking technique to turn you into a 'script kiddie' (or enough to defend against them). Of course, it's the things that the book *doesn't* go into detail about that makes you want to learn more in-depth detail about network security (things like buffer overruns and process hijacking). A good starting point for budding hackers, people who administer networks, or anyone who is technically-minded. It also teaches enough about Back Orifice and NetBus to have fun messing with your co-workers on those occasional boring days in the cubicle!

4-0 out of 5 stars Exposed your network
This is the first technical book about security in network/systems. I found that some books only show how to "close" a hole in a network without informing what it is closing from. This is a good book for busy administrators that does not have enough time to update himself, since this book is a compilation of security threats/tools/defences ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of XML
As a Perl programmer, my first instinct when given some XML to process is to grab the appropriate Perl module (probably XML::XPath or XML::LibXML) and use that to do whatever I need to. Although that usually gets the job done, reading this book opened my eyes to a number of other XML processing tools that will sometimes be more useful than a Perl program. Actually Perl doesn't get mentioned at all in the index, whereas Java gets half a column of entries.
5-0 out of 5 stars Useful tips for every XML task you're likely to want to do
This is my favorite O'Reilly book. The scope covers everything you can imagine for working with XML.I really like the depth of information in every hack ('hack' in the sense of ways to get something done).Whenever a tool is mentioned, there is often additional info about related tools that do similar functionality and why you would choose one or the other. Each hack is like a well-crafted short story.
5-0 out of 5 stars helpful supplement
I'm familiar with XML and have found this book to be helpful. Not a book to learn XML, it is a place to pick up new information that can help to complete a toolbox already in the making. There were some hints to bridge gaps between what I want to do and what I know how to do. I plan to have it nearby to make my work easier and faster. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth The Effort
I am a relative newcomer to the security field. I have been adding books to my library to help me in my job.I picked up Defending your Digital Assets and was pleasantly surprised. The sections on Security Verificationof Systems and Networks and Cryptography were a rare read, and veryenjoyable.1-0 out of 5 stars Too long, too general
This book does not live up to its title and subtitle.Very general material. For example, Denial of Service Attacks are in the news these days.Looking through the index, I find four references to DOS attacks. The first on page 45 tells me that DOS attacks can be costly. The secondon page 85 describes some previous DOS attacks, including one that tookplace 12 years ago.The next reference is on page 304 and is a historicaldescription of DOS attacks over the past three years. The last referenceon page 452 tells me that I should conduct DOS testing for my web server. Most of the book's content is similar. If this is useful to you, pleasebuy this book. For specific help in hardening your network, please lookelsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide to Computer Security

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not a product, it's a process!
Bruce Schneier offers an excellent 'big picture' overview of the computer security field. From types of attacks, to algorithm security to security in the context of your data center, you get a full overview of the current practices and consequences arising from them. The author argues for security as a process, not a product; security is not something you can add to your product after the fact. Starting from the product specification, down to your last outsourced programmer, security has to permeate your organization for it to work. Building 'attack trees', relying on peer review and enforcing liability are all suggestions advanced by Bruce Schneier.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better books available on security
Secrets and Lies is one of the better books on computer security available today... from Bruce Schneier, the guy who literally wrote the book on cryptography: Applied Cryptography.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Computer Security
This is a great book that goes beyond the math associated with many security books. The author gives us the "big picture" of security, making it entertaining, informative, and highly readable. He also balances security and privacy, pointing out the delicate balancing act between the two (and the difficulty of achieving both).Bruce knows the theory and math inside out (he leaves most of it out of this book). He writes very well, and gives plenty of real-world examples and analogies.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique, thorough, and informative -- a must-read
'Internet Denial of Service' (IDOS) is an excellent book by expert authors.IDOS combines sound advice with a fairly complete examination of the denial of service (DoS) problem set.Although the authors write from the DoS point of view, as a network security monitoring advocate I found myself agreeing with many of their insights.Since there are no other books dedicated to DoS, I was very pleased to find this one is a powerful resource for managers and technicians alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Scary but Fun
When I see a picture in a camera book illustrating how I can open a digital camera and get at the insides to make modifications, I get scared. The thought of taking the guts out of my camera is like the thought of major surgery to my internal organs. And yet as I read through the "hacks" proposed by the author, I found just reading about them to be fun, even if I wasn't going to undertake any of these projects (or at least not most.)

Here is another benign use of the word "Hack". Meaning to tinker with, or experiment. The authors indulge fully in this meaning of the word, as applied to digital cameras. The activities described are almost all hardware related. That is, hands on, manual tinkering.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's ok for a newbie.
The great cover art plus the title led me to believe that exciting stories were inside. The most exciting chapter is the one you can read for free on the author's webpage, from there it doesn't get much better.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This probably should be called Puzzles for Crackers, not hackers.
