3-0 out of 5 stars Phreaks and Pr0phessors
This is a cultural and political study of hackers as researched by an academic, and as a former academic myself, I can tell you a bit about how this process works. A professor takes a subject of general interest and beats it senseless by applying intellectual theory, and constructs the study for other professors who are more concerned with accepted research methods, rather than knowledgeable general readers who might have an interest in learning more about the subject. Here, Douglas Thomas uncovers a number of fascinating aspects of hacker culture. These include the recent increase in political activism by hackers, their contradictory stances on secrecy and freedom of information, the back-and-forth influence of cyberpunk and science fiction (with some interesting connections to authors William Gibson and Bruce Sterling), and especially how popular views on the criminality of hackers is really an outgrowth of society's latent fears of technological domination.
5-0 out of 5 stars balanced, thought-provoking, and clear (really!)
While people in previous reviews have complained that a) the prose is dense, and b) it's out of date, I can say as an academic who has waded through most of the academic literature on hackers and hacker culture that Thomas's prose, although indeed academic, is in contrast cystal clear. As well, his take on hackers is, in my opinion, more thorough and balanced than almost any other account I've seen. 4-0 out of 5 stars Hacker History, for the Unenlightened
As others have mentioned in their reviews, this book was written by a highly academic author. Thus, the content is geared towards a college educated audience, or at least bright highschool students. As a computer engineering student, I found this book to be intruiging.Several hacking related movies were analyzed, and although slightly dated, these examples further the understanding of hacking history. The anecdotes are often amusing, and the main points of each section are deeply supported with sources and logical reasoning.Thomas's overlying message is that the media cruelly slants the image of the benevolent hacker into one of a violent evil genius.I'd recommend this book to anyone above average computer user level, or those who have an interest in learning about computer history, and hackers in general. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars No online content
I bought this book at full price and was disgusted to find out the website they direct you to has no content! At the bookstore, I was excited by all of the examples and code I could download from hackingmt.com. I accessed the website at home and there was nothing on it. There is some value to the book, but much of the advanced material is all on the missing website. Terrible!

1-0 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?
To be honest, I'm VERY disgusted with this book - I just purchased it this afternoon, started to read it and went to the web site that was supposed to contain plugins and other materials from the book, only to find that it is essentially an EMPTY site! The site is located at:
2-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, but completely missing content
A great idea for a book but it falls flat in execution. The book promises several plugins and support files are available on its website but no such site exists. The book was published in July and still nothing. You cannot use Chapters 16 or 19 whatsoever, which were the exact reasons for my purchase. The site claims the hurricane is to blame. While I do have sympathies, wasn't that after July? Wouldn't you have your support site ready to go at publishing time? I have so far gotten no response from emailed queries about the missing content. I do not recommend this book due to this situation, which is a shame as it held so much promise. If you don't mind missing that portion, then perhaps you'll like this resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem for novice and advanced user
Oh I just love this book. I buy a lot of technical books and find about 1 out of 5 are books I use alot. This is one of them. pretty up to data and covers gnome and KDE though most of the Hacks are not window manager specific -- Hell some of the funnest stuff is done from the command line. Full of great stuff for getting you system running the way you want.
5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book if you use Linux or are moving to Linux
First, I write software professionally. I write software, I am not a Sys Admin (which is hard work I might add; System Administration is for hardcore people.) This book saved me money by giving me answers to problems that would have taken me days to find the answers to by searching the internet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook of Magnitude that Tries to Deliver
This book is far superior than many other books on similar topics, and the authors walk the line well between being academic and practical. The thrust of the book is toward an understanding of what criminologists call "emerging crime," and it delivers a well researched baseline of information synthesized with what is known or speculated about emerging trends. The end result is a product suitable for adoption in the academic marketplace, and would even make for fascinating reading by laypersons. Overall, the book is congruent with the scholarly and curricular purposes of higher education, and one shares the sense of urgency that comes across at times, but one also relishes the moments, evident in the writing, when careful and meticulous reflection is done.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Thoughts, But Not So Much
Mark Burnett's book appears to be the work of someone who has been in the security business for 10 years, been to a few lectures, seen lots of password policies, maybe even taken a class or two; but didn't understand some basic concepts. Bad guys may be baffled by the passwords someone creates by this book, but only if they're stupid. Most people aren't, and anyone who has spent any time understanding the math or the way people pick passwords won't be fooled too much by Mr. Burnett's suggestions. This book does have some merit in that it does educate the reader in basic security, but don't bother spending more than $5 for this book. You can get pretty much the same answers by googling around for an hour or so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, quick read
Mark has made a great, quick, must-read book on passwords. I had read a few chapters of it before it was published (my quote is on the back cover), and liked it, but the overall book should be read by all system administrators. It contains commonsense, practical advice, just more of it than most of us have thought about alone-all in one place.
4-0 out of 5 stars Passwords are surprisingly interesting
I never thought I would find a whole book about passwords to be interesting, but I really like Mark Burnett's Perfect Passwords. This short book (134 pages without the appendices, which can be ignored) is remarkably informative.I recommend anyone developing password policies or security awareness training reading Perfect Passwords.

1-0 out of 5 stars USELESS
Had this book been published 5 years ago, then it would have been considered OK (just ok). Today, this is only an anachronic, elementary and overall useless book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for aspiring and skilled developer's
The collaboration of freelance computer consultant Richard Conway and security and distributed applications consultant Julian Cordingley, Code Hacking: A Developer's Guide To Network Security is a guidebook that teaches developers basic hacking techniques and hacker methodologies and thought processes, so that developers can write code that more effectively resists hacking as well as how to write network security test harnesses for application and infrastructure. Scanners, sniffers, and common exploits are also covered in this in-depth guide that uses the languages of C#, C++, and Java to present and explain its lessons. An accompanying CD-ROM contains a custom security scanner written in C#. Highly recommended for aspiring and skilled developer's in today's modern age of cybercrime.

4-0 out of 5 stars I think even my mother would like this book!
The first part of the book deals entirely with the authors plight of growing up in a very rough area of town and the struggles that he faces with on a day to day basis.Apart from the first 4 or 5 pages, which contained a fast moving account of what happens when a rogue Chief Technology Officer gets sacked, for the first 71 pages I was wondering whether a differnet book had been slipped inside the jacket of hacker cracker as there was no mention of computers at all. The story was still pretty interesting though.Eventually he gets round to his first experience with computers and his encounters with hacking and the addictiveness of it all.Eventually the story ends up with a moving account of being at the site of the twin towers on 9/11 and a very touching part about a strange whistling noise (which I won't explain as it is a bit of a spoiler). An easy read and not really the usual hacker biography type book. I think this is partly due to the fact that the author is assuming his readers are not technical as some of the explanations (IRC for example) are very basic and some are almost "media stereotypical assumptions" of what really goes on.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to extend, but it can be dangerous
Of the popular browsers, Firefox has certainly joined those ranks recently and rapidly. But its appeal is not just to the user. Reyes explains how it was made from the ground up to be easily extensible by programmers. He illustrates this at length, with over 150 hacks developed by its fans. These are grouped into sections like performance, menus and navigation.

Bruce Sterling's classic work highlights the 1990 assault on hackers, when law-enforcement officials successfully arrested scores of suspected illicit hackers and other computer-based law-breakers. These raids became symbolic of the debate between fighting serious computer crime and protecting civil liberties. However, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading on computers, freedom and privacy.
Bruce Sterling of Cyberpunk fame takes a journalistic approach to researching law and disorder on the electronic frontier by examining two specific events in depth : the 1990 Operation Sundevil, a concerted nationwide effortby district attorneys, the Secret Service, the FBI, local authorities and various Telco security to bust and publicize a hacker crackdown; and the resulting trials and creation of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and rise of the civil libertarians.

1-0 out of 5 stars ** Caution:for non-super technical people BEWARE**
First:the majority of the content is not compatible with the current TIVO system, series 2 *** I got SKUNKED!
2-0 out of 5 stars Very Limited Usefulness
This really is not a book on Hacking Tivo, rather a book on "Hacking First Generation Tivo's."I have a series 2 DVR and expected to see some hacks that would prove worthwhile for my DVR, however there is little for owners of Tivos manufactured in the last two years.Very simple recommendation-if you have a first generation Tivo buy the book, otherwise pass.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as comprensive as others for Series 2
I bought this book and "Hacking the Tivo, Second Edition".The two books cover a similar range of hacks and include Linux boot CDs.However there are key Series 2 hacks that are not covered in this book. For example, video extraction is a very valued hack.I want to transfer videos between my Series 2 Tivo and my PC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
I bought this to help perform research on a security course that I'm preparing.Even though the information on some of the honeypot programs is a bit outdated, I still found the book very helpful. It's well-written, and gives a very good explanation of how to implement honeypots. It was a tremendous help in my research.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will start using honeypots if u read this book
This book is written with obvious passion towards honeypots as the author obviously believes in the power of honeypots in making the corporate network a safe place. The discussion cover simple and advanced topics in honeypot motives, creation and trapping hacker information. In all, a well researched book that evangelises the use of honeypot intrusion detection

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Honeypots for the Beginner
This book did a great job of presenting the concepts of modern honeypot technology. It begins by covering the basic concepts of what the different types of honeypots can do, the different design concepts of production honeypots vs. research honeypots and how honeypots can be an aid to network security in any organization. The one thing I did'nt like was the "flow" of the book and the way some chapters were written. There was an exessive amount of fluff, some topics were beat like a dead horse. The book could easily have shaved off 50 pages making it a better read. Overall, it was a great book, I learned a lot, and would recomend it to anyone looking for an intro to honeypots. The included CD was a plus as well. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The true story of how Kevin Mitnick was snagged by computer security expert Tsutomu Shimomura. As gripping as a great mystery novel -- but true -- and as important as any book on computer security -- but eminently readable by anyone. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Tsutomu Shimomura is a Moron who Just Wanted Attention
Shimomura teamed up to write the most trivial, and boring details in this book about himself, and when he wasn't doing that, he was making up things about Kevin Mitnick. He never met Kevin Mitnick, he never knew Kevin Mitnick, he never had anything to do with Kevin Mitnick other than helping track him down because he was starved for attention and wanted to look like some super computer hero. Almost nothing in this book actually happened, I say almost because the only stuff that did actually happen were the trivial mundane details about Shumomura himself. Don't waste your time reading this sensationalist, tabloidian, garbage.

3-0 out of 5 stars tedious, self-indulgent subplots,
Tedious, self-indulgent subplots. I dont care about Julia. No one cares about Julia. No one cares about where you eat or where you rent a car. These subplots REALLY screw-up the read. But the computer stuff is interesting enough. But somebody, please, toss Julia overboard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, everybody here seems to be starstruck
I have The Fugitive and Takedown (this book) sitting in my room now.I borrowed both of them simultaneously.I had only heard of Mitnick before in anecdotes, and I thought it would be interesting to get both viewpoints.
